Science: Stem Cells Without Embryos

Tue, Nov 20, 2007 at 12:37:49 pm PST

Scientists have done an end run around the ethical problems of stem cell research: Stem cells without embryos: skin cells transformed.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Two separate teams of researchers announced on Tuesday they had transformed ordinary skin cells into batches of cells that look and act like embryonic stem cells — but without using cloning technology and without making embryos.

Their breakthroughs could make possible the long-sought goal of tailor-made medicine, but without the political, scientific and ethical roadblock of using human embryos.

Both teams call the new cells induced pluripotent stem cells and say they look and act like embryonic stem cells — the master cells that give rise to every cell and tissue in the body.

“We can now envisage a time when a simple approach can be used to produce stem cells that are able to form any tissue from a small sample taken from any of us,” Ian Wilmut of the Scottish Centre for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Edinburgh, said in a statement.

This is the best news I've heard in awhile. It's always bugged me how the lefties and the MSM have intentionally used the term "stem cell research" and intentionally confused people about embryonic vs. adult. It the adult cells that have shown promise. That's why the private research dollars have flowed that way, while the taxpayers have been extorted from to pay for embryonic research, which has gone nowhere.

Well, there are still problems to be overcome. New tissue grown this way tends to become cancerous. But they're working on it.

I've never been thrilled with the concept of embryonic stem-cell research. Even without embryos, there's still a Frankenstein's Monster side to this whole thing. Not quite as fateful as splitting the atom, but the technology is just as inevitable now.

Definitely good news, and therapies could hit the marketplace in a few years if they can work out some of the troublesome details (cancer in some instances). Still, the idea that you can harvest skin cells from a person, grow whatever organ or tissue needed, and transplant it back without worrying about tissue rejection is impressive.

32 mad_scientist  Tue, Nov 20, 2007 12:50:25pm
Both teams said the new cells are not ready to use in people yet because they used a type of virus called a retrovirus to carry the new genes into the skin cells.

Easy folks. This is a huge roadblock. If they have to use a retrovirus to induce these genes to be expressed in the fibroblasts to form the pleuropotent (stem cell like) cells, then they are nowhere near testing them in humans.

These viruses could have any variety of adverse effects, and as they even say, genetic mutations, or cancer (well, everything causes cancer accoriding to some, so take that with a grain of salt).

Until they develop another method of insetion of these genes, besides a retrovirus, then I will take a more positive view.....it is a step in the right direction, but there are many more steps needed to obtain anything of therapeutic value....

This is truly ground breaking and exciting - I do hope it holds up and can be replicated. (in news it's the 24 hour rule, in Science it's more like the 2 month rule before you can be assured.)

This will change things forever and will extend our abilities in medical and other fields enormously over the next several years. Being cured by your own cells overcomes so many difficulties.

re: #29 Dirk Diggler

It gets all the hype, but real therapies are being derived from other stem cell techniques. Nothing from the ESCR has resulted in a therapy as yet.

Not only that, but the new technique actually stands to be far cheaper than any other technique because the cells needed to start are so plentiful.

They are already developing technology based on ink jet printers for spraying cells into 3d lattices: virtually instant construction of any organ.

Of course this means that in 2050 medicaid will pay for grafting extra penis's onto prison inmates.

Cloning would be the duplication of existing cells, liver cells making liver cells etc. Stem cells would allow you to grow new cells off a pattern, stem + x = liver, stem + y = kidney. They are are very similar, but distinct fields.

You are not crazy. These cells are supposed to be a blank slate, that can be grown into any type of tissue or cell. But the body is under such a complex system of environemntal pressures, cytokines, hormones, chemokines, pH in, osmotic pressures, proteins, enzymes, all kinds of factors that cause them to go into one developmental pathway way or another.

I, for one, think that simply saying hey, it is a blank cell and we can mold it into whatever we want is WAY understating the complexity of such an endeavor. It proabably can be done, but it isnt going to be an easy venture, that is for damn sure.

I thought about wings - heck, who hasn't? - but the physiology gets pretty tricky. You'd need hollow bones and all sorts of other body-lightening measures, which would make you a pushover in a bar fight.

In a hundred years the human race won't be human any longer.

My wish list (in ascending order of probable difficulty):

1) Muscles for closing my inner ears against loud noises;
2) Nictating membranes for protecting eyes and seeing underwater;
3) Retractable claws

Right now I'd settle for repair of the hair cells in my cochlea so that the ringing in my ears I've lived with for the past 20+ years will cease.

Get that ringing fixed and I might be amenable to some retractable talons.

