Diesels will run on almost any flammable oil. You just have to filter out the food particles. There is a bit more, actually, due to the fact that engines are designed for specific fuel, but that's the gist of it.

Cooking oil can be processed into something like diesel fuel. Hence "bio-diesel."

An episode of "Dirty Jobs" had Mike Rowe follow around an old hippy who recylces grease into bio-diesel for his car. It winds up only costing a few pennies per gallon. Sounds great, until you realize that the guy spends all day driving around looking for old cooking oil, then all night refining it into diesel.
