And there I was lamenting the reappearence of Aaron McGruder's Rev. Wright-esque dreck on Cartoon Network earlier tonight as the proverbial shir hit the proverbial bladed cooling device.

I remember a commercial in the early 70s featuring this song in the background of black and white children playing together.

Can't we all agree to start from that point and move forward?

Life is a lot more complicated now than then, for all ages.
A couple of months ago, my son and d.i.l. were talking about living in another city. My 4 y/o grandaughter said: "Then you have to buy me a cell" They said: "why".
"So I can text my friends!"

I was sitting on my hands the last thread. First, it's never a good idea for me to comment on Europe, all things considered. It's not only that Charles might ban me after lo, these many years, but I live in fear of saying something that might embarrass him and LGF.

Aside from that I'm seriously afflicted with the "bread of our affliction" today. I really shouldn't say anything!

Look, twat...you're simply too ignorant and stupid to talk to. You would have to have that third brain cell over and above the two you need to breathe in and out to make it worthwhile to talk to you. No question you can possibly have could be simple enough for you to grasp the answer to.

Speaking plainly, you're a dumb fuck, all right. I can't help you. No one can. Next incarnation, ask for a mind rather than a larger asshole to accomodate a bigger dick.

Whoo hoo, things aren't that bad here in the old US, I went looking for a job, put in one app and three resumes, and got two. I'll be working full time with the developmentally disabled, and I took on a part time 99 year old, plus I'll still be the pool operator at my Y... looking forward to getting the weekends back for myself and doing some fishing.

Now there's probably ticks on my "furry son". Do I get to blame back, or is that not such a good idea considering the distance I could fall from the Penthouse to the outhouse?

Yup, just plain bat shit crazy.........If human nature evolved over millions of years, then conflict is hardwired into our genes. Survival of the fittest being a genetic trait means that the Socialist/Marxist Utopian dream of equality is a physical impossibility for the human species.

Since according to evolutionary theory significant physical traits take hundreds of thousands to millions of years to develop any attempt to force the Socialist/Marxist Utopian dream upon mankind means inflicting the human race with untold misery for hundreds of thousands to millions of years while those traits which would allow the Socialist/Marxist Utopian dream to flourish are developed.

This is nothing less than insanity.

More threats. This is "supposed" to be a big kick the infidels out weekend. It is the celebration of when the Russians left. The Danish and Norwegian embassies are closed and their people moved to an undisclosed location.

Thanks for the reply. Hope the don't succeed. I heard about the Danish and Norwegians but never heard why until now.

Socialists/Marxists are people in the deepest of denial, having rejected god, they are forced to believe in the most improbable and ridiculous of theories...

They are also thieves. They want to use the power of the government to confiscate your assets and give it to themselves. They use high sounding language like "universal health care" and such but that's what it's all about. To take what is yours, and make it theirs.

Both socialists and communists have the same end result in mind, specifically the public ownership (and they define themselves as "the public") of the private means of production.

They just disagree on how best to do that. Commmunists do it with a gun and prisions. Socialists do it with government regulation/confiscatory policies disguised as free services.

re: #187 doriangrey

I don't buy that socialism/communism is even a Utopian dream of equality. I think it is just another way to say "we are all created equal but some of us are more equal than others and entitled to much more." Just another con job to present a nation with a renewed & enlarged serf class by eliminating the middle class and concentrating all wealth in the hands of the "state" controlled by the powerful few.

'Independent' writer wins Orwell award

Friday, 25 April 2008

The Independent columnist and reporter Johann Hari has won the Orwell Prize for political writing, the award's judges announced last night. The prize, inaugurated in 1993 and given annually to a journalist and to an author, aims to reward those who have come closest to achieving George Orwell's aim of making "political writing into an art". The judges called his work, "elegant and effective political analysis".

The book prize went to the Palestinian human rights activist Raja Shehadeh.

On the politician discussion that got someone banned- not that I read that thread- but basically how many really good people go into politics anymore? At lower levels, I guess so but at even a fairly low level(state delegate- we get commercials even for those positions) these days, you have to prostitute yourself(or sell yourself to anyone) to raise money and whatever beliefs or scruples you have are traded for votes from the public and then votes from your colleagues. I know the guy in question went way way overboard(although he is not the first politician to go to lower than pond scum for votes) but I think politics is becoming dirtier every year.

Krauthammer:

Obama's 'Distractions'?

