15 lawhawk  Fri, Sep 21, 2007 11:58:05am

He can explain all he wants - the problem is that he can't explain why his memos are bogus - in form, content, and design. He ignores those problems, to instead focus on the narrative that makes no sense - that CBS was trying to curry favor with the Administration.

Where's his evidence of such a claim? That he still had a job at CBS despite pushing a bogus story on the American public and lied about how he claimed to have authenticated the story?

Courage Dan. Especially when you get deposed and are forced to tell exactly how you authenticated the documents under oath. Especially when CBS shows that the documents are indeed bogus and that you and Mapes lied and caused serious harm to the CBS News brand.

Again, Rather is lucky he still had a job. If I did my job so poorly and lied about critical details crucial to my job description, I'd have been tossed on my keyster, not given alternative assignments and allowed to cash paychecks.

26 MrAndMrsSmith  Fri, Sep 21, 2007 12:03:21pm

I do wish Document Dan would finally get it through that thick, pea-brain skull of his that no one cares about him anymore. Like OJ, his day has come and gone, and America hates it when they're lied to. Good ol' Dan has been spinning and lying for years, and he was finally caught by the ombudsmen in the 'Sphere. As Allah noted this morning,

"If he wants to see independent journalism at work, wait until one of CBS’s corporate drone lawyers gets him on the stand and hands him Charles Johnson’s memo overlay as Exhibit 1. What a goof it’ll be to see points first made and supported by bloggers being used by CBS against Dan Rather."

Document Dan won't know what hits him when he walks into that courtroom. All we can say is "courage," Dan, and don't cry so loud the judge slaps you with contempt of court.

27 aunursa  Fri, Sep 21, 2007 12:03:48pm

How does Rather respond to the claim that the documents were intentionally planted in a diabolical Machiavellian plot by The Evil Karl Rove?

Tell Tales Dan:

And now have I not told you that what you mistake for madness is but over-acuteness of the senses? now, I say, there came to my ears a low, dull, quick sound, such as a watch makes when enveloped in cotton. I knew that sound well too. It was the beating of the throbing memo. It increased my fury as the beating of a drum stimulates the soldier into courage.

That’s right...courage.

Usually when people write "ran as" it means the person didn't get elected. Please tell me that's the case. One way or another, to run for future office means he or she has to convince the voters that insanity doesn't run in the family.

Zounds! Gadzooks! He's nuttier than three loons. It will be fun to watch him reduced to a twitching mass when multiple forensic document experts testify that there is simply no way those documents were produced when they purport.

At some point these yo-yos will have to accept reality -- the documents are obvious and crude forgeries. A small child can see why that is so. And Dan will finally, finally have to slink off into the twilight with whatever was left of his reputation in shreds. His final impression on that audience he has valued so much over the years will be that of a sad, confused old man trying gain back a shred of dignity, while in fact he is ruining whatever was left of it. It is almost Shakespearean. Screw you Dan, dishonest liar that you are. You're asking for it and now I think you are going to get it.

CBS showed him a lot of respect and the whitewashed Thornburgh report gave Rather and the network a teensy fig leaf to preserve some self-respect. Now a real "Texas style" asskicking will commence and there will be tears.

I can't look at your nic without thinking of that XXX flick Penthouse made some years back.

Great nic! Wished I'd thought of it.

+1

I can't think of that flick without thinking Naked Helen Mirren.

I saw her naked in some movie about the IRA. Lemme look it up.

Here it is, Cal, from 1984. It was quite awhile ago, so she was only like 39 then. She's very good in the Prime Suspect series.

When Nixon was running for President, he used a catchphrase: "A driving dream". Dan Rather, on a newscast, said if he hears 'a driving dream' one more time, he'll jump off the Tallahatchie Bridge - an overplayed song of the time. Dan Rather is a slug.

i watch sometimes in the hope that alison stewart is hosting.

countdown started as a cheap daily show rip off. but it's gone completely off the rails over the past year. my favorite moments are when olberman looks directly into the camera and talks to bush. and then pauses, as if waiting for the president to respond.

