How Low Can the New York Times Go?

The New York Times airs a commercial for Iraqi terrorists. Yes, really.
You have to see it to believe it: Op-Ed: Know Thine Enemy.

It claims in the video that Sanchez came out against the war when that's false. Sanchez came out against the reporters that posted a negative view of the war. Obviously they're not going to come honest on this point.

Well, this is the newspaper that gave jihadis a heads up on their front page of an American government program that was successfully tracing them through their financial transactions. The NYT knowingly sabotaged this program and allowed the enemy to elude capture.
Why the editorial board was not tried on charges of treason, I will never understand.
This fawning piece of crap should be entitled "Identify with your enemy". Jihadis are laughing at the Grey Lady doing their work for them, and not charging them a penny!

The stock price will fall if other investment houses dump their holdings(which they probably will) but may then rise upon a private reorganization. That all depends on the dividends.

The Iraqi insurgency was set up ahead of time by Saddam Hussein, in collaboration with various AQ and other jihadists, many of them from other countries. The whole point was so that, if Saddam Hussein's regime were to be overturned, the jihadists would wreak havoc in revenge.

Interesting that they mention General Sanchez in the beginning.
Let's listen to the his words:
“Unfortunately, I have issued ultimatums to some of you for unscrupulous reporting that was solely focused on supporting your agenda and preconceived notions of what our military had done.”
“Almost invariably, my perception is that the sensationalistic value of these assessments is what provided the edge that you seek for self aggrandizement or to advance your individual quest for getting on the front page with your stories.”
“As I understand it, your measure of worth is how many front page stories you have written and unfortunately some of you will compromise your integrity and display questionable ethics as you seek to keep America informed.”
“It seems that as long as you get a front page story there is little or no regard for the ‘collateral damage’ you will cause. Personal reputations have no value and you report with total impunity and are rarely held accountable for unethical conduct.”
“The speculative and often uninformed initial reporting that characterizes our media appears to be rapidly becoming the standard of the industry.”
“Other major challenges are your willingness to be manipulated by ‘high level officials’ who leak stories and by lawyers who use hyperbole to strengthen their arguments. Your unwillingness to accurately and prominently correct your mistakes and your agenda-driven biases contribute to this corrosive environment.”
“All of these challenges combined create a media environment that does a tremendous disservice to America. Over the course of this war, tactically insignificant events have become strategic defeats for America because of the tremendous power and impact of the media and by extension, you, the journalist. In many cases, the media has unjustly destroyed the individual reputations and carriers of those involved.”
“When you assume that you are correct and on the moral high ground on a story, because we have not responded to questions you provided, is [sic] the ultimate arrogance and distortion of ethics. One of your highly-respected fellow journalists once told me that there are some amongst you who ‘feed from a pig’s trough’. If that is who I am dealing with, then I will never respond, otherwise we will both get dirty, and the pig will love it. This does not mean your story is accurate.”
“All are victims of the massive agenda-driven competition for economic or political supremacy. The death knell of your ethics has been enabled by your parent organizations who have chosen to align themselves with political agendas. What is clear to me is that you are perpetuating the corrosive partisan politics that is destroying our country and killing our service members who are at war...For some of you, just like some of our politicians, the truth is of little-to-no value if it does not fit your own pre-conceived notions, biases and agendas.”
Funny that Molly and Steve didn't mention any of those ain't it?

No one will ever be able to adequately describe the reasons for the Times hatred of America, and Israel.
We tolerate this crap because we are Americans, and blessed by the First Amendment to the Constitution. That's also, coincidently, the reason we allow islam in our midst.
Larry Flynt, once said something to the effect that "if ya want free speech, ya gotta put up with me." That's even more true regarding the Times.

