PA Primary Thread 1

Tue, Apr 22, 2008 at 5:31:13 pm PDT

The polls have closed in Pennsylvania, and by all accounts there was a record turnout for this Democratic primary. Here’s an open thread to discuss what may end up being Hillary’s Last Stand...

UPDATE at 4/22/08 6:39:03 pm:

It’s too soon to count Hillary out. She’s apparently won in Pennsylvania. This means we need to lay in some extra supplies of popcorn for the Democratic convention. Don’t forget the butter substitute.

18 Yankee Division Son  Tue, Apr 22, 2008 5:37:05pm

Random thoughts..
Why is it with every other primary I've watched, results begin to come in the second the polls close. Not with PA. what's up with that?

Why does the whole world seem to think changing their icon/logo color to green will somehow save the planet?

Why, since Charles has had a green icon for years, does he seem to get no "eviro-cred" for it?

Maybe I should just eat my waffle...

I am so surprised it is taking so long for results. Is PA deliberately embargoing results until they are all counted? Most states publish results as they arrive.

re: #18 Yankee Division Son

The MSM are in the throws of such a big Obamagasm that they have been thrown in a state of shock by returns that show HRC leading and possibly winning PA.

That's my theory.

25 RememberSekhmet?  Tue, Apr 22, 2008 5:39:33pm

Outer Bugtussle, Pennsylvania may have 50 votes to count. If they have Scantrons or electronic voting machnes, it takes all of five minutes to count and report the numbers.

In early numbers Clinton is ahead almost 2 to 1. If that trend even remotely continues to a win of more than 10 points, then this thing is probably gonna go to a brokered convention.

I'm so torn up about that.

So TH's are saying that if Hillary wins by double digits, it will re-vitalize her campaign simply because if Barack Obama out-spent her 4-1 AND STILL COULD NOT GET CLOSER THAN THAT, he will absolutely not be able to win in November.

Not to mention the percentage of Hillary backers who have said they will not vote for Obama if he is the candidate, but will vote for McCain.

It will be up to the Superdelegates (and how stupid a system is that, anyway?) to either go for the candidate with the most votes, or the candidate who has the better chance (aaack, aaack.....COUGH! Sorry, that was hard to type)

Fox now projects Clinton as winner. They also give the secret to making money on the stock market - buy low, sell high.

But Mom said that if Hillary became Prez that Bill would really be her VP on the side and it would be 'same old, same old'....her words.

Unless I miss my guess, the "Recreate '68" mob will be trying to act out their own mythology of the 1968 Dem convention rather than the reality. That mythology holds that peaceful flower-children were viciously attacked by maniacal fascist thugs for daring to march and dissent and sing Kumbaya where fatcat delegates could see them.
Since that isn't what happened, there will be no re-creation. It will be an effort to act out a fantasy at best.

You can find CNN exit polls on this page:

Based on the gender breakdown, if you do the multiply-and-add for each candidate, Hillary looks to have won by about 5%. This is consistent with what polls were indicating.

True, though the left's demonstrated inability to either understand or learn from history precludes them from grasping that little nuance. Hopefully (and yes, it's a stretch), a few of them will step out of line, and the sheep will follow.

Yeah, all I've been hearing from my "enlightened" friends over the last few weeks is how no white person living outside the cities in PA would ever vote for a black person. It's 2008, and even the rednecks from my home town in South Carolina would be willing to give a black man a fair shake (if he were a Republican), but yet somehow all the Obama-maniacs up here have actually met people who have stated out loud, in public, that they'd never vote for a black person.

Yeah, right.

They were just getting their mouths warmed up for all the excuses about Pennsylvania "rednecks" that we're going to hear for the next week.

Is she wins by 10%, and that gives her a 2nd wind, he would have been much better served to air a few less commercials on how he does not take money from oil companies, instead drive north up Broad St. and throw out stacks of $20s. Hummmm. Who to choose, who to choose?

Hildebeast or the verbose empty suit?

Such a hard decision.

Hildebeast is a known factor. Verbose Empty Suit is a marxist.

Who to choose?

Ehhhhh...I'm gonna have to root for the Hildebeast. She is beatable and I'm sick of his hollow verboseness (is that even a word, voerboseness?)

I can't believe that I'm actually rooting for the Beast!

Hildy is a marxist too. Her ties to Saul Alinsky, her lawyer friends when young. I already knew some of it, Jonah Goldberg is enlightening me right now with Liberal Fascism. Reading the chapter on her right now.

I've gotta be honest about this, John McCain has been running almost a a perfect race thus far. He did just enough to garner the GOP nomination, and he's on cruise control in the background while the dems are working each other over with boxcutters. It's impressive, and more indication that he's a legitimate candidate to be our CiC.

This primary isn't going to decide matters. Hillary is on track for a modest win. It will not be a blowout. It'll be too small a win, in the state that gave her her best odds, to improve her chances of catching up.