Snip:

What is Obama to do? Dismiss all such questions about his associations and attitudes as "distractions." And then count on his acolytes in the media to wage jihad against those who have the temerity to raise these questions. As if the character and beliefs of a man who would be president are less important than the "issues." As if some political indecency was committed when Obama was prevented from going through his latest -- 21st and likely last -- primary debate without being asked about Wright or Ayers or the tribal habits of gun-toting, God-loving Pennsylvanians.

Take Ayers. Obama makes it sound as if the relationship consists of having run into each other at the DMV. In fact, Obama's political career was launched in a 1995 meeting at Ayers's home. Obama's own campaign says that they maintain "friendly" relations.

Obama's defense is that he was 8 when Ayers and his Weather Underground comrades were planting bombs at the Pentagon, the U.S. Capitol and other buildings. True. But Obama was 40 when Ayers said publicly that he doesn't regret setting bombs. Indeed, he said, "I feel we didn't do enough."

The problem with communism is not so much the ideal as it is the practical result - poverty and enslavement of the masses. Conversely, the greatness of capitalism is not so much the ideal as it is the practical result - freedom and a decent standard of living for the masses.
My late father used to point out to me that the Soviet Constitution was the most democratic and noble one in the world. But totally and utterly perverted and ignored in practice.

“Citizens of the USSR are guaranteed freedom of conscience, that is, the right to profess or not to profess any religion, and to conduct religious worship or atheistic propaganda.”

NY State to require online retailers to charge sales tax if selling to NY people.

Eh, I'm on the fence. On one hand, why are you charging NY sales tax on an item sold in another state, just because the buyer happens to be in NY?

What about New Yorkers who are on vacation? Charge NY Sales tax? Or does it just apply to people evil enough to shop in their pajammas?

On the other hand, as a supporter of a consumption tax rather than an income tax, I don't have a problem with people paying taxes on things they buy over the internet.

I just think it may be a bit out of reach of a state to charge taxes to a company not in their state, operating on the internet.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. The media once again provides seriously insightful headlines like Mugabe's Future Holds Key To Zimbabwe's crisis - as though this is news. I was reporting that a golden parachute was needed to get him to exit stage left a month ago, and now he's had more than enough time to regroup and begin crushing the opposition by hook and crook.

Meanwhile, in NYC, we just got word that the Sean Bell trial verdict was handed down and the three NYPD officers were found not guilty of manslaughter, reckless endangerment and assault. Bell was killed in a hail of 50 bullets, 31 fired by one of the three officers. Sharpton and the rest are likely to push for the feds to try and get another crack at the three, and a civil trial for damages is almost definitely in the works.

And yet, I can't imagine a universe where shooting on the range would be an identical experience to shooting at people on the street who are trying to either get away or hurt you.

Yeah, but he wasn't trying to get away or hurt them. He was in his car. stationary. reaching for what they thought was a gun.

I'm not saying that cops ought to be able to offhand shoot while flying through the air with pinpoint accuracy..... I'm just saying that 50 rounds ought to be enough to end someone's life.

I think what made this case so publically 'evil' was not that 3 cops shot someone they thought was reaching for a gun... people can understand that despite racist ranting by the sharpton crowd... but that 50 rounds were used.

Unlike movies, car doors don't stop bullets unless they are specifically designed to (as in bullet-resistant vehicles)

They each went through a couple mags and they didn't kill the guy.

There's a serious problem there.

Just based on what I was reading, having to sort through the anti-police pro-racism crap in too many articles, I think the cops were in the right. It seems that they overheard that he was getting a gun to 'end an argument' he had at the party, then apparently argued with the cops and then reached for something.

WHOLLY reasonable to assume he was reaching for a gun. In my mind, the cops are wholly justified.

Peace breaking out in Pakistan...

Four killed as car bomb targets Pakistani police station

Islamabad - At least four people, including two policeman, were killed on Friday in a bomb explosion near a police station in Pakistan's North-West Frontier Province, officials said. The bomb, which was planted in a car parked next to the police station, went off at 6:10 am (01:00 GMT) in Mardan city, the District Police Officer Tahir Khan said.

Fourteen policemen and 18 civilians were injured in the explosion that destroyed the police station building. Ten shops in the nearby market were demolished or damaged.

Eight of the injured were said to be in critical condition, health officials at a local hospital said.

It was the first major bomb blast since the formation of the new government, which is planning to sign peace accords with the Islamic militants who have killed more than 1,000 people in their suicide bombings campaign over the last 14 months.

