State Dept to Jimmy Carter: Don't Meet with Hamas

Thu, Apr 10, 2008 at 10:58:45 am PDT

You know Jimmy Carter’s gone a little too far when even the State Department disapproves: State Department: Carter should not meet Hamas chief.

It’s just pathetic he should even need to be told.

The US State Department said on Thursday it had advised ex-President Jimmy Carter against meeting the leader of Hamas in Syria next week, saying it went against US policy of isolating the group.

Carter has in recent days discussed with the State Department’s point person on Israeli-Palestinian issues, David Welch, his plans to meet Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal.

“We have counseled the former president about having such a meeting,” said State Department Spokesman Sean McCormack, adding the advice was not to go ahead with such talks.

“US government policy is that Hamas is a terrorist organization and we don’t believe it is in the interests of our policy or in the interests of peace to have such a meeting,” he told reporters when asked about Carter’s plans.

Earlier, Hamas official Ayman Taha told Reuters in Gaza of Carter’s planned meeting. “There is an agreement to hold the meeting and arrangements are underway,” he said. Taha said the meeting was to be held following a request from the Carter Center in Atlanta, whose goal is to promote global peace, health, democracy and human rights.

You know, Jimmah is up there on the list of worst presidents. He's really making a bid to be on the top of that list, or to start a new one: List of US Ex-presidents most likely to be charged with Treason or to be found dead in airstrike by US troops on suspected enemies of the United States.

Is there ANY former president who has gone so far as to wonder about the aid and abetting clause? Maybe some of the former presidents before the civil war? Buchanan or something?

Al-Jazeera Television said the Syria meeting could also include former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and former South African President Nelson Mandela, also a Nobel Peace Prize winner.

But Fred Eckhard, Annan's former spokesman at the United Nations, said Annan had no plans to accompany Carter to Damascus.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice spoke to Annan earlier this week about Hamas, said McCormack, who declined to provide details of the call.

"Secretary Annan is well aware of our position regarding Hamas as he was a former member of the quartet," said McCormack.

That's how analysts in Tehran describe events last month in Basra. Iran's state-run media have de facto confirmed that this was no spontaneous "uprising." Rather, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) tried to seize control of Iraq's second-largest city using local Shiite

I have live in the USA for 35+ years, almost 30 of them in the South. I have never personally heard a Southerner say anything anti-semitic.
I include my father in this, who was born and raised in segregated Charleston, SC....a Southern Democrat, until he morphed into a conservative independent.
(The only things I ever heard him say about Jews were very
flattering.)
The first time that I personally heard anti-semitic remarks in this country was when I moved (briefly) to New Jersey. Being a post-WWII person, I was actually shocked by this. I heard similar things when I lived (again briefly) in the Midwest.
I am speaking here, of course, about ordinary, private discourse, not about the statements of public figures.
I do not wish to insinuate that NJ or the Midwest are especially anti-semitic, BTW. Could just be back luck for me. And in any case, all regions are complex, no?
I just wish YOU would not impugn Southerners so easily.

I think they State Department is just covering it's ass. The don't care if Carter meets with Hamas. Why should they care? They've been meeting with Hamas using Egypt as an intermediary for quite some time. State even has an Ambassador of sorts to Hamas- David Welch.
You better believe State approves of this meeting. It's in their DNA.

If my memory serves correct....
It was during the Carter years that the country
went from "Land of opportunity" to
a "Land of opportunists"!
Nothing he says or does surprises me anymore!
What a liberal moron!
Let him go....then yank his visa!

That's right! Put him on the "no fly" list. Is he taking Mr. Obama with him?

What is so wonderful about this is that Jimmy has Secret Service protection. Are the SS going to be together in Damascus with Mashal's Hamas goons?

Come to think of it, has anybody ever seen Carter and the Jew-eating rabbitt in the same room together at the same time?

hmm

Now there's a conspiracy band wagon I can jump onto w/ gusto!
Go for it, Shug!

Probably. They need to jerk his passport from him to prevent his ever leaving the country again.

No, they shouldn't let him back in.

What the Hell is wrong with you Jimmy?

Have you ever seen Khaled Mashaal in a tie? Of course not.

Oh, Jimmy. Didn't you get the memo.

We only support the "good" terrorists who wear ties- like Abbas.

We have counseled the former president....

Counseled is wayyyyyyyyyyy too passive. Bitch slapped: much more appropriate.

What if he changed his mind before the plane landed (because he log on to LGF and read the posts and came to his senses?)

Carter? Reading LGF? When Hell freezes over, buddy! :D :D :D :D

Unfortunately, that's not true...he is actually loved throughout much of the world.

He is only despised by a certain percentage of Americans and Israelis.

It is important to bear this in mind when weighing the phrase "world opinion."

Actually, I fully expect the events in the Book of Revelation to happen first, or maybe to be partly sparked off by this and thus happen concurrently with the above.

Actually, Jimmah occupies a very important position in U.S. history:

He's the only person standing between Bill Clinton and the title "Worst President of the 20th Century."

As an ex-president, I assume he has secret service protection? Are they going with him to Syria and to met with hamas?

Either way nobody will do anything. Nobody is willing to play hardball with this idiot and so he gets to keep doing idiot things that undermine US policy.

Oh wait! I forgot he's a Democrat so he knows better than anybody what to do! And that road he's paving with his good intentions is going to Heaven, not to Hell. Come on everybody support Jimmy! . . . NOT!

It would also be good to remove his vocal cords and remove all writing utensils from the state. And make sure his rooms are wrapped in rubber.
