The Wonderful World of LGF Tags

Mon, Apr 14, 2008 at 4:22:42 pm PDT

A new feature tonight: the Tag Storm, a massive page consisting of every LGF tag from my front page posts in “tag cloud” format, linked to our TagViewer. The recurring themes really ... uh ... stick out.

re: #55 buzzsawmonkey

Waiting for the Christian car burnings and protests demanding beheadings...

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

I don't think that was the guy's point -- that Christianity actually is violent. I think his point was that just about anything, even something as benign as Christianity, can be spliced and edited in a way that makes it seem centrally violent.

And to that point, I suppose he's right. Just about anything can be portrayed however a filmmaker wants. That doesn't negate the truth that radical Islam is, indeed, radical because it's violent. If there were a corresponding global movement of violent Christians on the rampage, we'd all say the same of them -- there's just no such thing.

MSM will vaunt it. It will be elevated as equivalent to FITNA; that we knuckledraggers aren't nuanced enough to understand because we're islamophobes.

Leftards that never see either will take MSM's word as gospel and thus the propaganda war is furthered in Islam's favor.

No, the old testament passages he used are historical events not standing orders for Christians and Jews to kill Amalekites.

In other words, I have read the Qur’an and know that Moslems do have standing orders to kill and convert everyone by force, a force they believe is righteous, Jews and Christians do not, so we would not say the same of them.

Interesting little vignette in today's BotW:

The Tech, student newspaper at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, tells the story of a kerfuffle at MIT's Sloan School of Management. It seems the Sloan Lesbian, Gay and Transgender Club, also known as Sloan LGBT, emailed to every student in the school an invitation to a December party.

One recipient took exception and wrote back (we have concealed the obscenity): "If you f---ing fags send me something like that once again or contact me in any other way, I swear you won't be able to study at Sloan for some time because you will spend it at resuscitation department. If this is what you want, go ahead."

The LGBTers complained to administrators, who called the police. An investigation, which included a psychological evaluation of the sender of the email, determined it was not a true threat. The institute's Committee on Discipline held a hearing in February and imposed a penalty short of suspension or expulsion. The punishment was not disclosed, but the Tech reports it likely was either a period of probation or "a letter in the student's file."

This was a threatening email, not an exercise in free speech, but it wasn't a true threat, so kicking the student out would have been an overreaction. All in all, the outcome was reasonable. Except for one thing: It is possible that the offending student got special treatment and would have been punished more harshly if . . . well, here's how the Tech describes the matter:

Raphael G., a Sloan LGBT member who asked not to be identified by his full name because not all his relatives know he is gay, has been in contact with the student since late January. Raphael, after meeting with the student, said, "from very early on, within 5 or 10 minutes [of the meeting's start, I] felt this person is not a threat to me or the LGBT community."

"The incident occurred due to a deeply rooted cultural belief, not reflective of innate homophobia," Raphael said.

Wouldn't innate homophobia be more deeply rooted than any cultural belief? In any case, from what culture does that "deeply rooted" belief come? Neither MIT nor Sloan LGBT will tell us. The Tech has posted a letter from the gay group, which quotes the original email in full--except for one proper noun:

I don't care what you do among yourselves, and I am not going to teach you how to live. But I feel seek [sic] when you are trying to promote it or offer to join your events. It is not a dancing club or something that I can just like or not. You may not know that but in [redacted] beating gays is encouraged by vast majority of people because they insult society and nature.

The [sic] is ours, but the [redacted] is LGBT's. What exactly is being redacted? The Tech reports that according to an LGBT official, "the student's name and nationality were removed" from the letter "to ensure that it wasn't a 'witch hunt' targeting the individual."

Must be one of those pesky Amish again.

I can't tell you that without knowing just what the bird looks like. There are a whole lot of different kinds of woodpeckers. Usually if you here them working on a live tree they are after bugs under the bark.

If you do not see any obvious damage on the tree - broken branches, funky leaves, that kind of thing then I wouldn't worry too much, though you might have a tree surgeon come look at it after it leafs out a bit.

We have a maple in the yard that the pilliateds have been working on for a while. Half down in spots, so this year it is going to have to finally go. Sad.

I gotta agree with GG on this. When you see woodpeckers around it's because the tree is probably rotted and bugs are infested in the rot. Hope it's not too close to the house. Insurance companies are getting tough on tree damage to homes where the homeowner had a clue that they were bad.

