An Outburst of Antisemitism in LA

Fri, Apr 11, 2008 at 9:41:10 am PDT

When Israeli-American Daphna Ziman was given the Tom Bradley Award for community service recently by the African-American fraternity Kappa Alpha Psi, keynote speaker Reverend Eric Lee reportedly launched into an antisemitic diatribe directed at her; Pajamas Media has the story in a video interview with Ms. Ziman: Reverend Eric Lee’s Anti-Semitism: A Personal Story [video]

After Ziman received her award, Reverend Lee, who is the President/CEO of the Los Angeles branch of Dr. King’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference, began his keynote speech. In the midst of this, after praising Malcolm X, he started staring directly at Ziman, according to an email she sent.

Ziman’s email states “[Lee] started talking about the African American children who are suffering because of the Jews that have featured them as rapists and murderers. He spoke of a Jewish Rabbi, and then corrected himself to say ‘What other kind of Rabbis are there, but Jews.’ He told how this Rabbi came to him to say that he would like to bring the AA [African-American] community and the Jewish community together. ‘NO, NO, NO!!!!’ he shouted into the crowd, ‘we are not going to come together. The Jews have made money on us in the music business and we are the entertainers, and they are economically enslaving us.’”

(An attempt to revive the “Black-Jewish Connection” is currently underway in Los Angeles, according to the L. A. Watts Times.)

Lee continued with his anti-Semitic diatribe, according to Ziman, at which time she could no longer tolerate it and left the room, where she broke into tears.

Most of the dignitaries had also left the room by the time of Lee’s speech but Assemblyman Mike Davis was still there. He told Ziman that he “did not hear” Lee’s words because he was engaged in another conversation. Mr. Davis did not return a call from Pajamas Media, seeking comment. Calls to organizers of the event were also not returned.

Media Masturbation

TODAY, the Newseum - a 250,000-square-foot homage to journalism that cost $450 million to build - opens on Pennsylvania Avenue, midway between the White House and the Capitol.

What's wrong with this picture?

Other than the (symbolic?) fact that the building's an architectural mishmash, it's this: There's no museum in the vicinity of the National Mall dedicated to our military.

Can't you see?

The Joos got a parade, so everyone has a parade.

The Joos got a museum, so everyone needs a museum.

Not that that has anything to do with this article.

Just a bit manic today.

Reverend Wright isn't a big enough man, a powerful enough preacher, to leave a "legacy." He is just another wanna-be trying to be the next Martin Luther King. Or Moses.

And maybe this is just what 'race relations" in the US need. You can only peer at things through rose colored glasses for just so long.

The thesis was that Jewish tailors, who still owned most of the clothing shops in Harlem from back when it was still a Jewish neighborhood, were purposely creating new fashion trends for zoot suits every few months in the late '40s, forcing jive cats like Malcolm Little to constantly have to shell out greebacks to keep up with the latest fashions.

People seriously believed that Jews were using zoot suit styles to enslave blacks.

Why do they hate what's good and decent? We're back to victimhood -it's everyone's fault but ours.

To be sure, the African Americans have legitimate beefs. But, when their leaders make like business consultants (there's no end to the money we can make by prolonging the problem) instead of leaders (like Bill Cosby) then we are going to continue to have race-related issues.

If so, it appears that no lessons were learned by todays so called "Civil Rights" leaders and preachers, and rather than MLK's dream, a place where people were judged by the content of their character, and not the color of their skin, it is a morass of race-card trumping and race baiting - and Hitler's favorite tactic - when all else fails, blame it on the Jews. Is it any wonder that most of popular culture black america seems under a curse... "They who bless thee, o Israel, I will bless, ... They who curse thee, o Israel, I will curse..."

I read about this yesterday, and followed a number of links on it. I find it curious that nobody else who was at that even is coming forward to either support or refute Ms. Ziman's account. The few people who were there and were quoted in the article claim they weren't paying attention to what Rev. Lee was saying. So the only people listening to him were Ms. Ziman and a few of her friends, right? Come on. This sounds like baloney.

