Samantha Power Quits Obama Campaign

Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 9:34:50 am PST

Barack Obama’s unstable anti-Israel foreign policy adviser Samantha Power has resigned from the Obama campaign, after calling Hillary Clinton “a monster.”

I suspect the resignation was “suggested.”

WASHINGTON—Samantha Power resigned as a foreign policy advisor to Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) after she called Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) a “monster” in an interview with The Scotsman newspaper.

Power was in London for a book tour and to headline fundraisers for Obama. Power was an ardent and passionate supporter of Obama who took almost a year off from her job as a professor at Harvard University to work in Obama’s Senate office. She has been deeply involved in policy, youth outreach—she is a popular campus speaker—and fund-raising for Obama. She was due in Chicago on March 16 to headline a fund-raising event for Obama.

I guess Obama didn't want to get his VP candidate upset.
Or are Obama and Clinton still fighting over who gets to be on top?
Either way, the country gets screwed.

Israeli Warplanes Fly Over Beirut

BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) — Israeli warplanes flew over Beirut on Friday, the Lebanese army said, a day after a Palestinian gunman killed eight Jewish seminary students in Jerusalem.

"Two enemy Israeli warplanes" flew over the southern city of Tyre, Beirut and the port town of Jounieh, north of the capital, before heading back to the "occupied territories," the army said in a statement. The Israeli army said it knew of no activity in Beirut.

33 looking closely  Fri, Mar 7, 2008 9:43:25am

The "scandal" here isn't that Powers hates Israel.

It isn't that she hates Hilary Clinton, or thinks she is a "monster" (or that the Obama campaign does).

The scandal is that Obama has let this nutjob anywhere near the position of shaping American foreign policy.

The greener the politician (and in this case Obama is figuratively not even out of his diapers yet, not having even completed ONE term in the senate, with most of THAT running for office), the more senior his advisors need to be.

45 StinkHammer  Fri, Mar 7, 2008 9:47:12am

Slightly OT (and it's probably already been discussed on an earlier thread somewhere), but I also found Jack Kelly's smackdown of Obama's "weapons shortage" claim quite delicious.

46 z9z99  Fri, Mar 7, 2008 9:47:15am

Some questions for Senator Obama before the next debate:

1.) What would be the expected outcome if corruption in the Oil for Food program had been allowed to continue unimpeded?

2.) How would you weight the fact of Saddam's past possession and use of poison gas in considering intelligence data that he had rebuilt his stockpiles of such weapons?

3.) Being that car bombing was pioneered by the nominally Catholic Irish Republican Army and freely shared with terrorists of different stripes from around the world, how would you defend the assertion that Saddam would never pursue common interests with Al Qaeda as a matter of scruples?

4.) If you have such faith in your ability to talk murderous leaders who target innocent civilians into peaceful co-existence, why haven't you tried this tactic with the leaders of murderous street gangs in our major cities? It will work, right?

5.) You have derided John McCain's comment that he would stay in Iraq for 100 years if necessary. Assuming we had taken your advice and not invaded Iraq, how long would you be prepared to enforce the no-fly zones, that were put in place to protect disadvantaged populations from Saddam's intemperate leadership style?

6.) Mahmoud Ahmadinejad recently wept at a Shiite shrine in Iraq, a visit that would not have been possible without the intervention of the United States military. Did this American accomplishment give your wife something to be proud of?

7.) In your speech the other night you cited several anecdotes about how your campaign affected this person or that. Given that you seem comfortable with policy by anecdote, do stories of Saddam's thugs torturing two year old children in front of their parents, or stuffing people into plastic shredders, or the photos of a dead mother embracing a dead child in Halabja have any affect on your war policy, or are these anecdotes too much of a downer to be considered in policy decisions?

8.) You are very consistent in your calls for "Hope" and "Change." May we assume that your policy toward Iran will be to hope that they don't acquire nuclear weapons and then hope they change their ways if they do?

8.) If you are such a fan of change, did you support efforts to change: Social Security, the regime in Iraq, the genocide in Darfur, the Gorelick wall that prevented law enforcement and intelligence agencies from sharing information, the Taliban government in Afghanistan, the number of ground forces in Iraq before the "surge?" Change is good, right?

9.) How many extra-judicial killings occurred in Iraq between 1991 and 2003? Do you care?

