Galloway is knocked out

FIREBRAND MP George Galloway was knocked out cold today when he was hit on the head by a RUBBER ball while he was ranting.

The ex Celebrity Big Brother contestant - on the campaign trail for the London Assembly elections - was roaring through a loudspeaker on the top of an open-top bus when he was struck.

Eyewitnesses said the 53 year old ducked to avoid the ball and banged his head heavily on the side of the bus.

Obama Must Reject Moore's Endorsement

Washington, D.C. (April 22, 2008) -- The Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) today called on Sen. Barack Obama to reject the endorsement of filmmaker Michael Moore.

The Associated Press reported yesterday that Moore endorsed Sen. Obama in a 1,100-word posting on his Web site. Moore wrote, "Can you do me a favor? Will you please cast my vote - and yours - on Tuesday for Senator Barack Obama?"

"Michael Moore has consistently expressed views that are radically anti-American and anti-Israel. Michael Moore has placed a disproportionate blame on Israel for the Palestinian's use of terror and violence and calls Americans an 'ignorant people,' said RJC Executive Director Matt Brooks. "Senator Obama must reject Moore's endorsement. We call on Barack Obama to reject his endorsement to show Michael Moore that this kind of hateful rhetoric will not be tolerated."

Anti-American and Anti-Israel Statements by Michael Moore

"Hey, here's a way to stop suicide bombings - give the Palestinians a bunch of missile-firing Apache helicopters and let them and the Israelis go at each other head to head. Four billion dollars a year to Israel - four billion dollars a year to the Palestinians - they can just blow each other up and leave the rest of us the hell alone." -- Michael Moore

Moore dedicated his book, "Dude Where's My Country?" to Rachel Corrie, an International Solidarity Movement volunteer who was killed when she climbed in front of a Caterpillar bulldozer that was destroying tunnels used by Palestinian terrorists to illegally smuggle weapons from Egypt into Gaza.
In 1990, speaking before the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, Moore announced that he would refuse to attend a screening of his movie, "Roger and Me," which was being held in Jerusalem. He was quoted as saying that he would not attend until Israel ceased to occupy the West Bank and Gaza. (Arab American News, 1990)

Moore tried to prevent Fahrenheit 9/11 from being shown in Israel. (New Yorker Magazine, February 16, 2004)

In an open letter to the German people in Die Zeit, Moore asked, "Should such an ignorant people [as the United States] lead the world? Don't go the American way when it comes to economics, jobs and services for the poor and immigrants. It is the wrong way." (David Brooks in the New York Times, June 30, 2004)

Surgeons give hope to blind with successful 'bionic eye' operations

The device — the first of its kind — incorporates a video camera and transmitter mounted on a pair of glasses. This is linked to an artificial retina, which transmits moving images along the optic nerve to the brain and enables the patient to discriminate rudimentary images of motion, light and dark.

The operations were conducted as part of an international clinical trial of the technology, known as the Argus II retinal implant, which has already proved successful in restoring rudimentary vision to patients who have become blind because of common conditions such as age-related macular degeneration or retinitis pigmentosa.

101 storagemanager  Tue, Apr 22, 2008 12:48:44pm
CHESTERFIELD, S.C. (AP) - An 18-year-old accused of planning to bomb his high school will be charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction, which carries a possible life sentence, the top federal prosecutor in South Carolina said Tuesday.
Ryan Schallenberger also will face two lesser federal charges stemming from what authorities say was a scheme to detonate explosives in a suicide attack on his high school in the small town of Chesterfield. The straight-A student will be charged in federal court in Florence on Tuesday afternoon, said Kevin McDonald, the acting U.S. attorney for South Carolina.

McDonald said the federal charge comes into play mostly because Schallenberger ordered materials that can be used for bombs through the mail.

William Spencer, the teen's court-appointed attorney, did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

Times Online

The first link I can remember that has the story. I was incredulous and depressed when I heard this. Just a few days later I heard the allegation about why the British soldiers have been so inactive in Basra; deal-striking. I'd require more salt on that story were it not for the fact that such conduct has been proven to be the standard here IN Britain, so it being applied in other areas of our authority isn't much of a stretch.

I actually burned with anger at that moment.

Indeed- Edison was quite the scientist.

Yes - but Edison tried to build DC based distribution, which lost out to AC because AC could carry loads farther from their point of generation. Otherwise, you would have a power plant every few blocks.

So what EC said is actually true - the Edison designed the lightbulb and the rival distribution system evolved in spite of his own efforts.

