Sunday Night Stats

Sun, Apr 27, 2008 at 8:11:27 pm PDT

Here are some statistics from our database server that I find exceptionally gratifying; this post can also be viewed as an open thread if you’re not in the mood for stats. These numbers indicate a very healthy server running at close to peak efficiency, which is why I’m so darn pleased.

The server has been running for 7 days, 9 hours, and some change (Change!), and here are the numbers that I like to see:

Queries: 142.0M
Slow: 5.3k
Se/In/Up/De(%): 90/02/02/00

Cache Hits: 104.2M
Ratio: 81.4%

Key Efficiency: 100.0%

Oh, and my key efficiency goes to 11.

After each tweak, of course, you have to restart the MySQL server, which is why it's only been up for 7 days.

I've spent 12 hours this weekend trying to update an AMD Socket 939 motherboard from an AMD 64 to and AMD 64X2.

As long as I'm only running one core Windows XP is happy. 2 cores, not at all.

So much for my brilliant plan of a quick, cheap performance increase.

If anyone has suggestions beyond latest BIOS, all the XP upgrades, latest AMD drivers, feel free to enlighten me. AMD tech support is, at least responding. Slowly.

Wish I would have seen the Right Reverend Wright spew, er, speech, but I was f***ing around with this thice cursed machine. Is audio/video/transcript available anywhere?

I don't know if the other Lizards would believe it, but that's only one part of the LA basin...the San Gabriel Valley.

If you stand on top of Mt. Wilson and look at all the lights of LA, it's about four times bigger then what you see in that picture.

The nice thing about the egg is that it's damn near airtight and holds heat well even in windy cold conditions. Since it's a pretty low oxygen fire it burns pretty clean and doesn't really use a lot of coals. I use the generic store bought bickettes and they work quite well.

Did this about 6 months ago.

1) Are you sure you installed the AMD driver? (Other drivers here.)

2) Are you sure the motherboard supports your new chip? That there's not a BIOS setting to tweak?

Al-Qaeda in Iraq: Determined but Losing

The latest three messages from al-Qaeda addressing the Sunni community uncover the depth of the crisis that al-Qaeda is facing in its former host community.
The threatening tone of the missives from the alleged Abu Omar Baghdadi and Aby Ayyub, and the insulting tone of the second by Zawahiri, reflect mistrust, anxiety and a dire need to retrieve what was lost.

GoV....
I received a phone call this afternoon from Roger Simon, the CEO of PJM,

announcing that our relationship was terminated, and that we should remove anything connected with PJM from our blog’s template. The specific reason given was our publication of Surrender, Genocide... or What?, the guest-essay by El Inglés that has caused so much argument for the last few days. Roger informed me with regret that the PJM Board had decided to cancel our contract.

This guy is really becoming an embarrassment to everyone who supports him. You'll also note in the spinoff links that William Ayers - Weatherman extraordinaire, STILL doesn't think that the Weathermen's use of violence during the Vietnam War was wrong.

GoV is talking facist genocide, and that just aint on. I dont care if we dont like them, killing someone is the poor mans excuse to a satisfactory outcome for both sides. I.E. ELIMINATION OF THE OTHER SIDE.

Ok the newspaper here says something interesting.
Bashar El Assad said that the facility bombed by Israel was not a nuclear weapons site.
And then he said: "Why would we want an atomic bomb? To bomb Israel? That would be killing a whole lot of Palestines. We can't do that."
Funny that Ahmalittlemahdi never realized that.
Bombing Israel is bombing a lot of muslims at the same time.

Betcha the NYC police are being briefed as to how to protect NYers from Sharpton's rioters. Riots, though, are hard to manage. This one has the potential to get out of control mainly because Sharpton wants a real riot, not a protest.

There's a scene in Saving Private Ryan where an SS man stabs a Jewish-American soldier in a hand to hand fight. As the knife goes in, the SS whispers to the man he is killing to hush. Don't make any trouble. Die like a good Jew. Mark Steyn understands that the real offense today isn't the destruction of Western liberties and standards. It's resistance that's unacceptable. The real offense is making trouble.

Hush now and go quietly.

