Quite a contrast to those prancing nincompoops attempting to browbear General Petraeus earlier today.

Israel's treatment toward Gazans is actually more favorable than that of Egypt.

"Israel has said it will ease the blockade only if Hamas halts rocket fire and other militant attacks on Israeli targets. Egypt refuses to recognize Hamas' rule and has said it can only open the border as part of an international agreement."

+pathetic!

Any brown-baggers in here? Lunch is too damn expensive, so heres Max's lunch:

-Turkey sandwich on wheat.
-Tomatoes kept in a seperate baggie (so my sandwich does'nt get soggy).
-(2) pickles.
-(1) hard boiled egg.
-(1) Apple, Orange and banana.
-(2) Granola bars.
-Yogurt for desert.

Now my partner walks in daily with KFC chicken, Panda Chinese food, teriyaki steak sandwiches with melted cheese and Mexican Food and my mouth waters, but I stick to my little bag lunch.

So I was thinking I would some coding of my own (not Web page coding, though), and I thought I should talk to the boss about it.

Alas, he doesn't think it will be that useful. Bummer. But I can still do part of it, I think, to make my life easier. But I must think long and hard about how much to code.

So my brain is stuck.

The worst is when pull one out of the bag everyone expect that type of performance every time. It worked all the vendors had stock, or a little spare time to fit it in. Plus I treat my vendors right so when I ask for a favor, they more willing to help out. It worked out, this time.

For Michael:

O go you onward; where you are
Shall honour and laughter be,
Past purpled forest and pearled foam,
God's winged pavilion free to roam,
Your face, that is a wandering home,
A flying home for me.

Ride through the silent earthquake lands,
Wide as a waste is wide,
Across these days like deserts, when
Pride and a little scratching pen
Have dried and split the hearts of men,
Heart of the heroes, ride.

Up through an empty house of stars,
Being what heart you are,
Up the inhuman steeps of space
As on a staircase go in grace,
Carrying the firelight on your face
Beyond the loneliest star.

Are comments rationed in some way? I left the last thread, which indicated 38 comments on this thread. I came here, which was around comment 10, hit new comments, and got 10 more comments, hit new comments right away again and then hit the 38 number.
Feature, rationing, or bug?

I'm trying to figure out how much he spends monthly on his/her lunches, as opposed to how much you spend. I'd say the math probably goes something like this:

Partner: 5 days X $6 X 4 weeks = $120 (conservatively)
Max: 5 days X $1 (ish) X 4 weeks = $20

I'd say you're the smarter and healthier one, Max. Partner wolfs down at least 50 fat grams per lunch, as opposed to maybe 25 for you.

And that extra $100 per week, socked away in a Roth IRA - over the years, that's gonna afford you some nice lunches after you hit 59 1/2 years of age.

figure 8 to 10 bucks a lunch.... that's 40 to 50 bucks a week.

around 200 bucks a month, just for lunches.

2400 bucks a year.

Now, I MAKE my lunches for around 3 bucks a day.

That's only around 800 bucks a year.

There are so many beautiful areas in DC bordering on National Parks/federal buildings & commercial areas, you can be safe most of the time.

Though last year or the year before, gangstas were robbing people on the National Mall, formerly policed on horseback by the Capitol Police I thought, which runs from the Capitol Building past the Smithsonian museums to the Washington Monument.

Thats a good idea, soup sounds pretty good.

Also brown bagging gives me time to read up on lgf updates at lunch instead of standing in line waiting for a burger that looks like someone sat on it. I saw an advertisment for Chili-cheese fries at Carl's Jr and at 45, I just can't eat like that anymore.

I went to DC with my mother one year, for a weekend. She was actually there for work for the week, but it was cheaper to fly her there for a week and a few days.... so I bought a ticket and we went sightseeing for a few days.

We stayed in Baltimore and took the train to DC. We decided that it was a nice day and we'd walk to the White House from the station. She held the map. We went the wrong way. After walking around wholly lost for a few hours, surrounded by houses with bars or boards on their windows, bulletholes and a gunshot, we found a school.

In the school was an armed guard who wouldn't let me even use a restroom or let us call a cab. We had to walk another dozen blocks (based on their bad directions) to a gas station where we used a pay phone to call a cab.

By the time the cab got there, and got us to the white house, they were no longer open, so we went back to the train station and went back to the hotel.