Drudge, today, supplied the headline: Morgan Stanley dumped their stock. They had had a 20% share. And, they had also gone public, before they took this action, that they had asked the family to turn the stock into one that could be VOTED ON. Instead? The "family" of pinch, the idiot in charge, is one of nine family members. They won't be happy till what they have is sold at auction.
As to the "ad" ...
Is this worse than Petraeus? And, how they made his name into DEMOCRAPS BETRAY US? Because that's what happened when it boomeranged.
If Bush wasn't set on his "right of return" for the palestinians; and his creation of a terrorist state; his own poll numbers wouldn't be so down in the dumps. But he's back to exercising himself at "square one."
I don't think this favors Hillary, either.
Didn't they also get caught giving Move.On a "discount" for the Petraeus ad?
Meanwhile, Petraeus became much more publicly known. And, for the most part, influenced many Americans that he's a terrific general.
By the way, just as stuff travels on the Net; today at InstaPundit was an interesting factoid. Again, we are not in Vietnam, anymore! Officers are no longer FRAGGED!
Yes, I remember Mort Sahl coming out on stage. With the newspaper tucked under his arm. Referring to the headline (back in the late 1960's) ... so you know we were in Vietnam. And, he said:
The Pentagon is complaining that there are too many officers being fragged. And, he added: So what's the acceptable number?
Once the draft got flushed; which is worth thanking Nixon for! We became a country with a volunteer army. And, officers are not being fragged, now, at all.
I'd bet the Shi'a in Irak are still in 3rd place. It seems the arabs (sunni and shia, gambled on the wrong horses. And, Petraeus, with the surge, (and also demolishing Ramadi FIRST, so no snipers had a safe haven in which to "hang out." Got the sunnis to turn. And, to support being trained by the USA. Of course, you know the Kurds always had this. Always had security. And, are building their part of Iraq, like gangbusters.
The other number? We're matching the electricity output that Saddam supplied. Sure. It can get better. But it is on par with what the NY Times would call "Iraq's utopia."
The NYT is a very poorly run paper.
The Morgan Staney dump is disasterous for them, too. But they don't have economists who can fathom that fact.
Soon, the really bad news catches up with pinch. "C" students don't make great leaders. Family connections doesn't breed talent. Ditto for bush.

OT from the last thread, but only slightly
(thieves in disguise)
Barry Hussein Obama was on Leno tonight. The guy is sorta smart, very personable, and a raving moonbat (cradle-to-grave socialism, no civil rights under the 2nd Amendment, etc.). Along the way, in one of several swipes at President Bush, Obama implied that the President is not sober. He also referred to Alberto Gonzales' shredding of the Constitution. I've heard that a lot this week, and still can't figure out what the hell that refers to in the real world.
Leno asked him about the President's already-mischaracterized comment about the likelihood of World War III if Iran gets nukes. Obama hit all the Kerry-esque talking points about diplomacy, world pressure on Iran, and the need for foreign consensus on U.S. actions. He also stated that we have a war in Afghanistan, a war in Iraq, and are stretched too thin for another war.
Barry, words have meaning. We are not in multiple wars. We are in one War.
Afghanistan, Iraq, Israel, and other battle zones are not wars, they are campaigns in a much larger war. This distinction seems to be lost on most of the MSM, a large portion of Congress, pretty much the whole of Hollyweird, and a largish chunk of the public.
[Link: herbertsobel.blogspot.com...]
Yeah, Barry, we're stretched thin. The Army is capped at about 450,000 total soldiers at the moment, by Act of Congress. We had more than that in Viet Nam alone in the late '60s at the height of that war.

* "the administration's incompetence [sic] turned the venture [sic] into a failure"
* "the power [sic] of the insurgency doomed the occupation from the start"
* "This conclusion is based on recent Iraqi public opinion surveys by the BBC"
The first point is a John Kerry/DNC/Bin Laden talking point.
These points are reality based on an opinion poll?
Also, the propaganda film is titled "Meeting Resistance" -- as in the jihadis and bathists killing civilians and school children en masse are referred to as "resistance."

