-RetweetBarack Obama Speaks About Rev. Wright

Tue, Apr 29, 2008 at 10:57:29 am PDT

Barack Obama is giving a press conference right now, throwing Reverend Jeremiah Wright under the bus...

UPDATE at 4/29/08 11:27:09 am:

The bottom line: it’s simply unbelievable that he did not know about Wright’s views until yesterday.

To give just one example out of many: Wright traveled to Libya with Louis Farrakhan and met Muammar Gaddafi. Are we supposed to believe that Barack Obama never even heard of it?

shocked! of course he is, as he threw his grandma under the bus.

2 EC Marm  Tue, Apr 29, 2008 10:58:39am

Watch out for that bus, Reverend! Here it comes!

3 doppelganglander  Tue, Apr 29, 2008 10:59:00am

Isn't he going to hurt his back from all that under-bus-throwing?

Barak Obama hates old people! He throws them all under the bus!

He's an agist!

I hope he threw him under the FRONT of the bus.

Rev Wright is larger than life.

10 Consanescerion  Tue, Apr 29, 2008 11:00:55am

Rev. Wright of the church of "Hate Whitey" may not be a patriot, but he has done us all a service by unmasking Obama. I feel so grateful; I may send him a fruit basket.

11 x-ray  Tue, Apr 29, 2008 11:01:21am

Finally he's throwing somebody under the bus that belongs under the bus.

14 Russkilitlover  Tue, Apr 29, 2008 11:02:32am

BHO has access to a lot of buses. My question to him if I ever got the chance is a simple math question - how many buses does it take to throw all Americans under?

15 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)  Tue, Apr 29, 2008 11:03:14am

I wonder if Wright is gonna complain that a white woman got thrown under the bus before he did?

16 Charles  Tue, Apr 29, 2008 11:03:15am

Senator ... why the CHANGE?

33 cookielady  Tue, Apr 29, 2008 11:05:51am

What's with Reuters today? Are we commenting on something of theirs?

Maybe they want a comment on the Wright Reverend... Here ya go, folks:

Rev. Wright is a hate-monger and a racist, and the presidential candidate and tyro senator who has named him a spiritual mentor is tarred with the same brush, and has been for 20 years.

Every single word by Obama in this press conference is going though about a billion HEPA filters in his brain before it comes out his mouth. Bush almost looks articulate compared to this!

The Wright issue will NOW be forever closed.

I want to make certain that people understand who I am.

What he said yesterday contradicts what I have done in my life.

HOW?

I had noticed that he had actually DONE anything in his life other than bully his way into the Illinois legislature and con his way into a US Senate seat promising specifically not to run for POTUS this year if elected. He certainly hasn't wasted any energy on getting things done, building any bridges or even casting any votes to speak ofr.

It's not Wright's fault. He is what he is and it only takes 6 minutes to find out, (misc. pleasantries, various greetings, intro and then clunk!) ten minutes max to reconfirm that it wasn't a passing quirkiness or misunderstanding.
It's Obama's fault for not walking out of that so-called church 20 years ago, half way through the bile-filled "sermon" and well before Wright positioned himself at the exit to shake hands. He shouldn't have to disavow Wright today or yesterday or tomorrow, cause he never should have stuck around long enough to get aquainted with him in the first place.

Is Obama gonna now claim he only went cause the missus made him? It's Michelle's fault?

He joined that church to cement his "blackness" in the community to get elected as a Senator. He would have preferred to have canapes and chardonnay with the San Fran libs but a guys gotta do what a guys gotta do to get a vote.

I even think he could have a future in the presidency but he needs a bit more seasoning.

199 turn  Tue, Apr 29, 2008 11:22:22am

Much smarter people here have given this more thought than I have. But last night watching o'Reilly and H&C I started conspiracy thinking like a Kos Kid.

Twenty years ago Obama realized his passion to become the president of the US. He looks in the mirror and thinks hey I'm black and I ain't never going to make it unless I get support from blacks thinking the whites are still too dann (as in GD) racist to ever vote for a black.

He also realized he had no chance at being POTUS unless he get's Christian religion as opposed to the less popular Islam which he would actually prefer. So he shops around and finds a radical black preacher and congregation who share many of his racist beliefs to throw in with. Better yet he finds a Pastor with ties to people sympathetic to Islam.

Well the Pastor and his Islamic sympathizers who are using the Pastor as a huge tool see the potential in the young Obama and groom him for success against the great white oppressor. Obama finally sees a chance for president and goes for it and much to his surprise the whites on the left (read Kos Kids) overwhelming support him. At this point he is hoping like hell to retain the support of his congregation while at the same time praying the shit on Wright doesn't come out.

