59 degrees already with a high near 80 today in the greater metropolitan Doraville area. Cat is staring at me ominously.

A long, long time ago I had a course in college on Ice Ages, and that was the prediction then. The projections we were shown even made room for "man-made global warming" but showed that as a short upward blip in a long-term descent into the cold.

re: #14 goddessoftheclassroom

Hope nobody got hurt. That's actually a pretty intense scene.

Most of my classes have student presentations this week; my Vikings class is reading the saga of Harald Hardrada of Norway who ends up being killed at Stamford bridge in 1066, the first of two invasions of England that year. Today Harald is in the Mediterranean fighting the Saracens.

Only five more days of class. Yippee.

OMG--ROTFL!

What was even funnier to me is that most of the kids read pretty well but without any characterization, Suddenly, the girl playing Lady Montague gets up there and WAS the character. My head swiveled around and I got goosebumps, I said, "Finally someone is really ACTING." Then all the guys (most of whom were bodies on the floor by this time) sat up and started protesting about how dramatic they were.

I love my job.

A little tidbit from yesterday's BotW (since the bitter guns thing has come up).

In the wake of Barack Obama's "bitter" brouhaha, some have defended him by arguing that what he said was true, or at least arguably so. Reader Rob Coker has a terrific analogy that helps explain why the comments were objectionable anyway:

It reminded me of a recent counseling class when different factors that make one irritable were being discussed. Women's hormonal cycles were brought up with the warning that even though that could be the source of a woman's being grumpy/offended, it was not best to say so to one's wife when she was annoyed at you. Why? The reason is that it invalidates her having genuine reason to be offended--there's something wrong with her for being hurt--and denies your responsibility in that. It's patronizing.

It is possible that economic hardship has indeed resulted in certain people clinging to God and guns and being resentful of immigrants. However, the underlying assertion is the same as above, namely that there is something wrong with the rural Pennsylvanians thinking the way they do, that it is obviously an indefensible position, and so there must be some external reason causing them to act so bizarrely.

I find it ironic that such "brilliant" people feel free to use psychological explanations on others and think they are being so smart, while they violate a basic principle of psychology and counseling by invalidating those they are explaining.

Good luck with that. In one of my classes the students are all supposed to do presentations in the last week. Two students stopped coming to class a while ago and two more didn't show up for their presentations or turn in the rough drafts of their papers. I find myself asking "what are they thinking?" As it stands, I have four people in that class who are staring an F in the face. And I know what I'll get as an excuse -- "I'm depressed" or some such.

Whenever I hear that, I want to say "yes, and if I were as much of a f***-up as you are, I'd be depressed too."

I have one student whose father keeps calling and emailing to check up on him. Of course this kid is probably the worst offender in the "I can't get my butt out of bed and into a seat" department. Part of me wonders whether or not the fact this kid cannot get it together derives from the fact that his parents as still, at 21, covering for him. I mean, I can't imagine my dad calling one of professors in college to ask about how I was doing.

The other thing is they all have cars, and I know they're not paying the insurance. Isn't there still that "B"average thing on auto insurance for college students? If nothing else, the fear of losing that kept me engaged with classwork.

Pinellas County woman finds 8 foot alligator in her kitchen

The Associated Press

OLDSMAR, Fla. - This alligator made himself at home in Pinellas County.

Authorities say 69-year-old Sandra Frosti of Oldsmar found the 8-foot long alligator in her kitchen late Monday night.

She says the gator must have pushed through the back porch screen door and went inside through an open sliding glass door. It then walked through the living room, down a hall and into the kitchen.

A trapper with Animal Capture of Florida removed the alligator, which had been cut when a plate was knocked to the ground. But no one inside the house was injured.

I don't know how old your appliances are, but we replaced the rather old electric stove and small fridge that came with the house (age 78) with new, energy efficient models and saved quite literally $80 a month. (We live in VT.) Our electric has been running ~$125 for the winter for stove, washer, dryer, fridge, 3 computers + peripherals, 4 TVs plus assorted gaming systems and two electric space heaters we use in the schoolroom and winterized porch. Just got 150 gallons of oil. last delivery was mid February for the same amount. Since this is new, I wonder what causes it.

Yes there absolutely is. Parent's of "children" over 18 are not entitled to access to academic records unless the student gives written permission. Even if Daddy and Mommy pay all the tuition.