In a hundred years the human race won't be human any longer.
My wish list (in ascending order of probable difficulty):

1) Muscles for closing my inner ears against loud noises;
2) Nictating membranes for protecting eyes and seeing underwater;
3) Retractable claws

Done! Well, number one is done, anyway. The muscles are called stapedius and tensor tympani, and they're standard equipment for the unmodified human body.

I haven't read the paper, but I doubt that these Scottish stem cells are really pleuripotent enough to allow them to complete replacement of embryonic stem cells. At least, not yet.

A bit ironic that this breakthrough discovery came from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a fortress of moonbat ideology, and it will dissolve one of the left's favorite topics for demonizing pro-life conservative candidates.

That's the irony of lefty-town. People go there to get drunk, party, or particapate in left-wing lovefests. But some parts of the school are excellent, such as the medical and ag research.

Annie Jacobsen has a terrifying story about a man who was mistaken for a terrorist on a flight to NC...

...According to TSA spokesman Christopher White, American Eagle Flight 4518 “sat on the remote area of the runway for about an hour.” According to Wynn, after about forty minutes, the pilot announced the delay was caused by a security issue inside the airport. Wynn telephoned his brother who was waiting for him inside the airport. Wynn’s brother said that according to airport officials, the security issue involved Wynn’s plane. Wynn called his wife. “I told her I didn’t know what was going on, but I was going to help in anyway I could. When I said good-bye, it was one of those tough moments. I thought, this is for real. I wasn’t sure what was going to happen to any of us on that plane.”

What follows is Jerry Wynn’s exclusive, first person account of what happened next Raleigh-Durham Airport:

“All of a sudden, boom! There were spotlights all around the plane! FBI, SWAT, teams of men with their rifles pointed at the plane. We were surrounded. I thought, this is it. A little girl behind me screamed. I thought, it’s the guy in the mask! If he makes a move, what do I do? Do I grab him? As I was thinking this, the door of the plane opens up. One guy, I think he was an FBI agent, came on board and said, ‘we have a security issue. Come out one at a time.’ This little girl was crying and I could see behind me, the mother was trying to calm her daughter down. As I made my way down the aisle and turned left out the door of the plane, I thought, Thank God I’m alive. Suddenly, all the guns were on me! It was surreal. They were all shouting at me, screaming, ‘Move and we’ll blow you fu——- head off!” I thought, Oh, my God, they think it’s me!

Disappearance of Bishop Tutu

By Simon Deng
Friday November 16, 2007

Late last month, I went to hear Bishop Desmond Tutu speak at Boston’s Old South Church at a conference on “Israel Apartheid.” Tutu is a well respected man of God. He brought reconciliation between blacks and whites in South Africa. That he would lead a conference that damns the Jewish state is very disturbing to me.

The State of Israel is not an apartheid state. I know because I write this from Jerusalem where I have seen Arab mothers peacefully strolling with their families – even though I also drove on Israeli roads protected by walls and fences from Arab bullets and stones. I know Arabs go to Israeli schools, and get the best medical care in the world. I know they vote and have elected representatives to the Israeli Parliament. I see street signs in Arabic, an official language here. None of this was true for blacks under Apartheid in Tutu’s South Africa.

I also know countries that do deserve the apartheid label: My country, Sudan, is on the top of the list, but so are Iran, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. What has happened to my people in Sudan is a thousand times worse than Apartheid in South Africa. And no matter how the Palestinians suffer, they suffer nothing compared to my people. Nothing. And most of the suffering is the fault of their leaders. Bishop Tutu, I see black Jews walking down the street here in Jerusalem. Black like us, free and proud.

Tutu said Israeli checkpoints are a nightmare. But checkpoints are there because Palestinians are sent into Israel to blow up and kill innocent women and children. Tutu wants checkpoints removed. Do you not have doors in your home, Bishop? Does that make your house an apartheid house? If someone, Heaven forbid, tried to enter with a bomb, we would want you to have security people “humiliating” your guests with searches, and we would not call you racist for doing so. We all go through checkpoints at every airport. Are the airlines being racist? No.

Yes, the Palestinians are inconvenienced at checkpoints. But why, Bishop Tutu, do you care more about that inconvenience than about Jewish lives?

Bishop, when you used to dance for Mandela’s freedom, we Africans – all over Africa – joined in. Our support was key in your freedom. But when children in Burundi and Kinshasa, all the way to Liberia and Sierra Leone, and in particular in Sudan, cried and called for rescue, you heard but chose to be silent.

Today, black children are enslaved in Sudan, the last place in the continent of Africa where humans are owned by other humans – I was part of the movement to stop slavery in Mauritania, which just now abolished the practice. But you were not with us, Bishop Tutu.

