Congressional Candidate Speaks to Nazis on Hitler's Birthday

Wed, Apr 23, 2008 at 12:02:39 pm PDT

Absolutely disgusting. Who let this Neanderthal into the Republican Party? Worst Campaign Idea Ever?

CROWN POINT, Ind. - If fans of Hitler held a party, and a candidate for federal office attended, would anybody notice?

Apparently, yes.

U.S. Congressional candidate Tony Zirkle is facing criticism from one of his primary opponents, and a host of people on the Internet, for speaking at an event over the weekend that celebrated Adolf Hitler’s birthday.

Zirkle confirmed to The News-Dispatch on Monday he spoke Sunday in Chicago at a meeting of the Nationalist Socialist Workers Party, whose symbol is a swastika.

When asked if he was a Nazi or sympathized with Nazis or white supremacists, Zirkle replied he didn’t know enough about the group to either favor it or oppose it. “This is just a great opportunity for me to witness,” he said, referring to his message and his Christian belief.

He also told WIMS radio in Michigan City that he didn’t believe the event he attended included people necessarily of the Nazi mindset, pointing out the name isn’t Nazi, but Nationalist Socialist Workers Party.

The Crown Point Republican spoke in front of about 56 “white activists” at an event honoring the birth of Hitler. The German leader was responsible for the genocide of millions of Jews and others during World War II.

Zirkle said the group asked him to speak to discuss the effect of pornography and prostitution on young, white women and girls. ...

When asked if meeting with Nazis was a danger to his political career, Zirkle said he was willing to take the chance.

“That’s the risk you have to take to get your point across,” Zirkle said. “If the Black Panthers or the Jewish Zionists want me to speak about these issues, I’ll do it.”

In any event, the party really needs to revoke his membership and take away his decoder ring, yesterday.

Last thread I was mocking the ignorance of Zirkle, or perhaps feigned ignorance, that Nazis aren't the same as Nationalist Socialist Workers Party.

But it appears the reporter wasn't too sure either, else why they need to point out the symbol is a swastika? Everyone knows the swastika is the Nazi symbol. (Not everyone knows it had other previous meanings).

But this following sentence almost seems as if the reporter is trying to make the connection between the Nationalist Socialist Workers Party and Nazis by using the symbol. Meaning he/she doesn't understand they are one and the same.

Zirkle confirmed to The News-Dispatch on Monday he spoke Sunday in Chicago at a meeting of the Nationalist Socialist Workers Party, whose symbol is a swastika.

Well here in Washington state the legislature decided it would be dang peachy if you decided if you got the big (R) after your name or not. Parties shmarties. Couple that with the change to top two primary vote getters go on the ballot.

Given the left-leaning politics of this state, and a couple of ringers ready to go in as the "republican" candidate, suddenly you have a split R vote both of which don't get enough votes. Bingo! Two democrats on the final ballot. I can see it coming already.

When asked if he was a Nazi or sympathized with Nazis or white supremacists, Zirkle replied he didn’t know enough about the group to either favor it or oppose it. “This is just a great opportunity for me to witness,” he said, referring to his message and his Christian belief.

When I said Trent Lott was the most embarrassing thing Republicans had to answer for, I was wrong...

re: #92 wolfie

Thanks for the info.
They MUST do so and do it loudly and publicly and NOW.

They have, at least locally. Note that the Indiana primary hasn't happened yet, he won't be the Republican nominee, someone else is running.

Vlaams Belang has considerable support among some "conservatives" here in the US

Oh, yeah, you can't take three steps down Main Street, USA without tripping over a "Support Vlaams Belang!" sign.

Calm down, Killgore.

re: #68 Silhouette

Everyone knows the swastika is the Nazi symbol. (Not everyone knows it had other previous meanings).

Our yearbook when I attended New Mexico State University was called the Swastika. Before that, at Purdue, our yearbook had a hammer and sickle. I need to go back to school to see what I get next.

re: #62 Ringo the Gringo

Look at his itinerary:

5. Monday, April 21, 2008 - 1:00 p.m. - 110 N. Main St., South Bend, IN. Press Conference. I will be releasing Part I of my position on the "War on Terror" I will also reveal my 2nd middle name, HVFVGPD which another candidate’s campaign manager guessed correctly. Finally, the original 1st Edition Penthouse magazine will be shredded so long as two reporters and 1 television station from the press attends. If the press turns out in mass (unlikely), I have a source who may be willing to donate a complete or near complete set of Penthouses.

This man is insane.

What type of personality, other than a sadist, sado-masochist, or psychotic, uses Hitler and/or the swastika as an organizing figure?

Wait... you think this is the first example of a flesh and blood moby?
Cause he can't possibly be serious. Even if he was Nazi-sympathetic, he can't be that ignorant of what the rest of the country thinks, can he?
And c'mon, everyone knows that's a Nazi event after, like, 1.5 seconds, right?
Can't be serious, isn't funny enough for the Onion... I'm so confused.
