Hey, al Qaeda in Iraq is beginning to tick off even some hardened jihadis.
I guess blowing up kids and women hasn't impressed the mujahideen of Iraq. CT Blog linked me MSNBC.

"In a development experts call a significant shift, Iraqi insurgent groups are speaking out against al-Qaida and its brutally violent tactics. Last week, two groups, Asaeb al-Iraq al-Jihadiya (aka 'the Iraqi Jihad Union') and the 1920 Revolution Brigades (aka 'Hamas in Iraq') issued statements accusing al-Qaida's Iraq wing, al-Qaida in Iraq, of brutally killing their fighters and commanders, as well as women and children. 'They have killed them and mutilated their bodies,' reads an English translation of the Iraq Jihad Union's statement prepared for the NEFA Foundation, a non-profit terrorism research organization... NBC News terrorism analyst Evan Kohlmann first reported the statements on counterterrorismblog.org. Kohlmann believes such strong public criticism of al-Qaida in Iraq by other insurgent groups in Iraq is a very significant development. With these two new statements last week, Kohlmann says, 'every single major insurgent group — with the exception of the Ansar al-Sunna Army — has now issued a statement condemning al-Qaida. These are hard-core jihadi groups saying this. These are former al-Qaida allies saying this'... Kohlmann, who closely monitors jihadi Web sites, says the statements are causing an online ruckus in jihadi chat forums, with heated exchanges dividing nationalist Islamists who are increasingly critical of al-Qaida and al-Qaida believers who defend it. 'The reaction has been incredible,' Kohlmann says. 'There's a huge outpouring of resentment.' He says there are many angry postings against the groups who have criticized al-Qaida. He says one of the groups just put out a second statement in response, arguing that al-Qaida's online defenders 'don't know what's going on' in Iraq."

I have heard, read or saw Skunk admit that he improvised his lead to Reelin' in the Years, much like Page who improvised his lead to Stairway to Heaven, and laid the best lead he produced on the final product.

Yeah, I just wish he had a better singer :)

RoP strikes in Swat, Pakistan

Mohmand Taliban behead 6 ‘criminals’

* ‘Sharia court’ in Swat sentences 3 to lashing for kidnapping two women
* People told to contact militants for redress of problems
* Swat DCO says cleric being contacted

By Saleem Athar

PESHAWAR: Pro-Taliban militants publicly beheaded six alleged criminals and lashed three others on Friday, officials and witnesses said.

In the lawless Mohmand tribal district bordering Afghanistan, rebels decapitated six members of a kidnap-for-ransom gang after a blood-soaked feud, local government official Miraj Khan said, reported AFP.

The official said the altercation started when militants on Thursday night raided the house of the gang’s chief in connection with the death of one of their colleagues. The gang leader opened fire, killing four of the militants. However, they later killed him and five of his family members, burned down his house and seized another six of his followers.

This is pretty much direct attack on Tribal authority and government writ in NWFP... it's spreading throughout the frontiers, all of them.

re: #24 Eri

It happened in San Fransicso, if I remember correctly. I didn't watch it closely, but the part I did see showed two men dressed in full drag (whiteface, etc) with flowing robes, headpieces, and elaborate makeup, in a Catholic church. Taking communion, although I can't say for sure if that's exactly what was shown instead of some other representative scene.

Hey Charles,

Are you familiar with the Gipsy Kings? And if not, do you like salsa rumba at all?

There's an extended family within this group, and one of their guitarists is Tonino Baliardo.. one of the best 'finger-pickin' mofo's out there.

Good stuff.. btw.. thanks for these 'completely differents'... I've never heard of this guy.

38 Skinless Frank  Fri, Oct 12, 2007 8:33:15pm

Aaahhh. As an old man, that was about as satisfying as any earthly experience left to me. Not counting "substance," of course.

My second thought was "What would Bach do with this?" It sounded almost baroque. Since JSB was a keyboardist above everything else, this recursive piece could have been made into a wonderful fugue for lute (guitar) and clavichord (Fender Rhodes). Thanks, Scott and thanks, Andy!

