Carter: 'I've Been Meeting with Hamas Leaders for Years'

Sun, Apr 13, 2008 at 6:19:06 pm PDT

Jimmy Carter apparently intends to go ahead with his plan to meet Hamas thugazoid Khaled Meshaal where he’s hiding in Syria, despite the State Department’s admonition against it.

Yes, the State Department disapproved of an idea by Jimmy Carter. Imagine that.

Well, today Carter openly admitted he’s been sitting down for tea with the genocidal terror gang for years. Hey, no big deal. What’s everybody upset about?

The former president said he felt “quite at ease” about meeting Mashaal because Hamas is essential to a future peace with Israel. ...

Asked whether it was right to meet a group that has not renounced violence or recognized Israel, he said, “Well, you can’t always get prerequisites adopted by other people before you even talk to them.”

Pressure to drop the meeting has come from his own party. Democratic Reps. Artur Davis of Alabama, Shelley Berkley of Nevada, Adam Schiff of California and Adam Smith of Washington state wrote a letter to Carter saying the meeting could confer legitimacy on a group that embraces violence.

“I’ve been meeting with Hamas leaders for years,” Carter said.

Sympathy for Hamas can also be found on the left side of the blogosphere: Firedoglake - God Bless Jimmy Carter, the Best Friend Israel Ever Had.

JIMMY CARTER AND UNCONSCIOUS HATE

Manifest behavior is always the summation of competing wishes and inhibitions, most of which are unconscious. When someone makes a great show of his personal piety yet his manifest behavior is often damaging to others, it is worth wondering if he is expressing forbidden unconscious wishes in ways that are disguised and acceptable to himself. Jimmy Carter, our nation's worst ex-President, offers an excellent case in point.

Carter describes himself as a friend of Israel, only interested in Peace in the Middle East and the world. Yet he is now planning to meet with Khaled Meshal, one of the leaders of Hamas, an agent of genocide, in Damascus, the capital of a terror supporting and enabling state which oppresses its own people in ways that the left's fantasies of the Bush administration's tortures cannot even approach.

While many believe, and he grants copious evidence to support the belief, that Jimmy Carter is in part motivated by anti-Semitism, let us take him at his word that he is not an anti-Semite and is in fact motivated solely by a desire for peace and love. What are the implications of such a position?

First of all, it is an impossibility. The Pope correctly beatifies those few individuals who live lives of such virtue and selflessness that we can truly believe they are containers of minimal stores of hate. For the rest of us merely human, our reptilian brains (midbrian and hindbrain) are filled with aggression, hate, lust, rage, and all manner of emotions unacceptable to civilized men and women. As I have pointed out before, the input descending from the most recent parts of the brain, the neocortex, is predominantly inhibitory on the lower strata of roiling emotions. Much of the chore of remaining civilized has to do with modulating the expression of those emotions and the behaviors that they would motivate.

In Psychoanalytic terms, our defenses protect us (and others) not only from unacceptable ideas, but from the impulses that are ubiquitous and often insistent. We all find ways to express our unconscious wishes and feelings, but hopefully primarily do so in measured and acceptable ways.

The highest form of defense against such unacceptable wishes is through sublimation, ie finding a healthy pathway for gratification. As an example, all human beings contain sadistic impulses; most of us find ways to tame such impulses and direct them into productive pursuits.

The aggressive component can be channeled into the drive to be a successful athlete, lawyer, or businessman. The classic example in Medicine is the surgeon who channels his sadistic wishes to hurt people into the more acceptable form of cutting them open in order to cure their ailments.

When one, instead of recognizing and metabolizing his hatreds and aggressive drives, denies their existence, they continue to live on in the unconscious, empowered by the denial. The expression of such denied aggression can be seen in the Preacher who is "holier than thou" and takes great pleasure in condemning the sinner to eternal torment. Some will happily supply details of the unimaginable torments (easily imagined by the Preacher) of those unfortunate consigned to the Preacher's vision of Hell.

Another way of expressing such unacceptable impulses is via a third party. There are people who are particularly adept at stirring up others to rage. Radical Islamists are particularly talented in stirring up their followers into manic rage against those who they believe have threatened their religion. The Imams, of course, are men of peace representing the religion of peace, yet their followers commit egregious acts of violence and mayhem in their name. It requires learned academics and media people operating above their level of comprehension to explain how violence actually equates to peacefulness....cont.

Well this goes beyond the never used and often ignored Logan Act. People and businesses are charged and convicted all the time for meeting with terrorist organizations or financial transaction with state sponsors of terror. At the very least he should be questioned about where and when these meetings took place. In most countries Hamas is a recognized terrorist organization. If he provided assistance (financial or otherwise) to a terrorist organization that's a very clear violation of frequently enforced laws. Unless there's some sort of exemption for ex-government officials that I'm unaware of.

But your point of ex-President is well-taken. His "involvement" in world affairs since his Presidency is really quite embarrassing, meddlesome, and just plain wrong. No he wasn't.

...From 1 March to 8 October, Carter was preparing to become the engineering officer for the nuclear power plant to be placed in USS Seawolf (SSN 575), one of the first submarines to operate on atomic power. He assisted in setting up training for the enlisted men who would serve on Seawolf. During this time his father became very sick and died in July 1953. After his father's death in 1953, Carter resigned from the Navy to return to Georgia to manage the family interests. Carter was honorably discharged on 9 October 1953 at Headquarters, Third Naval District in New York City. On 7 December 1961, he transferred to the retired reserve with the rank of Lieutenant at his own request. ...