Adding a new wrinkle, Solar PV electric output is DC. You have to use inverters to have an AC output to go to your house or the grid. Those inverters are a major expense in Solar electricity generation. Those panels can actually facilitate a "power plant very few blocks" configuration for a grid, so Edison's DC vision may come to fruition yet!

US "Christian" moonbat delegation travels to Iran on a "peace mission"...

Q: So, after you return home, you are going to meet congressmen. Are you hopeful that you can influence their position toward Iran?

McNish: We particularly want to share the message that we offer over and over and over again, that it is against Islam to have or develop or use nuclear weapons.

We believe that many people in the United States are fearful, inflamed by the media, that Iran is developing nuclear weapons. We want to try not to be naive or anything like that. But we want to say... what we heard when we were in Iran. It was very strong. ...

Q: Could you tell us about the peace movement in the United States?

McNish: There is a new peace and justice movement, particularly for the Palestinians. There is enormous support among our churches. All of them are on record saying that there must be a just peace proper for the Palestinians.

Within seconds, two Kassam rockets launched by Palestinian Authority terrorists in northern Gaza slammed into the city.

One of the missiles scored a direct hit on a home, sending a group of residents into severe emotional shock and causing heavy damage to the structure. The second exploded in an area on the outskirts of the city.

Israeli Air Force pilots immediately took to the skies to retaliate. PA sources said IAF pilots fired missiles at a car carrying terrorists in the southern Gaza town of Khan Younis. According to the report, a number of passersby were injured in the air strike but the report has not been confirmed. It is not clear whether the gunmen were hit

Hi, gang!

We finally had some warm enough weather, although rather windy, that I could start taking care of one of my major non-pleasant outdoor chores -- cleaning the ponds. Taking care of the little one doesn't involve wading, and it gives me a place to put the fish from the big one until I get rid of the excess, so that was what got done. As I type, it's filling back up, about ready to get its first dose of yet another attempt at algae control.

I'm going to get rid of all the goldfish this spring, and start adding koi, if this new algae control works. If it doesn't, I'll be going to fishless water features -- I'm really, really tired of a couple of days of clear water, then green the rest of the time! I do know part of that is (hopefully was!) due to too many fish. That, however, was totally due to the fish! I put 7 goldfish in when I started the big pond. A year and a half later, I gave away close to two hundred, keeping about 20. The ones I gave away have multiplied into (at a guess) a couple of thousand in a half-acre pond, and I'm back to probably a couple of hundred myself.

Weather permitting, as the forecast claims it will, I'll clean the big pond tomorrow. I'm not looking forward to the process, but I am to the results!

I have a 7.5 KW pv system. Converted the house to all electric. Runs the house, the computers, the pumps - eeverything. Grid tied, so I pay a small charge to the electric company for them to provide me wattage at night while I provide them wattage during the day. Nets out to zero.

It has worked out great.

Mooonbats planning on shutting down the RNC convention in St. Paul. One of 3 links at the bottom of the story, is pretty disturbing, nornc.org, these nuts have ordered hundreds of tasers to arm protesters with, because the police are armed, and the story says the police will get violent. Are these nuts really considering tasering St. Paul police officers?

Interesting news. Who's buying those tasers? Soros?

re: #194 EC Marm

I'm green with envy. I'm very solar favorably situated and would love to tell the utility to shove it. The initial upfront cost is the deal breaker.

Yeah : it is steep. But consider a few things.

1: price of power is going to be going up for a while. Once you buy your system, you are "locked in" so to speak.

2 : The system has a residual value. Even when the panels are "gone" after 25 years, they still produce electricity. Just not at the same rate they did. If power prices continue to climb at an average of 7% a year, after 25 years, the worth of the residual system (assuming it produces 50% of what it did initially) is still more than double what you paid for it.

3 : rebates, tax breaks and incentives lower the cost.

4 : used equipment is available and is a bargain with typically 4 year payback. You don't get tax breaks and you have to do it yourself, but it is an option.

OT: Former US Army Engineer Accused of Spying for Israel

Anyone reminded of Pollard? I'm wondering if this guy will get a life sentence (if convicted, of course) or if he'll get a lighter sentence than Pollard. Should there be leniency because Israel is an ally, or similar treatment as someone spying for a non-friendly nation?

I hope we've got a program to obtain Israeli military technology, either openly or covertly (if necessary). I suspect they're ahead of us in many areas.

