Video: Former Gitmo Muslim Chaplain on Koran Desecration

Tue, Nov 20, 2007 at 11:45:39 am PST

Former Guantanamo Bay Muslim chaplain James Yee went on Syrian television October 19, and described the horrors of Koran desecration and female nudity that he witnessed ... oh wait, he didn’t actually witness anything. But that doesn’t stop him from uncorking some amazingly lurid descriptions for Syrian TV anyway. (Courtesy of MEMRI TV.)

Click picture to play video. Requires Windows Media Player; Mac users should install Flip4Mac.

Interviewer: How was religion being used against those prisoners [in Guantanamo Bay]?

Yee: Great question. One, we’ve all heard how the Koran has been desecrated down in Guantanamo and as Koran, the holy Koran - the words which Muslims all over the world consider the literal words of God – was being desecrated in Guantanamo in many different ways.

Interviewer: It was thrown into toilets and whatever, that’s what we read.

Yee: The initial report that was printed by Newsweek indicated that perhaps the Koran was thrown into a toilet by an interrogator. It was unfortunate, that Newsweek had to retract that story, but I talked firsthand with prisoners who were held in Camp X-Ray, which was the first prison camp of Guantanamo, very early on in 2002, and prisoners told me directly that the Korans that they had brought with them were tossed into buckets - buckets which were used as toilets in that makeshift camp. I myself...

Interviewer: So... Buckets basically of urine and feces, is that correct?

Yee: Right, right, exactly. This was before I got there and this was in Camp X-Ray, where, again, it was a quick makeshift prison, set up for the first prisoners who arrived there. When I got there, Camp Delta, which was a little more sturdy and each cell had its own toilet, was already built by the time I got to Guantanamo in late 2002. The Korans were thrown on the floor by guards when they conducted cell searches. It has been reported and I have learned now that interrogators also were throwing the Korans on the floor or stomping on it. This was happening when I was there, and this was an issue.

Interviewer: You actually saw this happening?

Yee: I didn’t see it because I wasn’t a part of the intelligence operation, but I was aware directly from the prisoners, when they came to me with the complaints and concerns. It became such an issue that prisoners carried out massive protests. Some of them even attempted suicide in response to how awful the Koran was being abused. So this is something that was occurring, was addressed officially...

Interviewer: And did it stop?

Yee: ...by myself and many others down in Guantanamo. It did come to a stop at a certain point. And one of the reasons is when one of the prisoners attempted suicide, the intelligence officers got a little bit smart, because they realized at that point that if a prisoner ended up killing himself, then they could no longer interrogate that prisoner. So they said we don’t want prisoners killing themselves...

Interviewer: Because we can’t put them to use anymore.

Yee: Exactly, but it was them who were driving them towards these suicide attempts by desecrating the Koran.

[...]

Yee: I learned from the prisoners that female interrogators were a big part of the intelligence gathering operation, and I recall even the commander of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Major General Jeffery Miller, often saying in media interviews that female interrogators were very creative in their approach to gathering intelligence and conducting interrogations.

Interviewer: What did he mean by “creative?”

Yee: What was actually going on in these interrogation rooms with these female interrogators was that they were very ready to conduct their interrogation by stripping off their clothes, being nude in front of Muslim prisoners, thinking that Muslims who come from a conservative Muslim society might break or be shattered by this type of behavior. But they went farther than that, and they would inappropriately rub their bodies against these prisoners. It has even been reported, and suggested in FBI memos that have been subsequently released, that female interrogators even went so far as grabbing the genitals of Muslim male prisoners in the course of interrogating them. For me, as a Muslim, and for many of the other Muslim Americans who were down there, when we learned of this, we thought this was not only degrading towards the prisoner, we thought this was degrading towards...

Interviewer: The women themselves.

Yee: ...The women themselves who are engaging in this type of behavior. But we can take that even a step further, and say this was degrading to all women. Because what was essentially happening, these women were presenting themselves as simply sex objects and this is not how we should view women in any society.

[...]

Yee: And in my view, it happened to me – all of this – because of three reasons: One reason is because I am a Muslim, and in this post 9/11 era, in the West, in America, we find this tremendous anti-Muslim hostility and Islamophobia, in which, all Muslims are see as potential terrorists. And I’m a Muslim, an American Muslim, and I believe that played a large role in why I was targeted. The second is because of my ethnicity - I’m a Chinese American. I learned that when I was...

Interviewer: So you are not blond and blue eyed and whatever.