Tehran, 23 April (AKI) – Former Tehran police chief, Reza Zarei, who was arrested in a brothel in March, has attempted suicide in prison.

Zarei was reportedly transferred to hospital for urgent treatment after the suicide attempt.

News of the suicide has not been confirmed officially but was published on the Iranian site, Peyknet.

Zarei was found with six naked women when he was arrested in a Tehran brothel last month.

The former police chief was responsible for the moralisation campaign spearheaded by president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The so-called "public security plan" is aimed at enforcing Islamic dress code and fight 'indecent' behavior by young people in the Iranian capital.

The moralisation campaign led by Zarei resulted in the arrest of hundreds of young men and women accused of failing to respect the Islamic code

True to the liberal penchant for blaming every ill in the world on the USA, ABC News has produced a “report” claiming that the increasing number of guns and drug cartel violence in Mexico is all the fault of... the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. That’s right, it isn’t the drug dealers and killers in Mexico that are at fault, it’s James Madison and the Founding Father’s fault! Now, before you imagine that I am employing hyperbole in my introduction, just look at the title of their piece: “U.S. Guns Arming Mexican Drug Gangs; Second Amendment to Blame?”

It has gotten demonstrably worse since 2000. The only times I ever saw parents before then was a graduation. Since then they are on campus more and more and calling and leaving messages. This week I've talked with two parents who wanted to make appointments to schedule their kid's classes. I wanted to ask "do you still wipe their butts too?" but I'm afraid that they'll say "but of course!"

Infantalize your children and don't be surprised when they still act like toddlers at 21.

Why do people do this? The depression babies were all skinflints. Most of today's parents of college age children are fifty or so. They came of age during the late 70's.

FIRPA stipulates that college student records remain private. That said, if the student signs a release, then the parents can get all the information they want. And from what I'm seeing, more and more parents are demanding that their kids sign the release. Regulations (both FIRPA and ADA) were also relaxed after the VaTech shooting, mainly because it was difficult for instructors and advisors to get information about their own students.

I don't have any problem with the people footing the bill having a chance to see things like grades, but it has really gone too far. I'm seeing more and more kids (they don't act like adults even if they are legally adults) who are totally unwilling or incapable of taking responsibility for their actions. "W" is becoming a common grade, and no shortage of students will just fail and then petition to get a "W" retroactively.

Oh I agree with you Lucius. I have been saying for many years that children do not automatically turn 18 and magically become responsible out of the blue - or know how to make a decision. These are skills to be learned and this generation as a whole seems to have almost no concept of personal responsibility.

But then we see a lot of that. Look at Obama: excuses, mis-speaks, "guilt by association" but not a single word of personal responsibility for his own words, actions or associations.

Should we blame Carter or disco?

Both.

Actually, Carter and disco (along with ferns, quiche, and earth shoes) were all symptoms of the mainlining of idiotic leftism in the butt end of the sixties. Besides, all of these kids were raised by day-care workers from what I can tell. The parents drop them off at "school" when they're 6 weeks old and then pick them up in time to drive them to college 18 years later. The parents feel guilty for having abandoned them to seek their own personal fulfillment and now are making up for it by enabling their worst habits.

As for the kids, as one colleague I know put it, the best way for smart kids to get even with their parents is to flunk out. Of course it's a losing strategy in the long run, but (or so I gather) psychically fulfilling as a form of revenge.

I suppose it depends on what sort of jobs you are talking about. I don't really think that you can support low to no skill manufacturing jobs in this country on US level wages, and remain competitive. Consumers are going to naturally gravitate toward products that have the lower price for the same perceived quality.

Sometimes that is true. But for many families, by the time you add up the cost of daycare along with the extra gas, clothing & lunch that mom has to buy in order to work plus the extra taxes the family will pay, two working parents is actually a losing proposition. Not to mention the extra cost of food because mom has less time to cook so she serves more expensive pre-prepared stuff. The trouble is, many families don't bother to stop to do the math first because they think they "need" two paychecks.

The leader of an Indonesian sect who had controversially claimed he was a prophet was jailed for four years for contempt against Islam on Wednesday.

Ahmad Mushaddeq alias Abu Salam, 63, leader of the Al Qiyadah Al Islamiyah sect, was "guilty of showing contempt in public against a religion recognized by the state," Judge Zahrul Rabaid told a packed courtroom.