Another glimpse into that mythical place: the wonderful world of "Islamic Science":

Egyptian Researcher Dr. Abd Al-Baset Al-Sayyed Explains the "Science" behind His Demand to Abolish Greenwich Mean Time and Replace It with Mecca Time

Following are excerpts from an interview with Abd Al-Baset Al-Sayyid, of the Egyptian National Research Center. The interview was aired on Mihwar TV on December 26, 2006.

Abd Al-Baset Al-Sayyid: When British colonialism or the British kingdom were in control, and it was "an empire on which the sun never sets," it imposed Greenwich Mean Time. This creates two problems for the world. The first problem is that in Greenwich, the magnetic field of Earth is 8.5 degrees, whereas in Mecca the magnetic field is zero.

[...]

Interviewer: Before the break, we talked to Dr. Abd Al-Baset about the centrality of Mecca, and about the importance of measuring time according to the latitude of Mecca, and not according to the latitude of Greenwich... Why is it?

Abd Al-Baset Al-Sayyid: It has been proven that there is a certain discrepancy if we calculate it according to Greenwich. This discrepancy has been estimated as 8.5 minutes between the northern and southern hemispheres.

Interviewer: How much?

Abd Al-Baset Al-Sayyid: 8.5 minutes. Air traffice cannot be organized this way. They are aware of this, and so they try to change it.

Interviewer: Really?

Abd Al-Baset Al-Sayyid: Yes. If they calculated time according to Mecca, it would be the same in the northern and southern hemispheres.

Interviewer: Surely they know this...

Abd Al-Baset Al-Sayyid: Yes, but we have to work on these things. We must declare this, and we must convene a large conference with them, and tell them that time must be calculated according to Mecca.

Interviewer: What other benefits are there to calculating time according to Mecca?

Abd Al-Baset Al-Sayyid: If you calculate time according to Mecca, those 8.5 minutes... The magnetic field of Earth, for example... What I say is that there are people at the North Pole and the South Pole who cannot come here in multitudes.

Interviewer: Really?

Abd Al-Baset Al-Sayyid: This is because the magnetic force is concentrated there, which affects people's blood and the biological movement of life. It has been proven that if magnetism, anywhere, exceeds 1,000 gauss, which equals one tenth of a tesla, it affects the ability of the hemoglobin in the blood to carry oxygen to the body's tissues, the ability of the blood to carry oxygen to the tissues.

Interviewer: In other words, the ability to live...

Abd Al-Baset Al-Sayyid: Yes, to live... This means is that when you are in Mecca, the ability of the blood to carry oxygen to the tissues is greater than anywhere else in the world.

Interviewer: That's why, when people travel to Mecca, they return full of energy.

Abd Al-Baset Al-Sayyid: In Mecca, you don't exert any effort. That's why you may see an old man, who cannot walk, or who walks with crutches, and even though it gets very crowded around the Ka'ba, he is filled with great strength, and he circles the Ka'ba. You do not exert any effort, and you are filled with energy, because you are in a place in which there is no magnetic force.

[...]

Anybody who studies human chemistry knows that all circulation in the human body is to the right. All the components are called "dextro-rotatary," which means circulating to the right. They call it dextro-rotatory, which means circulating to the right. When I'm circulating [the Ka'ba] from right to left, anti-clockwise, I increase my body's circulation, and consequently I am filled with energy.

Interviewer: I get filled with energy too?

Abd Al-Baset Al-Sayyid: Yes, because the right-to-left circulation in my body increases.

Have you looked into tankless water heaters? Glenn Beck and Rush pimp one... I forget the name of it though.

Yes.

So here is the deal on tankless.

Works great for gas. The heat is instant and sustained. My brother in law has one and swears by it. He even bought an extra gun cabinet to go where the tank used to be.

Doesn't work so great for electric. Electric is newer technology and doesn't have the bugs worked out. So the heat isn't so instant and isn't always sustained. And sometimes the units just stop working and are hard to service (with the loads involved, you need / want an electrician to service the thing). That should be fixed in the years to come. One caveat - older homes won't have the amperage in their service panel to carry the load. So turn on your hot water and you brown out your house and the two next to you.

My pool is solar heated and my boys one day decided to set it to 98 degrees and it got there in a couple of days. Direct solar heating of water is vastly more efficient than going solar to electric to water. Problem is I have to replumb part of the house to get a setup that will hide the ugliness from my wife's eyes - she rules on all.

We'll have to do tests in increments of 5 degrees at each location. We'll have to account for tidal variations, so tests every 5 minutes.

That works out to 10,368 tests for each location. If we do a test every degree of long and lat that's 129,600 locations. We'll need 1,343,692,800 korans for a complete examination of the issue.

