Does the Mainstream Media Pay Terrorists?

Thu, Apr 24, 2008 at 8:38:07 am PDT

Steven Emerson asks the question: Do Hamas Columnists Get Paid?

The Washington Post is refusing to disclose this information.

Did the Post pay its standard fee for Zahar’s column? The Post compensates guest writers with a minimum $200 fee, spokeswoman Rima Calderon said. Other factors, including whether the column was solicited or had multiple authors, could increase the amount. So, what did the Post pay Zahar?

“As I suspected, we don’t make this information public,” Calderon said in an e-mail.

Payment of any amount could violate U.S. law banning material support or other transactions with the designated terrorist group Hamas, said Jeffrey Breinholt, senior fellow and national security law director at the International Assessment and Strategy Center. Breinholt knows the law well. Before taking leave last summer, he was the deputy chief of the Department of Justice’s counterterrorism section.

The 1996 Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act (AEDPA) was passed in direct response to terrorist acts by Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad aimed at thwarting U.S. peace efforts. It created a list of specially designated terrorist groups and individuals and outlawed providing any support to them. The International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) gives the President the power to prohibit transactions with people or entities deemed enemies of the United States.

“They could say payments to individual Hamas leaders do not qualify as support to Hamas, but that’s fairly laughable,” Breinholt said.

No one is suggesting the papers are in legal jeopardy. But it may be time to rethink the editorial approach. This is the latest in a series of examples in which major American newspapers yield space for Hamas propaganda. Last July, the Los Angeles Times published “Hamas’ Stand,” by the group’s deputy political director Mousa Abu Marzook. Before that, the Post and New York Times published columns by Hamas spokesman Ahmed Yousef on the same day.

The deadstream media get paid by the Gang of Saud to publish their infomercials.

I seem to recall that some folks had asked that very question when these Hamas op-eds were first published. It's good that someone is still asking - and demanding answers. The editorial boards should be held accountable for funding terrorists (and that's what they're doing when they give money to spokeshacks for terrorist groups on the State Department list).

Hmm, are you trying to get Reuters to come a calling again? This seems like the perfect Reuters-bait.

Trying to keep it clean.

19 Ben Hur  Thu, Apr 24, 2008 8:49:33am

It's not suprising.

We know that the BBC has Hamas operatives who work for them (remember they sent him to find their dear kidnapped journo).

The International Red Cross employs Hamas members- and admit it.

My father told me years ago that he stopped watching 60 Minutes because Mike Wallace was busted paying Pali children to start throwing rocks at Israeli soldiers so they could film it.

I've never found anything about Wallace actually doing that, but I know that it happens with other media outlets.

20 Ben Hur  Thu, Apr 24, 2008 8:50:04am

It's ironic that Hamas would be paid in shekels.

The MSM has been co-operating with terrorists for a long time. In fact, I remember reading stories where MSM 'journalists' were embedded with Iraqi 'insurgents', or 'militatant'. The photographers were gleefully snapping pictures of terrorists posing with their RPG's and mortars.

That, my friend, is treason.

We should treat these 'journalists' exactly the same way we treat the enemy. If you're found videotaping and embedding with the enemy - whether it be an Israeli tank, a few punk insurgents, or the NV anti-aircraft team - you should expect to be killed on the battlefield.

Only the liberal media would be so simultaneously stupid and morally bankrupt as to not only serve as a willing mouthpiece for Hamas propaganda, but to PAY HAMAS for the privilege.

It wouldn't surprise me if the WaPost and NY Times now engage in a bidding war to see who can carry the most water for Palestinian terror groups.

Some of us ISrael advocates have been screaming about that for years.

Even before Eason's admission.

It was brutally obvious that ACCESS TRUMPS TRUTH all over the place.

See CNN Bureau in Havana, Syria, Lebanon, Saddam's Iraq, and EVERYWHERE in the Arab world.

It's all total BS.

You think Brent Sadler or Ben Wiedeman are going to tell the truth or criticise their Arab hosts with their handlers standing there?

They know (because they still do it today) that they have to be kind to those regimes or they'll be thrown out.

So, why have laws? So, why have a Department of Justice? So, who gives a rat's ass anymore?