But there is one requirement that is not necessary here in the colonies: You have to be rich.

All hunting land is private, the preserve of the upper class and in some countries, noble class. In Britain it is called "Deer Stalking"

It looks like that's what they're working on in Illinois.

That science tag is still tiny. I'll have to work on that.

These tags are for front page posts only.

And that brings up something else I've been considering -- tags in the spinoff links. Right now, there's a single category, but tags would be an easy way to extend the usefulness.

re: #183 buzzsawmonkey

My suspicion is that it is an attempt to:

1) widen the categories so much so that the groups can claim to include damn near everybody

2) bring into the same tent a host of people who do not necessarily (or even necessarily) share the same concerns or interests.

As to "transgendered" that is frequently used to describe people who do not "identify" with their "biological gender." So when one of my students said that I listen "like a woman" rather than "like a man," that would be an indication of my "transgendered" status. (actually, it's because I'm a musician and sensitive to a wider range of pitch than most people) Again, the phrase is broadened to the point of near meaninglessness.

i'm not an arborist but I don't think you will get much real damage to the tree. Woodpeckers are hunting for tasty worms and grubs that might be infesting your tree. If it really annoys you, a BB gun at low power (like about two pumps) will do the trick with out killing 'em.

Yup - that hunting thing is one of the reasons we have always been richer by far than virtually anyone other than the nobility in England. Even the very poorest of us have always been able to eat all the meat we could drag home without being hung for it, while burning a King's ransom in firewood to stay warm of a winter, more than the King himself could afford to buy. On a homestead at least half the size of Sherwood Forest.

Well, you see, non-Progressive society is inherently racist, so there's no way to disprove racism by conventional, rational means. Don't bother trying not to be racist, because it's impossible for you not to be racist in this country run by scared white people.

Or something.

Seriously, I saw a prominent leftie poster on another website expound that idea once: We're ALL racist, even if we don't realize it. "We" being non-brown people, including the poster herself.

I'm going through a bird identifier right now but it's coming up yellow-bellied sapsucker. This bird is smaller and not so spotty-black-and-white. It's gray with a red crown, about the size of a cardinal.

Nuke the reefs!

What does a coral reef look like 50 years after being nuked? Not so bad, it seems. Coconuts growing on Bikini Atoll haven't fared so well, however.

Three islands of Bikini Atoll were vapourised by the Bravo hydrogen bomb in 1954, which shook islands 200 kilometres away. Instead of finding a bare underwater moonscape, ecologists who have dived it have given the 2-kilometre-wide crater a clean bill of health.

"It was fascinating – I’ve never seen corals growing like trees outside of the Marshall Islands," says Zoe Richards of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies in Australia.

Trimming it might actually have caused the problem in the first place. If the branches are not treated just so on the open cuts the tree can become infected. Here is a list of all the woodpeckers in the US. The "sapsucker" is not any less damaging than other woodpeckers, unfortunately.

re: #283 Blitherakt

Good neighbors, bad example of gun owners. I count five guys with fingers on the trigger, one that's pointing the gun at the camera with his finger probably on the trigger, and one guy with a finger on the trigger with the muzzle possibly at somebody's head.

My RSO probably would have shot me in self defense.

Well, as the Faith No More song goes: It's only funny until someone gets hurt...and then it's just hilarious!

I don't think he's quite pointing the gun at the guys head, though. These guys are clearly being playful, but I have a feeling they take it more seriously than the "Jackass, with guns" that the picture suggests.

re: #322 Noam Sayin'

I've seen pilliateds - roughly the size of an A-10, right? A friend of mine insists he's seen an ivory bill, but I think he's mistaken. I live in Minnesota - in the heart of Minneapolis. This is a boulevard tree the city planted when all the elm trees died in the 70s or 80s. This tree is probably about 25-30 years old or better.

That is pretty young for a maple. We've got maples up here that are well over 100. For that matter, if you go down to the Deerfield, Mass, area there are a couple of sycamores (part of the maple family) that were used as meeting places for treaties with the American Indians as early as 1700 or so. One of them is so big that the elementary school kids pretty regularly go out and see how many of them can join hands around the tree.

Probably your tree does not like all the pollution from living in the city and it probably was not trimmed correctly either. Usually best not to trim them at all if you can get away with it.

If you want an elm, they have revived the American Elm with resistance to Dutch Elm disease. The American Chestnut is also making a comeback. Raintree Nursery has both.