The Iraqi insurgency was set up ahead of time by Saddam Hussein, in collaboration with various AQ and other jihadists, many of them from other countries. The whole point was so that, if Saddam Hussein's regime were to be overturned, the jihadists would wreak havoc in revenge.
I tend to agree with that.

They have morals and intellect below that of masturbating monkeys.
I thought one of the big gripes about the western powers was that they created these artificial, inherently unstable countries out of the remains of the Ottoman empire. Yet the NooYorkSlimes expects us to believe that Iraqis are deeply patriotic and that is why they want us out? Puh-leeze.
Iraqis don't care about anything until the "occupation" ends? Tell that to the purple fingers.
Two thirds of Iraqis believe our departure would not lead to a broader civil war? I'd like to peer review their methods on that tidbit.
Plus I couldn't hear any sound, so they don't even know how to post a video online.

re: #73 American Soldier
There is a real problem with the size of our armed forces that needs to be addressed. A professional, standing army( which we have ALWAYS had) is fine during times of relative peace, but must be greatly expanded( and ALWAYS has been, historically by conscription) during times of war. If the military is comprised only of volunteer, paid professionals, what does one do with them when the war/need is over? The military has to be able to expand and contract, as needed.
We need a much larger military for now, and the foreseeable future, and the ability to contract our military after the job is done.
As you are well aware, this need NOT be a long, and protracted war, if the WILL is there.
An involuntary draft, or an extensive ready reserve force, as in Israel, seem to be the only apparent solutions.
Too bad that Bush didn't call for two million volunteers on 9-12, 'cause he'd have gotten them, but that's water long gone. We need to act soon to resolve this problem.

A choice quote:
And many American journalists often refer to those attacking Americans or Iraqi troops and policemen as "terrorists." Some are indeed using terrorist tactics, but calling them "terrorists" simply shuts down any sense of need or interest to look beyond that word, to understand why indeed human beings might be willing to die in a violent struggle to achieve their goal.

A NATION AT WAR: SURVIVORS; Journalists Tell of a Prison Filled With Screams
By ALAN FEUER
Published: April 3, 2003A day after their release from Iraqi custody, four Western journalists spoke for the first time publicly today about their incarceration in the Baghdad government's most notorious prison, saying they were exhausted by their eight-day ordeal but thrilled to have survived.
The four -- a correspondent and staff photographer from Newsday and two freelance photographers -- said they were not harmed by their captors but that they witnessed other prisoners being beaten.
''You could hear screams, mostly at night,'' said Matthew McAllester, 33, the Newsday reporter. ''They were beating prisoners in front of us, a yard or so away. I had to turn my back and lay looking at the walls.''
The journalists' accounts showed that the Abu Ghraib prison, 20 miles from Baghdad, had at least partly refilled. It was long a detention center for thousands of political as well as ordinary prisoners of the Hussein government, but was emptied last October when Mr. Hussein issued a blanket pardon after an election in which he was officially reported to have won 100 percent of the vote.
Mr. McAllester and the photographers -- Moises Saman, 29, of Newsday; Molly Bingham, 34, a freelancer who was the official photographer for Al Gore's presidential campaign; and Johan Spanner, 28, a Danish freelancer -- were arrested on March 25 at the Palestine Hotel in Baghdad. They said the secret police rousted them from their rooms, took their clothing, jewelry and watches and drove them to Abu Ghraib.
They said they were not informed about the accusations against them, but were asked -- politely, they said -- whether they were spies, where they had been, whom they had met and why they were in Baghdad.
Mr. McAllester and Mr. Saman had entered Iraq on visas granting them permission to write stories about peace activists who were working in the country. Ms. Bingham and Mr. Spanner came in on tourist visas. None of them had government minders, and they worked beyond the scope of their accreditation.
Molly must've lost her mind. She gets arrested by Saddam Hussein, thrown into Abu Ghraib, and then produces this propaganda piece?

