State Dept to Jimmy Carter: Don't Meet with Hamas

Thu, Apr 10, 2008 at 10:58:45 am PDT

You know Jimmy Carter’s gone a little too far when even the State Department disapproves: State Department: Carter should not meet Hamas chief.

It’s just pathetic he should even need to be told.

The US State Department said on Thursday it had advised ex-President Jimmy Carter against meeting the leader of Hamas in Syria next week, saying it went against US policy of isolating the group.

Carter has in recent days discussed with the State Department’s point person on Israeli-Palestinian issues, David Welch, his plans to meet Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal.

“We have counseled the former president about having such a meeting,” said State Department Spokesman Sean McCormack, adding the advice was not to go ahead with such talks.

“US government policy is that Hamas is a terrorist organization and we don’t believe it is in the interests of our policy or in the interests of peace to have such a meeting,” he told reporters when asked about Carter’s plans.

Earlier, Hamas official Ayman Taha told Reuters in Gaza of Carter’s planned meeting. “There is an agreement to hold the meeting and arrangements are underway,” he said. Taha said the meeting was to be held following a request from the Carter Center in Atlanta, whose goal is to promote global peace, health, democracy and human rights.

You know, Jimmah is up there on the list of worst presidents. He's really making a bid to be on the top of that list, or to start a new one: List of US Ex-presidents most likely to be charged with Treason or to be found dead in airstrike by US troops on suspected enemies of the United States.

Is there ANY former president who has gone so far as to wonder about the aid and abetting clause? Maybe some of the former presidents before the civil war? Buchanan or something?

Al-Jazeera Television said the Syria meeting could also include former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and former South African President Nelson Mandela, also a Nobel Peace Prize winner.

But Fred Eckhard, Annan's former spokesman at the United Nations, said Annan had no plans to accompany Carter to Damascus.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice spoke to Annan earlier this week about Hamas, said McCormack, who declined to provide details of the call.

"Secretary Annan is well aware of our position regarding Hamas as he was a former member of the quartet," said McCormack.

44 lawhawk  Thu, Apr 10, 2008 11:07:55am

So, what exactly does this tell us about the State Department. Did someone finally use a firing neuron to realize that a former President meeting with the current head of a terrorist group on the State Department watch list was a bad idea? That bad press could head their way? That Carter might attempt to subvert existing US foreign policy?

Carter apparently believes that he operates above and outside existing US foreign policy and diplomatic initiatives - despite the fact that the only person who can direct such things is the sitting President of the US at the time. Someone better wake Carter up to the fact that he's been out of office since January 1981.

Now, was his meeting originally approved by State and now they're giving him the *wink wink* *nod nod* *say no more* approach to go ahead with Carter's visit to Syria and if you happen to be in the same room with Meshaal, you can speak to him if you like? Seems like they didn't have a problem before, but with the bad press, they're opting for the latter.

I just wondered if any other president has ever gone that way, that's all. I doubt it.

This is all Bush's fault.

During his term as President, he has allowed the State Dept., CIA and the democratic Congress to run a shadow foreign policy by meeting with foreign leaders of terror supporting nations. I expect that 'President' McCain will also do nothing to curb the treasonous behavior of the above mentioned entities. I fully expect that the damage done to this nation will be the end of our current system and will usher in a greater world war with an entirely new paradigm of government and states being formed from the ashes of the current world order.

You know, if the State Department is looking for stuff to do, they could send someone to look into this report:

IRAN'S BUSTED IRAQ BID
BASRA 'RISING' WAS TEHRAN'S OP

April 10, 2008 -- A gamble that proved too costly.

That's how analysts in Tehran describe events last month in Basra. Iran's state-run media have de facto confirmed that this was no spontaneous "uprising." Rather, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) tried to seize control of Iraq's second-largest city using local Shiite

I have live in the USA for 35+ years, almost 30 of them in the South. I have never personally heard a Southerner say anything anti-semitic.
I include my father in this, who was born and raised in segregated Charleston, SC....a Southern Democrat, until he morphed into a conservative independent.
(The only things I ever heard him say about Jews were very
flattering.)
The first time that I personally heard anti-semitic remarks in this country was when I moved (briefly) to New Jersey. Being a post-WWII person, I was actually shocked by this. I heard similar things when I lived (again briefly) in the Midwest.
I am speaking here, of course, about ordinary, private discourse, not about the statements of public figures.
I do not wish to insinuate that NJ or the Midwest are especially anti-semitic, BTW. Could just be back luck for me. And in any case, all regions are complex, no?
I just wish YOU would not impugn Southerners so easily.

