It always amazes me to see so many excellent guitarists with bad right hand technique. He's going to give himself carpel tunnel keeping his pinky on the soundboard like that. He's also inhibiting the vibration of the soundboard.
It's an excellent performance.

Considering he's probably gotten away with playing that way for 30+ years, my guess is he'll be OK.

I though it was a pretty sweet performance.

Have you ever seen one of our military walking past you and wanted to convey to them your thanks, but weren't sure how or it felt awkward?

Recently, a gentleman from Seattle created a gesture which could be used and has started a massive movement to get the word out.

Please everybody take just a moment to watch.

Sometimes a note should be plucked by the left hand. Also rarely, the right thumb can stop a harmonic which is plucked at the same time by the right 3rd finger. This is borrowed from harp technique.

Wow, I didn't realize they couldn't wear their uniforms off base. That is truly a shame. Unfortunately, it wouldn't surprise me if that started happening here. When our daughter was a police officer she couldn't have her uniform on unless she was on duty, not even on the drive to work.

re: #65 Killgore Trout

I could listen to flamencos all day. Gypsies, too, except when they play Django note-for-note. One guy I really love these days is Gabriel Kirschenbaum, who plays on the two Sera Una Noche recordings for Todd Garfinkle's MA Recordings label. I haven't been able to find anything else of his, but his playing on those records is overwhelmingly good: so varied, so creative, so daring, so moving, that technique just disappears.

This version has an easier to hear 1,3,4,5. Please don't get the impression that I like this kind of music or singer. :)

No, still not hearing it, Spanish or English. And I used to call cadence a lot. I'm just not getting the 1,3,4,5 thing.

121 ggt  Wed, Apr 30, 2008 7:40:46pm

I remember my Dear Ole' Dad talking about how he was introduced to the wonder of the Performing Arts while stationed in Baltimore. When he had leave, he and his buddies would go to NYC. Servicemen were allowed in FREE for standing-room only or if they had extra seats.

Such policies made it possible for a back-woods KY boy to begin a life-long love affair with Opera, Symphony and Ballet. He and my Mother still get excited when they hear certain music --it also helped him court his wife-to-be.

After he had his stroke, we put a boom-box with Vivaldi and some other CD's in his hospital room. EVERYONE walking by commented on how wonderful the music was. Even the nurses (who had never heard such music) took time to change out the CD's.

I wonder what the MET's policy towards servicemen is today.

re: #113 Pvt Bin Jammin

When I make it to Florida, I'm going to be sure to thank any servicemen.women I see. Not least for taking up the slack across both theatres we should have been covering >:

I used to consider joining our Royal Marine Commandos - Reserves, once I was out of uni. I'm now considering waiting till I emigrate to the US, as I eventually plan to do, and joining the US Marine Reserves instead. I'd like to actually make a difference if I take such a step, y'know?

I guess we'll see, quite a few factors to consider.

Some of our military have been harassed as well. It's disgusting.

If I make it to London remind me not to bother with Harrods.

And hasn't the Marine Corps made it illegal to stop off-base in uniform (their field/utility uniform...what do they call them now? DCU's...?)

124 bosforus  Wed, Apr 30, 2008 7:41:44pm

Well, I believe the piano at the beginning is E (1), G# (3), A (4), B (5). Might not be the right but I'm pretty sure it's the right progression. The Tommy Emmanuel song has the same progression.

re: #37 rawmuse

Writing Pizz, is too precious or detailed with orchestration articulation. Sometimes composers like showing off by being detailed and obvious in their articulations or bowings. A perfect example would be writing cuivre' (french) or Brassy in English, for a trombone. This seems obvious: a trombone is a brass instrument so why overstate it? I suppose overstating it ensures that the trombone player sounds jazz-big-band and classical. Same with pizz on a guitar. The guitar can be plucked, strummed, legato or connected between notes and using sing pizz ensures that the notes will be separated, non legato, but will ring more than with a staccato marking. I am not sure about this but I think pizz has more body than a staccato marking. Its just your composer’s deliberate attempt to get the exact sound he/she wants -- a controlling device.

the very first time i ever knew of her was a yr ago (?) i think it was barbara walters interviewing the obamas. i read that michelle had been compared to jackie o. well, my mom loved jackie o, so i was intrigued by seeing michelle. it was just stunning to see, however, that she was nothing but a crude nasty non jackie o. person.
michelle's answer to a friendly question , ie. "how are you going to handle the stress of the campaign" was, "well, barrack could get shot walking down the street".
she was so hostile and bizarre.

Mama told me when I was young
Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely to what I say.
And if you do this
It will help you some sunny day.
Take your time... dont live too fast,
Troubles will come and they will pass.
Go find a woman and youll find love,
And dont forget son,
There is someone up above.

(chorus)
And be a simple kind of man.
Be something you love and understand.
Be a simple kind of man.
Wont you do this for me son,
If you can?