Hydrogen power? Accidents leave craters not wrecked cars. Not to mention it takes more energy to make the hydrogen than you get FROM the hydrogen.

natural gas? Possible. Heck, here in oklahoma,as with other states, we burn it just to get rid of it. Developing that technology widescale is too far out though.

Electric cars? Doable in the south, but even then unless you have nuclear power, it isn't viable...

My solution? Kick the enviro-weenies in the butt, drill in Anwr, build nuclear power plants all over and develop electric cars for the south and build more refineries in the north.

Thanks. Got a new CD coming out shortly and I'll send you a copy. We hired a guy to produce it and he has been taking his sweet time getting it out. He's had the master since January.

Working on the 3rd CD as we speak. I got creative in the last week and wrote two complete new tunes for it. Also wrote the title tune. That motivated Mrs. 3 wood and she buckled down and wrote one the other night. I'm waiting for her to polish it and then will record it.

I'm also working on a version of Jerusalem Ridge.

If I can come up with a version of it I'm happy with and get permission, I'll record it.

Excellent! You have my email, when it gets close to time, I"ll see about getting an order together for you.

Interesting to know, thanks.

We have a pool, but it isn't heated. Just the power of sunlight ... heh.

And with a clear plastic pool cover, there are times that the pool water gets over 100 degrees F.

I need to get our pump serviced... then plug it back in and let it circulate for a few days...

Still too cold to swim in, need to get it up in the upper 80's before I like to go for a swim.

Solar heating a pool can be done cheap. If you are handy and don't mind glue fumes, you can make reliable collectors and then simply put them in line with your pump when you get it fixed. The prefab collectors are pretty cheap too. Don't know the size of your pool or configuration, but parts for the collectors valves and piping can come in at about $1500

One way of keeping the algae under control may be to stick some pond snails in with the fish.
Worked fine for us - pity was, they didn't eat the pondweed ...

Got snails, got catfish. I've tried UV clarifiers with filters, bio-filters, barley, you name it -- my landlady and I, between the two of us, have tried everything we can think of! We've got three ponds in full or near-full sun, the fourth (her small one) gets only a bit of afternoon sun and is usually quite clear. The only time mine was really nice for clarity was the year I had cancer surgery and couldn't clear out the excess plant growth -- it looked like a jungle, and I still couldn't see the fish!

This year we're trying Pond Care's Algaefix (her) and Algae Destroyer (me), plus cutting 'way back on the number of fish.

Wish us luck!

No, some of that barrel goes toward heating oil. Some toward gasoline. Some becomes kerosene. Some becomes diesel/fuel oils #1 and #2. Some becomes propane and butane. Some becomes tar and asphalt. Some becomes heavy fuel oil and bunker oil. And yet still more is used in motor oil and plastics.

Squirrels are something of an evolutionary paradox. On the one hand, they're quite well-adapted to hunters with guns; if in a tree, they try to keep the tree between them and you. On the other hand, when startled by a car or bicycle, they have a strong habit of first darting toward safety, THEN turning around and running almost directly under the wheels.

Translations Of Mohamed, Megahed Dialogue Released

TAMPA - After Youssef Megahed and Ahmed Mohamed were arrested in South Carolina, deputies recorded the men talking to each other in Arabic in the back of a patrol car.

snip

In the prosecution transcript, at one point Megahed asks Mohamed, "Did you tell them about the gasoline?"

"No," Mohamed responds. "I didn't know. I told them it's not yours and that you have nothing to do with it and I was the one who made these fireworks, and, and and. ... Correct? I mean, (unintelligible) and the will of Almighty God, (unintelligible) and God willing, there is nothing on you. I had told them that these things he brought, which is the (unintelligible) these are the stuff that he bought (unintelligible) and this filter."

In the defense transcript, Megahed asks, "Did you tell them about the benzene (gasoline)?"

Mohamed says, "I have nothing to do with it. I do the fireworks and so ... so ... so ... That is it ... God willing. (Inaudible) ... and I told them he bought these things (inaudible). He bought a new rifle and he uses these things to clean with."

The prosecution has suggested the pair were getting their story straight. Megahed's attorneys have said the conversation reflects the fact that Megahed didn't know anything about the devices in the trunk.

The defense maintains that the items in the trunk were homemade fireworks, or sugar rockets.

The prosecution alleges they were capable of being dangerous.

In addition to the devices, deputies found a container of gasoline in the trunk.

