Washington Post Writer Makes Up Brit Hume Quote

Thu, Mar 20, 2008 at 9:11:27 am PDT

On today’s Washington Post Corrections page:

The Courtland Milloy column in the March 19 Metro section incorrectly said that Fox News anchor Brit Hume referred to Barack Obama’s speech on race as “blaming whites.” Hume did not say or imply that.

(Hat tip: Patrick Poole.)

Here’s the article in question, an adulatory piece about Barack Obama in which Courtland Milloy simply makes up a quote and attributes it to Brit Hume, then goes on to equate Hume with Pat Buchanan: Invited to Wrestle in a Racial Mud Pit, Obama Soars Above It.

Of course, some still could not handle the truth. Brit Hume of Fox News, for instance, thought Obama was “blaming whites” — even though Obama specifically called on African Americans to take responsibility for their lives.

That was enough to make me want to wallow in the muck again. But Obama had made a point that was bigger than Hume or Buchanan or even himself.

Very sleazy writing. It seems that falsely attributing quotes to public people is now semi-acceptable behavior at the Washington Post—cause for a correction on page 18 but nothing more.

I have something of a mixed hatred and envy of journalists:

They can lie, distort, confabulate and deceive on a grand scale with vast world-historic consequences, yet, they never seem to suffer any consequences, let alone, feel guilt.

It is almost a superhuman power.

Back in college, I remember when a couple of my uber-liberal friends discovered Kierkegaard's Fear and Trembling and touted the phrase, "teleological suspension of the ethical," meaning in essence that "the ends justify the means." This is directly adjacent to the "Big Lie" in liberal dogma (cf. Jonah Goldberg, Liberal Fascism). The practical application of this is evident in this WaPo article, as a lie is touted as truth, although in the author's mind, she would only be 'amplifying' Hume's 'latent racism.' To her, anything that doesn't jive with the liberal views of race and victimology all espouse a deeper pathology in need of exposure at whatever cost. It was incredible how these same people could denounce the supposed racism of conservatives then jest about the stupidity inherent in southern accents. Whenever I felt up to arguing with them, they would fold under the contradiction pointed out by a fellow liberal (me at the time) and argue that our disagreement was rooted in semantics; that we essentially agreed the same thing, except disagreed how to express is - which was both an expression of our shared morality (Judeo-Christian, which I later came to acknowledge and accept) and the inherent moral relativism of liberal arguments. These people know full well what they are doing. Acknowledging that you are a Republican to some of these people is enough for them to consider you a pariah.

Barak Obama does the same thing -- he makes up stories about Lou Dobbs' position with respect to illegal immigration -- the only difference is that Obama will never, ever issue any form of apology. These are shameless people -- people who can not and will not express guilt, remorse, shame -- perhaps because they can never admit to any wrong -- in their own eyes they are flawless -- thus, it's always someone else's fault. There is zero taking of any personal responsibility.

Last night on CNN's Anderson Cooper, Obama (with expressionless, dead eyes) stated that if he lost the Democratic nomination it'd be because Amerika was not ready for a black man to run for office. In other words, any failure on his part will be due solely to the white honkies or racist Amerika...with him playing the role of "victim."

Courtland Milloy is the Washington Post's resident `Hate Whitey' token black liberal columnist.

They have a rotation of three. Colbert King, Eugene Robinson and Courtland. Of course, they have no place for a black conservative voice, since minority conservatives like Michelle Malkin are viewed as `race traitors.'

The Washington Post is the definition of Eastern liberal white guilt, especially towards its majority black city. Every day, the Post comes out with some pandering article towards blacks. ``Being a Black Man'' was hustled out after the New York Times did ``How Race Is Lived In America''

The articles are all the same. Liberal white guilt and redemption. Which is why so many white media types are backing Obama. Racial redemption on the cheap.

A Lizard. I got the quote from one of threads many, many months ago. I rotate the first quote, but that one is never removed from my signature.

Sheesh, what a bunch of immature idiots.

As an actual immature idiot, I take offense to being lumped in with MSM types !

Charles, it might also be worth mentioning that the BBC is spreading the lie that Obama voted against the invasion as a Senator in 2002 magically even though he wasn't sworn in until 2005. Unless I'm grossly mistaken.

Geez..facts facts and facts...is that so important ?

Brit Hume is a class act.

I doubt Juan Williams would be a regular on his show if he were the monster many on the Left make him out to be.

He wasn't making anything up, he was simply restating the way the facts presented themselves to him as any good Minister of Truthers should...

OMG, what a beautiful piece of music Barber's Adagio for Strings is. I haven't heard that for quite a while.

Hey, at least Courtland didn't put a (R) next to Brit Hume's name.

Who the hell names their kid Courtland?

Well, I am white. But I've also recently adopted the White Value System so I think Obama would be OK with that.

OT, I've got so may great stories of lib hypocrisy from college (recent grad).

I was talking to my stat professor after the end of a semester and the discussion veered into politics, namely ME and Bush. I expected him to be a full on, bleeding heart liberal, and wasn't disappointed when he said, "Iranians should be able to have nuclear power if they wish," and I hesitated for a second and said, "Yea...but...they're really not nice people," expecting to be excoriated, although he was taken aback that someone disagreed with him and at least acknowledged the hateful stuff dinner jacket says.

