Fred Phelps Freaks Lose Big

Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 4:59:31 pm PDT

The Fred Phelps hate cult is $10.9 million poorer today: Father of slain Marine wins case against funeral protesters.

The brokenhearted father of a Marine killed in Iraq won a long-shot legal fight today after a federal jury in Baltimore awarded him nearly $11 million in a verdict against members of a Kansas church who hoisted anti-gay placards at his son’s Westminster funeral.

The jury’s announcement 24 hours after deliberations first began was met with tears and hugs from the family and supporters of Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, whose March 2006 funeral was protested by members of the Westboro Baptist Church with signs including “Thank God for dead soldiers.”

Snyder’s father, Albert, won on every count of his complaint, as well as $2.9 million for compensatory damages and $8 million for punitive damages.

Y'know, I really hate it when people sue for "emotional distress" and are awarded huge sums of money, as if cash could ever make up for that. I always thought the point of lawsuits was supposed to be recovering actual, tangible damages.

But in this case, I don't mind quite so much. These knuckleheads really have it coming.

This verdict is most appreciated.

Protesting at funerals is really a vile tactic.

I wouldn't even protest at Osama bin Ladden's funeral (although I might spit on his grave afterwards).

Knowing the legal system as I do, one of two things will happen (provided there is no reversal on appeal and after all appeals are exhausted); plaintiffs' counsel will run this execrable church into the ground like Morris Dees and did to Tom Metzger some years back. No one's heard from Tom Metzger for a few years now. Here's hoping it does not turn into a Goldman v. Simpson collection scenario.

The second, and, sadly, more probable scenario, is that the individual church members will keep it up, forming themselves in a new church or some other organization that might somehow insulate them from personal liability if they get sued.

Some have theorized that the Phelps cult is bankrolled by leftists as a black propaganda operation to discredit conservative Christianity.

It’s a little tin-foilish but not too much of a stretch given the small number of people involved and Phelps’s known ties to liberal politicians.

It is hard to account for how this group of fewer than 100 people can afford to keep one or more large gangs traveling around the country almost all the time.
They have even traveled overseas, notably to Iraq where they were guests of Saddam Hussein at an anti-American conference that also featured such Soros-backed traitors as Ramsey Clark and Tom Hayden.

I think a few more steps need to be taken to make sure that Mr. Phelps and his kin don't spread their poison any farther.

1. No more extra police for security. They can pay for their own bodyguards out of pocket.

2. The police in any town that they are protesting in become hyper vigilant in enforcing the laws. Spitting on the sidewalk, failing to signal for a turn, jaywalking...guess what? You get a ticket! Now if you're not one of Phelp's cronies, you get an apology and sent on your way. Otherwise, you get to show up in court at a later date.

I think a few rounds of this will help cut back on the protests at funerals.

If I recall correctly, word at the time was that the group really wanted to be banned from protesting -- so they could sue for damages. They did have their protest, but they were masked from the mourners by plenty of counter demonstrators, who lined the roads for several miles. There was zero local support for him.

I think he was a lawyer before he became a 'minister.' Now disbarred.

40, Song and Dance, I defer to your knowledge of evangelicals and their aspirations. I am giving this church the benefit of a doubt because of their faith, but I do feel they have been led astray into a cult like you. Now they have lost a major suit and when this happens the parent cult dissolves into smaller and even more fanatical units. I am hoping the feds are keeping an eye on these people. Knowing the feds and seeing that the cult is not Muslim and white Christians, there is no doubt in my mind that the Feds are keeping a very close eye on them, because they are not protected by the federal political correctness doctrine. Expect the news reports to be hammed up by the MSM because being a Christian trumps anti-war activities with liberals.

Some years ago, the Phelpers started buying up adjacent houses near their church in Topeka, until they owned the whole block. They tore out all the intervening fences, built a big fence around the whole thing and connected some of the houses with a labyrinth of covered passages. Though still technically a set of separate residences, it is in fact a fortified compound.

How could showing up at a private, and profoundly moving event in the life of one family and harassing them for something they have nothing to do with ever be considered Christian or anyone who viciously engages in such harassment?
The behavior really doesn't make any sense at all, what's the logic of picketing at soldiers' funerals with the bizarro excuse that America is tolerating gays - unless ...
If anything, they evoke Liberal Left hate for the military. This "Christian Church" moniker is nonsense, it should be "Phelps Church." That's who's boss there, not Jesus. Using "gays" as the excuse seems to be cynically crafted to push certain buttons in their target audience, which isn't the put-upon mourners, but the national audience. These mean people with their placards are then presented on the MSM, as the "face" of Christians. Just a perfect fit.