They really did move it to 3 AM Eastern.
How stupid can you get? Do they really think people are going to tune-in in the same numbers for a Brit Hume re-run? To my knowledge TiVo still isn't covered in the ratings, so this might just play in someone's desire to see this show killed. It is the funniest show on TV. Our soldiers in Iraq have even had to watch this crap.
The film and the filmmakers were brought to Baghdad by the military's Red Team — an organization whose sole mission is to present alternative views about the enemy to U.S. troops. This was the last in a series of films on insurgencies sponsored by the Red Team.
Also in the series were classics of war and fighting insurgencies, like Gillo Pontecorvos' 1966 "The Battle of Algiers," the 2004 documentary "Control Room" about Al Jazeera, the Arabic satellite channel and the views it transmitted about the U.S. war in Iraq; it even screened a western, Fred Zinnemann's 1952 film "High Noon," about a sheriff trying to bring order to a lawless town whose citizens are too afraid to lift a finger to help him.
"We are literally the devil's advocate," said Red Team leader Lt. Col. Jeff Ragland. "It doesn't make you a popular guy, but it's a necessary thing."
Necessary, said Ragland, because defeating an insurgency is about more than killing the bad guys. "If we were to kill every insurgent tomorrow, would we win? If we don't do something to the motivation and the root cause, we're not likely to defeat it."
As the Camp Victory screening let out, soldiers mingled and chatted inside the massive and lavishly decorated lobby of Faw Palace. As if on cue, a mortar round exploded nearby, a sharp reminder that the insurgents are still out there.
Again...wtf?

It would be funny if it weren't so sad. The Battle of Algiers? Didn't turn out quite the way people thought it would. How many people were murdered during their "civil war"? And what did they say about their insurgents again, something about they developed the most bestial torture ever?
Sick, sick, sick.

I guess they've pushed the envelope too far for FOX and now, ala Hunter Thompson, Red Eye is DOOMED, what a shame!
I am seething! This is obviously a political manouver, who the hell else draws a 300,000 audience at 2 AM ET/1 AM CT? And I TiVo the show, as do many others (obviously because of the time), so none of us are counted in the ratings. So some douchebag can point to the show in three months and say, "See? It's not getting an audience.", and then kill it.
And yes, all of us Red Eye fans know that some people think the show is stupid or "childish" or whatever. That's fine and you don't have to watch it. For me personally, and I assume other fans, it keeps us sane in a way, because it appeals to our inner-ten-year-old.
A sense of humor is imperative for survival.

You got some nice pictures in there! You know how to handle a camera!
My only recommendations (and this can be the hard part) are:
First, now that you've got all these great pictures, prune away the duplicative ones. I've learned through long experience that one good photo is more effective than the same photo AND a similar photo of essentially the same thing. Each photo (whenever possible) should be completely unique! I often will take 200 photos, and the viewer will only see 30 of those! One need not upload all the photos one has.
Second: some of the photos have great imagery in them, but there is some extraneous stuff in the frame that's distracting to the eye. Solution: judicious cropping! Make it so that the viewer "gets" in an instant what the focus of the picture is. You've got the goods, for sure; but a few pictures could benefit from slicing off the peripheral bits.
I sense a citizen journalist on the rise. Now I'll have competition!

There has been a kind of agreement within the left to simply ignore whatever is actually going on in Iraq, and blithely repeat whatever propaganda supports their Vietnam analogy, no matter what its source or how tortured the logic. Sanchez is just the reincarnation of George B. McClellan. It's depressing to watch, but important to remember that what they're doing is drinking the cool-aid. It doesn't even amount to an opposition strategy. They don't care what the outcome is. It's a deep conviction, akin to the conviction of the jihadis and the ghost dancers of the 19th century, that if they're willing to destroy themselves for the cause then that alone legitimates it.
If this were actually true then whichever side was able to complete their suicide the fastest would be the winner. It's depressing logic, but the fact is, it's a sign they've given up. It's an act of despair.
So, you know... buck up. At some point they'll just be lying there, whimpering... without a shred of dignity left. It's 90% their problem. Don't try to shoulder it with them.