I just want to clarify my above "not a bid deal" statement. I meant that the "flare up" between Charles and myself was not as drawn out, dramatic, and vicious, as some other "causes for banning" have been. Whether it was, or was not, the statements(s) were a "big deal" (as in the affect they had) to myself, Charles, or anyone else involved is not for me to really say.

Blame your mother & throw her under the bus!
Actually, blame french architect Pierre L'Enfant for Washington DC's funny radial spoked streets and quadrants.

You do have to know which areas are bad, and in which direction to hike!

Perhaps this was before the Metro? You could have walked straight south from Union Station to the Capitol Building, then walked west along the Mall til you saw the southern aspect of the White House.

You could have taken Metro to Farragut West Metro Station, 17th street side, and walked down a couple blocks.

But I've heard that such activities could be very inexpensive, depending on if they were done in tourist areas (i.e. Bangkok or Pattaya) or not (i.e. Chiang Mai/Chiang Rai)

Protien is what you need to get through the day.

I love a nice sandwich on good bread with fresh veggies. I usually buy sliced meat at cheese at the deli. Sometimes I make chicken or tuna salad, or make a simple cheese sandwich. I vary the bread type to keep it interesting, and on the rare occasion I'll stuff a croissant.

I usually pack a salad or soup to go with it... never chips.

Hard boiled eggs are good, but so are deviled eggs for variety. My kids love it when I make these. You can turn out 24 of these little beauties with a dozen eggs.

I'm with you on the pickles and olives. I also like radishes and cherry tomatos with salt, and cheese (sliced or chunked).

I always take fresh cut-up fruit for the afternoon snack, it provides a great energy punch when everyone else is struggling to stay awake... gives you a professional edge. I avoid those snack machines like the plague.

As far as drinks go, I stopped drinking soda years ago. I drink sweetened iced tea all the time now... I make it fresh every night in an insulated gallon jug, and I refill my hot/cold mug with it during the workday. All it costs is the price of a couple of tea bags and some sugar. Its' way better for you too, loaded with antioxidents.

You won't gain weight drinking tea, like you do when you drink soda. If you don't like the caffeine you can use decaf tea bags.

indeed. I bet you dollars-to-donuts that is why alot of European cultures remain healthier, cardio vascular-wise amongst others, than us, despite consuming more fats and other "harmful" things; it's the way the food is prepared (fresh), and the way in which it is consumed (in a relaxed manner in the middle of the day (by and large)).

take the south of france for example, they cook with fat and lard, sauces, gravies, you name it. yet, their instance(s) of cardio vascular issues are way less than ours.....

It is my experience that the Mall and Monuments and most of NW (Georgia Ave west to the river) is the only parts of DC worth seeing and safe to navigate as well. NE/SW/and SE you want to stay away from. If you are not familiar with the area it is easy to get lost.

I may be wrong, but didn't they think poor Ms. Levy's body had been moved there, but that she had probably been murdered elsewhere?

I think the Park is fine even for a woman alone during the day on weekends; maybe also during the week. But I'm always amazed when I see women jogging there alone, at dusk, with their iPods plugged in, oblivious to the world. Just on general principal, bad idea. Ahmadinejad Goes Troofer!

Exclusive: Ahmadinejad denies al Qaeda’s 9/11 attack on America

In his most provocative anti-US speech to date, Iran’s president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad raised doubts about whether al Qaeda's Sept. 11, 2001 attack on New York actually took place. He was addressing Iran’s Nuclear Technology day, April 8, DEBKAfile’s Iranian sources report. He went on to ask why the US had never released the names of the thousands of dead in the Trade Center attacks (in fact, the names have been published) and how the most advanced security, intelligence and tracking devices in the world had failed to detect the hijackers’ planes before they struck the two New York towers.

...America is disintegrating politically, militarily and economically, according to Ahmadinejad, who boasted that Iran’s nuclear achievement is a turning-point in history that will change the international order prevailing since World War II.

He asked why everyone jumps on Iran’s nuclear program when “a band of international pirates has stores crammed with nuclear bombs.”

Faster, please.

Exactly right. The French put a high premium on fresh locally grown food, prepared simply and served in small portions.

yep. and the German, Polish, and Austrian students that stayed with us ovver the years did the same thing. Well, as best they could in our food market system here in the US. but, I could tell their set ups at home were conducive to daily-bought fresh produce and things, just like I heard about the french.

it's actually, too, about the way towns are laid out. local markets, small stores, short distances. sounds idyllic, frankly.