51 Abu Maven  Fri, Mar 7, 2008 9:48:21am

Somewhat OT:

I was the source of the "Obama's grandma denies she is a Muslim" story yesterday. Too busy at work to comment on the thread, but noticed that some lizards seemed to think the story was not newsworthy. I think that misses the larger context of the story, namely grandma was attacking the media for lying about Obama being a Muslim. It is the height of hypocrisy for her to dissemble about her own Islamic beliefs while attacking the media for its purported "lies" about Obama.

This raises three possibilities:

(1) she acted on her own, thinking it would help distance Obama from Islam;

(2) she acted at the behest of the Obama campaign ("Sweet old Granny, tell them to stop lying about Obama and his Islamic background."); or

(3) the AP was doing its own taqiyya for Obama and Granny herself never indicated she was a Christian.

In any case, an explanation is warranted.

Here's my take on it:

The Obama campaign realized that her looney-tunes foreign policy statements were going to be a major liability in the general election. So they decided she had to go. But then they thought -- well, since she's going anyway, why not use her to take an underhanded jab at Hillary that we couldn't get away with under normal circumstances? So they informed Powers that she was canned, but that her final assignment was to call Hillary a "monster," would would both create a lasting image and also provide cover as an excuse for her firing, which they didn't want to admit was because of pressure from people like us.

Okay. What's the big deal? She says that Hillary is a monster, which really isn't the worst thing in the world you could say about Hillary.

I can think of a few worse things. Liar comes to mind. So does the fact that Hillary (and Bill) are trying to hide information that might hurt them from public scrutiny until well after the election (at the earliest).

Where's the journalists to demand releases of Hillary's tax records, demand access to the pardon files, etc., from Hillary? Hsunami anyone?

Meet Sada Cumber
Bush's appointment to the Organization of the Islamic Conference.
by Stephen Schwartz

Having selected an Ismaili for the post, President Bush proved to be astute and adroit. Because Ismailis have suffered discrimination at the hands of Sunnis, and especially Islamist bigots, to draw America's observer at the OIC from their ranks represents a substantial challenge to the radicalism and conformism imposed on global Islam. It affirms the rights of Muslim minorities including Sufis, or spiritual Muslims, as well as Shias, just as America has advocated for the freedom of non-Muslims in Islamic lands. Ismailis have been brutally mistreated in the Saudi kingdom, where they are few but, as elsewhere, well-educated and vocal in demanding respect...

In sending an American Muslim to the OIC who stands for independence in Muslim theology, entrepreneurship as well as social responsibility in the use of Muslim wealth, and a strong pro-Western attitude, Bush has brought another small but positive change to relations between the West and the Islamic world. Throughout history, and especially in crisis zones, minor developments have had great consequences. Perhaps the appointment of a U.S. representative to the OIC in the person of Sada Cumber will prove to be another such decisive and meaningful action.

Interesting theory.

Indeed it is curious that someone senior would get fired from a campaign for saying Hillary is a "monster". It does seem more like an excuse for her firing than the actual reason, though that doesn't necessarily mean she was specifically asked to make that remark.

In any case, now Obama has a hole in his lineup and he's going to have to replace it. Who's next?

Calling Hillary a Monster ‘Offensive,’ Monsters Say

Prominent Miscreants Outraged Over Remark

An Obama campaign aide’s remarks in which she called Sen. Hillary
Clinton (D-NY) a “monster” have ignited a firestorm of controversy
among monsters across the U.S., prominent monsters confirmed today.

Calling Hillary Clinton a monster is “odious and offensive to
monsters everywhere,” said Tracy Klujian, the executive director of the
Monster Anti-Defamation League, a group that monitors unflattering
portrayals of monsters and miscreants in the media.

“As monsters, we are subject to defamation and stereotyping on a
daily basis,” Mr. Klujian said. “But being lumped together with
Hillary Clinton is really a low blow.”

Mr. Klujian said that he was pleased that the Obama aide had resigned
over the “monster” remark, but said that more “more work will need
to be done” if the Illinois senator is to mend fences with the
monster community.

“We monsters count for as much as five percent of the vote in
Pennsylvania,” Mr. Klujian said. “And that number is even higher in
Pittsburgh.”

Perhaps in an effort to steer clear of the controversy, Sen. Clinton
herself dodged the issue of whether or not Sen. Obama is a monster in an
upcoming interview on “Sixty Minutes.”

“He’s not a monster as far as I know,” she told Steve Kroft in an
interview to air this Sunday. “I mean, I take him on the basis of
what he says, and, you know, if he says he’s not a monster, there
isn’t any reason to doubt that.”