I think their argument is that GW is somehow affecting the ph of the coral reef water. Somehow acid rain is lowering the ph, is the argument iirc. They only measure the top inch or two of ocean water for their measurements. Junk science.

Koskidz: Serious question: Why is being a Marxist a bad thing?

....I can't help but think that too many leftists here are too quick to accept the right-wing talking point that being a Marxism is in of itself an authoritarian evil that must be avoided at all costs. While it is undeniable that many atrocities committed throughout history were committed in the name of self-purported Marxist regimes and/or Marxist movements, such a fact is not damning of Marxsim as an ideology itself. Why is it that the atrocities committed by Western imperialism and anti-communism over the centuries have largely been either ignored or disassociated from capitalism?

....calling it "evil" and demonizing anyone who professes to being a Marxist as "authoritarian" is wrong and also inaccurate. Marxism is perfectly compatible with democracy. It is also hypocritical to condemn Marxism as an evil blight on the face of the Earth while serving as an apologist for the evils perpretrated by capitalism's purported defenders do as the Pinochet and Franco apologists writing for the National Review often do. I suggest that those who call Marxism inherently totalitarian and violent because right-wing pundits tell them so read Marx's own writings and decide for yourself.

"You know how Jews treat the place where they live. Look at Israel; I was there," he said.

Meanwhile, for those who wish that science would trump faith, you were treated to breaking news about how the GOP is going to roll over and proffer new global warming initiatives that Bush seems willing to adopt. Never mind that the need for action to deal with man made carbon emissions has only a tenuous relationship to actual science, and that the climate models continue to be wrong (heck, they often get the 5 day forecasts wrong, to say nothing about long range forecasts). Despite this, it is an article of faith that the global warming nuts push for environmental and economic controls that will stifle the global economy and likely cause greater woes than we're seeing today. In fact, the global warming proponents pushed for biofuels from food stocks, which can only cause greater suffering around the world because more and more food is being mandated to be turned into fuel - a costly and disastrous policy that Bush himself signed into law mandating mandatory ethanol requirements in the US.

“It is of course very simple to imagine that some powerful, physically dominant individual, after first having caught the animal, the catches humans in order to have them catch animals; in a word, uses human beings as another naturally occurring condition for his reproduction (whereby his own labour reduces itself to ruling) like any other natural creature. Bur such a notion is stupid – correct as it may be from the standpoint of some particular given clan or commune – because it proceeds from the development of isolated individuals. But human beings become individuals only through the process of history. He appears originally as a species-being [gattungswesen], clan being, herd animal – although in no way whatever as a “political animal” in the political sense. Exchange is a chief means of this individuation [Vereinzelung]. It makes the herd-like existence superfluous and dissolves it.

Soon the matter [has] turned in such a way that as an individual he relates himself only to himself, while the means with which he posits himself as individual have become the making of his generality and commonness. In this community, the objective being of the individual as proprietor, say proprietor of land, is presupposed, and presupposed moreover under certain conditions which chain him to the community, or rather form a link in his chain. In Bourgeois society, the work e.g. stands there purely without objectivity, subjectively; but the thing which stands opposite him has now become the true community [Gemeinwesen], which he tries to make a meal of, and which makes a meal of him.”

Reminds me of an incident a few years ago here in Memphis. Someone I know mailed their regular (outlandish) payment to our local utility company (Memphis Light Gas and Water Division) with the check made out to Memphis Light Gas and Robbery Division. They cashed it.

I've worked in the check sorting before, at a place that received lots of checks... people get pleasure out of that stuff, and no one ever even sees it. Just get's put in the right stack, the bank even posted to the accounts.

Like wetting your pants in a dark suit...gives you a warm feeling but nobody notices.

Last year, many states had an extended due date because the 15th was a Sunday, Monday was Patriot's Day or other local holiday, and therefore the returns were due on the 17th. That isn't the case this year. Returns are due on the 15th, but you can get an automatic 6-month extension to file the return in many states.

The only catch - the extension is time to file, not an extension to pay the tax. You have to generally submit 90% of your estimated liability.

The IRS also has an extension policy.

No, we should restrict Al Gore and Leo DeCaprio's carbon emissions for a few years. Just to see how they like it. No cars (multiples each - even if they are Prius/hybrids - because it takes energy to make the vehicles, not to mention transport 'em to their final destination, and transport costs for the fuel used for them), one house each that doesn't qualify as a mansion, and only eating locally grown foods, etc.

You know - to see how it really works out for them.