When the shit hits the fan he makes the calculated decision to distance himself from the Pastor with a grand bait and switch speach and the belief he no longer really needs the black vote to make it. Guess what? Homey don't play that game. Wright lashes back trying to destroy Obama's chances to help perpetuate the myth that racism is rampant in the US because he, along with Farrakhan, Al Sharpton, Jessee Jackson (oh by the way Juan Williams was great last night) don't want to loose the power of the people.

So now Obama takes his chance on the white vote and throws the Pastor UNDER THE BUS. How great, Obama's screwed either way and sunk in my opinion.

I think Carole King sang it best:

Stayed in bed all morning just to pass the time
There's something wrong here, there can be no denying
One of us is changing, or maybe we've stopped trying

And it's too late, baby, now it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Something inside has died and I can't hide
And I just can't fake it

It used to be so easy living here with you
You were light and breezy and I knew just what to do
Now you look so unhappy, and I feel like a fool

And it's too late, baby, now it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Something inside has died and I can't hide
And I just can't fake it

Heh, and the lyrics site now links to Google translation:

E che sia troppo tardi, baby, ora è troppo tardi
Se davvero ha fatto provare a renderlo

Will Obama and his campaign now consider the guilt-by-association with Wright issue closed? Or will he/they try to spin it until election day? I'm guessing the latter, as it keeps so much media attention off other issues.

Honestly, I see this whole Wright/Obama thing to be some form of Machiavellian scheme, and they're playing this whole game for the media... a calculated risk in order to bolster the Obama campaign. What proof do I have? None. Just a feeling, that's all.

Wright may be on his way under the bus, but there's a gulley beneath he can lay in to avoid being hit...

334 Duke6855  Tue, Apr 29, 2008 11:36:53am

It's pretty clear what went down... Obama needed a boost, so he asked Wright to step up the rhetoric for a few days in order to be justified in bringing it up again.

So brave!

I find Senator Obama to be sincere and I can see that he is wounded by this. Hving said that I don't think he is ready for prime time. Yet a bit naive. I think he has a future in promoting better race relations in this country and I think we would all be grateful for that. I even think he could have a future in the presidency but he needs a bit more seasoning.

It's all good. Obama come out with a few bumps and bruises. America gets a glimpse into a dimension of an African American mindset that we may have not been here-to-for aware. Indeed, if you believe the Senator even he was unaware.

Let's get it out there and deal with it.

Hmm. Obama's patrilinial line has been engaged in brutal ethnic cleansing of a rival tribal and political group in Kenya. Death toll in the hundreds, more injured, property destroyed, people fleeing for their lives. Luos versus Kikuyus.
Never seen anything of the sort in the USA. Seems we all know how to handle these things a bit better than some other countries do, after all.

What can Obama possibly add to any harmonious race relations ANYWHERE if he's gotten all his interpersonal human relations input over the last twenty years from a nasty old crank who quotes KKK doctrine meant to put people like him down - approvingly! while encouraging people to hate another particular group of people who've done him or others no bad whatsoever. He travels all over the place, and is moving into a swank mansion in a very exclusive and expensive neighborhood. He's well-fed, well-dressed, well-educated ... what the hell is he talking about? An alternate reality?
Obama adds nothing, worse, he'll set this country back.

From Obama's book, The Audacity of Hope:

From Wikipedia:

The title of The Audacity of Hope was derived from a sermon delivered by Obama's religious and spiritual mentor, Jeremiah Wright (see link to full sermon at bottom of page).[4] While a Senate candidate, Obama delivered the keynote address at the 2004 Democratic Convention, entitled The Audacity of Hope that propelled him to national prominence. In the less than 20 minutes it took to deliver the speech, Obama was catapulted to sudden fame, with many analysts predicting that he might be well-positioned to enter a future presidential race. In 2006, Obama released The Audacity of Hope, a book-length account that expanded upon many of the same themes he originally addressed in the convention speech.

My buddies and I live in the most conservative state in the nation. We don't as a rule demonstrate.

I believe the senator feels betrayed. The idea that he buys into Wright's ridiculous beliefs is not credible. The idea that this is some kind of political maneuver isn't either. At best it shows him to be human and at worst it shows him to be naive and a bad judge of character.

I may not be as cynical or politically competitive as some here. I can believe Obama is sincere and still not vote for him this November.

