The Uyghurs had a surprisingly large turnout. Their cause is not widely known in the U.S. — the Uyghurs are a Muslim minority group in far western China that want independence, or at least greater autonomy. China labels Uyghur separatists as Islamic terrorists, though it’s doubtful there’s any substance to the accusation.
Don't they all.
All your majorities belong to us!

I was intrigued by this guy’s sign and asked him if the swastikas were supposed to be the kind that are a Buddhist good luck symbol, since the color scheme seemed to suggest a Tibetan connection. Or, alternately were they, “y’know, the bad kind.” He looked a little puzzled and said “The bad kind,” then admitted he never knew they were ever used in any other context.

At one point a large contingent of China supporters decided to challenge the Tibet supporters head on. Waving communist Chinese flags and carrying Olympics placards, they plunged into the heart of enemy territory, shouting taunts and insults.

In an odd way this was the most disturbing protest I’d ever been to — because it thoroughly reconfigured the traditional political landscape. I’m no fan of the Chinese government, and for the most part sympathized with the causes of the protesters. Because of this I ended up on the same side as people whom I normally loathe — such as this guy, who I’ve seen many times at anti-Israel protest and who has more than once revealed himself to be an anti-Semite. And here I am, agreeing with him on Tibet. Very unnerving.

Mark Krikorian (at the corner) had an interesting point of view on the varied Tibet-supporters the other day:
"But does anyone think we'd be seeing all this commotion over Tibet in Paris and San Francisco if the ChiComs were still in their Maoist stage, sending educated people to work in the countryside and spouting all that revolutionary class struggle baloney? Of course not. It's only because China's in its Pinochet/Franco stage that lefty "world opinion" now has its knickers in a twist about their hip imaginary Tibetan friends, the monks of Shangri-la. If you're a Tibetan trying to free your country from the clutches of the gangster regime in Peking, you'll take your allies wherever you can find them. But the trendiness and superficiality of this "free Tibet" business, from people who couldn't recognize Tibet if they tripped over it in the street, is striking."

Wow. Great piece there. As much as I hate to say it, I can get behind almost all (except the one-man Kosovo protest) all the anti-China protests. And the great thing was, given that this was San Francisco, that none of them were nude --thank God.
Guess I'm a touch ambivalent here, though. I think that the '80 boycott of the Moscow summer games were right given the recent Afghan invasion by the USSR. What's going on in Tibet has been happening for more than 50's years and the recent crack-down by Beijing warrants stern condemnation and other actions - but not an Olympic boycott.
As for the Torch relay, I'm all for vociferous but respectful protests. Yell all you want from the sidelines, but why do you think it helps your cause to stop the relay. It's not like you're gonna stop the games from going ahead.
The world is going to see the real China when the games start. There is no way Beijing's security forces will be able to control all of the foreign press, unless the import North Korean contractors. And, not all of the foreign press will be sympathetic (thank God the Today show won't have Katie Couric over there!) You're going to get to see China - warts and all.

While Krikorian makes a good point, to compare Pinochet OR Franco with the Communist Chinese plutocrats who prop up North Korea's gulags is grotesque and ignorant.
Spain's Franco allowed the US to build military bases all over his damn country, and Hollywood types like Frank Sinatra and his beautiful wife lived and traveled in Franco's Spain for years.
How many Hollywood types live in China-supported North Korea's gulags?
Franco's latterday Spain was nothing like NorthKorea/China.

My kid and I are home sick -- and have been watching movies today. He turned on a Mel Gibson movie called "The Conspiriacy Theory". The open is Mel driving a cab spouting all the "theories" to his captive passengers. IN the Mel wide-eyed rant, they were put in their proper perspective.
How are you-all this morning and what are we talking about?
That's a good movie...until it turns out they are after him, LOL.