Nixxon oil... I see dead people... Just poop. This will be easy:
"GOVERNMENT HANDS OFF OF MY PANTS"

There's something to be said for that approach. I often take WAAAAYYYY too long editing my photos before finishing a report. And by the time I put it online, it's old news. I envy those people that can get the stuff up there ASAP, as you just did!
Maybe the solution is to get these online now, as you did, then keep working and editing and prune/crop the photos there subsequently.

Here's something interesting. Interesting in that somebody actually has the guts to suggest that a Saudi school in the US should be closed and interesting in that we even HAVE a Saudi government owned/run school for children in the US -
Panel recommends closing Saudi school in northern Virginia
A private Islamic school supported by the Saudi government should be shut down until the US government can ensure the school is not fostering radical Islam, a federal panel recommends.
In a report released Thursday, the US Commission on International Religious Freedom broadly criticized what it calls a lack of religious freedom in Saudi society and promotion of religious extremism at Saudi schools.
Particular criticism is leveled at the Islamic Saudi Academy, a private school serving nearly 1,000 students in grades K-12 at two campuses in northern Virginia's Fairfax County.
The commission's report says the academy hews closely to the curriculum used at Saudi schools, which they criticize for promoting hatred of and intolerance against Jews, Christians and Shi'ite Muslims.

US President George W. Bush says a nuclear Iran would mean World War III. Israeli newscasts feature Gog & Magog maps of the potential conflict.

Speaking of farm, I went up to the garden yesterday to harvest some Swiss Chard for a tart for dinner and some SOB had strolled into my private garden and cut down every scrap of two entire rows (as in ALL) of the Swiss Chard. Boy was I mad - chard stays good right through the winter!

I got the same thing Pink Freud. So then I added an "ic" to the islam and got 45K+ results. And right there on page 1 of them was a story about the Nation of Islam with the "islam" highlighted as my search term.
I wonder who owns/controls Google these days. To block a term from a database search at a search engine has to be deliberately done.

I guess that I have become somewhat immune to the on-going outright treason that the New York Times has exhibited for years. Not "accepting of" - just that nothing they do could surprise me anymore, not after the numerous times over the last few years that they have deliberately released state secrets, published things that were outright gimmes to terrorists and done their absolute damndest to overthrow our government.
And this is nothing new for the slimes. Back during WWII they were THE prime movers & shakers behind the burying of any knowledge about the Holocaust on page D-54 in fine print between the advertising. Now connect that with their slogan - "All the news that's fit to print." In other words, if they don't choose to run a story then that story is not important or is a lie.
They should be put out of business. And it looks like Morgan Stanley is having a go at that.

The Vth Column has had an enormous head start. Something like 80 years or so to infiltrate and subvert the education, media, and political systems.
They've had set backs - Tailgunner Joe, the fall of the Soviet Union, among others - But they've never deviated from their course.
They're entrenched deep now and digging in deeper every single day.
If the digging seems a bit more frenzied these days, it's because people like Charles, and numerous other like minded bloggers, are shining the cold harsh light of truth on those entrenchments. Exposing them for the corrosive and destructive element within, that they are.
...And always were...

That was invented during the horrible Spanish Civil War. General Queipo de Llano, Franco's man on the airwaves used to have a propaganda program from Seville to Republican Spain and one day when Franco's army was marching over Madrid, Queipo de Llano said: "Right now four armed columns are marching over Madrid, and there's a fifth column inside"
The next few days hundreds of people were shot with the suspition they were moles for the enemy.
This happened in 1939.

Good for you. I went off to college again in my forties too. One of the things that I noticed in a big way was that the things my teachers had drilled into me were still there somewhere while the kiddos had not the first half a clue. Nobody could solve a quadratic equation. The biochem professor handed out this outrageously "hard" problem that ran something like "If a red blood cell is ___ x ____ and a hemoglobin molecule has a diameter of ____, how many hemes in an RBC." He even gave something like a week to come up with an answer. Not happening. I was appalled.

