Pathetic United Nations Story of the Day

Tue, Apr 22, 2008 at 11:29:01 am PDT

Hizballah is rebuilding and rearming in Lebanon at a frightening rate, and United Nations “peacekeepers” just run away when they stumble across the terrorists smuggling weapons: UNIFIL finds Hezbollah arms; gunmen scatter peacekeepers.

To make it worse, the UN apparently buried the story, giving it only a brief mention in a larger report.

Armed Hezbollah militants warded off members of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) last month when the peacekeepers discovered a truck carrying weapons and ammunition belonging to the Lebanon-based guerilla group.

The incident was referred to briefly in a semi-yearly report submitted to the UN Security Council by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon. The incident was the first time that UNIFIL forces were confronted by armed Hezbollah men south of Lebanon’s Litani River, an area which Security Council resolution 1701 prohibits Hezbollah from entering.

According to a government source in Jerusalem, the incident caused great embarrassment for UNIFIL. The source described the incident, explaining that UNIFIL troops on patrol discovered the truck and chased it down and pulled it over. When the UNIFIL troops approached the vehicle, the source said, armed Hezbollah men exited the truck and threatened the troops at gunpoint. The UNIFIL patrol then went back into their cars, according to the source, and returned to their base.

The report submitted to the Security Council said the incident occurred on the night between the 30 and 31 of March. “This serious violation of the UN resolution raises concerns,” the report said.

The incident was not reported in the media at the time of its occurrence.

I think Britney Spears was doing something very important around that time.

"Armed Hezbollah militants warded off members of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL)"

I wonder if Hezbollah used that most dreaded of weapons - the sternly worded letter - to "ward off" UNIFIL. If they did, do you think they escalated things a bit by using the TimesRoman font?

Very intimidating, indeed.

That's not the worst of it. The left in Israel, including Olmert, think that the UN and UNIFIL is their best defense against Hizbullah. They're the ones who decided that instead of unleashing the full force of the IDF against Hizbullah from the outset of the August war, that they'd waffle and piddle away the initiative until everyone realized that the UN and the US were going to tell Israel to back off.

And I'm not alone in thinking that Israel may be facing a multifront war come the summer. With Hizbullah back up to full strength, and Hamas probing the border with Israel from Gaza, it's only a matter of time because Israel refuses to take the fight to the terror masters themselves.

re: #44 jpfletcher

Yes. All true, and the most recent UN SCR 1701 on UNIFIL requires that it disarm all militias operating in Lebanon. That means Hizbullah. Yet, Hizbullah gets a pass - and the Lebanese government doesn't have to power to take on the terrorist group on its own. So, Syria and Iran continue to meddle in Lebanese affairs via their proxy.

That and the ICC has been trying to backdoor us out of our sovereinty
for some time now with no apologies.

Why would they apologize for promoting their only serious goal?

Fuck the UN. Kick them out on their corrupt asses. Let the Chinese fund them, they have more influence there than we do anyway.
BTW, I think John McCain might feel the same way.

armed Hezbollah men exited the truck and threatened the troops at gunpoint. The UNIFIL patrol then went back into their cars, according to the source, and returned to their base.

This report is leaving out the crucial pants-wetting detail.

Obviously were not truly ready for a "unified nations" Not when some nations are given more rights than others. Time to disband the UN completely.

Sounds like a new job for Jimmah Carter, head of UNFIL.

Jimmah:"
Clearly the terroists had a longstanding and legitimate national right to the contents of the car trunk, which western powers and pro-zionists have failed to acknowledge. The terrorists were in fact willing to compromise, moving the weapons into the passenger compartment, resulting in the correct action of the peacekeepers in allowing these understandably upset car occupants with legitimate national aspirations to proceed through. They have a constitutional right to a car swarm as well, if the Israelis happen to find the car and... "

Jimmah would be a natural!

Basically it was supposed to avoid a world war. IMHO nuclear weapons did that, war deaths in the 45 years after Hiroshima compared 45 years before dropped by 5x. Some would credit the UN, but what did it do exactly, nothing I can see.

The UN's not totally useless. Remember, they did say that they're perfectly willing to fire on Israeli aircraft. That seems like kind of a hollow, perhaps laughable idea now but they did say.

Very intimidating, indeed.

TimesRoman? Get real, the official font of the UN is ComicSans.

162 Ackomanyuki  Tue, Apr 22, 2008 3:18:31pm

The UNIFIL troops have to look the other way with Hezb 'u' llah. If they drew down on them and tried stopping them, their headqurters would be truck bombed the next day, and they would then have to withdraw due to the outcry from participating militaries citizens over the mispent adventure and carnage of their sons. This gravely illustrate show how irrelevant the UN, and diplomacy really is, and we can't have that now could we.

166 nyc redneck  Tue, Apr 22, 2008 4:56:23pm

these u.n. "peace keepers" don't have a stake in the countries they patrol. they are u.n. "workers." they're not going to risk their lives to do the right thing in a place they don't care abt. it's absurd to even have these blue helmets anywhere. they often just end up taking advantage of the local population, ie like those jerks did in africa who were raping women and children.
they are a bad idea coming from a bad organization that is unable to see reality.

169 mich-again  Tue, Apr 22, 2008 6:50:07pm

I check the UN site just about every day looking for updates from the UNIFIL mission. They never mentioned the story there either and still don't see reason to tell anyone about it.

At this point they are more a hindrance to Israel's protection seeing as they do nothing to prevent Hexbollah from refortifying their positions and no doubt that when Nasrallah orders more attacks they will come from the shadows of UNIFIL watchtowers in the hope that return fire endangers the peacekeepers/human shields. The blue bonnets should all just go back home to whatever craphole country they came from and let Israeli drones patrol the area.

Here you can see the Palestinian delegate to the United Nations General Assembly chewing gum while the Pope talks about human rights:

April 18, 2008 - 10:30 a.m. - Address to the United Nations

It is a camera cut lasting only a few seconds at some point in the middle of the Papal adress, sorry can´t provide better timestamp or extract, watch the whole thing. These were powerful images. And Ban-Ki-Moon, in a Freudian slip, said "Pope Benefit."

171 eaglewingz08  Wed, Apr 23, 2008 4:12:49am

Just goes to show a broen clock is right twice a day and an incompetent terrorist enabling organization can accidentally discover weapons caches ot terrorists. Of course the unifil unit would NEVER publicise the find because that might result in some ignorant antifakistinian government declaring hizbolunatics to be in violation of a certain UN Resolution that demaned they disarm, and how would the UN enable hizbolunatics to commit genocide against jooos if they actually disarmed these jihadis?

To jcm and his new element congrats on winning the nobel prize. rofl

172 Jed  Wed, Apr 23, 2008 4:59:10am

The UN is 'Useless Nonsense" or even worse. They should be removed if they are not going to do anything.
