Quite a contrast to those prancing nincompoops attempting to browbear General Petraeus earlier today.

Israel's treatment toward Gazans is actually more favorable than that of Egypt.

"Israel has said it will ease the blockade only if Hamas halts rocket fire and other militant attacks on Israeli targets. Egypt refuses to recognize Hamas' rule and has said it can only open the border as part of an international agreement."

+pathetic!

Any brown-baggers in here? Lunch is too damn expensive, so heres Max's lunch:

-Turkey sandwich on wheat.
-Tomatoes kept in a seperate baggie (so my sandwich does'nt get soggy).
-(2) pickles.
-(1) hard boiled egg.
-(1) Apple, Orange and banana.
-(2) Granola bars.
-Yogurt for desert.

Now my partner walks in daily with KFC chicken, Panda Chinese food, teriyaki steak sandwiches with melted cheese and Mexican Food and my mouth waters, but I stick to my little bag lunch.

So I was thinking I would some coding of my own (not Web page coding, though), and I thought I should talk to the boss about it.

Alas, he doesn't think it will be that useful. Bummer. But I can still do part of it, I think, to make my life easier. But I must think long and hard about how much to code.

So my brain is stuck.

The worst is when pull one out of the bag everyone expect that type of performance every time. It worked all the vendors had stock, or a little spare time to fit it in. Plus I treat my vendors right so when I ask for a favor, they more willing to help out. It worked out, this time.

For Michael:

O go you onward; where you are
Shall honour and laughter be,
Past purpled forest and pearled foam,
God's winged pavilion free to roam,
Your face, that is a wandering home,
A flying home for me.

Ride through the silent earthquake lands,
Wide as a waste is wide,
Across these days like deserts, when
Pride and a little scratching pen
Have dried and split the hearts of men,
Heart of the heroes, ride.

Up through an empty house of stars,
Being what heart you are,
Up the inhuman steeps of space
As on a staircase go in grace,
Carrying the firelight on your face
Beyond the loneliest star.

Are comments rationed in some way? I left the last thread, which indicated 38 comments on this thread. I came here, which was around comment 10, hit new comments, and got 10 more comments, hit new comments right away again and then hit the 38 number.
Feature, rationing, or bug?

I'm trying to figure out how much he spends monthly on his/her lunches, as opposed to how much you spend. I'd say the math probably goes something like this:

Partner: 5 days X $6 X 4 weeks = $120 (conservatively)
Max: 5 days X $1 (ish) X 4 weeks = $20

I'd say you're the smarter and healthier one, Max. Partner wolfs down at least 50 fat grams per lunch, as opposed to maybe 25 for you.

And that extra $100 per week, socked away in a Roth IRA - over the years, that's gonna afford you some nice lunches after you hit 59 1/2 years of age.

figure 8 to 10 bucks a lunch.... that's 40 to 50 bucks a week.

around 200 bucks a month, just for lunches.

2400 bucks a year.

Now, I MAKE my lunches for around 3 bucks a day.

That's only around 800 bucks a year.

There are so many beautiful areas in DC bordering on National Parks/federal buildings & commercial areas, you can be safe most of the time.

Though last year or the year before, gangstas were robbing people on the National Mall, formerly policed on horseback by the Capitol Police I thought, which runs from the Capitol Building past the Smithsonian museums to the Washington Monument.

Thats a good idea, soup sounds pretty good.

Also brown bagging gives me time to read up on lgf updates at lunch instead of standing in line waiting for a burger that looks like someone sat on it. I saw an advertisment for Chili-cheese fries at Carl's Jr and at 45, I just can't eat like that anymore.

I went to DC with my mother one year, for a weekend. She was actually there for work for the week, but it was cheaper to fly her there for a week and a few days.... so I bought a ticket and we went sightseeing for a few days.

We stayed in Baltimore and took the train to DC. We decided that it was a nice day and we'd walk to the White House from the station. She held the map. We went the wrong way. After walking around wholly lost for a few hours, surrounded by houses with bars or boards on their windows, bulletholes and a gunshot, we found a school.

In the school was an armed guard who wouldn't let me even use a restroom or let us call a cab. We had to walk another dozen blocks (based on their bad directions) to a gas station where we used a pay phone to call a cab.

By the time the cab got there, and got us to the white house, they were no longer open, so we went back to the train station and went back to the hotel.

I just want to clarify my above "not a bid deal" statement. I meant that the "flare up" between Charles and myself was not as drawn out, dramatic, and vicious, as some other "causes for banning" have been. Whether it was, or was not, the statements(s) were a "big deal" (as in the affect they had) to myself, Charles, or anyone else involved is not for me to really say.

Blame your mother & throw her under the bus!
Actually, blame french architect Pierre L'Enfant for Washington DC's funny radial spoked streets and quadrants.

You do have to know which areas are bad, and in which direction to hike!

Perhaps this was before the Metro? You could have walked straight south from Union Station to the Capitol Building, then walked west along the Mall til you saw the southern aspect of the White House.

You could have taken Metro to Farragut West Metro Station, 17th street side, and walked down a couple blocks.

But I've heard that such activities could be very inexpensive, depending on if they were done in tourist areas (i.e. Bangkok or Pattaya) or not (i.e. Chiang Mai/Chiang Rai)

Protien is what you need to get through the day.

I love a nice sandwich on good bread with fresh veggies. I usually buy sliced meat at cheese at the deli. Sometimes I make chicken or tuna salad, or make a simple cheese sandwich. I vary the bread type to keep it interesting, and on the rare occasion I'll stuff a croissant.

I usually pack a salad or soup to go with it... never chips.

