Religion of Peace Strikes In Maldives?
Two British tourists were injured when a bomb exploded outside the main mosque in the capital of the Maldives.
Two Britons are believed to have been injured in a bomb blast in the Maldives that has wounded at least 12 tourists, the Foreign Office said today.
The blast happened outside the main mosque in Male, the capital of the republic of islands in the Indian Ocean. An FCO spokeswoman said: “We believe that two British nationals were injured and we are seeking to confirm this with the authorities in the Maldives.”
The device exploded near a park and left the two Britons with burn injuries, according to a Maldives government spokesman. “The Maldives has never had something like this before. We are taking this very seriously because tourism is our life blood,” he said.
Local media reported the bomb was made from a washing machine motor attached to a gas cylinder.
The population of the state is Islamic, but the threat of terrorism is classed as “low” in the Foreign Office advice to tourists.