This one is for Private Matt Maupin, a local soldier captured 4 yrs ago
and listed as missing in action. His remains were finally discovered
this past weekend March 29-30, 2008). He would have been 24 this July.
The insurgents put him on video after they captured him and televised
it. Shortly thereafter another video was seen of a soldier as he was
beheaded. But his family firmly believed it wasn't him. All
we know is that his remains have been found, whether or not he was
actually beheaded, we don't know (and they complain about how we treat
our captives). But his family now has closure. President Bush called
and offered his condolences. Matt's family has been to the White House
several times at the request of the President. His family is not mad
that he went and sacrificed his life. They are extremely proud of him.
His family and many of their friends even marched in our local annual
Baseball Opening Day Parade on Monday, proudly carrying Flags in honor
of their son.
I think President John F. Kennedy expressed it rather well when he said,
"Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your
country."

God Bless Matt Maupin, and all of our soldiers, Veterans,
past, present, future, living and deceased. Long Live Freedom.

I'M not breaking this one. If I get it a 1000
times,I'll forward it a 1000 times!

Let us pray...
Prayer chain for our Military.... Don't break it!

Please send this on after a short prayer. Prayer for
our soldiers Don't break it!

Prayer:
'Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect
them as they protect us Bless them and their families for the selfless
acts they perform for us in our time of need. Amen.'

Prayer Request: When you receive this, please stop for
a moment and say a prayer for our troops around the world. There is
nothing attached. Just send this to people in your address book. Do not
let it stop with you. Of all the gifts you could give a Marine, Soldier,
Sailor, Airman, & others deployed in harm's way, prayer is the very best one.
GOD BLESS YOU FOR PASSING IT ON!

It is outrageous that the Washington Post or NY Times would pay the 'Palestinian' and other terrorists.

For the work they do, the terrorists should be paying the press and media.

Yes, then the Post continued publishing the secret Johnson Administration Pentagon Papers. See excerpt...
* * *

Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers Top
Daniel Ellsberg was an employee of the Defense Department who, in 1971, leaked a classified assessment of the Vietnam War prepared by the Johnson Administration to the press. This 7,000 page document, comprising 47 volumes, which came to be known as the Pentagon Papers, cast doubt on the justification for American entry into the war and it revealed that senior government officials had serious misgivings about the war.
When the New York Times began to publish the Pentagon Papers on 13 June 1971, the Nixon Administration was furious. After asking the Times to voluntarily cease publication, the government sued the New York Times and the Washington Post, which began publishing excerpts on 18 June 1971. The United States Supreme Court agreed to hear the case and, on 30 June 1971 ruled 6-3 in New York Times Company v. U.S. that the newspapers could continue to publish the leaked documents.

It's great to have Mr. Colmes asking questions couched or dripping in liberal cliches and liberal assumptions.

It helps to see these liberal & often foolish elitist ideas exposed and debated or countered by other people.

Well, if he achieved what he set out to, it would be bad.
For people paying attention, he did achieve something - making himself look like an even bigger asshole.
Saying Hamas is willing to recognize Israel, followed immediately by Hamas saying they wouldn't.
Calling Condi Rice and the State Dept liars (well, they are, but I doubt it this time) for saying they told him not to go and he didn't hear that.

You got to keep up with Hamas.

The truce is on again.

The best part is that they have no problem spelling out exactly what they intend to do.

They need to rest. They need to train. They need to rearm.

Lets have a truce.

And if Israel thinks that may not be such a good idea, Israel is the warmonger.

The LA Times does even worse than that.

Published an editorial Tuesday questioning whether John McCain deserves to be paid his $58,000/yr disability pension from the US military.

Disgusting smear questioned first the ability of a "disabled" person to hold the office while simultaneously inferring that McCain was fit and should not be paid for a disability.

That's a bad case of dissonance.

There could be a chance that American media pay the terrorists... I believe it because MSM hate America and love the enemies of the US

re: #29 Nevergiveup

Unfortunately there is nothing new or surprising here. How often have we recently heard, as opposed to journalists in WW2, that they do NOT consider themselves American but must remain neutral? What a load of crap!

Well if they aren't American, then they can be deported. Americans should not be giving aid to the enemy.

Wasn't there an old story from the War of 1812 called "The Man Without a Country"? I believe that the story dealt with the issue of what an American citizenship requires.

There are lots of places these non-Americans could go. Libya would be one good place. Syria would be another. Also lots of places in South America that are quite nice. These gringos could live in the lap of luxury and write their dispatches in comfort.