And becoming an engineering officer is a different job than a nuclear engineer.

Looks like it. Peanut's also been spouting terrorist talking points for years.

I think the way he works is, there is this big empty space between his ears, and any thought that comes into it (from the outside, obviously), he takes as his own. If he'd been meeting with people who are not terrorists for years, he'd be just as adamant about border security (or its lack) or the U of M Wolverines (or MSU Spartans), or how the little green men from Mars like to probe him (or they don't -- the little green men are a given, though). It's awfully empty in that head of Jimmah's. Any thought that finds its way there had got to be pretty lonely.

One aspect of the Camp David agreements was a US commitment not to recognize the PLO, but Carter made that promise and found a way to make that promise null and void immediately. It was a hard trade for Begin who saw territorial concessions to Egypt as necessary, but not desirable. He was in a sense ready to trade Sinai for Judea and Samaria and Gaza according to the text of 242 (this is the distinction of "territories v 'the territories'". No secret that the US gave something of an ultimatum to Israel, but then Carter was never the southern gentleman. He is a cunning and deceptive politician. In the end his arrogance led to his downfall to Reagan. So now he is cunning and vindicative.

From my read of the Wiki article, it seems like the War Powers Act is a blatant power grab by the Congress to usurp the presidential role of Commander of the military. Right?

Still doesn't answer my question about how you declare war, or define treason, against a non-governmental terrorist organization. It seems like terrorism falls into a logical gap if the Constitution and other laws merely recognize governments.

Did you see the Violent Gang and Terrorist File? What a hoot. They're taking names and info about potential terrorists (mostly homegrown cranks.)

The Violent Gang and Terrorist Organizations File (VGTOF) was designed to help law enforcement do just that. Implemented in October 1995 as a component of the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), it acts as a pointer system, identifying known members of violent gangs and terrorist organizations and facilitating the exchange of information. By alerting law enforcement officers to potentially dangerous subjects, the VGTOF enhances their safety. In short, the VGTOF provides every U.S. law enforcement agency access to valuable information on a growing crime problem that threatens the safety of officers and citizens in an increasing number of communities.

The VGTOF consists of two major classifications: the Group Reference Capability (GRC) and Group Member Capability (GMC). The GRC provides information on terrorist groups and gangs, while the GMC identifies individual members.

To be included in the VGTOF, terrorist groups and gangs must meet the definitions ascribed to them by NCIC.(3) Similarly, individuals must meet certain criteria, which positively identify them as members of a terrorist group or gang.(4) After verifying and documenting that these conditions have been met, law enforcement agencies can enter the appropriate data into the VGTOF.

A rare 'non-Carter' link from your Google above:

CAIRO, Egypt - A top U.S. Democratic congressman met a leading member of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, an outlawed opposition group, during a recent visit to the country, the Islamic fundamentalist group and U.S. officials said Saturday.
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer met with the Muslim Brotherhood’s parliament leader, Mohammed Saad el-Katatni, twice on Thursday — once at the parliament building and then at the home of the U.S. ambassador to Egypt, said Brotherhood spokesman Hamdi Hassan.

From my read of the Wiki article, it seems like the War Powers Act is a blatant power grab by the Congress to usurp the presidential role of Commander of the military. Right?

Call it a compromise to get the Vietnam war started against no one in particular.

Still doesn't answer my question about how you declare war, or define treason, against a non-governmental terrorist organization.

Theoretically, only Congress can formally declare war, the last time was December 11, 1941, against Germany and Italy. Every U.S. military action since has been "on the sly", wink wink, nudge nudge.

Carter is a self-loathing American. Obama should have directed his bitterness comments to Carter. I am reminded of this Stephen Crane poem:

In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
Who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said: "Is it good, friend?"
"It is bitter-bitter," he answered;
"But I like it
Because it is bitter,
And because it is my heart."

IIRC, Executive orders and regulations (whole 'nother legal underworld) have the same force of law as any Congressional law, unless Congress steps in and says otherwise.

/them secret Executive orders and signing statements, call the Judicial branch and let them sort it out, that's the way our system works

B-i-B-

I have it on very good authority that former Pres. Carter was MUCHO PISSED! when the April, 1980 rescue mission failed. Problem is - since then - it appears that he cannot conceive of the US Military completing a Successful Mission. At least he got one part right at the time. Former Pres. Carter began the fuller funding of the US Military before the Reagan Presidency, an act to which this day he is NOT given credit.

-S-

Carter became President on Jan. 20, 1977. He did NOTHING for the military, but CUT funding. I went in the US Navy in 1978. We were lucky to get 6 of our 22 aircraft in the air, because we had to cannibalize the other planes for parts to keep those 6 flying.
So because he POSSIBLY decided to increase defense spending months our embassy and our citizens were held hostage, and 8 months before President Reagan trounced him, I'm supposed to cut him some slack? I was there when it happened! Sorry, I'm not buying that bullshit!

I cant attest to that. I joined the Marines in Jan '78. The military was Carter's bastard child. By the time I got to my duty station in late '78 early '79 promotions were frozen, no pay raises, no budget for equipment. You think it was bad in the Navy... the Corps has always got the Navy's castoffs. And during Carter the Navy had nothing so you can imagine how little we had.
