Tech Note: Database Backup Revamp Redux

Sat, Apr 19, 2008 at 1:15:06 pm PDT

This one’s going to get knee deep in geekspeak before you know it, so feel free to skip over and treat it as an open thread — my feelings won’t be hurt.

It’s all about the backups. You don’t know how important they are until some piece of critical hardware fails and destroys your data, and your only backup is 6 months old. Or you don’t even have a backup. If it’s already happened to you, you have no excuse when it happens again.

Our latest system is fully automated, and makes incremental backups of both the MySQL database and the web server that runs our LGF Blog Engine. The backups are transferred from these two servers to the local office machine, through the wonders of rsync over SSH; the web server is backed up every hour, and the MySQL database once a day. With Apple’s Time Machine backing up the local computer, we have archives going back months—a multi-level disaster recovery system, administered remotely through an ultra-secure connection. Oh yeah.

The database server is backed up less frequently because the backup has to be created first on the server. For maximum portability and ease of restoring, I’m using the mysqldump program to dump out SQL text files for each table in our main database. This process is in a shell script that runs as a daily cron job at low traffic times, because it can take a little while (about 5 minutes for the whole DB) and it uses server resources while dumping the tables.

The Unix rsync program, which runs on the local Mac, is just made for jobs like this; it does a smart incremental backup, and only transfers the changed sections of files—and even compresses them during the transfer. The hourly backup of the entire web server takes only a few seconds and hardly any server resources, because there aren’t many files that change frequently (and the ones that do are usually small).

On the local Mac, I decided to avoid using cron for two reasons: 1) Apple has deprecated it, in favor of their launchd utility, and 2) cron jobs run in a very limited shell environment, and don’t inherit the proper SSH variables, making rsync connections more difficult.

So I’m taking Apple’s advice and using two launchd agents instead, to call the rsync commands; one that runs every hour to back up the web server, and one that runs daily for the MySQL database. Launchd agents run in a full Unix environment, and if you have SSH keys set up for remote access you can use them in your agent. (A new feature of Leopard: built-in support for ssh-agent.)

Creating the launchd agent was simple; it’s an XML “plist” file, and you can either create it by hand if you’re manly enough, or use the free utility Lingon and save some time.

From the Eurostench thread, thought I'd re-post here for anyone thinking of sending a care-package to our soldiers:

re: #117 alegrias

Please remember our troops sweating away in stinky Iraq & Iran, doing the work many EUros won't do to save their own stinky behinds from radical jihadists.

Remember how Prince Harry said he hadn't showered for weeks while in Helmand Province, Afghanistan? If the Prince of England couldn't shower, imagine our own great people!

Hope we're sending lots of wipes & installing baths & showers in Olde Iraq, so new Iraq will be a top destination ally in future. Though Saddam's goldplated bathroom fixtures must be amazing.

Actually, baby wipes are a huge boon for our soldiers, they're worth their weight in gold. If you're putting together a care package, include LOTS of baby wipes. IIRC, it's the number one requested item.

What Charles did was to automate the collection of the old smoke. (Lord knows we blow enough of it around here!) So the next time the hamsters revolt all Stinky has to do is press a button and the offending hamsters will be smoked out and LGF will be back up and running in no time at all.

Great job Charles.

OT ::::: 5 pm on the East Coast .....So....

A CNN journalist heard about a very old Jewish man who had been going to the Western Wall to pray, twice a day, every day, for a long, long time.
So she went to check it out. She went to the Western Wall and there he was, walking slowly up to the holy site. She watched him pray, and after 45 minutes, when he turned to leave, using a cane and moving very slowly, she approached him for an interview :

'Pardon me, sir, I'm Rebecca Smith from CNN. What's your name?

'Morris Fishbien,' he replied.
'Sir, how long have you been coming to the Western Wall to pray?'

'For about 60 years.'

'60 years! That 's amazing! What do you pray for?'

'I pray for peace between Christians, Jews and Muslims. I pray for all
the wars and all the hatred to stop. I pray for all our children to grow up
safely as responsible adults, and to love their fellow man.'

'How do you feel after doing this for 60 years?'

'Like I'm talking to a fuckin' wall.'

HAPPY PASSOVER TO ALL OF THE JEWISH FAITH.

Charles,
Rsync is a great utility. I use it on my home network to backup folders on my linux and xp boxes to an external hard drive. Not quite as heavy duty as your requirements; it works for me. I have my backups scheduled with anacron on my trusty Ubuntu box which run the backup script once per week.
On my xp, I have a partitioned hard drive where my home users' MyDocuments folders are located just in case xp catches a nasty virus and I have to reinstall to C drive. [/End Geekspeak]

On a different technical subject, I don't normally pay much attention to web ads (there goes Google stock) let alone click on them, but the other day I noticed one of those LGF front page ads that was advertising a local concert here in St. Petersburg Florida, and did click on that one to see what it was.

