Wednesday Afternoon Open

Wed, Apr 16, 2008 at 1:59:17 pm PDT

An afternoon open thread, as we gird our lizardoid loins for tonight’s slugfest between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, at 8pm ET on ABC. (Anyone know whether it’s live on the west coast, at 5 pm? Can’t tell from the ABC web site, or EyeTV’s schedule.)

Beckham is Jewish.

Meanwhile, the pair recently decided to send their youngest son Cruz to an exclusive private nursery attached to a Jewish temple in Los Angeles.

David, 32, who has referred to himself as "half Jewish" and Posh, 33, met with staff last week to finalise arrangements.

A source told The Sun: "There's no plan for Cruz to be educated in the Jewish faith. It's just one of the best schools for young children in LA."

David's mother Sandra's family is Jewish but she doesn't practise and he has no known association with the religion apart from a Hebrew tattoo.

13 year corrects NASA's Math.

BERLIN (AFP) - A 13-year-old German schoolboy corrected NASA's estimates on the chances of an asteroid colliding with Earth, a German newspaper reported Tuesday, after spotting the boffins had miscalculated.

Nico Marquardt used telescopic findings from the Institute of Astrophysics in Potsdam (AIP) to calculate that there was a 1 in 450 chance that the Apophis asteroid will collide with Earth, the Potsdamer Neuerster Nachrichten reported.

NASA had previously estimated the chances at only 1 in 45,000 but told its sister organisation, the European Space Agency (ESA), that the young whizzkid had got it right.

Schoolboy's asteroid-strike sums are wrong

Widespread media reports claim that a German schoolboy has recalculated the likelihood of a deadly planet-smasher asteroid hitting the Earth, and found the catastrophe is enormously more likely than NASA thought. The boy's sums were said to have been checked by both NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA), and found to be correct.

There's only one problem with the story: the kid's sums are in fact wrong, NASA's are right, and the ESA swear blind they never said any different. An ESA spokesman in Germany told the Reg this morning: "A small boy did do these calculations, but he made a mistake... NASA's figures are correct."

Michelle Obama (Mrs. Arugula), the one who told poor G.E.D. ladies in ohio not to go into Mergers and Acquisitions but instead become scullery maids now wants us to know something important . . . She is still Jenny from the Block.

Thats right, after saying that they had to run for president NOW before they were in an orbit SO HIGH she couldn't remember what it was like to drop off suits at the dry cleaners and make Fois Gras using that cheap "Fois Gras Helper" mix she now wants you to know she's JUST FOLK. From South Chi-town and all that.

Obama himself even recounts that his Mom (Flighty Obama) used food stamps once, before he had friends like Tony Rezko who could get you "real estate at wholesale prices" .

Thank god they are just like us, thanks Barry, thanks Jenny - see all y'all at the barbeque.

Italian Fashionistas for Freedom & USA...Buy Italiano, Amici~

"....On the heels of Silvio Berlusconi’s victory as Italy’s prime minister, Santo Versace has secured a seat in the country’s Parliament, becoming a member of the State Chamber. "I am taking this very seriously," Versace told WWD. "I decided to run because I want to do something concrete for the future.”

The son of Italian tailors, Santo Versace is best known as the brother of Gianni Versace, fashion designer for the stars. When Gianni was murdered in 1997, Santo--a banker, economics expert, and former military officer--became president and co-CEO (with sister Donatella) of the extraordinary and exquisite fashion house. And according to the London Times, Versace "opted for the centre-right 'People of Liberty' alliance led by Mr Berlusconi because he shared the values it placed on education and meritocracy. 'My father always said problems could be solved with three words -- work, work and work.'"

Not only does Versace now have a seat in parliament, but WWD also reports that he may be up for a position in Berlusconi's cabinet. As they say on that fashion design reality show, that's fierce!

OT (if that's possible in an open item ...)

I have become horrified at how lousy Frontpage Magazine ([Link: www.frontpagemagazine.com...] is in PR and "customer" service. I complained way back at what I thought was just a screwup: the failure to post when the Islamofascism Awareness events were going on. Unbelievably, I have yet to receive a response email to my latest round of attempted contacts. In fact, I was even unable to find a way of signing in for a while, given some changes in their web site.

Charles (and any others): WHAT IS GOING ON with these guys? How can repeated emails to info@frontpagemag.com (via the web form) result in echo emails acknowledging my request with a 100% failure to follow up?

I was seriously thinking of trying to join that gang and help create and advance their agenda, as it is also my own. But now I'm thinking that David H. & the rest just are not to be taken seriously. How can a movement grow when it cannot absorb new members? Does one have to contribute 10k to get their attention?

Yeah, I had a look on Youtube and there are some great shots of just how quick a flashflood can arrive.

There are going to be the usual enquiries etc etc, but it certainly would have been an unusual event. I was actually monitoring the weather sats that day and it was pretty obvious to me that there was some big systems coming in. However, the outdoor centre that hosted the group took there weather report at 6.15am and based their decisions on that. It omitted the possibilities of thunderstorms. The metservice upgraded the report only 1/2 hour later, by which stage the groups had left....

