I have a bit of experience with juries and looooong trials. What I observed was a tendency of many of the attorneys to make themselves look good "professionally" at the expense of clarity of presentation. In other words, they were looking to increase their reputation and standing amongst their peers rather than making things clear to the jury.

Let's hope the government learned its lesson with the HLF. Lord, they're lucky that they're being given the chance to retry the case.

Following the seizure in Europe of hollowed-out shoes containing blasting caps, U.S. authorities have been told to be on the lookout for thick-soled shoes that could be used to conceal explosives, as infamously was the case with convicted "shoe bomber" Richard Reid.

According to a Department of Homeland Security-FBI bulletin issued Wednesday, Oct. 24, European authorities in September 2007 discovered a pair of shoes that were used to smuggle electric blasting caps across international borders for use in a terrorist attack...

Well, yes and no. It's a mistrial, not an acquittal.

Let's be clear: In declaring a mistrial, the judge threw out all the acquittals except those in favor Mohammed El-Mezain, and even he still faces a charge of felony conspiracy. As a result, HLF is still very much "on the hook," as are all of the other defendants.

From the U of D story,

I am also not sure how I feel about being on the same panel with an Israeli soldier who was stationed in West Bank. Some people see IDF as an occupying force in the West Bank. I am not sure that I will be comfortable occupying the same space with him. It is not fair to spring this surprise on me at the last moment.

The fair and correct thing for them to have done would have been to write him back saying...
"We are sorry you feel this way and will understand if you do not wish to appear on the panel, however we will continue without you if that is what you wish."

Of course this is a University and "fair" and "correct" are not in their playbook.

"Convert to Islam?" Because some big bad billionaire who lives in caves, if he's still alive, tells me to? Because my personal dedication, amongst 303 million other people, would ultimately save more more lives and resources from a supposedly pseudo-war on terrorism? These Kos members pride themselves on alternative thinking and logic, seeing through big lies big government throws at us. But that is just plain stupidity. To merely suggest that 300 million people ought to be subjected to a form of Islam that is so hateful and repressive disgusts me, as do the people that support that as a means to acquiesce these terrorists.

Wow..Pamela at Atlas Shrugs is really digging into her defense of groups that Charles is suspicious about.

The truth may be somewhere in between.

It really worries me to see this fracas, because it feels more emotional than rational, and we need each other for the coming catastrophe. Political alliances are more business relationship than friendship, and provide the venue for drawing people of shared interests into closer agreement on an ever expanding panoply of issues.

Coordination of effort with the Sweden Democrats should be based on current good behavior and shared interests, not past allegations. Our U.S. Democrats have no trouble putting a married mother, a draft dodger, a beer drinking union mechanic, a convicted felon, an illegal alien, and a naked homosexual with an exposed erect penis under the same tent. We can be true to our core beliefs while building a working coalition of the partially like minded.

While I appreciate Charles' abhorrence of racial hatred, this issue has somehow hit a nerve beyond what I am used to seeing, and something feels wrong about it.

Pray for unity in defense of our God given freedoms, human rights, and personal responsibility.

What is a "man in the middle attack" and how much of a threat is it?

/no Googling

A "man in the middle attack" is a type of attack where an eavesdropper has been listening in on a supposedly secure conversation between two parties from the very beginning.

Because of this "the man in the middle" knows your secrets (passwords, encryption keys, whatever) and is able to intercept and read (or even surreptitiously alter) communications between both parties without their knowledge while both parties believe that their conversation is still secure when in fact their entire conversation has been compromised from the start.

That's it in a nutshell. The mechanics of a real MIM attack are much more complicated.

As for the seriousness of a MIM attack the degree of seriousness would depend on the nature of the compromised conversation beyond the troubling nature of someone eaves dropping on you without your knowledge. If you're simply having an innocuous internet chat not very serious at all. If you are the victim of a MIM attack while accessing your bank account then that's clearly not a good thing.

Just FYI, in case you hadn't heard, Red Eye has been given a new Saturday show at 11 PM Eastern. New episode, not a repeat. I don't know why FOX News would put up a show in direct competition with a FOX Television entity, i.e. MAD TV, but maybe they're looking to drain viewers from the first third of SNL. I don't know. Set your DVR.

I thought you might want to know since FOX makes almost zero effort to push their own awesomely awesome show, for whatever reason people might conspire about.

Thanks, that's pretty much what I thought.

/what do you do or who (corporation) do you go to to protect from it?

That's one I really cannot answer for you beyond the usual advice of making sure that your computer(s) and network are free from spyware and trojans.

If you thought you being eavesdropped on in some fashion over the internet (packet sniffed) or something then changing your ISP might be a step in the right direction after making sure you're secured everything on your end.

Corporate scale.

If I had to point someone somewhere for something like that it would probably be BT Counterpane founded by Bruce Schneier.

Rationally speaking, it doesn't make sense to convert to Islam now because:
1/that WON'T STOP Islamist's hateful, murderous actions against kffir; and
2/the Mahdi has already come in the Person of Baha'u'llah, Whose teachings are already changing the face of human culture, social interaction, legal dynamics and educational constructs.

Islam today is ONLY VALID inasmuch as it has prophecies and traditions legitimizing the Glory of God, and encouraging obedience to Him.

Which, strangely enough, allows no racism, no misogyny, no elitism, no homosexual-bashing, begging or mendicancy, laziness or sloth, no irresponsibility for one's life... so many of the things that Islamists hate America and the West for promoting are, in fact, allowed by the Glory of God.

Internet/network interface security question. Oh sure I could Google it, but I think it'll be more fun to ask here. I think I know what it is.

What is a "man in the middle attack" and how much of a threat is it?

/no Googling

It's a vulnerability, particularly on local networks (ie, ethernet, simple WiFi) where a computer A in communication with computer B (not necessarily local) via packets which anyone can monitor at some point (particularly on the local net, wi-fi area, etc). Any third computer C can fib to both A and B, by pretending to be B (so far as A can know) and pretending to be A (so far as B can know), and can monitor, record (and even fudge) the content of the communications, in both directions.

At a local WiFi hotspot, for instance, when you think you've connected to the internet via the service provided by the establishment, you might actually be connected thru someone else's WiFi-enabled laptop nearby. And that means your communications may be recorded, spoofed, corrupted, or re-routed somewhere else (like China), in realtime.