Another great player! Sounds a bit like a blend of Leo Kottke and Michael Hedges to these ears. Charles, after listening to a number of the musical diversions you've selected for posting over the last year, I'd bet we share the same eclectic tastes and leanings, though unlike you, I'm not a musician myself.

Thanks for posting these most excellent tracks from so many lesser known artists. Exposing this great music to the unwashed Lizard-heathens surely reinforces LGF's LFG's image as one classy joint.

Forgive me BigRadio, for I have sinned. It's been four and-a-half immensely pleasurable years since I discovered Internet radio...

Derek Trucks

42 So?  Fri, Oct 12, 2007 8:40:45pm

McKee has mastered the art of technique, yet his compositional skills could use quite a bit of honing. I heard no melody, no lyrical flow, just a bunch of interesting licks strung together almost haphazardly. If I were him I'd cut, chop and paste this tune into a new musical creation. I heard so many possibilties...he's got the chops...

Just my take on his playing.

Some time back, I said my vote was for Fred Thompson, not based on his legislature voting history, but rather on personal wavelength.

Until he gets rid of Spencer Abraham, I'm not bothering to register for the election. His reticence to rid his staff of a defender of Islamists is costing him dearly in my eyes.

Found this on the San Francisco story:

San Francisco, Oct 10, 2007 / 03:09 pm (CNA).- The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a group of men mockingly dressed as religious sisters, received Holy Communion from the Archbishop of San Francisco last Sunday.

The “sisters”, dressed in costume and white facial paint, and with names such as “Sister Porn Again” and “Sister Roz Erection,” were given the Eucharist by Archbishop George Niederauer at the Most Holy Redeemer parish in San Francisco.

California Catholic Daily reports that the parish and its pastor, Father Stephen Meriwether, have been sympathetic to the predominately homosexual population of the Castro district in San Francisco where it is located.

Americans for Truth about Homosexuality adds that the parish has participated in the San Francisco Gay Pride Parade and allowed the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to lease a hall for “Revival Bingo”, giving the men in the group the opportunity to dress as sisters and award prizes such as sex toys and porn DVDs.

Heh. You beat me to posting that one. Jake is great.

51 Eri  Fri, Oct 12, 2007 9:20:34pm

Update: Apparently the Archbishop was visiting the parish for the first time and was not aware of the activities of the group. He has issued a statement:

Column by Archbishop George H. Niederauer
Catholic San Francisco -- Oct. 19, 2007

A recent event that greatly concerns me needs some
additional explanation -- and with it an apology.
On Sunday, October 7, 2007, I celebrated Mass at
Most Holy Redeemer Parish here in San Francisco,
during my first visit there. The congregation was
devout and the liturgy was celebrated with reverence.
I noticed no demonstration, no protest, no disruption
of the Eucharist.

At Communion time, toward the end of the line, two
strangely dressed persons came to receive Communion.
As I recall one of them wore a large flowered hat or
garland. I did not recognize either of them as wearing
mock religious garb.

Afterward it was made clear to me that these two
people were members of the organization "Sisters of
Perpetual Indulgence," who have long made a practice
of mocking the Catholic Church in general and
religious women in particular. My predecessors,
Cardinal William Levada and Archbishop John Quinn,
have both denounced this group's abuse of sacred
things many times in the past. Only last year, I
instructed the Administrator of Most Holy Redeemer
Parish to cancel the group's use of the hall on the
parish grounds, once I became aware of it.

...

Therefore I conclude that the presence of the
Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence at the Mass on October
7th was intended as a provocative gesture. In that
moment I failed to recognize it as such, and for that,
as I have said, I must apologize.

Still, from the pictures I've seen, I find it hard to believe he did not notice this mockery until afterwards.

This man is at one with his instrument, and he has created his own unique style of sound. Ya gotta love it. Considering how long the guitar has been around, it's amazing that people can still create entirely new sounds and styles with the same old box and 6 strings.

Thanks Charles - in addition to having your head screwed on straight, you've got great taste.