Yee: Yes. I learned that when I was under investigation someone had said of me: “Who the hell does this Chinese Taliban think he is, telling us how to treat our prisoners?” So the fact that I was called a Chinese Taliban is an indication that my ethnicity also played a role. That third reason was because I was objecting to the cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment of prisoners down in Guantanamo. I believe this threatened many of those who were engaged in that possibly unlawful conduct, and I believe people might have been afraid that I was going to go public, because I was someone who actually interviewed with the media on a weekly basis, as the Muslim chaplain down in Guantanamo.

It is irking me no end that someone who has no personal knowledge of these "events" is commenting. Do I doubt that these events may have occurred? No I don't it is an interrogation technique plain and simple. Do I think that interrogators need respect the Koran or any other "holy" or "manifesto" doctrine? NO I DON'T.

Is it preferable to dislocating shoulders or physical torture, yes it is.

I get really pissed off at the ignorance/innocents of civilians who think that Intel is best acquired with pretty please. Sorry folks, but that's just me.

8 saberry0530  Tue, Nov 20, 2007 11:52:11am

Watched this from an earlier thread and NO WHERE in this propaganda video does he says that he actually WITNESSED the Koran being desecrated. The only evidence is from the terrorists who TOLD him (via the play book) that it was being done.

"Yee: I didn’t see it because I wasn’t a part of the intelligence operation, but I was aware directly from the prisoners,"

Now there is a reliable source.

"But they went farther than that, and they would inappropriately rub their bodies against these prisoners."

They get free lap dances in prison and complain? Another example of how screwed up this belief system is.

James Yee, your fifteen minutes were up long ago.

Now you go prositute yourself to enemies of truth and sanity.

What's in the toilet is not the Koran but your credbility.

20 Sloatsburgh  Tue, Nov 20, 2007 11:57:23am

And nice omission of timeliness and history of events:

seeing as the guards couldn't actually TOUCH the Koran, the were handed to the prisoners with the other items the prisoners needed.

He is best known for being subject to an intense investigation by the United States, but all charges were later dropped.

Yee, a Chinese American, was born in New Jersey and raised in Springfield Township, where he attended Jonathan Dayton High School.[1] Yee graduated from West Point in 1990. Shortly afterward, he converted from Christianity to Islam in 1991, undergoing religious training in Syria and meeting his wife, a Palestinian Arab, with whom he now has two children.[1]

44 Just_A_Grunt  Tue, Nov 20, 2007 12:03:47pm

Let's not forget what an observent Muslim he was.

All charges have been dropped against the Army Muslim chaplain accused of mishandling classified documents at the Navy base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, which houses suspected terrorists, the Army said Friday.
Capt. James Yee will be allowed to return his previous duty station at Fort Lewis, near Tacoma, Washington., said Maj. Gen. Geoffrey D. Miller, commander of Joint Task Force Guantanamo.
The Army charged Yee last September with mishandling classified material, failing to obey an order, making a false official statement, adultery and conduct unbecoming an officer for allegedly downloading pornography on his government laptop.
His lawyer said last week that a proposed settlement was in the works.
Miller said Yee will be offered nonjudicial punishment for allegations of adultery and pornography.

See, if you do it NOW, you get it now. Then you die (eventually or sooner), and since you already had that, you get to be Stan's cabin boy (I had another phrase there, but it self-deleted).

If you wait until you die, then you get it for eternity, AND you don't have to "service" Stan.

This explains why the really pious, devout ones are so intent on murder and dying. Murder because they are sexually oppressed far beyond anything imaginable to your average Westerner, and full of death wishes so they can lift the repression.

This is just plain old propaganda. He's not there to say what he said, or even what he heard, but merely to repeat the same lies over and over again. You could pick damn near any Arab news interview at random and hear more or less the same thing. The purpose is not reporting but the rhythmic repetition of topoi.

The Nazis did this frequently. There was a directive from the Ministry of Propaganda that whenever news stories appeared about unsolved murders, especially of young women, they were to add the tag line "appears to be another case of Jewish ritual murder." Didn't matter what the story was. And there are other similar examples where random crimes were blamed on Jews as a matter of course. In other words, every news story was to be used as an opportunity to repeat certain tag lines of anti-Semitic propaganda. The Arabs are simply following the playbook of their former friends and allies.

You watch enough of these and you have to start whacking yourself on the head to get the steady hum of bullshit out of your ears.