Now I don't think people are going to pay LGF good money to advertise that worldwide, so I'm guessing that the ad script that Charles runs on the server has a lookup on the connected IP and targets relevant ads based on geographic location.

Would that be right?

On a different technical subject, I don't normally pay much attention to web ads (there goes Google stock) let alone click on them, but the other day I noticed one of those LGF front page ads that was advertising a local concert here in St. Petersburg Florida, and did click on that one to see what it was.

Now I don't think people are going to pay LGF good money to advertise that worldwide, so I'm guessing that the ad script that Charles runs on the server has a lookup on the connected IP and targets relevant ads based on geographic location.

Would that be right?

So Charles knows where we are, sort of.

Close, but not exactly. I don't determine which ads show up here -- that choice is made by the ad servers that display the ads. They're the ones that serve up different ads depending on IP address, or in the case of Amazon, your Amazon account cookies.

This Dietrich Reetz has to be very naive or just willfully ignorant to miss the causation between violence and Islam, particularly young Muslim men.
My guess is that he started with the premise that there was no relation between Islam & violence and then worked backward.
Academics have a very difficult time accepting any conclusion that does not fit their belief system.

The bulk herbs are the best. For .68 cents I got as much dried basil as you would pay $8+ for off the shelf. Milk is also about $1 less per gallon then any of the other stores around.

He seems so agenda driven, that passages from the Koran would not matter to him. My guess is that he would try to make some equivalence with the bible.

Political Science for Dummies

DEMOCRAT

You have two cows.
Your neighbor has none.
You feel guilty for being successful.

You push for higher taxes so the government can provide cows for everyone.

REPUBLICAN

You have two cows.
Your neighbor has none.
So?

SOCIALIST

You have two cows.
The government takes one and gives it to your neighbor.
You form a cooperative to tell him how to manage his cow.

COMMUNIST

You have two cows.
The government seizes both and provides you with milk.
You wait in line for hours to get it.
It is expensive and sour.

CAPITALISM, AMERICAN STYLE

You have two cows.
You sell one, buy a bull, and build a herd of cows.

BUREAUCRACY, AMERICAN STYLE

You have two cows.
Under the new farm program the government pays you to shoot one, milk the other, and then pours the milk down the drain.

AMERICAN CORPORATION

You have two cows.
You sell one, lease it back to yourself and do an IPO on the 2nd one.
You force the two cows to produce the milk of four cows. You are surprised when one cow drops dead. You spin an announcement to the analysts stating you have downsized and are reducing expenses.
Your stock goes up.

FRENCH CORPORATION

You have two cows.
You go on strike because you want three cows.
You go to lunch and drink wine.
Life is good.

JAPANESE CORPORATION

You have two cows.
You redesign them so they are one-tenth the size of an ordinary cow and produce twenty times the milk.
They learn to travel on unbelievably crowded trains.
Most are at the top of their class at cow school.

GERMAN CORPORATION

You have two cows.
You engineer them so they are all blond, drink lots of beer, give excellent quality milk, and run a hundred miles an hour.
Unfortunately they also demand 13 weeks of vacation per year.

ITALIAN CORPORATION

You have two cows but you don't know where they are.
You break for lunch.
Life is good.

RUSSIAN CORPORATION

You have two cows.
You have some vodka.
You count them and learn you have five cows.
You have some more vodka.
You count them again and learn you have 42 cows.
The Mafia shows up and takes over however many cows you really have.

TALIBAN CORPORATION

You have all the cows in Afghanistan, which are two.
You don't milk them because you cannot touch any creature's private parts.
You get a $40 million grant from the US government to find alternatives to milk production but use the money to buy weapons.

IRAQI CORPORATION

You have two cows.
They go into hiding.
They send radio tapes of their mooing.

POLISH CORPORATION

You have two bulls.
Employees are regularly maimed and killed attempting to milk them.

BELGIAN CORPORATION

You have one cow.
The cow is schizophrenic.
Sometimes the cow thinks he's French, other times he's Flemish.
The Flemish cow won't share with the French cow.
The French cow wants control of the Flemish cow's milk.
The cow asks permission to be cut in half.
The cow dies happy.

FLORIDA CORPORATION

You have a black cow and a brown cow.
Everyone votes for the best looking one.
Some of the people who actually like the brown one best accidentally vote for the black one.
Some people vote for both.
Some people vote for neither.
Some people can't figure out how to vote at all.
Finally, a bunch of guys from out-of-state tell you which one you think is the best-looking cow.