I remember hearing George Will (who hates McCain-Feingold because of its free-speech restrictions) say that money is like water. You can re-direct the flow, but you can't stop it.

Hebrew tattoo dot net

If you are considering having Hebrew writing tattooed on your body, then the first thing that you must do, is to make sure that the Hebrew is correct and accurate and truly what you want. We can provide you with this service affordably and efficiently. In order to get tattooed you will need the lettering as well as the outline of the lettering to give to the tattoo artist, otherwise you will have to pay him/her to create the outline for you. We offer the exact matching outlines for our tattoo designs but if you just need a simple translation, we are able to provide that as well.

A small note to tonight's debaters.

You know you are losing when your opponent is setting the agenda.

And we in the VRWC are making Obama go for the flag pin and HRC toss back shots.

Next we are going to make you say the pledge of allegiance and go to a shooting range.

3) What caused the earth to cool between the 1940s and 1970s?

4) How can man specifically warm the earth?

It seems to me that there are a few simple questions regarding this issue:

1) What caused the ice age?
Man
2) What caused the ice age to end?
Man
3) What caused the earth to cool between the 1940s and 1970s?
Man
4) How can man specifically warm the earth?
Hummers
5) How can man specifically cool the earth?
Taxes
6) Does the sun have any effect on the earth's temperature?
Only during the day

7) What is the perfect global temperature?
72.6 F
8) If we cool the earth too much, how will we heat it back up?
Can't happen we are too smart for that

I thought that phrase came from his swashbuckling movies.

Origin

This phrase is commonly said to be a reference to Errol Flynn, the Australian film actor. Flynn was famous for his romantic swashbuckler roles in Hollywood films and for his flamboyant private life. His reputation as a hard-drinking, hell-raising ladies' man was apparently well justified, although it has doubtless been enhanced by his delight in playing up to his image.

Hey Y'all - drive by posting, but there's a link to a thread about Obama's 2007 tax returns in the spinoff links and there MUSTBE A MISTAKE! (Bet your surprised that the MSM could make a mistake, eh?!).
According to the story, the tax returns show he made $4,238,165 last year, most of it ($3.9 million) a result of profits from his book sales. But we know from prior years tax returns that he and Michelle file jointly. She earned between $300,000 and $350,000 from her employment at the U of Chicago; he made $250,000 as a US Senator. That should total something around $650,000 in addition to his book royalties of $3.9 mil. So the Obamas "earned" something closer to $4,550,00 not $4.2 Million.
And in 2006, according to their tax return, they made $1,570,000. Not bad, last year they earned $3,000,000 buckos MORE than they did the year before!
Ah, yeah, Obama - man of the People. Now we know why he wants CHANGE - a lot of places won't take $100 bills these days!

The Phakestinian calm "news reports" look just like militants.

I dont believe it...

Palestinian journalists carry the body of Reuters news agency cameraman Fadal Shana to the morgue of Shifa hospital in Gaza City, Wednesday, April 16, 2008. Shana died along with two bystanders after his car was hit while filming Israeli tank movements. Israel struck hard against targets in Gaza on Wednesday, killing at least 19 Palestinians in a day of heavy fighting that also saw three Israeli soldiers killed in a brazen Hamas ambush.
(AP Photo/Majed Hamdan)

Is Hamas copping some blame, here? surely not.

BTW, I see Shana sitll has watch on wrist. Must have been a cockroach

It would be fun if he had a bunch of American flags behind only him like when he gave his 'I ain't Wright' distancing speech.

I say Hillary mauls him tonight. She is more man than he is.

Wake me when it's over. In the undertaker sense of the word if necessary.

What no stream?

I'll get the AI results from the east coast in semi-realtime, come on ABC?!?!?

re: #470 WrathofG-d

Spraying propane into a diesel engine has about the same effect as NoS does on a normal gas engine.

...and I'm here to tell you that it can be more than a little disconcerting to watch a street legal 5-ton diesel pick-up with a dually rear axle turning 10 second passes at the drag strip.

Speaking of pandering...

Mayors and Wal-Mart Back Gun Sales Plan

A coalition of mayors in favor of gun control, led by Michael R. Bloomberg of New York and Thomas M. Menino of Boston, said on Monday that it had reached a 10-point agreement with Wal-Mart, the country’s largest seller of guns, to track the sale of firearms more closely.

While Wal-Mart may be the largest seller of guns, all they sell is long guns (rifles and shotguns), which are almost never used in crimes.

In other words, this whole thing is a scam, timed to match the anniversary of the VA Tech shooting (which was not carried out with a long gun, BTW).

The NAS is the UN of scientific consensus. And CO2 contribution by human factors and its implications is a hot debate, and not even close to consensus.

Flynn's problems were a lot worse than described here.

Arbuckle's scandal was largely an invention of the media, especially the more sensational of their assertions.

The debate isn't being carried live on ABC on the Front Range of Colorado.

Drink!

Supper tonight was charcoal grilled bratwurst on toasted whole wheat buns with sauerkraut, finely chopped onions, horseradish and brown mustard.

Now it's Miller Time with special guest Evan Williams.