In my opinion there is a bigger issue than this guy ala John Kerry ,reporting as facts things that he did not see.
Why are we giving these guys Korans and visits by Muslim Chaplins?
Did we alloiw German prisoners copies of Mein Kampf and visits bt Nazi propogandists?
It is this damn book and their faux clergy that made them nutty in the first place and helps them to resist.
Oh and if nude females rubbing agaist a guy is torture, I demand to be tortured.

133 Capt_Faust  Tue, Nov 20, 2007 12:24:14pm
One reason is because I am a Muslim, and in this post 9/11 era, in the West, in America, we find this tremendous anti-Muslim hostility and Islamophobia, in which, all Muslims are see as potential terrorists.

I’m a Chinese American. I learned that when I was...
Interviewer: So you are not blond and blue eyed and whatever.
Yee: Yes. I learned that when I was under investigation someone had said of me: “Who the hell does this Chinese Taliban think he is, telling us how to treat our prisoners?” So the fact that I was called a Chinese Taliban is an indication that my ethnicity also played a role

.

This is what happens when you mix Left PC propaganda with radical "I married a Palestinian intifada chick cause I was bored..."
And how many times must I tell you that there is no room for hyphenated Americans...we are ALL Americans if we are legal citizens no matter if your ethnic background is Chinese, Black, Polish, Indian, Albino...whatever!

That third reason was because I was objecting to the crule, inhuman, and degrading treatment of prisoners down in Guantanamo.

Oh Yeah? So being kept there is cruel and degrading? But some of Yee's fellow Muslims who are in that place are actually associated with the vile group of savages who kidnapped two of our soldiers, gouged out their eyes, and chopped them up into little pieces cause they were following the words of Muhammad (pizza be upon him)! Yeah, that's real humain you f**ktard! Or that piece of S**t who sawed off Nick Bergs head with a dull knife? Yeah I guess that is not cruel or inhuman...

Obama wraps up the Kos Kid vote.

"You know, I made some bad decisions that I've actually written about. You know, got into drinking. I experimented with drugs," he said. "There was a whole stretch of time that I didn't really apply myself a lot. It wasn't until I got out of high school and went to college that I started realizing, 'Man, I wasted a lot of time.'"

Obama has written about his drug use in his memoir, "Dreams from My Father."

"Junkie. Pothead. That's where I'd been headed: the final fatal role of the young would be black man," Obama wrote. Mostly he smoked marijuana and drank alcohol, Obama wrote, but occasionally he would snort cocaine when he could afford it.

nude female interrogators rubbing their bodies against the prisoners and touching their genitals . . .

See, the torture was in the fact that the prisoners were not given an adequate supply of dollar bills, thereby causing the 'interrogators' (Capt. Bambi and Lt. Chantae) to not pay attention to the poorer of the incarcerated. It made the broke-ass scrubs from the mountains of Waziristan feel inferior to the better off Saudi death loving terrorists. The mental anguish that these men suffer to this day, is enough to make them want to explode.....

First held on suspicion of being part of an espionage ring, Captain Yee, 35, was in the end charged with the far less serious crime of mishandling classified information. He was also eventually charged with adultery and keeping pornography on his government computer, both violations of military law.

So what's his gripe with "female interrogators even went so far as grabbing the genitals of Muslim male prisoners"?

...Murphy is an American hero. His selfless actions should inspire us all and remind us that real heroes do still exist. Chances are that despite his bravery, most Americans have never heard of Lt. Michael Murphy.

A LexisNexis search reveals that there was a paltry 135 stories reporting Lieutenant Murphy's heroism. Compare that to 4,677 mentions for the supposed Quran abuse at Guantanamo Bay, and 5,159 for the court-martialed Abu Ghraib guard Lynndie England.

Why does the media overlook the valor and heroism of the military that men like Lieutenant Murphy exemplify?

I didn’t see it because I wasn’t a part of the intelligence operation, but I was aware directly from the prisoners, when they came to me with the complaints and concerns.

Ah yes -- you can always trust the word of a Muslim prisoner. There is just no chance that he fabricated that or mischaracterized it. No way.

As for the scene of a female interrogator stripping her clothes off to "torture" the prisoner, sounds a LOT more like a fantasy dream wish of the prisoners, rather than what really happened. I bet they heard about what happened in Abu Ghraib, and then were hoping the same would happen to them (except without the humiliation part).

And let this be example number 213.7, that jihadis have big-time sexual problems. Nothing wrong with having sexual fantasies (what guy doesn't?), but rather that they don't recognize them as fantasies -- they think it's real, want to tell the world about it, and tell everybody how terrible it is. That's messed up.