If Hilliary wants to win ( and I am not so sure I am in favor of that ) she has to have her surrogates go after Obama with out any reservation. They have to stress how STUPID he must be to have spent 20 years in that church and just have found out Wright was a racist yesterday. They have to pound, pound, and then pound some more. And we can all watch and smile from the sidelines.

Here's my read on this.

Yesterday Obama turned over his donor list to the DNC, something a nominee does once they've been selected, it's something unheard of before the selection of nominee is known.

Wright just gave him the push-off he needed from the far-left shore as he paddles furiously for the middle now.

LOUIS FARRAKHAN

On numerous occasions, Farrakhan has made alliances with avowed foreign enemies of the United States. In January 1996, for instance, he formed a partnership with Libyan dictator Muammar Qadhafi, who pledged $1 billion to help Farrakhan develop a Muslim political lobby in the U.S. According to Libya’s official news agency Jana, Qadhafi announced: “We agreed with Louis Farrakhan and his delegation to mobilize in a legal and legitimate form the oppressed minorities -- and at their forefront the blacks, Arab Muslims and Red Indians -- for they play an important role in American political life and have a weight in U.S. elections.” The Jana story further stated that Qadhafi and Farrakhan had pledged to fight America from the "inside."

According to another source, our State Department "disallowed" that funding by Qadhafi.

Compare and contrast Barack "my white grandma is a racist" Obama with John McCain. I'm not a big fan of McCain's position on torture. Seriously there are only three possibilities here:

a. Obama sat in Wright's church for 20 years, called the man his "spiritual mentor" in his book, but wasn't ever exposed to Wright's racism or toxic views and was legitimately ignorant of them.

b. Obama knew about Wright's racist views and agreed with them, or

c. Obama knew about Wright racist views, *disagreed* with them, but wanted to stay in the church anyway to garner support from the radicalized Black community. (EG "street cred").

"A" is so preposterous it makes the head spin. (I actually find it more insulting to the intelligence than "I did not have sex with that woman"). But even assuming its true, would you want someone THAT blind and clueless to serve as POTUS?

"B" means Obama is a racist himself, no better than Wright. Is THIS the person you want to be POTUS?

"C" means Obama is a finger-in-the-air which-way-is-the-wind blowing today politician the same as the rest of them. Maybe its not as bad as the other two possibilities, but it surely takes away all the pretense of Obama being a "post-racial" candidate who is going to heal America's racial divide.

Now the burden is on Obama to prove which category he falls into, and *IF* he wants to push himself into category "C", he's going to have to EXPLICITLY denounce every particular crackpot theory of Wright's.

But of course Obama has picked choice "A" as his explanation, meaning that if we are to take him at his word on this, he is utterly unqualified be President. If you can't "read" your own "mentor" and friend of 20 years, then what business do you have meeting with foreign leaders and creating American policy?

Welcome to the way politics is performed in Illinois.

Welcome to the way politics is performed just about EVERYWHERE.

In case you didn't notice, I was playing coy with my "cynical" remark. OF COURSE OBAMA IS DOING THIS BECAUSE HE'S IN A POLITICAL PICKLE. That's so transparently obvious even Chicago's dead voters can see it.

The question is why he thinks the rest of us are so stupid that we are NOT going to see it (and the answer is that its because some people actually ARE that stupid. . .fortunately not most of them).

re: #435 ljmw

I believe the senator feels betrayed. The idea that he buys into Wright's ridiculous beliefs is not credible. The idea that this is some kind of political maneuver isn't either. At best it shows him to be human and at worst it shows him to be naive and a bad judge of character.

I may not be as cynical or politically competitive as some here. I can believe Obama is sincere and still not vote for him this November

But what's the betrayal? Wright was supposed to keep his big trap shut until after the inauguration? What other betrayal can there possibly be?
Obama's a LAWYER by education, out of Harvard no less, the most prestigious university in the nation. Forensics and law go hand in hand. It's not credible Obama couldn't understand the moral, civic, religious, or legal implications of Wright's rhetoric for twenty years, much less be married by such a man or have his children baptised by him, without buying into them. 100% isn't necessary. 10% is bad enough with the likes of Wright. Who in their right mind is going to solemnize two of the most personal and meaningful moments of his life - marriage and baptisms of his cherished little children by a guy who he isn't comfortable with?

Wright ain't gonna change - he's adores the attention, he's pure ham when that camera is on him. He LOVES this. Obama probably did make a wrong call or maybe it never crossed his mind - that he wouldn't have to deal with the political implications and arrogantly believed he could manage it. He's been too long in a bubble, with all syncophants.