Even as a retired RN, I have not seen this. With my 4 kids, ear infections galore, but no burst ear drum with bleeding.

(Disclaimer: I'm not a parent. This is only my observation.)

Our Scoutmaster's son had a punctured eardrum when he was in early elementary school. The bleeding was the clue they needed for the diagnosis. He came through it without any ill effects. His hearing is fine now, and he's 39 years old.

How are you today?

314 hermeneutics  Sun, Apr 27, 2008 11:15:29pm

re: #298 NY Nana

Nana,

A burst ear drum is bad. It is usually caused by an infection in the middle ear. His/her body is making so much pus or fluid inside the ear that the drum could no longer contain it -- thus, it bursts.

I have kids. The one time this happened to one of my boys he felt immediately better. Perhaps the pressure receded?

Tomorrow get antibiotics. Tonight, though, give him pain killers (aspirin) and tilt him so the bad ear is down. Do NOT give him a bath or shower tomorrow. No water in ear. Sponge him.

End of advice ... hope it helped.

It's happened to my son at least twice that I remember; once as an elementary aged student, and once just this past winter (He's 18).
His hearing is fine, the eardrum heals itself quite nicely. Just some antibiotics for him.

Once the eardrum is perforated, my son tells me that it doesn't hurt as badly as a "regular" ear infection, since the pressure is released. They don't recommend the eardrops for pain after it's perforated, but will give pain pills if needed.

Thanks. I will try to post that in the spinoffs...can't see straight!

They were all out for Obama, in quite a general agreement.
After Pennsylvania, a few of them are considering Hillary more than before.
McCain, practically doesn't exist.

Sounds just like our mainstream media! I'm not surprised.

For news from the US, the media here usually get the American information (AP et al.). That's why it's so similar.

Poor thing! It is hard when they're that little, they have no clue as to why the heck they're hurting so much. I'm sure that he'll be fine, and I'll keep him in my prayers. You're a good grandma to worry so much. ;)

I hope my son is done with them too, it's weird how fast his ear infections come on. He came home from work, said my ear hurts, I made him an appointment at the Doctor's, then he went to sleep. The next morning, he shows me his ear; which, quite frankly, looked pretty gnarly. Apparently it burst in the night, and he never even woke up. Literally from zero to perforated in about 8 hours! Ugh

He has been waking up during the night, which is not the usual..Ouch re your son...just let this be his last. And this little guy, who screams when he recognizes the building where the office is?

Just let both boys be OK. IIRC, this is far more common in boys, BTW. Again, I wish that you didn't have to learn about this theheard way!

Thank you again. I am off to sleep...I think!

Yep. Updated to the latest BIOS, as far as I know it's the latest AMD drivers although I have seen 2 different versions show up in device manager. I'll recheck that and thanks for the input.

Van Helsing, hope you're still here -

Does Task Manager - Performance show two processors? If not, your original Windows single-core installation may not be in "ACPI Multiprocessor PC" mode. Check the entry under Computer in Device Manager; if it doesn't say "ACPI Multiprocessor PC", boot from your XP cd and repair your install. Windows will re-detect hardware and configure the appropriate ACPI.

If you have questions on Windows repair, please post back and we'll go to email.

re: #252 ploome hineni

yes but

OH the inhumanity!

BENTONVILLE, Ark. - An inmate awaiting trial on a murder charge is suing the county, complaining he has lost more than 100 pounds because of the jailhouse menu.
Broderick Lloyd Laswell says he isn't happy that he's down to 308 pounds after eight months in the Benton County jail. He has filed a federal lawsuit complaining the jail doesn't provide inmates with enough food.

According to the suit, Laswell weighed 413 pounds when he was jailed in September. Police say he and a co-defendant fatally beat and stabbed a man, then set his home on fire.

"On several occasions I have started to do some exercising and my vision went blurry and I felt like I was going to pass out," Laswell wrote in his complaint. "About an hour after each meal my stomach starts to hurt and growl. I feel hungry again."

Such a poor baby...if it were up to me, I'd only give that sonofabitch bread and water. I guess you could say he is "The Biggest Loser", in more ways than one...