They abuse and murder their own people, treat the Koreans with utter contempt, kill religious minorities, aid the tyrants in North Korea and Sudan, sell cheap, lead-based crap to Western consumers (please note they won't buy their own toys for their own kids) and just basically act like big, ignorant thugs. How the US handled the torch relay was thoroughly disappointing. Altering the route, shortening it, and allowing the blue suits there was a disgrace. Some people went there for a once in a lifetime event to see the torch, and now they may never see it. Pathetic.
How France and England handled it was just as thoroughly disgusting. I don't care if you protest and pitch a shit fit. So long as you stay within certain boundaries. You do not have the right to attack the athletes bearing the torch. You do not have the right to try and put out the flame. That is pitiful.
I admire Japan for their stance of not allowing the blue suits to run alongside the torch. As they said: Protecting the torch is our job. I hope the Japanese will set the standard and show how it should be handled.
Before the debacle in SF and the Chinese dictating what the athletes can and cannot say, I was against a boycott. Now I'm not so sure. This may be a once in a lifetime event for the participating athletes, but so was it in the 80's when the US boycotted the Olympics in the Soviet Union, yet it was still boycotted.

Re: Uyghurs (pronounced "Wiggers')
They are a very interesting culture. Although Muslim they are a very sensual people. I was there during Ramadahn so the streets had a real party atmosphere after the sun went down with everybody breaking their fast. I'm not even so sure most of them were fasting during the day, I had the impression it was the tradition of breaking the fast at night was more important than the fast itself. Lots of street music and singing.
They also have a tradition that when a girl comes of age she gets her own room attached to the house with it's own entrance. This "courting house" is where male suitors come to visit. I asked a young Uyghur girl to sing me a song. After she finished I asked her what the song was about and she said it was a traditional girl's courting song. The lyrics were something like "I like your beauty and form, I want to invite you into my tent and beat you gently with my whip". She said this without blushing.
They're good people.

"And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."
Excuse me, but the folks who seem most bitter are the lefties/Democrats who want power at all costs, including talking down the economy, playing class warfare, and otherwise denigrate small town America unless they need votes, in which case pandering is what the commissars order.

I won't speculate about the various ethnic Chinese positions on China as valid/invalid - and it's a safe bet that the Tibetans are throughly disgusted w/Red China -- but the ridiculous Moonbat w/the Mao shirt I feel confident about: He is most likely 'for' 'saving' Tibet all while happily rooting "for" Commies. The closer to tax time the longer. Last year I did direct deposit and filed a few days before the deadline, about 3 weeks. Mailed checks this late up to six weeks.

I actually attended a Uyghur dinner recently (open to VIPs only!) From what I could tell most of them are basically MINOs -- Muslim in name only. The women wore western clothes and makeup. The men wore suits. No one said the word "Allah" all night.
It's actually a bit complicated, though, because there are Mongol Uyghurs and Turkic Uyghurs. The Mongol ones are even less religious. If there are any fundamentalist Uyghurs, it's probably the Turkic ones.

There's a very good post on the Uyghurs at the American Thinker today about the jihadist threat there.
A great deal of the info we have about the Uygurs is coming straight from the communist Chinese government. Who lie constantly. There are no journalists allowed in the area. China recently concocted a patently fake hijaking plot involving Uyghurs, who were all summarily executed -- they probably were activists who were framed.
I know there is some jihad activity with a small percentage of the Uyghurs, but I think it's overstated and exaggerated by the Chinese, to justify their police state there.

re: #186 Killgore Trout
See my #148. I had a very different experience. I was there for about 2-3 weeks and never saw a single burka. They are culturally very different from other Muslims. There have been attacks linked to Uyghur separatists but they are very rare. I'm sure the Ummah would love to see it turn into another Chechnya so I'd guess that there might be foreign jihadis sent in to stir things up.
I'm sure you know much more than I do about them, and it might just be that wherever there are Muslims, there are bound to be some jihadists. If it was a number of years ago that you traveled there, things might have become more radicalized since you were there. No doubt, there is foreign pressure to radicalize the Uyghurs as the article notes Saudi and Pakistani influence, including mosque building.
Concerning the burqa, the article quotes one guy who states:
According to Igor Rotar, a Central Asia correspondent for The Jamestown Foundation, Uyghurs "tend to be more zealous Muslims than their Central Asian neighbors. The majority of local, married women wear burqas, which is quite rare in Central Asia, and middle-aged men prefer to have beards."[
I'm not saying that you are wrong, but burqa wearing percentages can change quickly it seems. Maybe the author went to different areas than you. The article also quotes another guy whose view on their dress coincides with yours:
In direct contrast to this view, visiting Associated Press reporter, William Foreman, recently observed, "Most Uighurs practice a moderate form of Islam. The men wear ornate skullcaps, or "doppi," while most women favor head scarves but rarely cover their faces. Many can be seen dressed in tight skirts or stylish hip-hugging designer jeans and high heels."