My factory was just down the street from a major frozen food company. Many trucks would drop product for me before proceeding up the street. The 55 gallon drums of chemicals that they used in their "foods" turned me off permanently to that kind of food. If I see more than five items listed on the food label, it goes back on the shelf. He said he called McCain to apologize.

"I made an inaccurate and wrong analogy, and I have extended my sincere apology to him," Rockefeller said in a statement. "While we differ a great deal on policy issues, I profoundly respect and appreciate his dedication to our country, and I regret my very poor choice of words."

The McCain campaign called on Obama to condemn Rockefeller's words. Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor said Obama disagrees with Rockefeller.

"Senator Obama has a deep respect for Senator McCain's service to this country and doesn't agree with what Senator Rockefeller said," Vietor said.

McCain was shot down during the Vietnam War and spent nearly six years as a prisoner of war.

No but they do focus on seasonal foods much more than American markets. A French supermarket is very interesting. Much more floorspace devoted to Fresh meat, vegetables and bread (the real thing) and much less space devoted to frozen, boxed or canned food products.

they are catering to key societal differences. it is all inter-related. whether or not they can stop the slide to where we in the US are at now, who knows. fast food, fat kids, more food allergies, asthmas, etc.

yikes!

Ok, aside from the morally offensive nature of Rockefeller's comment, the statement is factually stupid.

During the Vietnam War, fighter pilots did not drop "laser guided missiles". Lasers had only just been invented a few years earlier and were not used for military targeting until the 1980's. Furthermore, pilots dropped bombs, not surface to air missiles, from 35,000 feet.

No, but most of what we eat isn't really food. It's food products. The produce and meat sections of the grocery store have the real food. The rest of that floorspace is taken up by food products. Even bread. Do you even remember what day old bread is like? The stuff you buy in the store will stay "fresh" for two weeks. There's a reason for that.

My Dad was a baker, as a kid I grew up eating day old bakery bread that was made without any preservatives.

(Dad used to call Wonder Bread puffed air.)

Now days the best I can do is to buy the multi grain bread.

My factory was just down the street from a major frozen food company. Many trucks would drop product for me before proceeding up the street. The 55 gallon drums of chemicals that they used in their "foods" turned me off permanently to that kind of food. If I see more than five items listed on the food label, it goes back on the shelf. If you can't read the ingredients out loud, in one breath, forget about it.

According to her neighbor, yes. I saw the story this morning on TV and heard it on the radio coming in. The conservative talk show hosts were on her side (even though she was an Obama delegate). There is a long standing disagreement between Ms. Ramirez-Sliwinski and her neighbor who complained. Its all very simple.

The past is the past & it is over-and-done with. Bush is not going to be our President again, and that is just a fact jack. His mistakes are his, and are in the past...we need to start discussing the future, and what we are going to do to "fix" those "mistakes". That is what this next POTUS is going to have to deal with....the future.

Obama might have been the "guy who would have kept us out of Iraq" (past), but would insure that we surrender/lose in the future.

McCain is the guy who made a past mistake (possible) by agreeing we should go to Iraq, but would insure that we WIN in the future.

Vote McCain.

And McCain's A-4E wasn't dropping anything from 35,000 feet. His missions were incredibly dangerous, as his stay at the Hanoi Hilton attests.

Is that for a class, or is it something your company is using?

We're looking into moving our windows media services to 2008.
It is Vista for servers - makes it hard to do what you want (and I don't mean that it just does something in a different way, I mean that it tries to prevent you from doing some things)
Plus, we've had problems that Microcrap won't even acknowledge - like Visual Studio 2008 won't run on Server 2008 64-bit. They claim it works for them, but we're not the only one with the problem.
Unfortunately, our company won't pay for a real support contract, so we don't get real support. The per-call stuff sometimes works, sometimes not.

I just finished listening to Dore Gold's talk, which you linked to. Because radical Islam feeds on a sense of religious victory (and not grievance) the violence and terrorism will increase if any part of Jerusalem is granted to the Palestinians.

Great talk, thanks for the linkage.

He just wants to ask me for it and have me deliver it.

But it would still make my life easier in the long run, I think. But the coding up front could be pretty heavy.

True. However, with Perl or Python you could write a class for each type of file, and another class to collate that datya and present it as you see fit (print, web, XML, whatever). Short term it's a huge time sink. Long term you just run scripts when the boss needs info (and cron can do that for you ...)

re: #519 Slumbering Behemoth

That's odd that the company you work for wants to move to new (unproven) software. Most companies that I've worked for tend to wait a couple of years after release before adopting the new stuff.

