RetweetThe Diversity Show, Starring Michelle Obama: 'We Need More White People'

Tue, Apr 8, 2008 at 10:31:28 am PDT

When Michelle Obama spoke at Carnegie Mellon University last week, her event organizers had a very specific purpose in mind as they handpicked the people who sat behind her: Michelle Obama speaks at presidential rally in Skibo Gym.

While the crowd was indeed diverse, some students at the event questioned the practices of Mrs. Obama’s event coordinators, who handpicked the crowd sitting behind Mrs. Obama. The Tartan’s correspondents observed one event coordinator say to another, “Get me more white people, we need more white people.” To an Asian girl sitting in the back row, one coordinator said, “We’re moving you, sorry. It’s going to look so pretty, though.”

“I didn’t know they would say, ‘We need a white person here,’ ” said attendee and senior psychology major Shayna Watson, who sat in the crowd behind Mrs. Obama. “I understood they would want a show of diversity, but to pick up people and to reseat them, I didn’t know it would be so outright.”

Mrs. Obama was careful to note that the Obamas, both of whom are Harvard-educated lawyers and who together own a million-dollar home in Illinois, grew up under difficult conditions.

I don't know. I suspect that the average Typical White Person would not consider the $7000 a year private school Obama attended in Hawai'i difficult circumstances" by any stretch of the imagination.

Barefoot children of sharecroppers would have been "difficult circumstances."

UN expert stands by Nazi comments

The next UN investigator into Israeli conduct in the occupied territories has stood by comments comparing Israeli actions in Gaza to those of the Nazis.

Speaking to the BBC, Professor Richard Falk said he believed that up to now Israel had been successful in avoiding the criticism that it was due.

Professor Falk is scheduled to take up his post for the UN Human Rights Council later in the year.

But Israel wants his mandate changed to probe Palestinian actions as well.

Professor Falk said he drew the comparison between the treatment of Palestinians with the Nazi record of collective atrocity, because of what he described as the massive Israeli punishment directed at the entire population of Gaza.

It is beyond me how people are not seeing who the Obamas really are.
I'm not a fan of Hillary's (or even McCain for that matter) but damn, they're hitting that woman for every little thing and say basically that her lies and "mis-speaking describes her real character.
Meanwhile, in another part of idiotville, Obama had multiple dealings with (VERY) questionable people, and he gets a pass and excuses, saying his associations have absolutely nothing to do with who he is.
The Dems do a great double talk. Sorry, but I think this was fixed a long time ago.

in the extreme liberal mind, in these cricumstances, the ends completely justify the means. they just don't care, they want it done. no matter how insane the road there is.

In my opinion, Ms. Obama is nothing more than a pretty hollow shell with little to no character. She panders to the masses to get votes, she continually whines in spite of her privileged lifestyle, and she insults this country and a large portion of the people living here. She is nothing more than Theresa Heinz Kerry with a little more spit and polish, a better hairstyle, and a much prettier face. Small town paper standing up to the nutroots.

Bellingham Herald Opinion Editor's Blog

Coffee shop vandals aren't too bright

Is it too much to ask that supposedly political-minded vandals at least be making a valid point?

The petty criminals who stenciled the message “Fascism begins with the sale of public space” obviously don’t know what they are talking about.
...
...
...

I looked up the definition online at [Link: www.merriam-webster.com...]

Fascism 1: a political philosophy, movement, or regime that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition

2: a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control

I’m trying to figure out how placing a coffee shop in Boulevard Park after several public meetings ends up meeting that definition.

Having a coffee shop in the park doesn’t “exalt nation ... above the individual.” Having numerous public meetings about what to do with the building and settling on a coffee shop doesn’t seem to me like “centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader.” I really don’t recall any “forcible suppression of opposition” at those meetings.

And I don’t think allowing a small business to operate as it pleases is “severe economic and social regimentation.”