So where is Desmond Tutu when my people call out for freedom? Slaughter and genocide and slavery are lashing Africans right now. Where are you for Sudan, Bishop Tutu? You are busy attacking the Jewish state. Why?

Simon Deng, a native of the Shiluk Kingdom in southern Sudan, is an escaped jihad slave and a leading human rights activist

First there was Bok, now there is Deng.

Voices are starting to be heard.

By us at least.

Meanwhile, BotW gives us more cause to question dramatic announcements of scientific discoveries, especially when those emanate from the UN.

"The Scientists Speak," reads the headline of the New York Times editorial, which informs us that there is no question the New York Times editorialists are right:
The world's scientists have done their job. Now it's time for world leaders, starting with President Bush, to do theirs. That is the urgent message at the core of the latest--and the most powerful--report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a group of 2,500 scientists who collectively constitute the world's most authoritative voice on global warming.

Released in Spain over the weekend, the report leaves no doubt that man-made emissions from the burning of fossil fuels (and, to a lesser extent, deforestation) have been responsible for the steady rise in atmospheric temperatures.

There is no doubt! These are scientists, after all, and they're working for the U.N. They don't make mistakes!

Or do they? Here's a news story that also appears in the Times today:

The United Nations' AIDS-fighting agency plans to issue a report today acknowledging that it overestimated the size of the epidemic and that new infections with the deadly virus have been dropping each year since they peaked in the late 1990s.

We're so confused. Didn't the scientists speak? How could they have gotten it so wrong? After all, they're scientists!

Here's a quote from the Washington Post that may shed some light on the matter:

"There was a tendency toward alarmism, and that fit perhaps a certain fundraising agenda," said Helen Epstein, author of "The Invisible Cure: Africa, the West, and the Fight Against AIDS." "I hope these new numbers will help refocus the response in a more pragmatic way."

Could it be that we are watching the same phenomenon with the whole global-warmist hysteria? Our bet would be yes.

I'm guessing the book was better than the movie. It was awkward and forgettable. I tacked that on without thinking.

When I think about it, the researchers working on this know far better than I do what are the implications of growing human tissue beyond what can be found in old sci-fi movies like Dr. X. But even if they have misgivings about potential abuses in the future, they know the technology will move forward with them or without them. All scientists have an integral trust in themselves to present innovation to history, come what may of it.

Give creative minds an idea and a roadblock and they will come up with - a solution! Thus has it always been and will continue to be, which is why taking time for purposeful consideration is the correct thing to do, especially when there are truly profound ethical considerations. I sure hope I live long enough to see some of the wonder that will come of this.

275 EE  Tue, Nov 20, 2007 3:35:44pm

This technology should be strongly supported, because it makes the embrionic stem cell approach not necessary, and thereby avoids the divisions of society that had resulted from it (and also avoids the ethical issues that produced the divisions).

There should be a unified effort in favor of supporting this technology strongly, from both sides of the embrionic stem cell issue, because even if one does not see any ethical issue at all involved in this, there is the pragmatic matter of avoiding splits in society. The conservative side should of course strongly support it, on ethical grounds at least, but the liberal side should support it on pragmatic grounds.

I may be wrong, but I never thought this issue was anything other than a club by the left to serve as a wedge issue. Think about it: What other medical research has become a 'cause' for the left? Breakthroughs in insulin therapy? or new trends in Radiology? When's the last time anyone heard a campaign speech about the latest developments in arthritis treatment?

I may be a cynic, but I believe the only reason the left latched onto this as a campaign issue was to drive a wedge in society, and to damage the pro-life movement. You watch - if stem cell therapy is shown to be able to bypass the need for embryos, the left will forget all about Parkinson's patients campaigning for Democrats.

This is definitely good news. However, as was said earlier, this won't be bearing any fruit for a long time. But, for your information, we have been helping heart patients (mostly Americans) in Thailand for the last three years with good success using adult stem cells (the patient's own). These patients didn't have time for a debate, they didn't have time to wait for scientists to figure out how to stop the cancerous growth and tumors associated with embryonic stem cells. Adult stem cells have been doing wonders for many years and will continue to do so. The MSM is deliberately trying to cover up success stories like those of our patients in order to promote their embryonic stem cells "potential" that we all hear about, but never see in actuality.

Embryonic stem cells are like Kwame Brown of the Lakers. On one play, he will look like the former #1 pick in the draft, dominating with his big strong body, posting up his man, and putting in a nice shot for two points, but for the next 15 minutes after that, he will make turnovers, not play defense, and just disappear.