What's motivating the transition?

We're using some features of Windows Media Server that don't adequately work, and were, in fact, recently changed. Microsoft supplies software that actually uses those features on 2008, not on 2003, so we figure that we'll get bugs fixed on 2008 but not 2003.

547 BabbaZee  Tue, Apr 8, 2008 1:57:46pm

re: #532 Kenneth

Babba,

I just finished listening to Dore Gold's talk, which you linked to. He made the essential point, contrary to the Western appeasement diplomats, that the threat from radical Islam will not diminish if Israel concedes Jerusalem to Islam. Because radical Islam feeds on a sense of religious victory (and not grievance) the violence and terrorism will increase if any part of Jerusalem is granted to the Palestinians.

Great talk, thanks for the linkage.

{Ken}

VITAL VITAL VITAL!

According to their whole cultural belief system and also according to Islamic eschatology the moment they have control of Jerusalem the Jihad amps up full bore, (we ain't seen nuthin' yet) and all the land for peace big wigs including our own President effin' know this.

re: #543 incanus

True. However, with Perl or Python you could write a class for each type of file, and another class to collate that datya and present it as you see fit (print, web, XML, whatever). Short term it's a huge time sink. Long term you just run scripts when the boss needs info (and cron can do that for you ...)

I've been doing more PHP stuff, but you're right, I could still write a class for the stuff. It would be good for me from a programming point of view, but a hard sell for my boss who doesn't see how it benefits him when he can just ask me for the data.

But I might still do it, just because it would be a good task.

I can't get into Python, and perl just makes me seasick with some of the language. I can read it if I have to, but prefer not to.

Bread from a good bakery will stay fresh for at least 2-3 days, and edible, unrefridgerated

The fridge is the worst place for bread. Either leave it out, or freeze it. The ambient temperature in the fridge actually makes the bread go stale faster than it would at room temperature.

Hey, did you hear McCain compare Obama to JFK, and himself to Nixon a couple days ago?

Nope. Was he talking about telegenic quality? I hope?

re: #661 Occasional Reader

He was asked if Obama had enough experience to be commander in Chief.

McCain responded something to the affect of...."well some might have said that JFK didn't have enough experience to be CIC when he ran against Nixon who had the experience.

Dumbass in one sentence compared Obama to JFK and himself to Nixon.

Used to live in Arlington, went to school and worked in D.C. (mid-late 60's, even drove a cab during the riots) never carried. Now I live in Birmingham, AL and always have my Glock. Don't know why anyone would be without. Stay safe (and prepared!).

Rockefeller also asserted (wrongly) McCain dropped laser guided missiles over Vietnam, which McCain did not.

So he apologized about the weapons, and so now McCain does care?

That's OK, I don't really expect it to make sense.

You're too young to remember preparing for nuclear war when the novice JFK put nuclear missiles in Turkey and Russia responded by putting nukes in Cuba. Your generation may miss the point, but mine didn't. Seriously Wrath, we were that frikin close.

Well, for one thing, it's illegal (for me, in DC).

That said, even if we had CCW, I don't know if I'd carry all the time.

It's a good question, with McCains age he may just assume that everyone gets his point. Or maybe he just flubbed it. I'll vote for him, based on the options, but I'm not thrilled.
I'm somewhat Catholic, btw, but JFK will never be more than a dangerous novice that got lucky. Lucky to win office, lucky with the Russians, till his luck ran out. Like Obama, gives good speech.

Wrath, might I suggest that you check out HP.com and possibly a laptop? I used to have desktops back to the early 80's, switched to laptops 3 years ago and never looked back. My current machine, 1 year old, is a HP Pavilion with the following specs:

Duo-core Centrino processors @ 1.83gz ea.
2 gigs memory
2 120 gig 7200 hard disks
Nvidia GeForce 7200 video card
Lightscribe DVD-RW Drive
Bluetooth wireless
4 USB ports, digital media port and any other port you could imagine
17" Ultra Bright-view HD monitor
FULL size keyboard w/numeric keypad- I wanted & like very much
Altec-Lansing speakers
remote control (for multi-media)
TV tuner - can you say TIVO?
Came with Windows XP Multi-media edition installed with a free up-grade to Vista Home Premium (whch I now run) all for 1450.00 sans shipping and taxes. Check out the HP outlet store on their web site. Great deals reside there and change from time to time. I got lucky.