Every time I see a picture of a power pole it reminds me of squirrels. Yes it reminds me of how two weeks in a row some damn squirrels committed suicide on my power pole and knocked out my power. The bang from their little squirrel bodies coming in contact with high voltage sounded like the transformer blew up and their little squirrel bodies lay at the foot of the pole, the bastards. After the second time the power company put a shield or something on the line to keep them from killing themselves and inconveniencing me.

U.S. oil firms want Libya exempted from terrorism compensation law

One by one, top executives of American oil companies met privately over the past year with the Libyan leader Muammar el-Qaddafi - often in his trademark Bedouin tent - as they lined up contracts allowing them to tap into the country's oil reserves. But now, thanks to a law that threatens those deals, the new allies are working Capitol Hill. The American oil industry and the Libyan government, once a pariah in Washington, have hired high-profile lobbyists, buttonholed lawmakers and enlisted help from the Bush administration, all in an effort to win an exemption from a law that Congress passed in January that is intended to ensure that victims of terrorist attacks are compensated.

Disgusting.

MSM Bias of the Day

TEHRAN — If an Iranian woke up in America and glimpsed the front page of a newspaper, he’d be reminded of home: a teetering economy, a restless populace, a tough-talking leader.

snip

Some analysts wonder whether the Islamic Republic, led by supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, wants a significant improvement in relations with the U.S. Since the Islamic Revolution in 1979, when militants in Tehran seized 52 American hostages and held them for 444 days, the weekly chants of “Death to America” have become a defining mantra, much in the same way Bush’s “axis of evil” resonates with American conservatives.

snip

But, like the U.S., Iran is feeling the squeeze of an economy in turmoil and an uneasy population.

snip

“If Mr. Obama won the election, it would be good,” said Hooshang Tale, a former member of parliament.

snip

“If the Iranians feel less threatened by America, they’ll be more open. When you have 160,000 U.S. troops in Iraq, three American aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf, and a president and vice president who keep talking about military options, it’s hard to think about Iranians being open.”

That last bit shows just how delusional the author is.

If it wasn't for the War in Iraq, Iranians would be free.

Here's an idea- why don't we try using our own oil?

Back when the arabs cut back our supply of oil in 1974 we, the citizens, were told that we would go for energy independence. Well, idea was shut down by cheap oil. We cannot produce cheap oil so the market won out. OPEC has driven down the price of oil whenever it looked like alternate sources would come on line if developed. Now with the ascension of Al Gore to god like status carbon has become the devil. There is no shortage of carbon based energy only the will to use our own. Seems we prefer to bow to our energy masters. Our willingness to follow fools and call them wise is scares the crap out of me.

Don't think the water would help much in heating, but I don't need much heat.

/possibilities

Look into geothermal heat pump. They either drill down, or lay a gird of pipes down where ground temp is constant. The use that to heat or cool depending on season. Steep on the install but more efficient that an outside air heat pump or AC.

re: #438 LanceKates

We get one good freeze in the winter, but in oklahoma, winter is short.

We had a bad ice storm this year, though... Fema promised a bunch of help, but we got the short end of the stick.

No public outcry like in New Orleans, of course...

but we're not the right color.

We went through the Witch Fire. Everything brned except the house itself and we had a good bit of smoke damage.

FEMA came through and were helpful in getting me in touch with folks in the Dept of Agriculture for recovering what was an Avocado orchard.

FEMA wanted to survey all of the damaged properties to keep in their databases and we were OK with that. They were pretty clear that they provide help for those who weren't insured or not fully insured and that help in the form of grants was limited to essentials for health and shelter. We were fully insured through USAA so we got a polite letter saying we wouldn't be getting any help, not that we expected any.

Having gone through the process with them, they struck me as responsive and organized. I assume they weren't during Katrina and simply handed checks to anyone who could tell a good story. 4 years before, during the Cedar fire (which also came through our neighborhood) FEMA was handing out money for generators and whatnot. We didn't take the aid on the assumption that others may need it (which is how most people probably thought preKatrina).

Point is, FEMA struck me as on top of what they should be doing even if they didn't give me free beer, a month in a luxury hotel and a flat screen (which seemed to be the Katrina response). I don't think many tax dollars were wasted on fraud in the Witch Fire. The process struck me as fairly tight.

re: #658 karmic_inquisitor

Here in Oklahoma they promised many restaurants that they would help recover food costs as power was out for almost a week and MANY restaurants lost much of their frozen food as it was above what the health board allows, temperaturewise.

Then, at the last minute, they said that they were refusing to help, no reason given.

When requests were issued, they said nothing for a month or two, then just recently came out and said that they weren't going to say why claims were rejected because it wasn't any of our business.

