Pipe Bomb at Palo Verde Nuclear Plant?

Fri, Nov 2, 2007 at 12:07:09 pm PDT

A scary story out of Arizona: Arizona Nuclear Plant on Lockdown.

PHOENIX (AP) - Security officials at the nation’s largest nuclear power plant detained a contract worker with a small explosive device in the back of his pickup truck Friday, authorities said.

The worker was stopped and detained at the entrance of the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, said U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesman Victor Dricks. Security officials then put the nuclear station on lockdown, prohibiting anyone from entering or leaving the facility.

Authorities described the device as a small capped pipe that contained suspicious residue. Capt. Paul Chagolla with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said sheriff’s officials have rendered the device safe and that investigators were interviewing the worker.

Depends on who was working the gate that day and time. He may not have had them look into the bed of his truck before or at best it was hit and miss. If he thought he could get by with it why not just toss it in the back with his other stuff and hope it would get overlooked.
I am waiting on more details of this explosive device which so far they have categorized as a pipe bomb.

Yes, but a contract worker isnt actually employed by the company. Some 'contract workers' stand on street corners waiting for the construction company truck to pick them up and take them to the job site.

I hopw this story isn't related to the pipe bomb...

Expert: Hamas, Hizbullah cells may be active in Mexico

The US is concerned that Hamas and Hizbullah agents may penetrate the porous US-Mexican border in order to carry out terrorist attacks, according to Robert Grenier, the former head of the US Central Intelligence Agency's counterterrorism center.

His comments were featured in a report published by the Mexican press on Thursday.

Speaking at an event in Mexico, Grenier—who now runs his own international security firm called Kroll—said that reports indicate the United States is fearful that Iran, Hamas, and/or Hizbullah may seek to set up operations in Mexico in order to carry out terrorist attacks in the US.

According to the US counterterrorism expert, American officials are concerned that terrorists will tap into illegal immigrant and/or drug trafficking networks in order to use them to bring people and equipment into the US.

The former CIA official added that the American government is also fearful that Hamas and Hizbullah sleeper cells are already operational in Mexico; and, that Hizbullah is funneling money from Mexico into to Lebanon to fund the organization's operations there.

I've been worried about this for a long time. What took them so long to figure it out?

A Canadian warship steamed out of Halifax harbour on Thursday to resume patrols in the Persian Gulf and gain intelligence on potential terrorist activity in the volatile region.

Hundreds of weeping family members lined the military dock as HMCS Charlottetown made its way out to sea to begin a six-month mission involving surveillance, boarding suspicious vessels and ensuring the safety of a waterway that's key to the international trade of oil.

Commander Patrick St-Denis said the ongoing naval presence is vital in the area despite criticisms that the Canadian contingent has apprehended few terrorists or acquired valuable intelligence since 2001...

The Halifax-class patrol frigate will be taking part in Operation Altair, part of Canada's contribution to Operation Enduring Freedom, the code-name for the American-led war on terror.

...the ship will be an integral part of a USN strike group led by the carrier USS Harry S. Truman. HMS Manchester will also be part of the group.

G-d speed our Canadian men & women in uniform.

Authorities described the device as a small capped pipe that contained suspicious residue.

This does not even sound like a pipe bomb.