Jonah Goldberg at JWR has a great article about Danny Boy. My favorite quote -

Frankly, we need this. And by "we," I mean a grand coalition of people who delight in watching one of the 20th century's most pompous gasbags fall from the top of the laughingstock tree and hit every branch on the way down.

Take, for example, Don Hewitt, the legendary producer of “60 Minutes.” “Any news organization, print or broadcast, has the right to protect its reputation by divesting itself of a reporter, irrespective of who he or she is, who it feels reported as fact something that reflected his or her biases more than the facts bear,” he said in a NEWSWEEK interview. “And if the reporter’s defense is that he or she had been ‘had,’ isn’t he or she someone a news organization worth its salt can no longer trust not to be ‘had’ again.”

Hewitt says he had questioned whether the reporting was biased at a CBS meeting convened to discuss the controversy that began to swell after the story aired. “Let me ask one question,” he recalls addressing the gathering. “If this had been John Kerry, wouldn’t you have been more careful about the story?” A senior CBS News insider said Rather is further damaging his reputation by suing. “I think it looks pathetic,” this executive told NEWSWEEK on condition of not being identified. "It looks like the musing of an older man who can’t let go. This will have no winners. But the biggest loser will be Dan.”

Journalism does not equal Logic. Journalism Equals L3ogic.

And in other news ...

Dan better be careful. The lawsuit may end up proving legally what everyone with an IQ between 60 and 167 already knows—The documents are fake. You were duped. Ms. Mapes is a windbag.

No, but they have that odor about them .

This just boggles my mind.

If it were me and my money, I'd go find a nice place in somewhere like the Colorado high country and buy myself a view.

Then I'd set out to learn to ski or prospect for gold or climb mountains or run white water or whatever I could until they had to carry me down.

If they could find my body.

here's a little advice for those folks...

advice

117 Winslow Leach, the composer  Fri, Sep 21, 2007 3:23:50pm

Danny Boy

Oh Danny boy, the loony bin is calling;
You’ve dug your grave, yet still you dig some more.
Your mind is gone, and all the folks are laughing;
To Bedlam you must go forevermore.
But still you claim the memos are legitimate,
And now your fame, to infamy has changed.
Or did you say they’re counterfeit but accurate?
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, you are deranged.

And when you claim, though all the folks are laughing,
That you were wrongly scuttled from your throne,
You just compound the level of your gaffing,
And strike us harder in the funny bone.
And when in court, you testify so righteously
That CBS did treat you so unfair,
The throbbing proof will ruin you, litigiously,
And so, of flying countersuits you’d best beware.

Oh Danny boy, Ms. Mapes, Ms. Mapes is calling;
The two of you, a lovely couple make,
For Mary girl is equally delusional,
And such dementia’s very hard to fake.
And so your waltz of lunacy goes whirling on;
Your dissolution plain for all to see.
Or could it be you really know what’s going on,
And simply lack all vestige of integrity?

Oh Danny boy, your courage is incredible;
You have the nerve to play the victim card.
And even though fake memos are indelible,
You still maintain this comical canard.
And though you failed to inculpate the President,
And you engaged in journalistic fraud,
You want a multi-million-dollar settlement;
Oh Danny boy, such courage leaves us overawed.

Oh Danny boy, your “courage” leaves us overawed.

Ooooohh! I'm so glad you posted all the words to that "song." I've used parts of it in some of my posts, but never could remember all the words.

Thanx!

All together now, Lizards...

They're coming to take me away, ha-haaa!
They're coming to take me away, ho-ho, hee-hee, ha-haaa
To the funny farm. Where life is beautiful all the time...

Dan, stop digging.

Yes, when you hit bottom, it is best to stop digging.

This man has turned into a Rather pathetic creature and yet he continues to perfect it.

Next up for Dan Rather -- being photographed by paparazzi, getting out of his limo, wearing a kilt and no underwear. He's sunk that low.