We, personally, didn't get any help, but we didn't have any real damage.

Just the annoyance of not having power for most of a week.

The restaurant that we often go to almost had to shut its doors and I STILL don't think that they've made up for that loss yet.

Ann

Been noticing your Algae thread.

this may not work for you or may work the wrong way, but here goes.

My wife uses lavender stalks to keep a fountain we have algae free. I don't know where she heard of it, but she has lavender in her garden and takes a few stalks that have blooms on the ends and places them in the water and leaves them there every couple of weeks. It works, but I have no idea if it would harm fish.

Something I have used in the pool was a type or diatemaceous earth type compound called "no phos". Phosphate clings to it. If you deprive algae of phosphate, the algae dies. I would put the no phos in the pool so it would coat my filter, which in turn gets the phosphate.

A couple of ideas, both of which might kill your fish.

I wouldn't call ritual sacrifice "experimenting with open-heart surgery," but of course I discontinued my PC Term of the Month Encyclopedia installments.

I recall that there is evidence that the ancient Egyptians did some primitive brain surgery--actually intended as surgery rather than human sacrifice--but there, too, I suspect that shock and sepsis, in the absence of anaesthetics and antiseptics, rendered most of these efforts, however skilled, for naught.

Yep, most of those efforts were found in a tomb. Simple math.

Okay, I did a little poetic license on conflating the Mayans and Aztecs on the beating hearts thingy. But the Mayans DID practice human sacrifice. Been to Chichen Itza? BIG time human sacrifice.

As to the Incan mummies, that was almost certainly a form of sacrifice, too; maidens left to basically die of exposure as a sacrifice to the Apu, the spirits of the mountains (not the Kwik-E-Mart owner).

Close. Geo-thermal heating & cooling is based on this principle using water source heat pumps. Air conditioners use air as the medium of heat transfer. Inside, the a/c unit gives off cold air and outside it gives off hot air. The indoor heat is transferred outside. As outside air temps climb, the a/c's efficiency tumbles. No, it wasn't. The big advantages Pizarro and his boys had were that 1) they were able to exploit already-exisiting civil strife in the Incan Empire (so much for that fluffy primordial paradise crap), and 2) Atahualpa believed his own press, apparently - that he was a god who could not be harmed - and met Pizarro at Cajamarca accompanied by a mostly UNARMED retinue, which the numerically inferior Spaniards were able to make quick work of using steel weapons, firearms, and horses. And then they had the god/king as a captive.

The big promise in the geothermal is that they work great for heat in the winter, when the system reverses itself.

It is easier to get heat out of the earth at 56 degrees than it is to get it out of air at 20 degrees.

If we had a nuclear base generation capability and had all of our oil heated houses using geothermal heat pumps instead (and getting AC in the hot summer thrown into the bargain) think of how much oil we could NOT import.

A water sourced heat pump eliminates this in-efficiency. To understand heat pumps, one has to realize that heat is a noun and cold is an adjective.

My thermodynamics training comes up. If you think in terms of heat (even as a noun) and cold (an adjective) it's easy to get confused. How can I heat my house form outside when it is colder out there?

It about transfer of energy.

As long as a material (air, earf, water) is above absolute zero it has energy. The same amount of material at different temperatures has less energy cold and more energy warm.

The benefit is there is lots and lots of air, earth or water outside our house. So much so from the perspective of heating a house the amount of energy outside regardless of temperature is considered infinite.

A heat pump takes some of that reservoir of energy outside, and moves it inside.

To cool reverse the process and move the energy outside.

Sorry for the overly technical digression.

Some Mayans are still around today, abit with their culture pretty much destroyed. The Aztecs and Incas, on the other hand, were exterminated.

Interestingly enough, I do mean exterminated. The Spaniards deliberately engaged in practises, such as the intentional spreading of disease, which led to the demise to two, almost three indigenous peoples of South America. It was genocide in a pretty effective form. And yet no-one actually gives a damn, despite it's relative historical proximity.

As a slight tangent, Swedish documents have now effectively confirmed that the behaviour of the Ottoman Turks circa 1915 -23 was intentional genocide. And need I mention the Holocaust which took it's inspiration from the Ottoman Turks' example?

And yet the idea of intentional population destruction is a horrifying concept on a basic level to most humans. I don't really understand that, given the numerous examples of no-one caring about when it HAS actually happened...

I am not going to cite specific examples of where it could happen in the future, by whatever agency. Such speculation, even in hypothesis, tends to spiral out of control and led diametrically away from rational discussion. But I can postulate from these examples that SHOULD it ever happen, within one or two generations, it'll already be pretty irrelevant to the world.