If I had to bet, I'd say Ms. Ziman heard some real anti-Semitism from the Reverend. The non-blacks who were there are too cowardly to come forward because they don't want to be perceived as racist. The blacks who were there don't want to "dis" a fellow black.

The Jewish Journal, a notably left-wing local publication, didn't take a stand yesterday, in their initial reporting. They called it a "he-said-she-said" controversy. How about doing some real investigative reporting to find other witnesses who can vouch for one account or the other? If this were a white guy accused of spouting racist crap on a public lectern, he'd be guilty until proven innocent.

124 littleoldlady  Fri, Apr 11, 2008 10:32:02am

The thesis was that Jewish tailors, who still owned most of the clothing shops in Harlem from back when it was still a Jewish neighborhood, were purposely creating new fashion trends for zoot suits every few months in the late '40s, forcing jive cats like Malcolm Little to constantly have to shell out greebacks to keep up with the latest fashions.

People seriously believed that Jews were using zoot suit styles to enslave blacks.

Okay, I can see my first paragraph from my original post is pissing a lot of people off. I am trying to maintain some objective stance in this, even though I believe Ms. Ziman is not making this up. Maybe the Reverend really did make remarks that were misunderstood, although I find it hard to believe that Ms. Ziman would be brought to tears by anything other than outright, hostile anti-Semitism. My point is, where are the other witnesses? Where are the reporters trying to get to the bottom of this? It sounds to me like a lot of liberals, including those at the Jewish Journal, are going to give Rev. Lee a pass because he put forth the kind of apology everybody wants to hear. And yet, has he taken responsibility for his original remarks? Can we get some corroborating evidence on what those remarks were?

re: #59 pat

Apparently this is what passes for normal in the black community. It also goes a long way to explain the rash of black on everyone else hate crimes that are occurring throughout America.

No; this is what passes for normal in the diseased minds of haters. I (another "afrimerican") don't suffer from this HATE THE JEW illness.

Rev. Eric doesn't seem to understand that NO JEWS = NO JESUS CHRIST OF NAZARETH BORN IN BETHLEHEM FROM GALILEE(sp?). Then again, he's not following the doctrine of said "Son of God".

But oh, if the Christians are correct, what a reckoning there will be for Eric, Jerry, Jesse*, Al....

Note: Who ordained these clowns? My mother's husband had to go to school just to become a minister--I helped him study a few years ago. He's a licensed minister. It may just be that he's in a Baptist church, and I've never broached him on the subject; but I've never heard HATE THE JEWS from him.

Wright and Lee have congregations, so I guess they must have studied; but what about Jesse and Al?

= = =

As for Jesse: Born somewhere in Greenville, SC. Worked with MLK, aka the Good Doctor :). Has coalitions for Rainbow/PUSH.

Saw him a few years ago, protesting to keep my lackluster bus line financially solvent--and causing me, a bus rider, to be LATE FOR WORK. What was funny(aside from his weak "back of the bus" joke) was that some of the signs the protestors had whined about jobs: "EQUAL OPPORTUNITY | EQUAL JOBS".

The thing was, he boarded the bus--along with a local news crew--to mug for the cameras. This caused the bus to run late, and caused me and likely several other job commuters to be late.

As for the bus, the problem was that the bus line would have had to be shut down--costing bus riders jobs as they couldn't afford to commute otherwise. The bus line is for Charleston County(SC). People wanted a half-cent sales tax increase to fix the problem.

I was against it because most of it involved fiscal mismanagement by the company managing the bus line. I figured that if someone really wants to work, they would find other means of transit; at the time, I would call a cab and tighten my belt if I had to--I hate not working. Voted against it, but it passed.

= = =

And when I read the Bible, it said nothing about hating the children of Abraham. If anything, it said NOT to heap calumny and evil on said children.(Unless my understanding of "...he who blesses you shall be blessed, and he who curses you shall be cursed" is incorrect.)