Between what you and Killgore Trout have said, and what the article states, it appears that they're a mostly benign form of Muslims who the Taliban, Saudis, and others are trying to radicalize (of course) and whose radicalization the ChiComs exaggerate for their own purposes. It can get confusing as the end of the article has this paragraph:
We should ask: how much of the Uyghur separatist struggle has been co-opted by the Islamists and is being used to breed fellow travelers for the jihadist agenda? Who are victims -- the Uyghurs, China or both? Is it realistic for China to fear Islamic extremism, territorial expansion and the spread of insurgency to other aggrieved groups? Is China using the excuse of terrorism as an excuse for a crackdown on the Muslim Uyghurs or is China a victim of the extensive network of Islamic terrorist groups in Xinjiang and Central Asia? Have the Islamists joined forces with Uyghur separatists to capitalize on the struggle in Tibet? Is the West failing to differentiate between radical Islam and legitimate human rights grievances? Is China's "Strike Hard" policy serving to radicalize the Uyghurs and causing them to find common cause with the Islamists? Finally, how can the United States assist China in the mutual fight against global Islamic terrorism and, at the same time, successfully address issues of religious repression and civil rights?
It seems like the Uyghurs are mostly a good people with rotten bastards on both sides of them (radical Islamists and communist Chinese).

What I really wanted, however, was a stretcher and an ambulance. After I reached the torch, I was knocked to the ground twice and got scraped up pretty bad. I'm covered in bruises in scabs.

Wiggers?
You've got to be effen kidding me!
I heard them say the name themselves. It was closer to Wee-ger. About midway between Wee-ger and wigger, depending on the speaker. The Chinese Mandarin speakers all say wee-ger, though.

Probably because Taiwan is an industrialised capitalist country (evil) while Tibet is "primitive", "naturalistic", and exotic (good) in the eyes of lefties. Therefore, Tibet is more "deserving" of freedom.

Why doesn't Tawain get the same love as Tibet?
I mean, Tibet IS a part of China.

Every civilized society needs a pleasant little vice or two. ;)
I do believe that you are correct. A puritanical society like we see in a lot of Islam, breeds frustration.
But if you party a little, life is just fun.

It's also worth noting that they are an occupied territory. There's bound to be some resistance. I was in Tibet on the same trip. When I was buy a souvenir trinket the shop keeper slipped something in my bag when he was wrapping it up. I didn't think anything about it until later when I looked at it. It was a map detailing recent incidents of Tibetan resistance. There were bombings of government offices, sabotage of power stations and shootings of Chinese police. Even the Buddhists get violent.
Thanks for the information. You and zombie have changed my mind. The article seemed to be unsure about the Uyghurs, but leaned towards the view that they were getting radicalized. It sounds like they're probably just a beleaguered people under the heel of the Chinese, though there are some jihdists, which you'll find wherever there are Muslims, but not that many compared to other Muslim-majority areas.

I don't mind. Play it as it lays. I never revealed my gender to them -- they just assumed. Sometimes people say "she," other times "he." I won't correct them.

As I mentioned earlier I couldn't tell if their lack of Islamisation was due to government repression of religion or if it was their own cultural choice. They certainly have very un-Islamic cultural practices but we won't know for sure until the communist government gives up.

I can't tell how much sarcasm there is in Charles' post when he says "Tantrums," but I would hope he would side with the pro-democracy, those that link China with the slaughter of innocent people Sudan and Tibetan rights advocates, and not the Chinese government.