I use a schnops glass

The glass is not half full. The glass is not half empty. Any engineer worth his salt will tell you that the glass is twice the needed size.

And Krep. That SB2 gravel has washed out in quantities that guarantee motorized help is needed. Shovel and wheelbarrow just won't cut it.

113 Tumulus11  Thu, Mar 20, 2008 9:57:53am

. The last line in the article is the most telling.

'And even if Obama doesn't make it all the way to the White House, I sure like where he's taken me so far.'

. Preparing the Obama faithful for the impending catastrophe.

Long ago, a young Barack Obama met, and threw his lot in with, a vicious racist named Jeremiah A. Wright and it was all part of G_d's plan.

"Iranians should be able to have nuclear power if they wish"

...and ordinary folks should be able to walk through Manhattan with uranium suitcases if they feel like it

I am saddened to report that some of that movie was filmed on my very street. I got nothing from it but inconvenience, of course.

It's simple; these are the same tactics Liberals use in daily conversation. As journalistic standards are lowered to reflect the biases of the journalists they will less see the distinction between personal and professional mode of expression.

Expect more of the same ... and worse.

118 Ward Cleaver  Thu, Mar 20, 2008 10:07:42am

What do you expect from the "journalist" Milloy?

this guy defended Michael Vick's dog fighting ring and chastised Mayor Fenty for electing a white city counselor and an Asian school chancellor.

He is a race baiter of the lowest kind and no wonder his name appears only in the metro section.

129 opinionated  Thu, Mar 20, 2008 11:01:05am

As low down as the Washington Post is, as one would imagine that there could not be a lower level in the gutter, there is always the New York Times to prove that the Times can reach deeper.

Catch this headline:

McCain Visits Israeli Town That Rockets Often Strike

[Link: www.nytimes.com...]

Those rockets must be like meteors, just randomly falling. Or maybe the rockets are anti Semitic and fire on their own.

130 reine.de.tout  Thu, Mar 20, 2008 11:03:49am

I just sent the following e-mail to the newspaper's "contact us" link:

If Brit Hume did not say or imply that, why did the reporter say he did? Just curious. Did the reporter confuse Brit Hume with someone else, or did he just make this up? If he simply made it up, is he going to be sanctioned in some way for making up quotes? Isn’t fabricating stories out of thin air a violation of journalistic ethics or something? How can I know when this reporter is reporting accurately vs. when he is making things up?

Anyone want to bet on whether or not I get a response?

re: #89 buzzsawmonkey

Exactly. It's a crock. Not voting for a person due to skin color might have been true a half century ago -- but this is now. In today's world skin color (for the vast majority of the electorate) just isn't a relevant factor. I also wonder if Obama believes these lies himself -- or is he just mouthing it (going through the motions -- drearily rehearsed) for the benefit of capitalizing on white guilt?

132 erp  Thu, Mar 20, 2008 11:23:07am

I googled Brit's parents to see if the commenter above was right about his father. I was stunned at the vitriol even on Wikipedia. Of course, nothing about Brit's background, except an account of his son's suicide and the alleged errors he made about FDR.

Google has slipped far into the dark side. Where do any of you go for information now?

133 _remembertonyc  Thu, Mar 20, 2008 12:21:10pm

Usually in newspaper corrections, the paper will bend over backwards to *avoid* repeating the error.

Here they relished it, and put the disclaimer in the next sentence, just to drive it home.

Fake, but... aw, never mind.

Since the guy put his email address at the bottom of his piece--milloyc@washpost.com:

"Blaming whites?" You got a transcript for that?
You must be desperate to have to make shit up. Classic liberal!

Surprisingly, he responded:

You got me on that one, Paul. A big f up. Put the wrong words in the wrong guy; but stay tuned, you classic conservatives are always saying some truly amazing stuff. Thanks for writing.

When you work for a big MSM outlet and you're in love with your subject, who can tell you anything?

140 swamprat  Thu, Mar 20, 2008 8:55:21pm

Hume is the best. He has always been. The sort of fellow you would expect in an ivy-covered school. Full of marble buildings and tradition. A good sort. Hail, and well met, a smile of steel, and garnet cuff links.

141 CPL 310  Thu, Mar 20, 2008 9:55:11pm

If I can't find some news I'll just have to make some up.

Seems I read that in a sci-fi book about 15 years ago.

So what are the rules for libel? If some (distasteful expletive) reporter just writes "Bob said: I hate m---s, k----s, k---s, n-----s, s----s, g---s and j----------s!", when Bob never said such a thing, can't Bob... uh... sue? Or can Bob just take it straight to Thunderdome?

142 littleO  Fri, Mar 21, 2008 6:10:03am

Who do you call if you want serious libel and slander laws?
A story about the McCann family in Britain, who lost their child while on vacation in Portugal, Were slandered by a tabloid saying they had killed their child and were involved in an elaborate cover-up.
That tabloid was forced into pre-trial plea bargaining to pay a million dollars to the McCann's and make a front page apology. All because such laws in the UK have been toughened so that one has to be able to prove allegations.
We should do the same.

143 EEprom  Fri, Mar 21, 2008 6:36:20am

I emailed Mr. Milloy, calling him on this and here is the response I recieved:

You got me on that one, Swenson. I sure made one dumb mistake. Anway, I wrote a correction, apologized to Brit and now I will apologize to you as a reader.

Sincerely,

Courtland Milloy