I think they State Department is just covering it's ass. The don't care if Carter meets with Hamas. Why should they care? They've been meeting with Hamas using Egypt as an intermediary for quite some time. State even has an Ambassador of sorts to Hamas- David Welch.
You better believe State approves of this meeting. It's in their DNA.

Republican Jewish Coalition Press Release~

RJC: Sen. Obama Must Reject Carter's Superdelegate Vote

Washington, D.C. (April 10, 2008) -- In light of former President Jimmy Carter's upcoming visit with Hamas leader Khaled Meshal in Syria, today the Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) called on Sen. Barack Obama to reject Carter's presumptive Democratic superdelegate vote.

On Tuesday, FOX News reported that President Carter was planning a visit to Syria where he would meet with Khaled Meshal, Hamas' leader residing in Damascus as a guest of Syria. Following that announcement, the Washington Post reported yesterday that the campaign of Sen. Barack Obama said the Illinois senator "does not agree with President Carter's decision to go forward with [the Khaled Meshal] meeting."

"We praise Senator Obama's decision to do the right thing and speak out against President Carter's misguided plans to visit with a murderous terrorist like Hamas leader Khaled Meshal," said RJC Executive Director Matt Brooks. "But the same hand that shakes Khaled Meshal's hand should not be allowed to rise in support of Senator Obama's candidacy for president. If President Carter meets with Hamas leader Khaled Meshal, it would send a terrible message to the Jewish community if Senator Obama were to accept President Carter's presumptive superdelegate vote. The right thing for Senator Obama to do is to reject President Carter's vote."

On April 3, the Associated Press reported that Carter "wouldn't quite say it, but he left little doubt this week about who he'd like to see in the White House next year." Additionally, the former president reportedly noted that Obama had won Carter's home state of Georgia, hometown of Plains and the support of Carter's wife, children and grandchildren.

A local moonbat was ragging on President Bush for allowing DST's implementation a month earlier than usual and claimed Bush is the worst president ever. When I asked him to compare Carter's Presidency, well...he'd rather have had Carter as president because Jimmy did a better job. Later he demonstrated his BDS by pleading to "the universe' not to let Bush run and get re-elected, again. I allowed that Bush can't run again, as he already served two terms, and the mb says..."He was selected, not elected!" I didn't bother to ask about 9-11.

Their telling Carter to stuff it is not inconsistent with the State Dept's behavior pattern.

Remember that Saudi Arabi, at this point, is against anything that empowers Hamas and Syria, as Hamas is in the Iranian orbit (as is Syria, where Mashaal hangs his keffiyeh).

That alone would be enough for the State Dept to frown on this trip.

Then, of course, there is the feeling at the State Dept that Carter is treading on their turf.

It has nothing to do with the State Dept 'getting smart' all of a sudden, in my opinion.

They remain Saudi whores.

re: #148 Maine's Michael

Carter apparently believes that he operates above and outside existing US foreign policy and diplomatic initiatives - despite the fact that the only person who can direct such things is the sitting President of the US at the time.

Even worse:

* Carter may be operating outside the law, which forbids
- aiding and abetting terrorist organisations (which Hamas has been designated)
- usurping administration negotiating powers. (For example, I believe the DOJ nearly prosecuted a resporter who publicly assumed a role of negotiator between Lebanise Islamists and the President Reagan.)

* Carter has done this foolishness before (N Korea) with disastrous consequences

* Several Presidents (I believe, Clinton, Bush 1, and Bush 2, maybe Reagan too) have quietly said Carter interferes with their conduct of foreign policy.

The anti-Semitic jerk belongs in jail.

157 TrueSoldier  Fri, Apr 11, 2008 1:22:32am

Everyone is missing the true reason for this visit. I can see the press release now........

this just in on CNN...
After Former President Carter's visit with the leader of Hamas to negotiate middle east peace (appease terrorists), he was able to win assurances from the freedom fighting group that they will no longer engage in cross border raids into Israel. With this new found peace in the middle east, that the Bush Administration could not accomplish, Former President Carter is negotiating with the Democratic party to nominate him as their candiadte due to his national security credentials.

What he is telling Hamas is help me get elected and I can do for you what I did for Iran back in the 70's and help you take care of that troubling little problem of democracy trying to bloom in Lebannon.
