Well, to be fair to Paula, the way they were running the show last night was confusing at best. They started off saying they were going to hold off judging until contestants had sung both of their two songs, then brought everybody out, before they had all finished two. Stupid idea.

I think they tried this to keep from running over their timeslot, because Ryan Seacrest talks too much, and can't keep the show from running over.

" The Democratic dogfight for the presidential nomination is a gift that keeps on giving. Without it, we would never witness the liberal mainstream media divided between the Obama and Clinton camps. Thus we see -- with the rest of the nation for a change -- things out in the open which would have been buried had it been otherwise. And so on Tuesday morning, all three cable news networks showed the Rev. Jeremiah Wright's National Press Club speech on "the black religious experience," live and in its glorious entirety. Appeals court dismisses NY suit vs. gun industry

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the city's claims against the manufacturers and wholesale sellers of firearms, saying a federal law granted them immunity.

The lawsuit, originally filed in 2000 under former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, sought no monetary damages but claimed suppliers marketed guns to legitimate buyers knowing they would then be used illegally.

He never would have gotten my vote for this very reason. I did respect him greatly for his dedication post 9/11 though.

That's one way; however, in this era, when "money" is imaginary, loosening the cost of credit...well.

It could be inflationary. I think it is, but see my earlier caveats.

Friedman's definition is easier to follow.

Friedman was the leading proponent of the monetarist school of economic thought. He maintained that there is a close and stable link between inflation and the money supply, mainly that the phenomenon of inflation is to be regulated by controlling the amount of money poured into the national economy by the Federal Reserve Bank. Friedman's arguments were designed to counter popular claims that inflation at the time was the result of increases in the oil price, or increases in wages: as he wrote,

Inflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon.

Tonight is Walpurgis Night

In one of my many trips to France, I was out in Eastern France during the summer soltice, which, in some of the older villages and hamlets, is celebrated in a similar fashion as Walpurgis. Even some running around the woods "nekked ."

The big summer time country wide musical festival is held at the same time.

A whole lot of fun, I may say.

This article from 2004 has been posted at LGF before (although I couldn't find where it was) but I wanted to do it again, with some bold added to words from Obama that contradict any assertions that he didn't hear what Wright was saying:

On a Sunday morning two weeks before he launches his presidential campaign, Obama is at Trinity United Church of Christ on the South Side, gently swaying from side to side under a giant iron cross. [...]

On this particular Sunday, the sea of black worshippers is dotted with a few white folks up in the balcony, clutching copies of The Audacity of Hope they've brought for Obama's book-signing later. Obama, sitting in the third row with his wife and two daughters, Malia and Natasha, stands, claps, prays, and sways along with the rest of the congregation. During the sermon, he watches the preacher carefully and writes notes. When asked by Wright to say a few words, Obama grabs the microphone and stands. "I love you all," he says. "It's good to be back home." The 150-person choir breaks into a chorus of "Barack, Hallelujah! Barack, Hallelujah!"

One reason you see inflation is dollars chasing too few or scarce goods in growing economies. This is supported by expanding economies in India and China gobbling up raw materials in the global exchange.

Artificially depressed interest rates (thanks Fed) lower yields on safe investments such as Treasurys which, in a downturn, are considered a safe haven from the volatility of equities. Seeking higher return, investors then turn to commodities (metals, OIL, gold, wheat) as both "flight to safety" and to chase risky return. Lots of people diving into commodities drive up the price.

Combined, these two phenomenon contribute to the increasing prices that you see at the pump, in gold and at the grocery store.

An Irishman goes to confession in St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
'Father, it has been one month since my last confession. I had relations with Nookie Green twice last month.'
The priest tells the sinner, 'You are forgiven. Go out and say three Hail Mary's.'
Soon after, another Irishman enters the confessional. 'Father, it has been two months since my last confession. I've had relations with Nookie Green twice a week for the last two months.'
This time the priest questions, 'Who is Nookie Green?'
'A new woman in the neighborhood,' the sinner replies.
'Very well,' sighs the priest. 'Go and say ten Hail Mary's.'
At Mass the next morning, as the priest prepares to deliver his sermon, A tall, voluptuous, drop dead gorgeous redhead woman enters the sanctuary. The eyes of every man in the church fall upon her as she slowly sashays up the aisle and sits down right in front of the priest.
Her dress is green and very short , with matching shiny emerald green shoes. The priest and altar boy gasp, as the woman in the matching green shoes and dress sits with her legs slightly spread apart.
The priest turns to the altar boy and whispers, 'Is that Nookie Green?'
The bug-eyed altar boy can't believe his ears but replies, 'No, I think it's just the reflection off her shoes..............................'

Shoe fit humor. When trying on sneakers or other shoes with laces, the two sides with the holes should be roughly parallel if the fit is right. If the shoe is too wide for the foot, the lines sometimes go in towards where the bow is tied, so that the lines form an "A". If the shoe is too narrow for a wide foot, the laces may form a "V".

Whites saw black as being deficient. From some Okies.

(and it is more than "Wash yer hands pardner"

Though, I don't know how it could fight cancer, since cancer is your own body's cells randomly mutating. Which, to this layman anyway, makes me think that each batch of cancer is going to be different on the cellular level, making the idea of mass produced antibodies kind of useless.

I forget who all was discussing it, but it came up that Gandalf didn't actually do much.... magic... for a wizard.

That was us. I recall pointing out that most of the time, in the battles, he's engaged in swordplay. Someone should have tapped him on the shoulder and said, "ya know, Gandalf, we've got plenty of guys out here who are qualified on the M1 Basic Infantry Sword. Can you think of anything else you could be doing for the war effort? Oh, I dunno, like... wizard... magic... helloooo?"