Hard boiled eggs are good, but so are deviled eggs for variety. My kids love it when I make these. You can turn out 24 of these little beauties with a dozen eggs.

I'm with you on the pickles and olives. I also like radishes and cherry tomatos with salt, and cheese (sliced or chunked).

I always take fresh cut-up fruit for the afternoon snack, it provides a great energy punch when everyone else is struggling to stay awake... gives you a professional edge. I avoid those snack machines like the plague.

As far as drinks go, I stopped drinking soda years ago. I drink sweetened iced tea all the time now... I make it fresh every night in an insulated gallon jug, and I refill my hot/cold mug with it during the workday. All it costs is the price of a couple of tea bags and some sugar. Its' way better for you too, loaded with antioxidents.

You won't gain weight drinking tea, like you do when you drink soda. If you don't like the caffeine you can use decaf tea bags.

indeed. I bet you dollars-to-donuts that is why alot of European cultures remain healthier, cardio vascular-wise amongst others, than us, despite consuming more fats and other "harmful" things; it's the way the food is prepared (fresh), and the way in which it is consumed (in a relaxed manner in the middle of the day (by and large)).

take the south of france for example, they cook with fat and lard, sauces, gravies, you name it. yet, their instance(s) of cardio vascular issues are way less than ours.....

It is my experience that the Mall and Monuments and most of NW (Georgia Ave west to the river) is the only parts of DC worth seeing and safe to navigate as well. NE/SW/and SE you want to stay away from. If you are not familiar with the area it is easy to get lost.

I may be wrong, but didn't they think poor Ms. Levy's body had been moved there, but that she had probably been murdered elsewhere?

I think the Park is fine even for a woman alone during the day on weekends; maybe also during the week. But I'm always amazed when I see women jogging there alone, at dusk, with their iPods plugged in, oblivious to the world. Just on general principal, bad idea. Ahmadinejad Goes Troofer!

Exclusive: Ahmadinejad denies al Qaeda’s 9/11 attack on America

In his most provocative anti-US speech to date, Iran’s president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad raised doubts about whether al Qaeda's Sept. 11, 2001 attack on New York actually took place. He was addressing Iran’s Nuclear Technology day, April 8, DEBKAfile’s Iranian sources report. He went on to ask why the US had never released the names of the thousands of dead in the Trade Center attacks (in fact, the names have been published) and how the most advanced security, intelligence and tracking devices in the world had failed to detect the hijackers’ planes before they struck the two New York towers.

...America is disintegrating politically, militarily and economically, according to Ahmadinejad, who boasted that Iran’s nuclear achievement is a turning-point in history that will change the international order prevailing since World War II.

He asked why everyone jumps on Iran’s nuclear program when “a band of international pirates has stores crammed with nuclear bombs.”

Faster, please.

Exactly right. The French put a high premium on fresh locally grown food, prepared simply and served in small portions.

yep. and the German, Polish, and Austrian students that stayed with us ovver the years did the same thing. Well, as best they could in our food market system here in the US. but, I could tell their set ups at home were conducive to daily-bought fresh produce and things, just like I heard about the french.

it's actually, too, about the way towns are laid out. local markets, small stores, short distances. sounds idyllic, frankly.

My factory was just down the street from a major frozen food company. Many trucks would drop product for me before proceeding up the street. The 55 gallon drums of chemicals that they used in their "foods" turned me off permanently to that kind of food. If I see more than five items listed on the food label, it goes back on the shelf. He said he called McCain to apologize.

"I made an inaccurate and wrong analogy, and I have extended my sincere apology to him," Rockefeller said in a statement. "While we differ a great deal on policy issues, I profoundly respect and appreciate his dedication to our country, and I regret my very poor choice of words."

The McCain campaign called on Obama to condemn Rockefeller's words. Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor said Obama disagrees with Rockefeller.

"Senator Obama has a deep respect for Senator McCain's service to this country and doesn't agree with what Senator Rockefeller said," Vietor said.

McCain was shot down during the Vietnam War and spent nearly six years as a prisoner of war.

No but they do focus on seasonal foods much more than American markets. A French supermarket is very interesting. Much more floorspace devoted to Fresh meat, vegetables and bread (the real thing) and much less space devoted to frozen, boxed or canned food products.

they are catering to key societal differences. it is all inter-related. whether or not they can stop the slide to where we in the US are at now, who knows. fast food, fat kids, more food allergies, asthmas, etc.

yikes!

He just wants to ask me for it and have me deliver it.

But it would still make my life easier in the long run, I think. But the coding up front could be pretty heavy.

Ok, aside from the morally offensive nature of Rockefeller's comment, the statement is factually stupid.

During the Vietnam War, fighter pilots did not drop "laser guided missiles". Lasers had only just been invented a few years earlier and were not used for military targeting until the 1980's. Furthermore, pilots dropped bombs, not surface to air missiles, from 35,000 feet.

No, but most of what we eat isn't really food. It's food products. The produce and meat sections of the grocery store have the real food. The rest of that floorspace is taken up by food products. Even bread. Do you even remember what day old bread is like? The stuff you buy in the store will stay "fresh" for two weeks. There's a reason for that.

My Dad was a baker, as a kid I grew up eating day old bakery bread that was made without any preservatives.

(Dad used to call Wonder Bread puffed air.)

Now days the best I can do is to buy the multi grain bread.

My factory was just down the street from a major frozen food company. Many trucks would drop product for me before proceeding up the street. The 55 gallon drums of chemicals that they used in their "foods" turned me off permanently to that kind of food. If I see more than five items listed on the food label, it goes back on the shelf. If you can't read the ingredients out loud, in one breath, forget about it.