The Aztecs and Incas, on the other hand, were exterminated.

Er, no, not the Incas (broadly defined to mean the ethnicity, not the "Inca" ruling class). Populations in Peru, Ecuador, and to a lesser extent Bolivia and even Argentina today are their direct descendents. The Incan language, Quechua, is still widely spoken.

Also, btw, the Incas did have the use of bronze and copper, but not iron.

Just found the numbers: We'd have an 8% reduction in oil consumption translating into a 14% reduction in imports

According to some historical accounts, and I read them in books so links would be... difficult, though I will try, the Spaniards took advantage of the natives lack of immunity to smallpox, which was rife in Europe at the time and to which many of the conquistadors were immune through exposure, by offering them blankets which they had previously contaminated with smallpox through direct contact with infected individuals, or dead. A knowledge of microbial spread or infection mechanism in unnecessary when empirical observation of "Touch something someone sick has touched and you get sick too" is sufficient. Even during the bubonic plague that level of disease spread was commonplace.

If the Spaniards knew how to deliberately spread small pox, they would have known how to stop spreading it among themselves. If they knew how to stop spreading it in their own country it wouldn't have been an epidemic in Europe and they would have had no immunity.
They did spread diseases to which the Aztec had no immunity but it was unintentional. The flow worked both ways. We can likely thank the Aztec for the introduction of syphilis to the European population.

Actually, they probably did know in general terms that physical contact caused the disease to spread; even if they didn't know why.

But I agree that the general introduction of this and other European diseases was overwhelmingly unintentional.

The blanket story is an old one, repeatedly shot down here, it was an English officer at Ft. Pitt that wrote about the possibility of using contaminated materials. The Spanish weren`t offering Aztecs blankets, they would have laughed to see such coarse stuff compared to all the intricate featherwork mantles they had. Original documents and first-person accounts on the Spanish and Aztecs (Nahuatl) are easy to access, the language is still widely spoken in Mexico also. Ward Churchill peddled a lot of BS and now it seems to have spread to peoples he didn`t even mention in his "research".
Jeffery Amherst and Smallpox Blankets

Louis Pasteur and the germ theory of disease came quite a bit later.

Smallpox factoids

Hmm, the account of the British Officer is related.

"Perhaps more than any other single factor, smallpox accounted for the collapse of the Amerindian populations facing European expansion. As Governor John Winthrop of Massachusetts Bay wrote in 1634, "For the natives, they are neere all dead of the small Poxe, so the Lord hathe cleared our title to what we possess." Most of the Amerindian epidemics over the next 250 years probably arose from casual causes, but in 1763 Sir Jeffery Amherst, commanding British military forces in North America, proposed an intentional infection to quell Pontiac's Rebellion. Over time, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and the Great Lakes to the Gulf, smallpox decimated the tribes, until those finally confined to reservations either acquired immunity and survived or perished like their ancestors."

Hmm, yup. A distinct lack of evidence that this particular Black Legend is factual. Another reason to hold my school in contempt. Rather embarrassing really, I typically research better than that...

Amen! Sorry for the delay in responses, multi-tasking here. I live in CT and wanted to convert from a/c and oil heat to an air source heat pump (geo-thermal not viable here since I live on the side of a mountain - too many big rocks). My research discovered that the electrical usage of an air heat pump below temps of 38' air temps became a losing proposition energy-wise. I planned to install an outdoor thermostat to control just when the heat pump delivered my heat vs the oil furnace.

Geo-thermal changes the equation dramatically. If I went with geo-thermal, I could remove the oil furnace and only have the electric bill from the heat pump to deal with. Talk about energy savings! They would be off the charts. Most people don't realize that the constant temps of geo-thermal at 56' begets much higher temps at the heat pump's output. I could maintain my house at 80' in the winter and 60' in the summer if I so chose. We need to get a LOT smarter in how we choose to heat & cool our homes.

[snorts] Oh, my issues with that school go much deeper than simple misinformation.

The problem in this case, regarding the information, is that I haven't really looked into the history well enough, instead relying on someone else who had more than me, though still not as a specialisation. She had heard similar tales and thus my supposed knowledge was backed up by a supposed better informed source. I will re-educate her tomorrow, it's late over here now.

A minor example of how consensus means nothing, irrespective of the intelligence of the people involved, heh.