CALIFORNIA CORPORATION

You have millions of cows.
They make real California cheese.
Only five speak English.
Most are illegal.
Arnold likes the ones with the big udders.

The afternoon Jesus H Christ report

A Russian capsule carrying South Korea's first astronaut touched down 260 miles off target in northern Kazakhstan on Saturday after hurtling through the atmosphere in a bone-jarring descent from the international space station.

Officials said the craft followed a so-called "ballistic re-entry" — a very steep trajectory that subjects the crew to extreme physical force. Lyndin said the crew had experienced gravitational forces up to 10 times those on Earth during the 3 1/2 hour descent.

what G's do the shuttle astronauts feel ? Nothing like 8.5 G's

Not sure on the Shuttle, Shepard hit 11 on his flight.

G-suits and training, 9G in BRIEFLY in fighters is common. The capsule where they lie on their back more is fairly easy.

re: #79 Naso Tang

On a different technical subject, I don't normally pay much attention to web ads (there goes Google stock) let alone click on them, but the other day I noticed one of those LGF front page ads that was advertising a local concert here in St. Petersburg Florida, and did click on that one to see what it was.

Now I don't think people are going to pay LGF good money to advertise that worldwide, so I'm guessing that the ad script that Charles runs on the server has a lookup on the connected IP and targets relevant ads based on geographic location.

Would that be right?

When I access the Weather Channel, I get ads that are for the state and city where my ISP is located. I'm somewhere else.

re: #79 Naso Tang
I think those are the google ads. Google has a cookie that records your search terms and those ads are catered to terms you've searched.

I have never searched for concerts in St. Petersburg, or anywhere. I don't think there is any way Google knows I'm on LGF. This was a front page LGF ad.

I was hoping Charles would explain/confirm further.

re: #138 Charles

Close, but not exactly. I don't determine which ads show up here -- that choice is made by the ad servers that display the ads. They're the ones that serve up different ads depending on IP address, or in the case of Amazon, your Amazon account cookies.

Ooops. Sorry, I didn't see your reply in my late return to the thread. Dinner and all that.

But, and excuse my technical naivety, they can only get the IP from LGF, since that is where I went, not Amazon or wherever.

So you allow them access to your server to get the IP, right?

No, that's not how it works. Every time your browser requests a page element, it sends your IP address and other information with the request. Since the ads are being served from places like "ads.doubleclick.net", your browser sends your IP address to them along with the request, and their server determines how to respond.

They don't need to have any access to our server, other than me putting the code in our pages to show the ads.

Charles, have you thought about using MySQL's replication capabilities? You set up a second box running a MySQL server as a replication slave and it gets updated right along with the primary server. That way you have a hot copy running all the time ( down side: any errors in the data get replicated too ). That mysqldump is going to just be getting bigger and slower as you pass a gazillion comments. You can also use the replication slave to handle some of the record serving chores ( but not updates or inserts ), although I've never done that personally.

Yes, I have considered replication, but the nice thing about this solution is that I get such incredible flexibility by having so many levels of backup.

You're right, the mysqldump files will only get bigger, but since it's dumping to a file on the same machine it goes pretty fast and shouldn't be a problem for a long time. There's plenty of hard drive space on the server too.

I've also optimized the backup script to only dump table structure (not data) for a lot of the tables where the data isn't vital, like the logging tables and the session tables.

That's good. The nice thing about MySQL, you can scale as far as you want when you want. Maybe someday you can step into a MySQL cluster if you need to. Now that they are owned by Sun I'm hoping for more good things from them.

So, the code in your pages accesses my cookies, which presumably have my geographical IP, and then initiates a new page request to the advertiser with that information, and pulls in the ad, which is why the ads pop up after the main LGF page.

Apple's Time Machine saved my bacon just last month, had an original equipment IBM hard disk that decided to just plain up and die all of a sudden.

Bought a new hard disk, inserted into the Mac and booted with the Mac OS X Leopard DVD. Partitioned the disk using disk utility and selected the "Restore from Backup" option and it found the external Time Machine firewire drive and re-installed the OS and restored everything from backup. I lost nothing but a few hours to go buy the drive and wait for the restore to occur. If I had the drive on hand, the down time would have been 2.5 hours!

Checking in from a wi fi coffee stop in Pacific Grove CA., a place with more churches than bars. Lovely day, a bit windy, and blowing sand with whitecaps at the beach. If you smile a lot (as I do) then you get grit in your teeth.

The only thing worse than not having a back-up is -- believing -- that you have a back-up, only to discover (after a fubar moment) that the back-up is "corrupted." And un-usable...(Since around 1998 I no longer use compression software to do back-ups...)