God picked the Hebrews[all twelve tribes of Israel] for a reason. Condemn them at your peril.

= = =

I never liked ethnic labeling. I'm not a crayon(color); and the hyphenating (XXX-American) makes me think of the(colorful!) POWER RANGERS at their zenith. This country isn't perfect--but it is my home. I live here, and I like it here. I don't want it destroyed. I want my hard-earned money that I work for to go towards my needs and wants, and to any charity that *I* deem fit.

I understand how various systems work: political, scientific, religious; and if I don't know, I find out if it's important to me.

Someone put that as political policy, and I'd push for that man or woman to be president--I don't care if the person's a (non-socialist)Smurf.

Does that make me conservative?

Most of the dignitaries had also left the room by the time of Lee’s speech but Assemblyman Mike Davis was still there. He told Ziman that he “did not hear” Lee’s words because he was engaged in another conversation. Mr. Davis did not return a call from Pajamas Media, seeking comment. Calls to organizers of the event were also not returned.

The Obama excuse, I wasn't there, so it didn't happen. Funny, no politician EVER seems to be present when an embarrassing comment is made, especially when outright racism in involved. I guess all these racists give speeches only when the room is empty.

I read his apology yesterday. His apology makes me want to like him and believe him. That's why I'm trying to be objective, and getting a little grief on this board for it! ;)

But I just re-read Rev. Lee's apology. He doesn't address Ms. Ziman's concerns. He just issues a blanket apology.

I would have like to have seen something like this: "Ms. Ziman heard me say (blank). What I really said was (blank) and what I meant by it was . . . "

That's what I mean by taking responsibility. If Ms. Ziman heard him wrong, then I want to know what he actually did say. That's why some corroboration would be nice. I can't believe it wasn't videotaped, not even on a cell phone.

Maybe he was fishing to see if his sentiments would be accepted and finding they were not or he got some bad press, he apologized? Hard to accept. "I blame the Jews. Oh wait, sorry, I didn't mean that." ?!

As a Jew, this stuff is always terrifying and the reason, I'm sure, why she fled in tears. On the other hand, there's a part of me that says screw em. We've been here for 5700 years. They ain't beat us yet and they never will.

And even with all this bad blood from the Black community, Jews are STILL in the forefront of Black charities, particularly those in Africa, the Sudan and Darfur. We won't stop either.

How many Jewish charities does the Black community as a whole support?

194 wanumba  Fri, Apr 11, 2008 11:20:59am

Hey, glass half full folks.
Deep breath, let it out, relax.
This is useful.
The "Black" churches are going to be winnowed by all this. There is going to be a separation. The wheat from the chaff. Just like what happened, a number of people were appalled and left and apologized - even though they themselves by not saying such evil and removing themselves showed that they did not have to apologize for someone's else's behavior, but they did anyway 'cause they're decent people. Christians have a very real and profound sense of God's Chosen people and their role in history. True Christians understand that one does not take on Israel without taking on God Himself. It's a manifestation of rebellion against God.
There are traps everywhere, you avoid one and you fall into another - this case, the danger of condemning every Black church, and of course by extension, all Blacks for being anti-Jewish. That's not fair, either. Judge them by their fruit! We all have to be so careful we don't fall for another form of easy bigotry.

Regrettably, the winnowing will reveal that the false churches will remain much larger than the true churches. Again, deep breath, in-out, in-out. But, like the example of Elijah and the 300 prophets of Baal, well one guy trumped 300, because the one guy was worshipping a real God, not a block of rock.

A lot of this is the fault of the media...whether intentional or not.
Most Christian pastors, whatever their race or ethnicity, are just that....pastors preaching the Gospel to us sinners. A minority want worldly power....or just want media attention, and so they jump into the spotlight and get attention with extremist views. But these guys aren't "normal" at all.

My question to you guys is this: When will society react to what's going on?

When loons up in berkeley calls Israel the new nazi state, and call Jews bloodsuckers and whatnot, noone pays attention. After all it's berkeley.