Elsewhere, Rep. Ron Paul said that he is dropping out of the G.O.P.
race, but would continue to run for president of Earth II.

I've come to the decision that although I'm following the upcoming election and its outcome closely, it doesn't really matter who wins anymore. McCain/Clinton/Obama, none of them are going to get in my way. I will continue to circumvent whatever crap they toss at me, my business, my life, period.

With that said, an Obama presidency with the likes of Samantha Power involved in that administration guiding foreign policy would be rather entertaining. Pure fodder for the funny bone. Given the current state of our international affairs and what will soon follow no matter which one of these three is elected, you just have to laugh to get through it and take care of what you can actually control.

Do you vote?

Never missed a vote since I was eligible to do so, almost 30 years now, no matter how small or insignificant the election, primary or otherwise, no matter how trivial the choices and items presented in the overall ballot seemed to be. I will vote again in November, fully expecting that my Presidential vote in particular will have little impact and change the course of the current disaster I now see in our federal government and one that I believe will only get worse, no matter which one of these three wins the election.

Besides, I've probably got somewhere between 25-35 years left before I'm worm food anyway. As E. Costello said, "I used to be disgusted, but now I'm just amused..."

One more thing, if she is telling the truth, then she just set herself up to be prosecuted.

Save this one for when they have their little gathering in DC. If it's true she'll testify to anything, then she basically copped to serious crimes in this piece.

Jen, who does not want her last name used for fear of legal action, is nervously contemplating the day a few years back when, as a guard for a U.S. enemy prisoner of war in Iraq, she purposely poisoned two detainees.

"It didn't truly dawn on me until pretty recently that those guys probably died and it's my fault," says Jen, who moved to St. Paul from Racine, Wisconsin, in January.

The Israeli army said it knew of no activity in Beirut.

yeah im sure the army said quote back to the occupied territories.

why dosent the AP just come out and say, the nazi jews flew their civilian killing american death machines over the peaceful kite flying nation of lebanon before seeing that there was no activities being perpetrated by the pro civil rights group Hez bo la before returning to the zionazi imperial occupied death machine base.

Hard to overestimate how big a deal this is for the Obama campaign. Ms. Power is not just some precinct captain in Podunk County who shot her mouth off on local TV. This woman was first in line to be at least National Security Adviser in an Obama WH.

She is Obama's Condi Rice, the supposed brainpower behind the entire Obama foreign policy shop.

This is going to leave a mark, and there's no way Obama can bring her back into the fold unless he wins the WH.

From what I have read about what her foreign policy priorities are for this country, I say "good riddance."

Magnesium is highly flammable. Flaming ribbons of it used to be used by tour guides to provide light in caverns.

If a cigarette was spiked with magnesium, it would probably go up in a whoosh, sort of like a stronger version of those loads to make exploding cigars and cigarettes that they used to sell in joke shops (are there even joke shops anymore?).

The idea that the magnesium would just lie there passively waiting to be ingested in the cigarette smoke--and that it would do so long enough to poison someone--is utterly absurd.

no kidding, the thing would explode instantly and leave the person with a blackend face of soot.

Yes, my exact thinking, though I never got around to saying it.

The poison cigarette:

salt -- non-toxic
iron -- an essential nutrient mineral, unless ingested in massive quantities over several years.
magnesium -- would cause the cigarette to explode.

Plus -- wouldn't someone, uh, notice if their cigarette was filled with chemicals?

And how exactly do you "splice" magnesium into a cigarette?

Of course, this falls short in Hollywood, where many of the women do their best despite Moonbattiness. Maybe Hollywood doesn't really count. I think that most of the time Hollywood types don't take even half a minute to think about who they are/what they believe and so become Leftists by default. Do not mistake political rivalry for personal hatred. The sniping between the Hillary and Obama camps is fierce, because they both want the same job--but their agendas are very similar.

I've been predicting the HO Ticket for months now, as some will remember; I have, in fact, suggested that Obama's entire run was done entirely for the purpose of building up his almost nonexistent credentials to make him look "Presidential" enough to be on the ticket, and that his purpose was to provide Hillary with coverage on her left flank, and charisma sufficient to overcome her famous negatives, without her having to rely on Bill--not to mention that in Identity Politics World, having a "First Woman/First Black" ticket is golden.

It looked for a while as if the Obam' Phenom' was running away from its creators. But I am more convinced than ever that the entire Democratic contest is merely a show for the rubes, and that the HO Ticket has been fixed since the start of this campaign.