It's not free-speech DSage, not when the key point is the teaching of something unscientific as science. The main proponents, and I say MAIN, of the side opposing your own never tried to deny the prospect of Creationism, ID or anything else in the realm of the philosophical/spiritual, only in the realm of the scientific. They were precise in their definitions, and had those definitions mostly ignored by their opponents. I would point people towards the spin-off link I made, which was also mostly ignored : )

It's funny that no one mentions the malarial decimation of the "Amerindians." Malaria-infected mosquitos hitchhiked across the oceans in the ships. New World populations had no more immunity built up against that than against smallpox.

One wonders that perhaps it didn't fit the "European-meanie" theme that was being pushed, especially by Professor Ward Churchill.

Creationism at work?
New virus causes South American fever

Scientists have identified a new virus that causes bleeding and shock and killed at least one man in a remote area of Bolivia.

It appears to be highly deadly and, like other related viruses, is carried by rodents, the researchers report in Friday's issue of the Public Library of Science journal PLoS Pathogens.

They have named the new virus the Chapare arenavirus, and say it is related to the viruses that cause Lassa fever and other rare viruses such as Junin, Machupo, Guanarito, and Sabia viruses. They have about a 30 percent fatality rate.

But it is genetically distinct.

"It is quite a unique virus and we are suggesting that it be considered as a new species of arenavirus," Stuart Nichol of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, who helped study the virus, said in a telephone interview.

Creation Science will be working around the clock to find a cure.

In other news, my religion dictates 2+2=5. I demand that school children also be taught 2+2=5, or at the very minimum be taught that there is a controversy as to the precise value of 2+2. Any attempt to say I am wrong, or say that such thinking does not belong in the classroom, is not based on math but rather an insidious attempt to stifle free speech.

After all, 2+2=4 can only mean that atheism, nihilism, and indeed totalitarianism are acceptable.

Incidentally, Darwin was blatantly wrong. His point was that Natural Selection was the main driving force of Evolution, which is clearly not true given most subsequent observations. Whilst it IS a factor, it is a passive motivator and evolution seems to operate on a more active avenue. The Theory of Evolution pre-dated Darwin, and his hypothesis has been analysed and requires (is getting) massive updating. The single-minded focus on him detracts from the wider field in a large way.

Well, I skimmed the "Expelled" thread--rather rapidly--and I have to say that I honestly don't get what there was a fight about, if indeed there was a fight. Admittedly, I did not have time to savor every nuance, but it was a long thread and I have to at least pretend to earn a living.

I don't understand the passions that evolution seems to evoke in so many people. I've always considered the creation story in the Bible a story whose truth is designed for a moral understanding of man's place in the universe, not as a process blueprint--and scientific understanding, which changes as additional information is discovered, a process blueprint that has nothing to do with moral understanding and that is inevitably incomplete.

So where is the conflict?

I'm with you. what's the big deal? God can't let stuff percolate? He's not allowed to work in stages or something? My ancestors came from a monkey? Why is that so insulting? I'm an evangelical and I find nothing offensive except the TOTAL exclusion of God from the process. God spoke to the understanding at the time; if he'd have told Moses about DNA, what would that have accomplished? God created it, and he may have used an evolutionary model...everybody get over it already!

Happy Lenin's birthday, comrades!

Certain reactionaries have demanded an explanation for the late snowstorms that have blanketed parts of the country in spite of the known, certified, media and party approved proof of global warming.

As an actual scientist and therefore endowed by the media with infallibility (so long as I toe the party-line) I have seen the Troof and I can explain it to you embittered, gun-totin’ racist hillbillies.
So pay attention:

According to emiment reserchers such as Ted Turner, Robert Mugabe, and the UN Special Rapporteur for Global Warming and American War Crimes, warmer temperatures make the oceans sluggish, just like hillbillies in the summertime.
Because of this heat-induced ennui, less water evaporates from those oceans. This means less rain and snow. Ice floes are not replenished and grow smaller. Polar bears, sealions, and other creatures fall in and drown. Tourist dollars dry up. Without game to hunt, the Oppressed Arctic peoples (”Eskimos” and “Inuit”) must then leave their ancestral hunting grounds, er, floes, and move south.

As all true children of Gaia know, these native people possess natural folk wisdom that is genetically denied to us industrialized artificial types (as well as to gun-totin’ hillbillies). In particular, they are psychically and cosimically connected to Mother Gaia in ways that we cannot comprehend.
Because of these cosmo-spiritualistic affinities, their nature spirits follow them to our hellish climes. This naturally includes the spirit of snow, which is why Mother Gaia is allowing it in places where it is usually rare in this temporal nexus.

May I have my grant now?