If a Jewish person is assaulted for being a Jew, then call it an isolated incident, prosecute and move on.

If a muslim shoots three Jews for being Jews in Seattle, call it an isolated incident, prosecute, and move on.

If a reverend goes off on irrational blood libel, Jewish shadow government/world domination crackpot theories, call him a loon and move on?

If the UN installs an official that rants about Jews and Israel in a fashion Joseph Goebbels would be proud of, do we just shrug and call him silly?

If the moral and religious mentor of the potential POTUS spouts vitriolic, inflammatory, hatred of Jews, call him a loon and move on?

Are we going to have to see another kristallnacht before anyone does something? .. the world is getting absurd.

Because most successful blacks (by a huge percentage I'm sure) have achieved their success by working in/with/for companies and corporations that are not 100% black - or even 50% black. Which does not mean that there are no black racists outside of preachers, just that those blacks who are racists, not preachers and successful hide it better.

I agree with you. From what little I have read of Ms. Ziman, I can't believe she has a thin skin and is a crybaby at the slightest perceived offence. How could she, with what she's seen in her charity work in the inner-city? I'm a white gal who grew up in the inner-city, and I can tell you that you have to have a thick skin to cope with that stuff, much less try to fix it.

I also agree with Marjoriemoon in #190 that the Reverend may have been trying to float a trial balloon to see what he could get away with. As John McWhorter said on Dennis Prager's show the other day (talking about Obama's association with Rev. Wright's church) "It's a black thing." Well, the implications of McWhorter's comment disturbs me to no end. Professing hatred of whites and Jews shouldn't be dismissed as "a black thing." And it shouldn't be excused with a well-crafted apology. No white racist would be able to get away with this. Black racists shouldn't either.

There's a Hungarian bit of folklore that says if you want a cat to stay in a new home, swing it round by its tail in the new house. I never thought that would work, personally.

But the phrase, "swing a cat" refers to the cat-o-nine tails lash used for shipboard floggings. Thus, also, "letting the cat out of the bag."

230 yenta-fada  Fri, Apr 11, 2008 12:40:33pm

Real prejudice is such a strange animal. For example, most Muslims in the world have never MET a Jewish person. They are robots who have been taught to hate Jews from infancy. Then there are people who have met ONE Jewish person and liked them or didn't like them. Immediately the brain goes from the particular to the general; as in:
"I've met Jewish people and they're really nice." The opposite also applies. Somehow, magically each Jew has to represent worldwide Jewry. This sort of generalization occurs for other races/religions, et.al, but seems to be magnified for Jews.

I live in multicultural Canada and have worked for the Catholic School system (which is generally not allowed if you are not Catholic). One of the schools was primarily Polish and the school secretary who perceived I was friendly, told me she had never met a Jew. This is Toronto, not some little town. Immigrants come here and many do not ever operate outside their own community unless necessary. I did not, however, like the idea that I had to represent a larger Jewish community. This might be how black entertainers and public figures must feel. They may have a sense of being judged by their color, and therefore more responsible for their actions. I prefer the whole color-blind notion myself and if other people have a problem with that.....too bad.

Any moviegoer knows that portrayals of African Americans on film and commercial television are complimentary to the point of challenging credulity. There are proportionately far more African American doctors, mathematicians scientists on television than there are in real life. Whites in creative professions, especially thoise working in visual media, bend over backward to show blacks in good light.

Yenta, I hear ya. But with a name like yenta, I'm sure you're very friendly to everyone!

It's good to be a representative, however unfair or bizarre it may be. A few years back I had a neighbor that we were friendly with, not overtly social, but we would chat often. She would pop off with the N word now and again which always makes me step back. Not only am I personally offended by it, but Kike is always right behind it, and btw, I've never been wrong about that.

It didn't take her long to make an anti-Semitic comment... something about Jewing someone down at a yardsale. And yea, she knows I'm Jewish. But for people like this who grew up with these statements, they don't see it as offensive to anyone. It's just regular old talk. That's not a justification btw, but it's fact.