The verdict was greeted by religious chanting by hundreds of followers who had crammed South Jakarta district court since early in the morning. A police officer said 2,000 people were at the venue.

Mushaddeq's claim violated a central Islamic tenet that the Prophet Muhammad is the last prophet and will not be followed by any other messengers from God

If Mommy worked in the early 80's virtually anywhere in this country it was because she was invested in a career or the kids were in school and she was bored.

After 15 years of marriage, a neighbor told the wife that her son found nude pictures of her husband on the internet. The Egyptian wife logged in to see her husband exposing his body and chatting with foreign women, according to press reports Tuesday.

Unable to confront her husband, the wife resorted to a family court, which summoned the husband.

But he failed to show up and accused the wife of slandering him, calling her crazy. The wife filed for khol'a (the wife’s right to divorce), and she was granted divorce, Saudi daily Riyadh reported.

You don't know what those parents' early working lives were like. Perhaps many needed two incomes just to stay afloat.

But, I don't wanna' drag this into a debate about working parents.

In the end, it's not the working, or even the day care; it's the way that the parents deal with it. Both my parents worked, and the message I got from them was "we all have responsibilities, and that includes you." The students I see get the message "we're sorry that we're never around; here -- have a PlayStation, a flat screen TV, an Audi Quattro, unlimited texting on your $400 phone, and college tuition so we'll feel better about ourselves."

My nine-year-old started asking yesterday when he can start earning money weeding the neighbors' yards. If I hadn't been driving, I'd have kissed him right then and there.

Not all familiies.

Mandy, I lived in one of the most economically depressed areas of the entire country in the 80's. A full third of the kids in one town I lived in got free or reduced price school lunch. I ran a food pantry for the feds during that time. Overwhelmingly, mothers of small children from two parent families did not put them into daycare and did not hold jobs outside of the home until at least the time the children were in school. Exception: women who were very vested in lucrative careers who could afford to pay for the relatively scarce and expensive day care.

At the time, daycare was a very new phenomenon in most of the country. And expensive.

NEW DELHI: Ahead of President Mahmoud Ahamdinejad’s visit here next week, India yesterday asked the US not to give unsolicited “guidance” on the course of its centuries-old relations with Iran and advocated dialogue to resolve the impasse over the Iranian nuclear programme.
“Neither country needs any guidance on the future conduct of bilateral relations as both countries believe that engagement and dialogue alone lead to peace,” external affairs ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna said in response to prescriptive comments made by the spokesman of the US State Department.
“It is important that the genius of each nation living in a particular region is respected and allowed to flower to meet the expectations of enriching relations with neighbours,” Sarna said, registering India’s displeasure at the perceived attempt by the US to meddle in its foreign policy, especially in the context of its ties with Iran.
“Both nations are perfectly capable of managing all aspects of their relationship with the appropriate degree of care and attention,” Sarna said while stressing on civlisational ties between India and Iran which span centuries.

You are really lucky. Being a single parent can be a very tough row to hoe. On the other hand, since you've no one to blame but yourself and no one to expect to take care of things but yourself, it is pretty easy to maintain focus on parenting rather than expecting your partner to take care of it as so often happens.

Good morning, Lizards.
A beautiful morning along the Lake Michigan shoreline, 51 degrees with another warm and sunny day on tap.

Started my certification course yesterday, and early this afternoon I have an interview with a local agency wanting to hire me to join their home healthcare team.... the HR manager told me that I'm exactly what they are looking for. If they do hire me I'll be able to start work right away, on a schedule that will still allow me to finish up the coursework. Very good news for my family, as we won't have to worry about selling the house now.

From [Link: www.thereligionofpeace.com,...] the latest offerings from the religion of slice, dice, hack, shoot and maim:

4/21/2008 (Baidoa, Somalia) - A government official is assassinated by Islamic terrorists.

4/21/2008 (Mosul, Iraq) - A teenager is among three civilians cut down by militant Sunnis.

The "deadly acts of terror since 9/11" counter reads: 10965

Jihad Attacks: 45
Dead Bodies: 336

The heavy-handed thuggish morality police in Iran bust down the door of a private birthday party, and arrest 75 young people:

Tehran, 22 April(AKI) - Seventy-five young people accused of 'immoral acts' have been arrested by police at a birthday party in the city of Shiraz in southwestern Iran.