Now this man sounds like somebody we should keep in office!
North Carolina Rep. Walter Jones Calls for Inquiry of Army General Involved in Soldier Scrutiny
WASHINGTON — Republican Rep. Walter Jones has asked the Pentagon to open an investigation of a high-ranking Army official who is at the center of two probes involving possible wrongdoing by U.S. forces in Afghanistan.Jones, of North Carolina, said he believes Lt. Gen. Frank Kearney has overstepped his authority in the investigations and in turn is hurting troops' morale.
"When men and women are asked to go to war for this country, then in my humble opinion they should be given every benefit of the doubt, and if there are any questions then they should not be handled in the press," Jones said in an interview with FOX News.
Two incidents in particular have caught Jones' attention. One involves a gunfight following a March 4 car bombing of a Marine convoy in Bandikot, Afghanistan, which ended with 19 Afghan civilians reported dead, and an Army colonel apologizing for the incident that he called "a stain on the forces' honor."
The colonel authorized payment of reparations to the victim's families before a military criminal investigation was complete.
Kearney, who at the time was major general in charge of Special Operations in Afghanistan, and has since been given a three-star general rank, ordered the unit pulled out of Afghanistan.
The Marines have since ordered their own investigation, which Kearney is not in charge of, although Kearney's involvement brought criticism for coloring the investigation before its completion. Kearney has said in the past that the hostile environment in Afghanistan meant the unit could no longer operate there and needed to be pulled out of theater immediately.
In a separate incident in October 2006, Kearney demanded reopening an inquiry into two Green Berets who killed an Afghan enemy combatant as Afghan police tried to take him into custody.
Afghan police in Ster Kheyl near the Pakistan border asked the Green Beret unit to help detain a known enemy combatant. The U.S. commander remained on a hill 100 yards from the combatant's home. The Afghan came out, identified himself and after a series of confused hand gestures from the Afghan police, the U.S. commander ordered his sniper to fire, killing the Afghan from 100 feet away, according to military reports.
More - worth reading it all. [Link: www.foxnews.com...]

Cool - especially the part about turning the state around. It seems to me that the powers that be in Louisiana showed where their interests lay in no uncertain terms at the time of Katrina - and it sure as all get out is not with the people of Louisiana. They should each and every one get the out-of-office memo as fast as the boot can be delivered.

Even many of the teachers are close to illiterate, especially in the elementary schools. And they are all marching to the "there is no such thing as intelligence, we are all the same" drummer.

I never buy at Home Depot if I can help it either. I was more than happy yesterday to patronize our local Ace hardware, where I discovered everything I needed all in one place without having to walk so many miles in the store to find it I was a cripple. And they have everything I need for the garden come spring. And I can rent a rototiller.
Yes, I do recall "Feliz Navidad" and if I think about it I might still be able to drag "Happy Birthday" out of my old brain. Once upon a time long ago and far away I could actually read Cervantes and Unamuno in Spanish. Been years since I have thought of more than wading through a cookbook or lending the neighbors a hand though. And haven't had any Spanish speaking neighbors in a decade or more.

That is really sad. A few weeks ago I took my 10 year old daughter along to help me pick out some new clothes. There were some racks with 30% off, some with 20% and so on. When we found an item we liked I would ask her to figure out what the price would be after the discount. When she got the answer I would ask her to figure out the price after the 6% tax was added. She would take a while to figure it out but she would get it, and it made for a fun little game while we shopped.

Started learning Spanish when I was 11. The teacher that I had for most of the 7 years I studied Spanish was a man from Argentina - German guy, born in Argentina. We were not allowed to speak English to him and he not only taught us Spanish, he taught us three or four different dialects of Spanish.
That's it lat! Taking time to show things to your kids is so fundamental!
And so many parents are AWOL on this...