When I think of embryonic stem cells, I think of the number zero. How many clinical trials are there now involving embryonic stem cells? Zero. How many treatments use embryonic stem cells? Zero. How many people have ever been helped by ESCs? ZERO.

Embryonic stem cells = Kwame Brown ie. 0

re: #280 buzzsawmonkey
Upthread we are discussing Wi-Fi. The best analogy I can think of to buttress my argument is the asbestos industry. For many years they denied that asbestos fibers had anything to do with the health issues of the industry workers. There was strong correlation, but no proof of causation. It took 20 plus years, iirc, only after a sliver of the epicenter of a tumor was examined under an electron microscope, and the asbestos fiber matched perfectly to a fiber produced, that the industry finally had to admit liability.
I do not believe in 'junk science' like the global warming prostitutes. But I do follow science. When I see strong correlation, I want to know more. I advice caution, even saving a few pennies and keeping some money away from the oil ticks, by turning off equipment when it is not necessary.
If you follow the events of the world, as I'm sure you do, you have to admit that there is some inexplicable insanity running rampant right now. Hopefully, science will figure it out before it is too late. But I'm hardly a tin foil hat type of guy, nor are you, so the best I can offer is to agree to disagree, that there MAY be some causation involved in the correlation.
The criteria for acceptable exposure levels is usually based on animal studies. Half of the level that had some minor, discernible effect on an animal is usually considered an acceptable level for humans. But this is still all very new technology. An experiment on mankind on a global scale. I think caution and minimizing exposure when easily achieved is prudent for parents with young children.
Sorry if this is rambling.

286 drewas  Tue, Nov 20, 2007 4:33:07pm

Great news for science, for sure! But, this will not end the controversy. The embryonic stem cell advocates will find a fly in this ointment and will insist that embryonic cells are the only answer. Why? Research dollars from the federal largess. Additionally, using embryos for medical research (even when there is little indication of success) puts a happy face on abortion. Who can object to abortion on demand when the aborted embryos are being used to cure spinal injuries and Parkinson's Disease!?

The workers in the asbestos industry, in the face of anecdotal evidence and strong correlation, still had the option to leave that workplace. When we subject others, including infants that have no choice in the matter, to microwave radiation without a history of hundreds of years of evidence of safety, it falls into (to me) the same category of those that predict global warming gloom and doom based on less than a hundred years of accurate science based documentation. I'm not panicked, nor should most people, but following the correlation studies seems prudent to me.

I am more concerned with carbon nano-fibers than RF exposure. Carbon nano-fibers will be much more toxic than the worst exposure to asbestos just because of the size of the fibers.

I don't know. I bet a lot of stem cell supporters will still insist on using human embryo cells.

I fully expect them to come up with arguments in the near future about how human embryo stem cells are vastly superior to these new types of cells.

Also, the guys who use human embryo stem cells in research make a lot of money off it, from what I've read. They aren't going to want to give up that money.

In addition, we're living in a culture of death.

Human life isn't valued anymore, and I sincerely believe that some (notice I said some not "all" or even a "majority of") abortion supporters like the idea of dead babies. Seriously. I think they enjoy it.

In Europe in particular, some of them seem to get a thrill out of doing things like physician-assisted suicide.

Doctors in some European nations even advise (encourage, really) people with depression to commit suicide.

There's this creepy acceptance these days of killing humans for convenience (i.e., 'it's costing too much to keep grandpa on the machines,' 'I don't want to be pregnant right now it will interfere with my career,' etc.), or arrogantly declaring that certain types of people are not really "human" (e.g., brain damage victims).

Some people today think that other people are disposable, and I find it very disturbing.

308 HBob  Wed, Nov 21, 2007 7:12:13am

I don't see a breakthrough in anything other than the news media and a few scientists finally admitting ( in a half *ssed way ) that embryo stem cell treatments don't work. They'll give you a nice batch of tumors - if that's what you're looking for, you're in luck. The adult stem cells are the only ones that have ever successfully treated anything.

311 Amos (Zionist Minion)  Wed, Nov 21, 2007 11:58:49am

Seems this field is more developed than in the States.

My father underwent a stem cell treatment in his heart, with stem cells derived from his own blood. He had to go to Thailand for this, apparently because they have the most experience with this kind of thing. After he was hospitalized there, his blood was flown back to Israel for the stem cells to be produced from it, then flown back to Thailand. This field is new. Only some 200 people underwent this procedure, many of whom are from the US, it seems. He was the only Israeli there, while there were several Americans.

If anyone wants more information about this, write to me and I'll try to help as much as I can.
