Yon: On Patrol with the Iraqi National Police

Thu, Nov 15, 2007 at 9:15:41 am PST

Michael Yon emailed this photograph from Baghdad, with the following caption:

Soldiers from 2-2 SCR patrol through what months ago were some of the most dangerous streets of all Iraq: South Baghdad. Months ago this likely would have resulted in a serious firefight. Tonight, 14 November 2007, we patrolled with members of the Iraqi National Police. All along the way people were happy to see us. Stores were opening. Kids were playing soccer or following us block after block. Some adults were playing ping-pong here and there, while others welcomed us to talk, including a couple of older Iraqi women who talked on and on and on, until finally the soldiers had to make an excuse to leave. I’ve seen this in many places in Iraq. When the older women get a chance to tell about their neighborhood, they want to tell about the whole neighborhood – on and on and on. Sometimes the soldiers make fake radio calls so they can leave.

OT:
Headline reads that IAEA finds Iran generally truthful on nuclear program.

The article tells a slightly different tale:

A report from the U.N nuclear watchdog agency on Thursday found Iran to be generally truthful about key aspects of its nuclear history, but it warned that its knowledge of Tehran's present atomic work was shrinking.

The International Atomic Energy Agency report, released to its 35 board members, also confirmed that Tehran continued to defy the U.N. Security Council by ignoring its repeated demands to freeze uranium enrichment, a potential pathway to nuclear arms.

How can it know the truthfulness of the Iranian nuclear program if its knowledge base is shrinking because Iran isn't providing as much detail? Only in IAEA wonderland can that be deemed truthful.

I hope all people in iraq will live to see how wondrous life in a democracy can be.

I hope religious fanatics don't get a hold in their politics... this is my worst fear... just look at the countries around Iraq: Iran, Saudi Arabia, Syria... Etc, etc, etc, etc....

What damage is the stone age culture of those countries doing to western countries like the UK.. imagine what could happen in iraq once she's "stable"...

I am so proud of our men and women over there and everywhere who don the uniforms of our services. How brave, how strong and how very fine they all are! Afghanistan - The distributor of a new translation of the Koran has been arrested after complaints from religious scholars that the new edition was un-Islamic.

Former journalist Ghows Zalmay is also the spokesman for Afghanistan's attorney general.

He was arrested on the border on Sunday while trying to flee into Pakistan.

Demonstrators protested in two Afghan provinces against the new translation of the Koran into Dari, one of Afghanistan's two official languages.

Religious scholars are outraged at the new edition of the Muslim holy book.

They say that it is un-Islamic, that it misinterprets verses about alcohol, begging, homosexuality and adultery.

They also complain that it does not contain the original version in Arabic as a parallel text for comparison.

Both houses of the Afghan parliament have held emergency debates.

Senators have called for Mr Zalmay and the translator, himself a mullah, to be punished.

One said Mr Zalmay was "worse than Salman Rushdie", whose book, The Satanic Verses, caused widespread outrage in the Islamic world.

Another said Mr Zalmay was under the protection of a foreign security company.

In the northern city of Taloqan 1,500 university students took to the streets in protest, while in the south-east province of Nimruz 1,000 local people, including several mullahs, took part in a demonstration.

The Afghan constitution enshrines freedom of expression, but for many Afghans that freedom has clear limits and they do not include making interpretive translations of the Koran