The coffee shop in the park is clearly not the first building ever owned by government and occupied by a business. The city of Bellingham owns other buildings with private businesses operating inside. The port of Bellingham practically makes a living operating that way. Have these vandals never been to Squalicum Harbor Marina or the Bellingham International Airport?

As was pointed out in the story about the vandals in today’s newspaper, which you can read at [Link: www.bellinghamherald.com...] the building in Boulevard Park previously held a privately owned pottery studio with no protest.

I am not a coffee drinker and have never set foot inside the Boulevard Park Woods Coffee shop. I’m not even sure how I feel about having a coffee shop in Boulevard Park.

But putting it there surely isn’t fascism.

It is good to see someone still trying to use logic in the newspaper business. Even if it is on their blog.

Which brings up an interesting historical note. I have no real evidence - just some insight from what I have read about the middle ages up through the 17th and 18th centuries, but wasn't it common that merchants -any merchants - plying their trade in the Mediterranean were susceptible to pirate attacks from (gasp) African Muslims and that as prisoners - they were liable to enslaved if their families could not ransom them? Might the wariness of today's Europeans and Americans be deep-seeded in historical precedent?

You are refering to the Barbary wars. Muslim pirates attacked American and European interests and Americans and Europeans for a time prefered to pay the "tribute" aka jizya to both redeem their captives and ensure "safe" trade. This was until the American government started to seriously consider the building of their navy, but even that move was not without domestic controversy. So, to answer your question-there is a deep seated European and (unfortunately) American history of paying 'tribute' to Muslims.

I asked why, and they told me it was because minorities (and specifically blacks) were under represented in the ranks of my band, as determined by our promo pictures. At the time I had a 14 piece band. It had 2 blacks, 3 Hispanics, 2 Asians, 2 women and the remainder were whites, and my voter registration at the time was (D).

You got off lucky. I think the new Federal Sentencing Guidelines provide for a 3-18 month sentence for underrepresentation in an orchestral, jazz, or ska band context.

re: #156 rawmuse

Diversity is not a random thing. I'm sure there will soon be majors offered in the science of diversity.

As graduate schools struggle to attract Hispanic students, a new challenge looms: the relevance of focusing on domestic diversity in an increasingly global economy.

This economy requires skills and perspectives that domestic diversity doesn't automatically imply – or supply. While the big picture in the United States has been to offset the social and political wrongs of the past, the new picture concentrates on a cultural literacy that eases the entry of U.S. businesses worldwide.

Ironically, in filling this void, companies are increasingly hiring foreign nationals – some educated in the United States, some overseas – who are considered Hispanic but often lack the cultural experiences of the struggle for diversity shared by U.S. Hispanics.

What are your thoughts, gang?

You have no evidence? How can you have no evidence? Read John Adams. Read the history of the USS Constitution. Read Winston Churchill for heaven's sake.

Obama has said numerous times that he considers himself lucky to have been able to get a great education, and he says that only in America is it likely that someone who came from such modest circumstances would have been able to do so.

I did not state that his family paid $7000 a year for him to attend the school. I said that he went there. When the Crane had extracted the bone and demanded the promised

It depends upon the hybrid. An Escape hybrid will get better mileage than a regular Escape, but not better than say your Beretta. It's still a larger vehicle no matter how you slice it. Also, hybrids get better mileage in stop and go traffic than normal vehicles, but they tend to be about the same on the highway.

Not wise. Who were you yelling at? Someone who might pull a pistol out and shoot you? You should consider what you don't know before putting yourself in jeopardy.

Amazing how all sorts of safety features decrease fuel efficiency.

Thanks Federal Government.

And they just don't seem to be all that much safer. You could drive my 23 mpg Caddy into a brick wall and the only thing you would hurt would be the wall. Not to mention that the car manufacturers have now made them so complex that you not only can't fix your own car, the guy at the corner garage probably can't either, leaving you with no choice but to pay through the noise at the dealership.