And speaking of swords; warming to my theme from my previous post, you notice that all of the Orc swords look like poorly-fashioned pruning hooks made from old Buick fenders. Who was the principal military contractor for Mordor? There should be an investigation.

“[T]his second film is not a ‘tag on,' it’s not ‘filler,’ it’s an integral part of telling the story of those 50 years of history lost in the narrative,” del Toro told The One Ring. “There will be certain things that we will see from the first movie but from a different point of view, but it will feel like a volume, in the five volumes of the entire story. It will not feel like a bridge, I’ve been hearing it called ‘a bridge film,’ it’s not, it’s an integral chapter of the story, and I think we’re all on the same page.”

re: #274 mama winger

For you, Mama, and for all you dog owners, in case you don't know this yet - its the Legend of the Rainbow Bridge.

Briefly, it says that all our pets go to the foot of the rainbow bridge, where there is a huge meadow. they are young and healthy, all play and enjoy each other's company, there is always enough food and drink, there are no fight. There is no more pain, there is only joy.

Once in a while, one ot the other of the pets pricks up their ears, and bounces with joy and runs to greet their owner who is come after their own death.
The jubilant, joyful greeting is even better than when they greeted us here at home.

Together, pet and owner then walk over the rainbow bridge in to Paradise.

{Mama}

What a lovely idea!

I started this when my beloved Big Dog became so ill - and then it was so quickly over! I kept it up for nearly a month - just all the pain, the memories, day by day, especially the first week. Couldn't go and cry, I've still got Miss Dog, and she hates it when I'm upset.
It helps to write it, like a diary, just letting it flow out, tears and all.
Nobody needs to read it, after all!

Yup, a few cultures have one. Now only ONE is famous, and not for good reasons.

So much so that some try to get rid of the ones from other cultures.

Post and run :

Form 4/8 at Powerline:

Rev. Jeremiah Wright is not the only religious figure from whom Barack Obama draws inspiration. Obama also has ties with Rev. Michael Pfleger, the Catholic pastor at St. Sabina on the south side of Chicago. The connection, reported in April 2004 by the Chicago Tribune, is discussed here and here.

As these reports show, Rev. Pfleger, like Rev. Wright, is a hard core supporter of Louis Farrakhan. Just how hard core became apparent two years ago. At that time the Illinois Hate commission was found to have an acolyte of Farrakhan on board, Sister Claudette Marie Muahmmed. When the Sister refused to denounce Farrakhan's racist and anti-Semitic remarks, three Jewish members resigned from the Commission. Pfleger not only supported the Sister's refusal to condemn Farrakhan's racism, he also said of the resigning Jewish members: "good riddance".

Was brilliant fun, especially when one wakes up in the morning and stands in soggy moss, water going over the ankles ...
Or when there's this pitiful squeal in the night 'help, help' - and instead of a tent (in the howling gale and rain, natch!) you find a soggy, wwriggling mess, under and in which are the kids.

Yeah - campfires and camp cooking, got the burnt fingers, got the medals, me!
Great fun, though - highly recommended!

Disabuse him of that notion!
She'll end up in a stream or something - here, even truckdrivers get totally lost, and as our roads can be very narrow, they get stuck - sometimes for day as its so difficult to get them out.

Agreed! Home-made boat races in the creek, the boys trying to stream-fish with a deep-sea lure twice as big as anything they might possibly catch, cougar prints around the campsite the next morning; you can't buy that much fun.

Disabuse him of that notion!
She'll end up in a stream or something - here, even truckdrivers get totally lost, and as our roads can be very narrow, they get stuck - sometimes for day as its so difficult to get them out.
Yep, and some end up in streams!
I mean - what is wrong with looking out the windows and checking that the GPS can't possibly be right?

That's just it. I do the driving. heh.

She gets lost easily.... that's his worry.

He's a big worrier, though. He'll get out of bed in the middle of the night to recheck the doors.

Big worrier.

re: #358 UFO TOFU

Exactly - and then, when they're grown up, as my lot is, then there are the memories, and one can tell the amazed grandchildren what their parents were up to at their age!

Cougarprints we dind't have in Ireland - but there were some cows who made the most amazing sounds in the night, like foghorns - and then they came round the tents ...
Naw - our worst enemy were the midges. Aarrrrgggghhh!

Its always good to have one worrier in the family though, relieves one of the burden of worrying oneself!

mama winger's been doing pretty good by her father-in-law..... :)

364 LanceKates  Wed, Apr 30, 2008 2:12:10pm

students suspended after unusual prom invite.

Ok... Ok.... mooning someine is in bad taste, even if you get a lacrosse team to moon a girl to ask her to go to prom with you....

I can MAYBE understand the suspension.... it was during a soccer game... poor taste, yadda yadda yadda....

but 20 hours of community service? It isn't like they beat the snot out of someone then posted the video on youtube...

She'd have to go back to MN to do that. That's where her side of the family is.

Yeah... how long can a guy do that? I'm 28, I see alot of folks around me who have a wife, kids, house, etc.

370 LanceKates  Wed, Apr 30, 2008 2:24:34pm

I don't mind helping, it is what I do and I get a place to stay in exchange, so I can afford college.

Just gives the feeling that one's life is on hold.

Author of "Prison to Praise"....and many subsequent follow-up little volumes that document the results of that first little book....

Next time you are at a book shop, see if you can order the first two or three of his..... :)

My best recommendation.

I'll see what I can find. Maybe I'll hit paydirt at the library.

375 LanceKates  Wed, Apr 30, 2008 2:38:54pm

Don't like going to the library though. My taxdollars fund it, but I'm not allowed to carry there.

of the people for the people, eh?