The young men and women were accused of "immoral acts" and of holding a "non-authorised promiscuous gathering" said the chief commander of the police forces, Ali Moayyedi.

"These young people were dancing, drinking alcohol and listening to forbidden western music," said Moayyedi.

It is not the first time police have raided private parties and arrested people.

While they may not approve of such behaviour at parties, some Muslim clerics consider these kinds of police raids unjustified and an intrusion into people's private lives.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A Frankfort man was arrested on drug trafficking charges early Sunday morning after he was reportedly pumping gas into an imaginary vehicle. According to the arrest report, Metro Police arrived at a gas station at First and Jefferson streets in Louisville and immediately smelled marijuana coming from Joshua L. Officers searched Moore and found “two large baggies” of marijuana and a large amount of Ecstasy. Police said Moore also had a cell phone and a large amount of money, which they said was indicative of trafficking.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Bush administration plans to brief U.S. lawmakers behind closed doors on Thursday about North Korea’s suspected nuclear cooperation with Syria, congressional sources said on Tuesday.

The White House has said little in public about the issue since Israel conducted a mysterious September 6 air strike inside Syria that U.S. media reports said was directed at a nuclear site that may have been built with North Korean assistance.

While a handful of lawmakers were briefed on the issue last year, the decision to widen the circle substantially comes as Washington appears closer to a deal for North Korea to provide a long overdue declaration of its nuclear programs.

Once the poor, communist state has produced the declaration, the United States is expected to ease sanctions on Pyongyang that flow from its presence on the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism and the U.S. Trading With the Enemy Act.

Good Morning Lizards

Looks like Illinois Democratic Governor Blagojevich has himself a little problem. I mention that he is a Democrat, cause the Chicago Sun Times has somehow forgotten to mention that. As opposed to when former Gov. and general dirtball George Ryan was getting prosecuted, when his being a Republican was boldfaced in the Sun Times headlines.

But I digress.

Ex-aide: I paid gov for my job

A former top official in Gov. Blagojevich's administration said Tuesday the governor gave him a $127,000-a-year state job in exchange for pouring cash into Blagojevich's campaign fund, including tens of thousands of dollars out of his own pocket.

That bombshell from Ali Ata came as the onetime director of the Illinois Finance Authority pleaded guilty in a deal in which prosecutors plan to have him testify in the ongoing corruption trial of former Blagojevich fund-raiser Tony Rezko.

At the very least, I think our current Gov. has a real good chance of becoming a guest of the State at one of our finer correctional facilites for a while in the future.

But buried down at the bottom of the article comes this:

Ata gave a total of $65,000 to Blagojevich's gubernatorial campaign fund. He also contributed $5,000 to Democratic White House hopeful Barack Obama, who gave that money to charity after Ata's indictment last year.

This guy Ata is going to be singing like a bird. Just something to keep an eye on going forward.

Yes, I always found it far easier to simply deal with it all myself than to deal with an idiot that left things up to me and then complained about every last decision.

Every year I sit for a few minutes on the anniversary of the day I threw him out and the anniversary of the day the divorce was final and think about the decisions I made. Even in the very hardest of years - and there have been some real monsters - I have never regretted it for a single fraction of a second.

I cannot recall the date that the final order was signed! I think I remember which year it was. Maybe not. Maybe I should drag out the final order. Nah.

I agree.
And this is an interesting discussion.

I stayed home for 20 years to take care of my three children. My ex and I both felt that it was the best thing for them, and there's no doubt in my mind that they benefitted from having a mom at home 24/7.

When I left the workforce, I was a highly successful administrative professional earning good money. During my years at home I worked very hard to learn new skills, maintain my current skills and keep up on software advancements because I thought that I would be able to maintain my employability. Was I ever wrong.

I'm now a 47-year old single mom trying to finish raising my children solo, and I'm having a very hard time re-entering the workforce with a 20 year gap in my work history. I have the skills that many employers are looking for, but that 20 year gap in my work history is insurmountable when I'm competing with college students half my age and people who have been in the workforce for years with no gaps in their work history.

I could go on and on about the looks and comments that I've gotten from HR managers when I tell them I stayed out of the workforce for 20 years by choice, to raise my children. You can slmost see words like "lazy", "unmotivated" and "unskilled" running through their heads, while they thank you for your time and show you the door.