I agree 100% with every word of your comment.

That Obama enlisted Power is NOT an illustration of an exusable lack of experience. It shows where he really stands on the issues. "More senior advisers" won't fix that.

What scares me most about Obamamania is how many Republicans or conservatives are giving him the benefit of the doubt, approach him as a regular candidate, as a nice young man who speaks well.

If the Reps are going to base their Presidential campaign on experience vs inexperience they're going to lose.

Being the conspiracy theorist that I can be....This seems like such a set up. Look how WONDERFUL Obama is to fire someone for calling Hillary names. Now if Hillary tries to get nasty....she will look like the bad guy and Obama will once again be the Messiah. Hmmmm?

re: #245 buzzsawmonkey

The Dems convo comes first.

I think it's better that way, actually. McCain can scope out what they're done, devise a response, and then get a later "convention bounce."

McCain and the Repubs will be smeared with the race card no matter what happens. One just has to move forward. I think the race card method will seriously backfire. I'm hearing from moonbat friends every day now, "If I get accused of being a racist if I don't support Obama one more time, I'm gonna scream!" And that's moonbats talking. Imagine what the average American will feel.

Sure she was a loose cannon, and sure she is an anti-Semite, but she did have certain attributes that are rarely found in among foreign policy wonks:

I'm thinking maybe Hillary came up w/the "suggestion" and Obama may have taken it, which he would, if he wants to be her VP.

Do not mistake political rivalry for personal hatred."

Yeah. I'm not mistaking it, which is why I said what I said, which would appear to be the same thing you've said.

This pains me to write but, in the last week, I polled my, what I'd call mainstream, Zionist friends, people who have kids living is Israel or those who send their kids to day school, and more than a few of them were lining up for Obama.

Not Obama over Hillary, but getting ready to ACCEPT Obama should it have come to that. They said to me, "Well I asked [Jewish] folks in Chicago and they said he was fine," or, "Obama's views on Israel's security are very mainstream and reassuring."

Is it me? What is it with the people, what passes for reasoning? I JUST DON'T GET IT.

Oy.

May G-d bless the memory of those murdered boys.

Iron can be toxic in a large enough dose, though I'm not sure about magnesium, but I don't see how she could manage to poison people with a dose that would be contained in a cigarette.

I'd simply ask her what her MOS and unit were, and whether anyone else could back her up.

I used to load cigarettes with ground-up matchheads to get that exploding effect. Magnesium sounds like it would work much better.

Ahhhh, there's a thousand more where she came from.
She'll be back to serve in the cabinet.
After all Hillary still has sandy Burger, and he'll have his top secret pass back by then.
One happy family.

And let us not forget that Zbigniew Brezinski is an adviser to Obama and how far behind can James Baker and Brent Scowcroft be?

BTW, if the Republican convention is before the Democrats', McCain would be smart to choose Michael Steele as a running mate in order to pre-empt the almost-certain kiss-and-make-up love fest between Hillary and Obama which will herald the forming of the HO Ticket.

If the Republican convention is after the Democrats', then McCain is screwed; if he chooses Steele or some other black person, he will be accused of being a copycat and engaging in blatant pandering, regardless of his running-mate's qualifications and background, and if he does not choose a person of color the race card will be played even more than it is currently being.

I mostly agree, but a funny thing happened along the way: The Obamessiah train started to run away. The brakes were applied in Texas and Ohio, but the train will arrive in Denver with Barry ahead in delegates. My question is, should a deal be made with Obama #2 on the ticket, will that be enough to appease his supporters? Or will they be enraged that once again, the black man is being shoved to the back of the bus?

Is this Samantha the same person who said, while responding to Hillary's "3am phone call add", that neither Barack or Hillary are experienced enough to take that call?

I hope it's not, it would be a shame to waste such a great gaffe like that on someone already walking out the door.

264 UrbanRevival  Fri, Mar 7, 2008 1:14:46pm

How convenient. The blogosphere is going crazy reporting on her anti-Semitism and suddenly, accidentally ....she just happens to get "caught" in an off the record remark that gets her canned. Hmmm.......how utterly convenient.

Did Jesus ever suggest than any of his disciples resign? Obama is a false messiah, and the resignation of one of his apostles only means that he wants power (not Samantha but raw power) at any cost. Most un-Messiah-like.

Obama will be reduced to what he is in the public perception before the general election. He is a man who wants power desperately, and that's about all he is.