The attack came two days after the top pro-Taliban leader, Baitullah Mehsud, ordered the militants to halt attacks on Pakistani security forces to clinch a peace deal with the government.

re: #329 sparrowlake

That is a pretty good summary of its posts. LOL.

I can't agree with you there. the problem with virtually every constitution in history (enforced or not), except for the US's, is that most are some mixture of the following:

1: granting some sort of "rights" to people.
or
2: granting some sort of service that requires something from either the government or other people (health care, housing, work, etc).

what makes the US Constitution is that the Government grants the People nothing. Rights are inherent. the Constitution says what the government may NOT do, not what it is obligated to do.

In terms of guarantees of services, they are not Rights. Rights cost nothing, and don't require anything from an outside party. My Right to free speech doesn't require anyone to give me a podium, megaphone, or printing press. My 2nd Amendment Rights don't obligate anyone to buy me a gun.

Rights "granted" by government can be taken away by government. Inherent ones cannot. Constitutions like the old Soviet Constitution, or even most of today's Europe have no nobility; not even in spirit. They are the deepest, most insidious form or Evil (with a capital E) that has ever been foisted on the human race. they serve not purpose other than to intentionally create a compliant citizenery, dependant on government for the most basic aspects of human life.

/I am not targeting you in any way, so please don't take anything I have said the wrong way. this is just a subject that I am passionate about. I have had many an argument with people who believe that some of the Communist constitutions are noble in spirit, but impractical in practice. they weren't impractical, they were Evil.

I believe that having sex with a person is the highest reward I can give them. Thus, I choose judiciously. The unsypathetic ones are the ones demanding the cop's heads roll for shooting someone who was reaching for something they thought was a gun.

If cops can keep the bullet count low through more accurate shooting, we'll stop seeing headlines like "Cops fire 50 rounds at man on wedding day"

I'm not going to sit here and defend my suggestion for range time and training.

I understand the need for ensuring that the threat is neutralized. I also understand that 50 rounds were fired and the guy died at/on the way to the hospital.

Yup, which is why the police need to work on lowering bullet count without reducing safety.

Since the public will never accept cops with .50 revolvers, that leaves us with shooting more accurately under pressure.

What is Hymenoplasty (Hymen Repair or Hymen Reconstruction)?

This is a surgery to repair a torn hymen due to intercourse or accidental tears. Hymen Repair is usually done for cultural or religious reasons. At The Manhattan Center for Vaginal Surgery understand the discreet nature of the need for this surgery and, as always, we are strictly confidential.

Does Insurance Cover The Costs of a Hymen Repair?

Insurance usually does not cover the cost of this surgery because it is considered elective.

Are Financing Plans Available?

Yes. We have arrangements with two financial institutions for no interest and low interest financing of your surgery.

Are Credit Cards Accepted For Hymen Repair?

Yes. We accept MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Discover.

re: #564 tfc3rid I'd guess it's cause most folks have never been in a gunfight and figure, ya know, 50 shots is more than enough to stop a person; and technically that ought to be true, but once the adrenyln starts flowing, you empty your magazine, reload and keep shooting until you're sure you and yours are safe.
But it's also one of the major reasons lots of folks, including me, resisted the NYPD going to the Glock instead of staying with the six-shooter .38 caliber handgun of old.

I support any action that makes a policeman more deadly with his firearm. Not only to end violent situations more quickly, but also as necessary to ward off the anti-gun anti-cop pricks.

There is the possibility of actual riots.... not because of white cops killing a black man (for the cops were minorities, 2 black)

Not because they killed someone they thought was reaching for a gun...

but because they fired 50 shots at a guy on his wedding day.

Sometimes this is a necessary evil. without some level of this in society you have anarchy. evil cannot always be avoided, but it should be minimized, and mitigated.

While I think it can BECOME evil, I don't think it is evil by nature of existing.

Remember who grants authority.

Evil does not grant authority, it can only pervert it.

sheep do need a shepard. It is not the shepard's fault of wolves steal away the job.

re: #273 Nevergiveup

Well I live by the motto that it is always 12:00 PM somewhere in the world. It's another great Navy Morning!

Thanks for reminding me, it's time to switch from coffee to rum. By the way, here's a quote we used to keep over the Stoker table on HMCS Nipigon:

No man will be a sailor who has contrivance enough to get himself in jail. For being in a ship is jail, with the chance of being drowned. A man in jail has more room, better food and commonly better company.