Maybe only isn't the best choice of words. My point is that there have benn three CMH's awarded during the current conflict. All posthumously. There have been more recomended for the CMH that have been awarded other awards instead of the CMH.

I read an article about the CMH Society where the awardees themselves have lamented the same opinion. One had even asked a number of active duty types and the feed back that he received that was there is a prevailing sentiment that the current conflict is not a real war like WWII.

There is no mandate that the award be given posthumously.

Bottom line, I think that there are more who are deserving and to give them their due would in no way denigrate the award or those who have earned it in prior conflicts.

The MoH is the highest award for heroism under fire. The recommendation for this award or the Navy Cross, Silver Star is very serious. The action in question is investigated to a fare thee well, unlike Terrezza's boy toy 3 Purple Hearts. I don't know exactly how many investigations are done and statements taken but it is a long process and sadly the extraordinary heroism that gets this medal makes it a posthumous award a lot, most of the time.

Oh yes. I was just saying total awarded posthumous compared to men who survived the action. Saw a picture a few years ago of the MoH Society on the Intrepid, don't think there were 75 of them but not sure. In my 20 years in the navy I saw 2 men with the MoH.

If Yee has no more obligations to the Army, he'll use the Kerry in Paris defense. Kerry was actually Naval Reserve when he met our North Vietnamese enemies in some Parisian hotel suite, and he wasn't charged with a damn thing.

251 LSD  Tue, Nov 20, 2007 1:34:43pm

From 2005
CAIR and James Yee’s Dog and Pony Show

The Los Angeles (USA) chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-LA) recently co-sponsored the “James Yee Speaking Tour”.

The tour, a veritable “dog and pony show” reportedly is showcasing how Yee was “targeted” based on his faith and ethnicity.

For those who may not recall, James Yee is the former Army officer who served as Muslim Chaplain to troops and detainees at the Naval Station, Guantanamo, Cuba.

Following his tour at Guantanamo, Yee was arrested on return to the United States when customs inspectors found suspicious documents in his luggage...documents that Yee had no rational reason for possessing.

Yee was charged with stealing classified documents which were found on his return to the United States...and he is defended by CAIR. Just what does this say about CAIR...and what does it say about Yee?

Let’s recap:

Yee, who received a significant amount of his Islamic training in Syria, a rogue, terrorist-supporting nation, was caught at the airport with classified documents in his possession.

However, he stated he did not have any reason to view classified documents, although he did have the security clearance to do so. (This is not entirely truthful, although a member of the military may have the requisite security clearance to read classified material, they must also have a “need to know”. A security clearance does not allow the holder to choose the classified documents they wish to view.)

According to a Courant article, “Yee says he wants the results of the Pentagon's investigation to be released.”I never had anything to do with classified documents, and I want people to know that. This investigation has been very devastating to all of us."”

What does the Army have to say about the Yee affair?

Major General Geoffrey Miller cited “national security concerns that would arise from the release of evidence” as the reason the case was dropped. An Army counterintelligence officer stated that the sensitive information Yee possessed included information on detainees and interrogators, and could have been used to harm U.S. personnel.

The Associated Press reported that when they questioned Defense Department officials about the Yee case, the agency refused to comment on the grounds that it does not discuss ongoing cases.

So, while Yee proclaims his innocence and the Defense Department stays silent about an “ongoing case”, we are left to wonder: is Yee truly “Not Guilty”? Judging by his public statements and the rantings of CAIR, Americans have a reason to wonder...

While I agree, just look at how much NOT prosecuting Kerry could have cost us. I mean, the man was only one or two states away from becoming the Commander-in-Chief. No matter what, Yee should be prosecuted for giving aid and comfort to the enemy, if only to prevent Yee from performing any shenanigans in the future, like becoming another Keith Ellison.

I'm surprised the Army didn't include some sort of confidentiality agreement, once they dropped his mishandling secrets case, with regard to his time at GITMO. I really hope he broke some kind of agreement that will allow his @ss to rot in a real penitentiary.

It's nice to know that the detainees have a rich fantasy life while incarcerated. I mean, seriously, I went to grad school with a whole bunch of young, overindulged muslims from the middle east, mostly Saudi's. I can tell you that virtually all of them spent nearly every evening at one of the local strip clubs. Somehow, even if I could believe our servicewomen were stripping for prisoners, I can't believe these guys would complain about it, or worry about degrading the women... hah. Degrading women seemed to be a way of life for most of the guys I knew.