Wow. I feel sick looking at that photo.
This is the first protest essay where I feel glad that all these people are out with signs. I find it pathetic that China arranged for the torch to essentially run away from people, not through them.
I wish I was there to give the Chicoms the finger. They didn't run through Dallas, as far as I know.
They'd have gotten arrested by the cops, due to all the car arsons in Oak Cliff.

I realize the pro-Tibet protestors have more than their share of clowns but to call this a tantrum is wrong. This is different from all the anti-war protests Zombie has covered because the Tibetans have a legitimate greivance. China really did seize Tibet unlawfully, and it deliberately wants to get rid of Tibetan culture by brainwashing young Tibetans in school.

We definitely shot some of the same signs, especially around the Ferry Building, like the Kosovo guy, but they're not identical. Zombie's used some of my shots with permission in prior reports but not this one.
If you think two shots are actually identical please post links of an example.

Yeah, the first thing I noticed was no full-sized photos. That's part of what makes Zombietime so great! I hope you eventually put this report on Zombietime with the full-sized shots, it's not the same with the small ones. Small pics are a bit of a bummer, but the report was great as usual.

Zombie, you just keep going from strength to strength. Great report, and your comments this time are particularly insightful and funny.
I actually saw a small piece of this from a distance, as I work right near the Embarcadero. Glad you were on the scene to document the madness.
And just between us Lizards: does anyone think Moony would give a s**t about the Tibetans if Buddhism (in a watered-down, wimpy, Westernized flavor) wasn't to this generation of self-loathing Westerners what Hinduism was to the Sixties hippies? And if Mao was still in charge of China, rather than the US-friendly quasi-capitalists of today?

Charles,
I was present during some of this lunacy. I was in San Fran on business and took a "casual" stroll down to the Embarcadero area during the events. I had never seen so many CHICOM flags flying outside of Peking. I was struck by the contradiction, as Zombie pointed out, of the protesters who, except for the Tibetan exiles, normally are in league with the red Chinese. Craziness run amok!

After see the two over-sized stuffed Chinese Olympic mascot heads it clear that the tentacles of state sponsored propaganda are penetrating California and the USA in general.
Apparently, it is rather easy to influence the American public with a large enough “media consulting” company and some grease money.
I wonder how much state sponsored influence will be applied to the upcoming US elections – not a happy thought.
Shouldn’t some of our intelligence agencies be looking into how this influence/propaganda comes to our shores?

Great coverage from Zombie! Ironically enough, we caught the Olympic Torch relay in London entirely by accident a couple of days earlier. We were on vacation there and just happened to pick that day to be at the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square (we weren't paying any attention to the news). There were quite a few people in the square but figured it for tourists and went inside. After a couple of hours we decided to break for lunch and just as we got up from our table in the cafe', happened to glance out the windows (this was from the second floor) and saw the torch relay coming down the street. I felt sorry for the crowd as I don't think it was possible to even see the torch from ground level, as it was totally surrounded by Chinese guys in blue-and-white tracksuits, who were in turn surrounded by London cops in international-rescue-green reflective jackets. Unless the runner really held the torch up high, you weren't going to see a thing. Having watched the torch pass by beneath our window, we then exited and found ourselves in a sea of Chicom flags and a huge crowd, which made me extremely nervous. We quickly threaded our way along the front of the museum and found ourselves paced on the right by a group of people holding Tibetan flags and shouting, "Stop the violence in Tibet!" All I could think was, "Man, I wanta get out of here before the riot starts." There was a woman just to my right who was chanting at the tops of her lungs; on the news that night, I saw her again as they arrested her for charging the torch relay farther down from the square. Later on, as we checked the news, we saw that the torch was going to come to San Francisco on the day we were flying back into SFO ourselves. Much to our relief, the torch arrived hours before we did, although the traffic leaving the airport terminal was snarled as some lanes were closed off (for the return of the torch). Turned out we got out of there just before they shut down all traffic into and out of the airport. We were never so glad to be home!