It's a sad thing when you pay a professional price for doing the right thing by your children, but its' also an unfortunate reality.

I'd like to think that I can advise my daughter to stay at home when her children start to arrive and commit to full-time parenting, but I can't bring myself to do it because I know the reality at the other end... if she leaves the workforce, even for a job as noble as parenting, she's going to pay a very dear price for it later.

SANTA ANA, Calif. — Former Olympic ice dancer Pasha Grishuk was drugged with the so-called date-rape drug GHB during a business meeting at a Southern California resort hotel but she was able to seek help after spotting a pill in her drink, a sheriff's spokesman said Tuesday.

Grishuk, who won two Olympic gold medals for Russia in the 1990s, was at the St. Regis Monarch Beach on April 12 when she began to feel ill and numb, said Orange County sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino.

Grishuk was at a meeting with at least one man and first had a drink in a lounge while waiting for a table, Amormino said. They later moved to a table, and when Grishuk began feeling ill she noticed the dissolving pill at the bottom of her red wine, he said.

Iranians do not hold a positive view on the Chinese products, head of Trade Development Organization of Iran said on Wednesday.

Speaking On the sideline of a meeting of United Nation Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Accra, Ghana, Mehdi Ghazanfari, who is taking part in the event, disclosed that presence of low-quality Chinese goods on Iranian markets have made people change their views on the Chinese products.

He also conferred with some high ranking Chinese officials and called for a halt to export of low-quality Chinese goods to the Islamic Republic.

Rose, if your skills are as you described, and I have no reason to think otherwise, I sure wish you lived near enough to work for us! People with life experience generally make much better employees, and the kids coming right out of school these days are nearly unemployable. They are functionally illiterate and convinced that I somehow owe them a job. We have had *kids* who were genuinely shocked when we fired them for not coming to work. The attitude is 'hey, I was here three days last week. That's more than half!'

I raised four as a single mother. Money was always tight. I could give you a litany of my children's "sufferings" but in all honesty the biggest "suffering" they ever complained of was having to eat homemade cookies while their friends got nice store-bought ones.

My children learned some precious things that all the money in the world would never have taught them: how to do a days work, how to take responsibility for themselves and their own actions, how to budget & shop, how to save for what they wanted rather than buy on credit.

Stop whining and start setting an example for your children!

But don;t be planning on spending much time watching the Yanks in the playoffs this fall. They beat the White Sox last night yes, but they should have scored 20 runs on Contreras.

Contrereas is through, I wanted to go grab a bat and hit against him last night. He's at the same stage Mussina is, getting some outs with craftiness and pure stupidity by the hitters. That, and contreras was throwing a spitter they called a "forkball" last night.

He threw one last night to Abreu where I could see him loading up the ball on the tv. How he kept a straight face I'll never know. Ball broke down from neck high to the ankles in about 5 feet of horizontal travel.

That was a real good spitter.

Many pitchers wet wone up fromt ime to time, but Contreras was abusing the option last night.

By the way baseball fans, any time you see a pitch that drops from the neck to the ankles, it's not a "forkball", it's not a "split finger fastball", it's not a "knuckle curve", it's a spitter. You can't even make a scuff ball drop that fast.

And I'm not talking about things I think I know, I'm talking about things I've done. I've thrown them all, in competition. The hardest part of throwing a spitter, once you get the feel of how to do it, is keep a straight face in front of the ump.

Only way you can get a ball to drop that much that fast is with a little assistance.

Real, I'll send you another email. I think you did not get one or two.

The material things your children are being "deprived" of right now are in the end nothing more than dust they will not even recall in twenty years. Your example they will model and take to their graves.

Ozzie's been flying high since, oh, about 1960, hasn't he? LOL

I wonder how much he's spent on drugs during his life.

So, Hillary wins PA... I still believe that she is not going to win the nomination and in fact, I really don't want her to...

I think if she could come back and win the nom. she will be really tought to beat in a general election... Looking at all of the skeletons in Obama's closet and everything some oif think he stands for and against, I just think that in order to keep a Dem out of the White House, I would rather have Obama in the general election as opposed to Hillary...

Folks, two predictions, and ya heard 'em here first:

1) The world will not end within the next, say, 50 years.

2) There will be no food riots in the United States of America any time in the next, say, 50 years.

No one said any of that