But, nooo, the Democratic 'Control Gene' takes over and 'fixes' everything just the way they want it. These people couldn't go for a walk in the woods without being overcome with a desire to move trees around because they know better how to set them up.

Pathetic.

Give me my freedom. Get out of my way. I'm a smart guy. I can think for myself and I can take care of those around me who need it and I can leave those alone who don't.

It isn't the job of the government to protect us from ourselves. There's a design for a 50mpg car, but you can bet it'll get half that here once they make it 'street legal' with the safety requirements...

Heh, how about mentioning that if you add ethanol to gasoline, you actually reduce gas mileage by about 10%. Ethanol has less stored energy per gallon than a gallon of gasoline, which means you need more ethanol to go the same distance. If you fill up with blended gas, you're still going to see less gas mileage.

What a frickin' waste.

So put away that meat you're selling

But you're not benefiting, and yet I'm sitting
Singing again, sing, sing again

How can I deal with this, if he wont get with this

re: #280 buzzsawmonkey

Interesting thing today on NPR; they were talking about the terrible price rise in gas, how it was higher than ever, then actually alluded to the facts that a) there was not enough refinery capacity, and that b) gasoline is a low-profit item, so there is little incentive to increase production.

I was waiting for them to hit the trifecta by mentioning that the addition of ethanol distilled from grain usable for food or feed is another factor in the rising price, but there I was disappointed.

The lack of refinery capacity is the main issue though. Ethanol being added to gasoline doesn't add much to the price, if at all. We have stations around here that sell 100% gasoline at 10 cents more than gasoline with 10% ethanol. Casey's General Stores do this a lot.

However, it is ironic that NPR would bitch about the lack of refining capacity since it is their types in the first place that made it tough for the oil companies to add on to existing refineries or build new refineries.

Plus, gasoline is a lower profit item because the shit is taxed out of it. A very sizable percentage of what you pay is taxes. And, if you live in a state that has a sales tax on gasoline as well as the normal gas taxes, you get hit even harder when prices go up.

Ethanol does raise the octane rating, allowing a higher compression ratio which partially offsets its lower chemical energy content through more efficient combustion. However, this does no good unless you actually increase your compression ratio to compensate, which is impractical in most instances.

Also, where was Rockefeller when Clinton was bombing the hell out of Serbia, embassies, trains, killing 2000 civilians?

You mean this Rockefeller? The one who said this?

There is unmistakable evidence that Saddam Hussein is working aggressively to develop nuclear weapons and will likely have nuclear weapons within the next five years. And that may happen sooner if he can obtain access to enriched uranium from foreign sources--something that is not that difficult in the current world. We should also remember that we have always underestimated the progress Saddam has made in development of weapons of mass destruction . . . But this isn't just a future threat. Saddam's existing biological and chemical weapons capabilities pose a very real threat to America, now. Saddam has
used chemical weapons before, both against Iraq's enemies and against his own people. He is working to develop delivery systems like missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles that could bring these deadly weapons against U.S. forces and U.S. facilities in the Middle East. . . .

We had Paveway, but that was later in the war (while McCain was in captivity). Paveway is a laser-guided bomb (free-fall with fins and a guidance/sensor package on the nose), not a missile. The "bunker busters" used in GWI were just oversized Paveways that used surplus Howitzer barrels from Fort Benjamin Harrison, filled with HE.

"No Sales Tax" weekend, shortly before school begins each year.

We have one of those in MA every August as well...cars not included though.
We pay 5% sales tax on them and also pay yearly excise tax at the rate of $25 per every $1,000 of the car's value.

Ah yes, good ole tetraethyl lead. You realize we're still cleaning up places that used this to boost octane. MTBE isn't much better either. The main problem with MTBE was its ability to travel in groundwater.

