So much for the science fest....

I had a college professor who claimed that there was no music written since the 18th century. He was jesting of course.... but for him the death of Mozart meant the end of real music...

To quote Harry S. Truman, if you can't stand the heat, stat out of the kitchen.

The usual LGF know-it-alls basically said if you don't agree with us, you're stupid.

Some more Sunday music... Earth Wind and Fire

Devotion

Through devotion, blessed are the children
Praise the teacher, that brings true love to many
your devotion, opens all life`s treasures
and deliverance, from the fruits of evil.
So our mission, to bring a melody,
ringin` voices sing sweet harmony

For you here`s a song, to make your day brighter.
One that will last, you long thru troubled days.
Giving your heart the light to brighten.
All of the dark that falls in your way
You need devotion. bless the children
deliverance from the fruits of evil

In everyone`s life, there`s a need to be happy.
Let the sun shine, a smile your way.
Open your heart, feel a touch of devotion.
Maybe this song, will help uplift your day.

Make a better way
You need devotion

Besides, Charles was/is a professional musician for many years. You might not like his music, but that doesn't mean it sucks. I do consider him an expert.

I don't like everything he suggests or links to, but a lot of it is by artists I've never heard of, and if he (or anyone else) links to something that's good, that's great.

Ever see Johnny Winter turn sideways?

No! Me neither. He's so thin that he disappears and all you see is a guitar hanging in mid air.

But the sound....who was it that said he played too many notes? I never thought so. Ah, those were the days. I feel sorry for kids today. Especially there's an entire generation who know nothing about music except rap and hip hop...unbelievable.

Affinity or dislike for some types of music is like men's taste and women and women's taste in men. It's subjective. Consider that this thread may not be about amusement.

Charles may be trying to tell us something in following the highly contentious Stein thread with a music appreciation thread. The selections themselves may reflect a deeper thought process than random search.

187 MandyManners  Sun, Apr 20, 2008 5:41:56pm

LONDON — They had rehearsed the piece only once, but already the musicians at the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra were suffering. Their ears were ringing. Heads throbbed.

Tests showed that the average noise level in the orchestra during the piece, “State of Siege,” by the composer Dror Feiler, was 97.4 decibels, just below the level of a pneumatic drill and a violation of new European noise-at-work limits. Playing more softly or wearing noise-muffling headphones were rejected as unworkable.

So instead of having its world premiere on April 4, the piece was dropped. “I had no choice,” said Trygve Nordwall, the orchestra’s manager. “The decision was not made artistically; it was made for the protection of the players.”

The cancellation is, so far, probably the most extreme consequence of the new law, which requires employers in Europe to limit workers’ exposure to potentially damaging noise and which took effect for the entertainment industry this month.

But across Europe, musicians are being asked to wear decibel-measuring devices and to sit behind see-through antinoise screens. Companies are altering their repertories. And conductors are reconsidering the definition of “fortissimo.”

Alan Garner, an oboist and English horn player who is the chairman of the players’ committee at the Royal Opera House, said that he and his colleagues had been told that they would have to wear earplugs during entire three-hour rehearsals and performances.

“It’s like saying to a racing-car driver that they have to wear a blindfold,” he said.

The full skirt is bronze organza over a silk underskirt--terrific swooshing! The bodice is a floral print with sequins. It's the kind of dress that can only be worn to a gala or ball; otherwise, it's just too much.

I've worn it just twice before. At the risk of being takcy (but I know I'm among friends), it cost more than my wedding dress, but I least I've gotten more wear out of it!

Especially the doubtful possessive form of "suck".

It annoys me when people put apostrophes on verbs or on nouns when they intend the plural rather than the possessive.

Blazer in RIC, with respect, don't put apostrophes on verbs at all, and only put them on nouns to show possession, NOT to make them plural.

Yes, I see CFLs as being a transitional technology, like hybrid cars. Using filters to change the color temperature of the LEDs is the trick (so that you can have warm white, instead of the pure white or bluish-white of LEDs.

Thank you very much for you kind worlds. Believe it or not, it wasn't the breaking of the vows that hurt the most; it was his refusal to commit to repairing our marriage that did. I guess he wanted the freedom and mistress more than his honor and his wife and kids.

Cool Not seeing many of them in store here in TX yet. I did buy some LED night light bulbs (1.7w) recently, but haven't tried them yet. The thing I like about LEDs is the fast startup, and the fact that they don't generate the kind of heat that even CFLs do.

291 Afterimage  Mon, Apr 21, 2008 2:08:54am

It's cool to see a few other Dead Can Dance fans here. For those that aren't aware their albums have been remastered and will be released in the near future. Audiophile label Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs did the remastering and they've already sent the masters to Japan where they're in the process of being replicated now. They'll be available as hybrid Super Audio CDs (meaning they'll also play in regular cd players) on June 2nd. Those will be mini-LP style sleeves with full repro's of the original artwork. Later in August the remastered cd's will be released and those will be in super jewel cases. For audiphiles like me this is a dream come true. The regular CDs sound great anyway but to have them available on the hi-res SACD format should be nothing short of incredible.

They're available for preorder at Elusivedisc.com: [Link: www.elusivedisc.com...]