As for the Koran in the toilet... sounds like someone might have distributed korans and buckets at the same time and did the obvious thing... you know, put the smaller thing in the bigger thing with the handle. The bucket didn't become a "toilet" til after the delivery. Big freakin' deal.

James J. Yee (Chinese: %u4F59%u767E%u5EB7 or %u4F59%u4F18%u7D20%u798F, also known by the Arabic name Yusuf Yee) (born c. 1968) is an American, former United States Army chaplain with the rank of captain. He is best known for being subject to an intense investigation by the United States, but all charges were later dropped.

Yee, a Chinese American, was born in New Jersey and raised in Springfield Township, where he attended Jonathan Dayton High School.[1] Yee graduated from West Point in 1990. Shortly afterward, he converted from Christianity to Islam in 1991, undergoing religious training in Syria and meeting his wife, a Palestinian Arab, with whom he now has two children.

Say no more.

Interesting that one of the charges dropped -- if memory serves -- was storing porno on his US Govt laptop. (Of course, it IS possible he was only storing it to show fellow Muslims just HOW CORRUPT we Americans are, right?)

293 gromster  Tue, Nov 20, 2007 5:26:37pm
Yee: Exactly, but it was them who were driving them towards these suicide attempts by desecrating the Koran.

Spare me. Nobody is going to commit suicide over a Koran being tossed on the floor.

Yee: What was actually going on in these interrogation rooms with these female interrogators was that they were very ready to conduct their interrogation by stripping off their clothes, being nude in front of Muslim prisoners,

I don't believe that for a nano-second.

Most American women (who don't work in strip clubs) are not going to strip for males they don't know, except for the vapid, air-headed, drunk, 20 year olds in the sexist, disgusting "Girls Gone Wild" videos.

Yee: ...The women themselves who are engaging in this type of behavior. But we can take that even a step further, and say this was degrading to all women.

Because what was essentially happening, these women were presenting themselves as simply sex objects and this is not how we should view women in any society.

But you hang or give lashes to female rape victims.

Yee: ... very early on in 2002, and prisoners told me directly that the Korans that they had brought with them were tossed into buckets - buckets which were used as toilets in that makeshift camp.

Interviewer: So... Buckets basically of urine and feces, is that correct?

The Yee guy said the buckets were used as toilets - what else does the interviewer expect to be in there, lollipops and gum drops?

And, btw, I seriously doubt the Koran- in- a- bucket story is true.

When the Army dropped six criminal counts against Yee in March, military officials said they did so to avoid making sensitive information public — not because he was innocent. An Army general stressed that again in April, when he took the unusual step of removing the case from Yee's permanent military record.

Perhaps the case is such that we might need to consider releasing a little sensitive material in order to obtain a prosecution against someone like Yee. I would like to see some or all of the charges reinstated - but that might run into the double jeopardy protection. Of course, there is always the charge of sedition.

It's probably past time that we start charging some of the more egregious examples of these tools under treason or sedition and not settle for anything less than trial - unless they desire to plead guilty.

The sad part is there are enough moonbats who would happily misrepresent themselves to hang a jury for one of these idiots.

Between the comments of idiots like this, and movies like Redacted, our enemies are getting all the encouragement they need. Aiding and abetting our enemies needs to be a crime that is enforced.

Sounds like his own personal fantasy. You know there are guys out there that would pay to for that kind of "interrogation."

A real crime would be committed by they person who took them out of the garbage...

Question - where the hell did the US Army find this little fucker Yee in the first place?
Surely someone doing the 'slumo' chaplain thing at Gitmo, would be security checked de-luxe, and would in fact be part of the military. Not some independant frikken jihadi preacher man.

Yusuf (formerly James) Yee was an American United States Army chaplain assigned to US Naval base Getmo. I realize that treason and sedition no longer applies to the Bushs, the Clintons, Sandy Berger, federal elected pukes, or US media propagandists. When did the commission of these crimes become acceptable for Islamic military officers as they continue to provide aid and comfort to their Islamist brethren? It appears that the UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice) has been rewritten based on Sharia so that it can be both multicultural and PC.

Back when we had a real military run by combat officers instead of focus groups, along with a populace committed to defending the country from all enemies, we hung traitors. Now they are given book and movie deals along with offers to be celebrities on Islamic TV networks.

He is a filthy traitor, not just to America, but humanity.

He should meet the fate of a traitor.

At the very least, he should take up residence in Gitmo.