[Link: www.fatboy.cc...] Both EXTREMELY entertaining reads. The book is about the Bulger Brothers, James "Whitey " Bulger, a Boston gangster, drug dealer and serial killer, and his brother, William "Billy" Bulger ( aka The Corrupt Midget") who was , the President of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, concurrent with his brothers reign of terror. It is a great insight into the cesspool that is Massachusetts politics.

About New Jersey's own Robert Menendez...

[Link: www.votesmart.org...]

"Project Vote Smart's Synopsis:

Vote to pass an amendment to reaffirm support for all men and women of the United States Armed Forces, to strongly condemn any attacks on General David Petraeus and all members of the US Armed Forces and to specifically condemn Moveon.orgs advertisement about General David Petraeus.

Official Title of Legislation:

S Amdt 2934 to S Amdt 2011 to HR 1585: To express the sense of the Senate that General David H. Petraeus, Commanding General, Multi-National Force-Iraq, deserves the full support of the Senate and strongly condemn personal attacks on the honor and integrity of General Petraeus and all members of the United States Armed Force."

Menendez voted "No."

===

[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

"On August 27, 2006, two Republican state lawmakers filed an ethics complaint against Menendez, alleging he broke conflict-of-interest rules when he rented property out to a nonprofit agency that receives federal funds. Menendez helped the organization win designation as a federally qualified health care center in 1998. That designation allowed the agency to receive additional federal grants.[8] Menendez allies note that the organization in question, the North Hudson Community Action Corp., which provides social services and health care to the poor and was founded in 1960, had received federal funding for years before Menendez was in Congress, and receives its funding based on mathematical formulas.[9] Menendez maintains that he rented the property out below market-value because "he was supportive of its work".[10] The total rent collected over nine years was over $300,000."

===

Menendez is a professional thief in a suit and tie.

Have the taxpayers of New Jersey gotten their $60 million a years worth out of their "elected" officials?

re: #686 WrathofG-d

The point I was trying to make is that you could purchase a laptop, with a full size keyboard that would eliminate the hurting fingers thingy for similar cost with a 17" monitor. I realize that you don't have the need for all the bells and whistles I purchased, I offered my info for price/power comparisons vs desktops. I also hated laptops for the small keyboards until I used one with a full sized one. Another benefit, small desk footprint. For years I resisted the influence of my programmer friend to move from a desktop to a laptop. Once I took his advice, I became a happy camper. For the record, laptops vs desktops of similar configurations win performance issues every time. Something to do about a shorter distance for the electrons to travel.

PS: I like the idea of taking my computer where-ever I go and being able to use it by un-packing just one bag containing only the computer and the power supply.

re: #695 WrathofG-d

Wrath, glad to see ya still here btw, I must disclose that I buiit and up-graded PC's for many people back to the days of the Atari 800. I hear your concerns about a choice in your next PC. I will not re-visit the points I made earlier but address your choices as if they were mine.
I will place your choices in quotes and then give my response.

PROCESSOR Intel®Pentium® dual-core processor E2160 (1MB L2,1.80GHz,800 FSB)

Meaning - 2X1.8ghz = 3.2 ghz processor speed with a 1 meg cache and a 800 mhz front side bus (the one that communicates with the the other computer components) Good choice.

OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows Vista® Home Basic

I would suggest the Vista Home Premium edition for the additional benefits it provides vs cost.

MONITOR:19 inch S199WFP Widescreen Digital Flat Panel Monitor with TrueLife

Good choice for a desktop machine.

MEMORY 1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz- 2DIMMs

I would suggest a minimum of 2 GB's of ram for the OS you will be running. I could get into the reasons for this but it would get technical and cause your eyes to glaze over. The fact that they mention it contains 2 Dimms may limit your up-grade ability since many motherboards contain only 2 Dimm slots. This configuration is using 2 512 meg Dimms.

OPTICAL DRIVE 16X DVD+/-RW Drive

Any machine purchased today should include a DVD+/RW drive

VIDEO CARD Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3100

I have no knowledge of this video card's abilities so I will not comment except that I always look for Nvidia cards.

KEYBOARD & MOUSE Logitech Cordless Desktop S 510 Keyboard and Mouse - Arctic Silver

You can never go wrong with Logitech and wireless rocks!

The remaining items in your list are similar to those offered by other vendors.

I hope I was helpful in your quest for a new machine, if not, oh well I tried.