The thing will go into overtime. Obama hurt his chances with that "bitter" remark, but that one mistake won't undo him. He can limp home to a win, if getting more earned delegates counts as a win, just running out the clock, if he doesn't make any more big mistakes.

He sees this. He's decided to avoid further debates. But---what if this decision to duck and weave his way through the rest of the fight turns out to be a mistake? It's not a good fit for his persona and image. It's not a good fit for his claim that he'll bring "change". How do you bring change, if your style is to play to not lose?

225 solomonpanting  Tue, Apr 22, 2008 6:16:10pm

You can console yourself: there are excellent wines in America, from California, for example, despite the "unquaffable" politicians from all states. Just one more endeavor in which private enterprise is far superior to government action.

I see no inherent positive qualities of democracy, just fewer negative ones than most other forms of government, and an ability to mitigate even more negative qualities inherent to all forms of government, but that democracy keeps in check better than any other.

"It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried." Winston Churchill

We might want to discuss various forms of government another time. It's something I HAVE spent a lot of time looking into.

52% of innings reporting, White Sox/ Yankees tied 2-2

386 bikermailman  Tue, Apr 22, 2008 6:43:52pm

This just in from my mom, more news on Obama/Ayers connections:

Today's (Tues, 4-22) Hugh Hewitt radio show isn't posted yet, but I was listening this afternoon. I already knew that Obama & Weather Underground's Ayers had ties. But Hugh Hewitt played tracks from recording made in just Nov. 2007 of a "reunion" meeting of Weather Underground at Ayers house. (One would think that people would know by now that they might have visual or audio of ANY of their meetings. Of course, it doesn't seem to make any difference, does it?) And people nowadays have no memory of how very violent & pure commie the group was.

The Nov. 2007 tape was loaded with comments from Bill Ayers & his wife and former underground cohort, Bernadine Dorhn:
Have to overthrow U.S. imperialism & replace with a "new society."
Talked about the spirit we can build on, then quoted Chinese Communist, Jo en Lai (spelling?) Quoted him about the change taking a long time. (Basically, saying to keep your eye on the ball & be patient.)
Would have to talk (publicly) in a language that is generous (like healthcare & social help) THEN act! (in other words, get your people in power by talking up "generous" things, then when in power "overthrow U.S. imperialism & replace it with new society.)
Said this is a time of great oppression & that government abusing gays & women.
Bernadine said they were inside the heart of the monster. In the belly of the Beast.
Called the U.S. an empire resurrected & unapologetic.
Said it's worth Weather Underground (Nov 2007) coming together after 40 yrs--spirit of rebellion & resistance.
Called this a time of rising Fascism.
You might want to keep an eye/ear out for Hugh Hewitt transcript for today. It probably takes 2-3 days to get it online. Link below.

Also, if I understood Hugh Hewitt correctly, Obama, Michelle Obama, & Bernadine Dorhn worked together in the same firm (in 1980's I think.) And Obama & Bernadine worked together as "organizers."

I'm afraid it's the other way around. We have been abandoning Him for years. I once heard a woman being interviewed (can't remember who-maybe Billy Graham's wife?), and she said God is a gentleman. We have asked him to leave our schools, courthouses and capitols, so he did.

Heh. Personally, I'd agree with the pure sentiment, if likely not whatever they're dribbling about over there.

The United States of America is not supposed to be a democracy. We are a constitutionally limited republic, or we were until we fouled it all up. Pure democracy is little more than mob rule, and highly overrated.

Better Hillary than Obama. Krauthammer wrote an article about how he could live with Hillary as president.

I could never vote for her, but I (and others of my ideological ilk) could live with her -- precisely because she is so liberated from principle. Her liberalism, like her husband's -- flexible, disciplined, calculated, triangulated -- always leaves open the possibility that she would do the right thing for the blessedly wrong (i.e., self-interested, ambition-serving, politically expedient) reason.

Daily Kooks hurting for revenue?

SUBSCRIBE!

If you use ad blocking software while viewing Daily Kos, you're getting all the benefits of our site but we're not getting any of the advertisement revenue associated with your visits. This site relies on ad revenue for daily operations: a decrease in the number of ads seen means a decrease in the funding available to run the site, to pay those that work on it, and to create improved site features.

We won't stop you from using ad blocking software, but if you do use it we ask you to support Daily Kos another way: by purchasing a site subscription. A subscription is an inexpensive way to support the site that eliminates the advertisements without using ad blocking software.

Revenue generated from the subscriptions goes to the Daily Kos fellowship program, providing a steady income for bloggers and allowing them to concentrate full time on expanding the reach and influence of the netroots through a variety of projects.

By using ad blocking software, you may be hiding the site ads but you're also reducing the site's primary source of revenue. So if you must use one, please do your part to support the site and the people that bring it to you by purchasing a site subscription today.

I propose the following campaign concept. Suppose McCain (or Clinton)

While Obama has been spinning his diss the yokels speech in SF as being about bitterness, the galling part is the contemptuous attribution of core belief to resentment rather than the ability of other people to exercise their own intelligent judgment