That is how I teach math too. Cooking is great for fractions by the way. Especially baking a double batch of something. And if you want to teach statistics and graphing, bring home a bag of the colored candy hearts come Valentine's.

Started learning Spanish when I was 11. The teacher that I had for most of the 7 years I studied Spanish was a man from Argentina - German guy, born in Argentina. We were not allowed to speak English to him and he not only taught us Spanish, he taught us three or four different dialects of Spanish. And to think in Spanish rather than just be able to translate it back and forth.

Ah, but then I ran afoul of a "teacher" out of an American college who spoke only American "Spanish" - the kind we teach in schools here that is not really the Spanish that anyone anywhere speaks - who could not herself think in Spanish, so insisted that we spend every minute translating back and forth to her satisfaction. And graded students by whether or not they were going on her trip to Spain in the summer. NOT pretty, definitely not pretty! (That was the ONLY year she taught Spanish though. Very short career the woman had.)

That it is. I got this when my folks came to visit me when I lived in Germany. Dad - former US Navy in WWII - got to talking with Hebert (my landlord) who had been an engineer at Peenemunde. I got to translate back and forth for the two of them and was surprised at how competent I had become, since I had learned German from a 7 year old.

And THIS, Miguel, is one of the KEY DISTINCTIONS between posters here and at Kos (for example).
By taking time to engage our children in meaningful, developmental ways, we infuse and instill in them our values, our respect for humans (no matter how young) and our love of learning, as we are TEACHING BY EXAMPLE that we don't hear their curiosity as 'stupid questions' and by our patient responses, reinforce their sense of self-esteem and worth.
"Excuse me, Daddy, but why does she say it like that?"
I could say, "I have no time to answer that now," but truth is, I can FIND time to answer briefly and meaningfully, right now!

littleoldlady, check out Half.com for cheap textbooks. My girls are all working on some degree or other and flatly refuse to pay full price for some of the crap that passes as text books these days. And you can sell them back yourself on half for a lot more than you will get down at the college bookstore.

Small world! I'm co-writing a screenplay with an expat German who was 13 when he was living outside Berlin, living in a SAFE place from Allied bombing, there on the Peenemunde peninsula, when the whole horizon erupted in gouts of orange flame, silent for the first few seconds, until the sound came thundering onto him and his young friends...
And that's fun, but the awareness of how fluent and capable we're becoming in our new language is always a positive thrill, Granny!

My son is 27 now, but when he was growing up I would spend at least a couple of hours a day teaching him things. Half hour for Catechism and the rest we would talk about all kinds of things, seeking to complement school.

Ok dammit, I am still awake, so I had to respond to the textbook conversation.
This year alone, I bought two books that would have cost me 250 for the both of them. They were both "new editions" ... but the previous edition had been used the semester before. I asked both profs for permission to use the prior edition. Both said yes. I got one on ebay for 2.00 and another for 18.00. So far, I have not found a word's difference between the expensive ones my classmates have and my prior edition.

And a good thing it is you have it too. English teachers seem to think nothing of ordering up 20 books for one lousy class. Just thank your lucky stars it is English rather than anything at all in science, medicine or computing. Add any of those three words to a book and the price skyrockets. Even nearly 20 years ago it was not unusual to lay out close to $200 for a single book in science or medicine.

I can also read a little French, Portuguese and Italian if I must - though mostly kitchen stuff.
All of our languages are pretty directly descended from Latin. And a good chunk of English is pretty directly German. I was lucky enough to go to school back in the days when before you could take any language class you had to take one full year of Latin. Once you know Latin (and you can certainly acquire most of the vocab in a year or so) then the rest just aren't that hard to learn. Latin is also the key to science and medicine, what they hide behind to keep those disciplines out of the reach of the normal person, keep them mysterious and "difficult."
I'm making the kiddo learn Latin now.