And yes, we still chatted. I walk my dog down that street so I couldn't avoid her (they've sinced moved). She had an 10 year old that I adored who loved our dog. For whatever prejudice this woman was imparting to her daughter, maybe that sweet girl will remember the nice Jewish lady who would give her cookies, let feed and walk our animals, helped make wedding bouquets for her dolls out of our yard flowers, and so on.... Well who knows what the effects will be.

Keep smiling :)

Oddly, I know Rev. Lee.

Personally, he's a nice man who appears to be completely out of his intellectual depth. He really doesn't know what he's talking about, and the reaction to his speech caught him off guard. He didn't expect it.

He should have. He's received a good swift kick in the pants, and there is no doubt that he feels it.

Sometimes it's best to accept a sincere apology, demand specific amends, and see what happens.

re: #253 Maine's Michael

Michael, Have desparately been trying to convince my wife to go and visit Israel, but she is scared shitless that she'll be blown up, etc.. Any tips, hints or other things that you might know of that I could use to undercut her resistance?

Well, you've ruined the whole damn thing.
I've been working up a great case of righteous indignation and moral outrage, then you come along and tell me Rev. Lee is a nice man?
I hate it when I've finally found a truly evil person to blame for all the injustices I perceive around me, only to find that the nemeses is just another person, like me, that has allowed his mouth to over power his brain.
Fine job there Mardukhai. Now I have to renew my search for the scape goat.

Sounds like a plan, ploome, but i must warn you. she's a crack shot (usually 97+/100) at the FBI range and a jealous Hispanic. Irony is that her family has Sephardic roots and didn't serve pork or shellfish, but she's scared stiff of going there. wanted to meet her there on R and R from Iraq, but she said no. Says she would consider visiting on a cruise (Holland America has a 24 hour layover in a port) but doesn't want to travel inland. I'd like a longer stay. Maybe, I can just nag her into it.

re: #144 Kosh's Shadow

I am. And the threats LGF covered yesterday didn't make me calmer, even if the guy who made them was a certifiable loony.

Don't get nervous, get prepared.

re: #230 yenta-fada

Real prejudice is such a strange animal. For example, most Muslims in the world have never MET a Jewish person. They are robots who have been taught to hate Jews from infancy. Then there are people who have met ONE Jewish person and liked them or didn't like them. Immediately the brain goes from the particular to the general; as in:
"I've met Jewish people and they're really nice." The opposite also applies. Somehow, magically each Jew has to represent worldwide Jewry. This sort of generalization occurs for other races/religions, et.al, but seems to be magnified for Jews.
.

The whole thing makes a lot more sense if one considers that the Devil himself is mixed up in this. He hates anything to do with God, and works throughout time to wreck what he can. So, if one perceives some peculiar theme to all this, one is right, there IS one. The competing theme is that Satan will not ever fully succeed in his wrecking, though he'll come harrowingly close at times. God's Chosen people are top on the list of targets, plus all women (for the audacity of just one in particular who obeyed God). What should we then think of a religion that has two major themes before all the others: blaming Jews and women for the ills of all mankind. Hmm. Curious.

C.S. Lewis in The Screwtape Letters has a demon comment that the image of the Devil in a red suit with horns and a tail is useful for it makes the concept of him seem cartoonish and thus preposterous, thus demons were to promote it, encouraging people to poo-poo any talk that the Devil is dangerous.

Thus, it is unbelievable that a Christian pastor would ever even dream of the comments that this man made, must less actually utter the words. Reverend Lee? As in revered? Pah! Phooey! He showed his total lack of indwelling of the Holy Spirit by blabbing evil against God's Chosen people who are part of God's eternal plan. People who genuinely fear God as in revere and respect and fear have a viceral recoiling from anything that smacks of disrespect to God. Hating, promoting bigotry against God's Chosen falls squarely into the category of disrespect of God. Know them by their fruit.