Forget your lust for the rich mans gold
All that you need is in your soul,
And you can do this if you try.
All that I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.

(chorus)

Boy, dont you worry... youll find yourself.
Follow you heart and nothing else.
And you can do this if you try.
All I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.

Apologizing to the crowd, she proceeded to chew her fingernails off of her left hand. "Sorry, but I can't play the guitar with these nails", she explained. After the nails were gone, she did the remainder of the show and it knocked my friend's socks off!

Next decade 'may see no warming'

It may partly explain why temperatures rose in the early years of the last century before beginning to cool in the 1940s.

There's more spin in that article than on a merry-go-round.

An interesting, and hitherto unknown, fetish.

However, the Quantum Rule of Fetishes now dictates there must be a website devoted to it. Also, Rule #34 of the Internet.

But you perhaps are not aware of the foundational rule of "chick crushes".

See, girls often crush on each other. There's nothing sexual about it, really. Sometimes it's sexual, but most times, it's not.

Just a gal diggin' another gal. And with us, it's often emotional. Not like with guys, where it's only functional.

re: #125 hermeneutics

I am not sure about this but I think pizz has more body than a staccato marking. Its just your composer’s deliberate attempt to get the exact sound he/she wants -- a controlling device.

There are two usual techniques one could employ with a classical guitar to sound a note: a "rest" stroke ("apoyando" in Classical guitar terminology), where the plucking finger comes to rest on the next lower string,;and a "free stroke" ("tirando") where it does not.

The former has a sharper attack and is akin to the pizzicato used on bass, for example. So I could see specifying it for certain passages.

Holy Cow! I just had an uppity-piphany!

Michelle Obama is the church-goer! This is why her speeches sound like Wright's, but Senator Obama's do not.

I'll bet that Barack Obama, who seems like a nice enough guy, truly had little idea (not "no idea", but very little idea) how flipped out that pastor is. This is just coming together for me, but it's clicking.

"I could no more distance myself from Pastor Wright than I could from my white Grandmother." Yeah, well, they're both firmly wedged under the bus now, I'll tell you where this campaign is going next--Will he put Mrs. Obama in the box? She's truly Hillary to his Bill.

There's a reason he has gone from obscure (but popular) Illinois state Senator to strong candidate for the Presidency in about two years--Placekicker Michelle Obama is on the verge of getting a Field Goal.

You must have seen Jimi before he gained confidence on stage. People think that the inspiration for Jimi's dreamy sounds came from drugs when in reality it came from his days doing jumps as a paratrooper.

I'm coming out of the closet folks. I've struggled with a certain predisposition, which some would consider unnatural, for a number of years now. re: #316 Mich-again Well Buddy was one of my early "heros" - son of a gun left an audio tape with the record company, A&R guy saw it, heard it, thought it was from someone the record company had signed and put it out to radio stations all over the country. Buddy and the Crickets were driving back to Texas and heard it on the Radio ("Maybe Baby"? I forget!) turned around and went to the record company. Course they had the record company by the shorts for releasing their music without their consent. Pres of Record company offers 'em a ton of money (for a bunch of 18, 19 year old boys) and Buddy said "we'll see - let's go to the studio" whereupon they did - and just like everyone else, a studio engineer started screwing with the music and Buddy stomped into said President's office and said, keep the money for that one, but WE get total control of our music -we write it, and play it the way we want and that's how you release it" = President of record company said "Hell, even Frank Sinatra doesn't have that much power but Buddy stuck to his guns and got what he wanted. He was the FIRST musical artist to have complete artistic control of his music - that meant more to Buddy than the money!
And I think it was Bob Willis and the Texas Playboys

re: #314 rawmuse

Starting to make sense, now. Many thanks, amigo!

You're welcome.

The flamencos would call the above-mentioned"apoyando" technique "picado".

These things are bread and butter to classical or flamenco guitarists (of which I am effectively neither, but would like to be!).

The flamenco technique canon is also full of idiosyncratic techniques that aren't used in any other guitar style, like the famous rasgeados (including a continuous "drumroll" like one), complex tremolos, and percussive golpe tapping on the face of the guitar *while* simultaneously playing single notes or chords.

The rasgeado technique can involve each of the four fingers extending and hitting up to 4 or 5 separate strings, multiple times per second. Do the math, and these guys can literally articulate 50+ separate notes per second! Not 50 DIFFERENT notes (its all the notes of one chord many times each), but its still pretty impressive.

The flamenco technique is elaborate, but it isn't "gratuitous"; it really is integral to the flamenco sound and style. You can't play the music without the technique, and you can't "fake" it either.

In general, I think guitar players have a tendency to concentrate on technique (regardless of genre).

But like anything else, you learn the technique, practice it until it becomes second nature, and then (if you are mature), you stop worrying about it and go on and use it to make music.