The New Testament gives us directions on how to tell actual Christians apart from the bogus ones.

One way is to go over what the New Testament says about the 'fruits of the Spirit,' some of which are peace, love, and joy.

A real Christian will have those characteristics (though we're not perfect all the time).

Fred Phelps and Pals don't exhibit any of those qualities, so I seriously doubt they're true Christians.

I'm not against Christians speaking out against sin of any type, but the Bible instructs us to do so with love and from a motive of love.

Carrying placards at funerals reading "God Hates Fags" - as Phelps does - is obviously not loving.

What the Phelps people stand for is vile and sickening, and completely irrational. That said, I am somewhat concerned that they are being sued for exercising their first ammendment rights. Yes, they are crude and despicable people, but should a court be able to fine people for what they believe? It is similar to the hate crime laws which punish folks for "thought crimes".
I certainley support restrictions on these people, and feel that the soldiers family was violated (and due some sort of compensation) but $11 million? How much money was awarded to the Goldmans after OJ murdered their son? It frightens me when juries act on their emotions, especially when it involves free speech.

Gore and Wife Tipper Headlined Fundraiser at Phelps' Topeka Home; Phelps Family Reportedly Invited to Clinton-Gore Inaugurations in 93 and 97

(WASHINGTON) Reports linking Vice President Al Gore with notorious anti-gay activist Fred Phelps, Jr., and the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas were confirmed with the release of photographs showing Gore at a fundraiser at the home of Fred Phelps, Jr., who told the Conservative News Service on October 16 that he served as a Gore delegate on the floor of the Democratic National Convention in Atlanta in 1988.

Gore, who was quoted by the Nashville Tennessean in 1984 saying homosexuality is not "an acceptable alternative that society should affirm" and said in his 1984 U.S. Senate race that he would not accept money from gay rights organizations and that he opposed a "gay bill of rights," reportedly sought the support of the Phelps family in his 1988 presidential campaign, and invited the Phelps' to the Clinton-Gore inaugurations of January 1993 and January 1997.

Yes, and God does not hate anyone.

God hated Easu (Rom. 9:13), because he despised his birthright. God hates the works of the Nicolatians (Rev. 2:6) (nico, over; lati, common; over the common person, an arrogant hierarchy).

He does hate the actions of people, not the person.

This verdict is most appreciated.

Protesting at funerals is really a vile tactic.

I wouldn't even protest at Osama bin Ladden's funeral (although I might spit on his grave afterwards).

what I would put on his grave won't pass for daisies.

Proverbs states that God hates sowers of discord.

These people are nothing if not sowers of discord.

Dante's Divine Comedy has sowers of discord has them in the ninth chasm of hell. Mahomet is there, according to Dante.

I think these people may want to rethink what they are doing. Being disemboweled for eternity (again, Dante) does not appeal.

Nicolaitans = The Cleresy. Those who lord it over the church. I call them the gospel merchants.

My church has no clergy, just elders from the congregation.

Be very careful or we will have a dictatorship by the most easily offended. Yes, Phelps is pure scum. But on public property he can speak. But I think he can be held back a enough feet to be barely tolerable for the cause of free speech. I want to be able to put a Danish Cartoon in my car window at work or on a public street....

I interviewed members of the Phelps clan in D.C. during their protest of the troops.

You simply must meet their children.

I wouldn't be too worried, it must be pretty clear what the creep was doing was well out side the 1st amendment.

#108, mama winger,

Yes, that makes sense, and I fully support any regulations which would protect the grieving family from this sort of intrusion. I am, however, concerned that this is an attempt by a jury to silence speech which they dislike.

From Wikipedia:

The church at Westboro which he leads has 71 confirmed members, 60 of whom are related to Phelps through blood or marriage or both.

From what I've gathered, that's the extent of his "following." So it's curious that he gets as much press as he does. He's very far out there in the fringes of society and religion, but yet everyone knows him. And I suspect we can thank libs and the MSM for that, because what he says and does can be used by libs for promoting their agenda, and it also helps the MSM boost their ratings. But out in the real world, he's nothing but a fringe nutcase who deserves to be ignored at best, arrested at worse.

Sometimes the laws of gravity work. Mr Phelps may be poorer now but he should look up to check for a falling piano every time he passes an open window.