Obama is a victim of his own post-modernism, i.e. his utter inability to discern evil when it walks Wright up to him and slaps him in the face. He has treated religion as an adornment for his career, sorta like the Clintons use marriage to make themselves acceptable to the great unwashed masses. Obama thought that BLT was mainstream and not the twisted cult it is. The Obamatons will accept this and pretend the issue is closed. But Wright, like the Terminator, will be back!

Surely you know his electoral history. Can't recall his primary opponents, but challenged all of their petition signatures in court -- and I believe all were thrown off the ballot.

He got the court to open private divorce papers on Jack Ryan to discredit him in the general election. The Republican party could only bring in Alan Keyes -- and out-of-state candidate tapped at the last minute.

In other words, he ran essentially uncontested.

As for his Senate voting record, it's the furthest to the left of anyone in the entire Senate.

Obama is an elitist toy. Too bad he spent his first years as my senator running for POTUS. Had he hunkered down and done the job he was elected to do for a term or two, he might have come into his own.

I don't think Obama actually imagined at the inception of his campaign that his Presidential bid would be as successful as it has been. (Nor likely would it have been, if there were any decent Dem candidate with less baggage than Clinton).

Somewhere along the way Obama's ego took over, and the WORST thing that can happen at that point is to be surrounded by snivelling yes-men (and women) who worship you and kiss your ass.

IMO, Obama is simply not being honest here.

Of course not. But presumeably you can pick which church you attend. Would you attend one where you strongly and regularly disagreed with the pastor on issues he felt were of major importance? Assuming that were true, would you describe that individual as your "spiritual mentor"?

If you were a US Senator, would you feel professionally obligated to take up your pastor's crackpot anti-American beliefs publically if you disagreed?

Would you want your President to be the sort of person who has the moral courage to do this?

Long time reader - first time poster.

The thing that's most frightening about all this BS is the lack of outcry from the black community - particularly black ministers. I can remember seeing only one such statement disavowing the good reverend.

Kind of reminds me of the deafening silence from the so-called moderate Muslim community. I'm sure there is one, just as I'm sure that the vast majority of "black" churches in this country would disagree with most of what this man says.

A little alarming is all. Just more proof that the racial divide and class envy are indeed cornerstones of the Democrat party.

THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM -
Wright and Obama planned this out to completely take it off the table for the general election.

Nobody wants to say the truth regarding Wright and Obama -
a) They're very good friends
b) They're longtime friends
c) Obama knows and knew exactly how Wright feels and speaks about things.
d) Obama may or may not agree with much of what he says... BUT... he won't disavow him bcs of the above and bcs he would be considered a sell out to the black community
THE SOLUTION

GOOD COP - BAD COP -

Wright gets more and more outrageous and outspoken Obama more strongly dissaciates himself from Wright... and looks much better then if Wright had kept quiet and Obama ignored the situation.

Now he has a shot of getting white middle class blue collar voters in Florida, PA and maybe even Ohio.
Now he can then bash McCain for his very loose in comparison endorsement from Hagee...
Now the Wright issue is taken off the table...

McCain may not realize how crafty and sly his opponent is and how much he will attack McCain while McCain criticizes his own RNC for adds about Wright, which are totally legit adds.

Mike

You know Barack is in trouble when even the AP has trouble swallowing his explaination of his relationship with his former pastor.

From the article currently on the Yahoo front page.

"If Senator Obama did not say what he said, he would never get elected," Wright said. "Politicians say what they say and do what they do based on electability, based on sound bites, based on polls."

Obama stated flatly that he doesn't share the views of the man who officiated at his wedding, baptized his two daughters and been his pastor for 20 years. The title of Obama's second book, "The Audacity of Hope," came from a Wright sermon.

"What became clear to me is that he was presenting a world view that contradicts who I am and what I stand for," Obama said. "And what I think particularly angered me was his suggestion somehow that my previous denunciation of his remarks were somehow political posturing. Anybody who knows me and anybody who knows what I'm about knows that I am about trying to bridge gaps and I see the commonality in all people."

Barack is doomed.

As lizards we remain skeptical about Obama's "disillusionment" with Preacher Wright, but I can't suppress the suspicion that this speech is going to allay some of the doubts of the uncommitted. Hopefully, however, they will continue to examine his campaign and so find his domestic proposals far too socialistic and his foreign policy far too cowardly for America. We shall see.