[Link: www.vanityfair.com...]

Here's some of its fun prose:
" ... it seemed like a clash of entitlements, the messianics versus the menopausals."

"Tom Watson, the author of a forthcoming book about political-social-charitable online networking called CauseWired, summarized the discord with a post titled “The Left Splits: Writers Flee DailyKos over Clinton-Bashing,” decrying the flaming shish kebabs being chucked across the banquet room. “This is not the Democratic Party many of us have worked for; this is not the progressive blogosphere we’ve supported. Without blaming the worthy candidacy of Senator Obama in any way, this is not a progressive movement—it’s a harsh, echo-filled politburo bathed in faux post-racial hosannas and the gauzy camera lens of ‘hope.’%u200A”

Wood - leave filled, put in a shock dose of chlorine and cover.
Concrete in ground - same
Portable or acrylic spa - drain but dose with chlorine the last amounts of water left in bottom & pipes, add a little bit of water & drain again, close drain and cover.

If use use Bromine, shock with that instead but check it about once a month & repeat if necessary.

re: #333 haakondahl

We need to pursue these thoughts further. Here's what I said two days ago. And then the next day, this.

Just sayin' x2

Hey, you're dripping with condensation/condescension.

Hey, I'm dripping with truth here. I'm wanting to study and get a degree as I care for my mom who has dementia.

No condescension there. Just truth. And hope.

This is going to sound odd and maybe a little whiny but here goes.

First I want to start with thanks for this music thread it has kept my mind off my problems.

Now comes the odd part I just turned in the papers for my upcoming divorce and I'm not sure how I'll deal with the next couple of weeks. So I will apologize to all for the crap I might say in anger/bitterness. I've pissed off some people and stepped on some toes in the recent past venting (even with my sporadic posting here) and it is likely to not get better in the short run. This is likely the time of day I'll lose it, so as a warning but not an excuse to all my pain is likely the reason and please put a boot up my ass cause I'll need it.

Iron Fist is knocking and I should go soon.

re: #450 LeePro

LeePro, Good text.

Is it true that Michelle O attended Trinity since childhood and continued attending it as an adult? Wow.

As you said, most people pick churches on the basis of ideology/theology or some intuitive sense of "likemindedness." Including the Obamas. Since Obama moved into his wife's neighborhood, it makes sense that she'd have the contacts and established habits.

I'm not sure it follows that she wears the "church pants." Could be, though. I don't think Obama would go to that church if it didn't help his career. He strikes me as a climber and schemer, too clever to get sucked into the vortex of racism ... unless it either helped his career or he really believed it. My hunch is he believes Wright's invectives. Deeply. The reason why he couldn't ditch Wright is because it meant abandoning a way of thinking that had grown quite comfortable and had netted him political advantage.

Of course, he could be doing it just for her. Maybe.

And maybe Criminal Justice, since I have an umph for that too.

But I love history. Dates just give me a tingle.

Airstrike kills al-Qaida chief in Somalia

An American airstrike killed the purported leader of al-Qaida in Somalia on Thursday, according to a militant group.

"It is true that infidel planes bombed Dusamareb. Two of our important people, including Aden Hashi Eyrow, were killed in the incident," Mukhtar Robow Adumansur, a senior commander of the Islamists, told Reuters.

On this day in History, May 1st 1945

German General Krebs visits Russian General Zhukov to attempt to negotiate the surrender of Berlin. He is informed that surrender must be unconditional.

Hamburg Radio announces that Hitler is dead. Admiral Dönitz is announced as the second Fuhrer of the Reich. He then makes a radio address which seems to listeners as very weak. He then orders the German troops to fight to the end while Himmler, who has no authority, is attempting to negotiate favourable surrender terms with the Allies. British troops advance on Lubeck and Hamburg, and US forces are dug in on the west bank of the Elbe.

The Fuhrerbunker, in Berlin, empties as Martin Borman leaves with others. Josef Goebbels and his wife die after killing their six children. First the children had to be poisoned, all six of them: Helga, 12; Hilda, 11; Helmut, nine; Holde, seven; Hedda, five; and Heide, three. Having given them lethal injections. Josef Goebbels and his wife Magda left the bunker and asked an SS orderly to shoot them in the back of the head.

When I was a child, there were few seals on the CA coast. Now hundreds of them gather in some coves.

I don't know if you grew up in CA or luckily live there as an adult, but it really is a change and a positive one at that.

I reckon I should get to kicking my own butt then.

For what it's worth, I'm glad you beat the odds with Ovarian cancer. My aunt did it too. It ain't unbeatable, it seems, no matter what the doctors say.

Time for me to look into what it will take for someone like me to begin studies!

That is precisely correct, and Hitler was quoted later as saying as much. Hitler had no children that we know of. He had syphilis, and was reported to have only one testicle. He was a sick man in more than one way.