Absolutely, that stuff in minute quantities in water is bad. So now we have ethanol, to which I can personally attest, is fairly safe to drink in moderate quantities. Yeah, sometimes immoderate quantities, too.
Do away with that and how are we going to raise the octane enough to keep from destroying our car engines through pre-ignition?

Indeed, McCain's plane was hit by a SAM during the pulling-up portion. But I'm sure Jay Rockefeller has done things just as dangerous. For instance, there was this one time, when due to a scheduling error his staff was all on vacation, that he actually had to drive himself from the main house to the stables.

in older engines (more than 5 or so years I think), the engine doesn't function well with that corn-crap in it.

I drive a 95 beretta and once a month I run fuel injector cleaner in it... I hold a steady 25mpg.

I still want a small pickup (like the tiny version of the ford ranger) and a motorcycle (for the non-raining/cold days)

Ethanol does raise the octane rating, allowing a higher compression ratio which partially offsets its lower chemical energy content through more efficient combustion. However, this does no good unless you actually increase your compression ratio to compensate, which is impractical in most instances.

Compression ratios have been reduced to prevent formation of nitrogen oxides, which might account for some of the better mileage some lizards got before the compression was reduced

Here's another one from redstate's link:

Why is there always Money for War, But Not for Education?

That'd be a viable question if we held Education even REMOTELY as accountable as the dems hold the military.

Also... It seems like teachers and staff are paid MUCH better than soldiers are. Perhaps we should ask teachers and staff to take pay cuts in order to pump more of the ever-increasing money into the classroom, like they demand of oil-execs?

(After all, per hour worked, as attested to by studies of teachers themselves, teachers get paid more than anyone but doctors and lawyers... yet they complain about having to get a second job in the summer to make ends meet... Most of us have to work year round and don't get a few months off.)

re: #203 galloping granny

The original point had been -kiddingly made- that black people are racist because whitey made them that way. My point is if that if that is true, then why was "whitey" racist to begin - what was the origin of white racism (assuming that "whitey is in fact racist)? My "opinion" for which I have little evidence is that if Europeans are disposed to being racist, its because of centuries of being preyed on by Muslims and Africans. One might even suggest that there are still hard feelings in Italy against Carthage - but that's too far back.

Europeans got into the African slave trade by the late 17th century when the New World started to develop commercially - when Western Europe was becoming ascendant in the world, and the Ottomans began to decline. The evidence I am looking for is the attitudes of the Europeans to Africans at that time. Perhaps there was the desire for a little payback? I think there is enough historical evidence to show that in terms of race relations between Europe and Africa/Asia -it's been a see-saw between who is the oppressor and the oppressed.

Of course there's evidence piratical activities by the Muslims. The question is how far back does it go and how deeply rooted in Europe is the fear and distrust of Muslims and/or Africans because of it. I have to think that it would be fairly deep if a group of people not only preyed on one commercial lifelines, but also sold the passengers and crews into slavery in a captive land.

How many thousands of Europeans were treated this way and where are their descendants within Muslim lands? Where's their Lincoln or Wilberforce? Where's their reparations; their "forty acres and a mule?"

My point, overall, is that poor race relations between blacks and whites is not unique the to "modern" historical era (post 1789), but that it must go back far further.

I've been viewing some YouTube Obama family videos.

Barak is hypnotic. I find myself feeling a certain grief that he is not on our team.

Michelle is mean, ugly, and scary, and I don't find her a good speaker at all. She is totally "hateable." I'm getting nauseated at her relentless comparison of herself and her busy life as a "working mother" to all those working class mothers who actually DO work and juggle a lot in their daily lives. How much longer do we need to hear about oppression of blacks from someone whose childhood wasn't even bad and who is now filthy rich?

Then I watched some McCain family videos, and got even more depressed. McCain is a completely unimpressive and uninspiring speaker, and his wife is a bottle-blonde bimbette who looks like she's had one too many benzos. His history with his first wife is not very complimentary either.

Is this the best we've got?
