French Nazi Hits the Skids

Fri, May 2, 2008 at 10:10:25 am PDT

French fascist leader Jean-Marie Le Pen has fallen on hard times, and it couldn’t happen to a nicer crypto-Nazi: France’s Le Pen selling bullet-proof car on eBay.

PARIS (Reuters) - French far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen is looking to make a bit of extra cash by putting his old bullet-proof car up for sale on eBay.

Le Pen, who stunned France in the 2002 presidential election when he finished second, put his party headquarters up for sale earlier this year after humiliating defeats in presidential and legislative elections last year left his group deep in the red.

Another drain on Le Pen’s finances was the 10,000 euro (7,922 pound) fine he incurred in February when a court found him guilty of “contesting crimes against humanity” for saying the Nazi occupation of France was “not particularly inhumane”.

Asked why the car was up for sale, a National Front spokesman said: “Money, money, glorious money.”

Le Pen is a douche, but do you think it is right to fine somebody for speech that isn't personally libelous (“contesting crimes against humanity”)? France is weird.

Here it is. It's a 1991 Peugeot 605, with 137,058km.

Oops, it's a '92. Was looking at the build year, not the model year. The mileage works out to about 85,000 miles.

I'm not happy about such laws. Even though I am happy to let any specific Holocaust denier to rot in jail.

But the "hate speech" laws are one of the main obstacles to a meaningful defense against Islam, and the hostile Other in general.

26 looking closely  Fri, May 2, 2008 10:20:52am

I'm no big fan of LePen, (and I have no opinion on how "humane" the French Nazi occupation was) but this kind of thing is outrageous:

Another drain on Le Pen’s finances was the 10,000 euro (7,922 pound) fine he incurred in February when a court found him guilty of “contesting crimes against humanity” for saying the Nazi occupation of France was “not particularly inhumane”

.

The Euros would be better off letting this speech happen, and get countered with more speech, rather than this censorship.

Are they talking about the car -- or Le Pen?

What is Peugeot reliability like now, anyway? I've heard the old ones called "Pig-outs". Peugeot is a solid competitor in the World Rally Championship (WRC), and they're working to try to dethrone Audi's R10 TDI in endurance racing, with their turbo-diesel 908HDi P1 car.

37 Psaturn  Fri, May 2, 2008 10:29:21am

re: #25 Q I agree with you that hate speech laws in general are horrible.
This is of course as opposed to laws that ban someone calling for someone else's death (a specific somebody I mean).
And yes, I think that Hate Speech laws corrupt the "marketplace of ideas" and therefore, even if inadvertently, give the upper hand to asshats like Le Pen and Nazi, White Supremacists, Fascists, Islamofascists and all groups who are "haters" in the same sense, in that marketplace of ideas.

re: #36 Ward Cleaver

The 908cdi is quite something, and has a bit more power than the R10, but it's reliability seems similar to the 1982 505 turbo diesel my mom and dad owned. Thrice the entire front wheel assembly emancipated itself from the car when cornering. It also developed a leak in the fuel injection which spewed #2 diesel all over the cylinder head.

I think he did that many years ago.
Now, if only he had invested that euro, he'd have enough today for a few tanks of gas, even w/ Europrices.

46 DamnCat  Fri, May 2, 2008 10:48:04am

It must be very disheartening for someone like Le Pen to realize that no one cares enough about him to try shooting him. I mean, when you aspire to be a modern-day Hitler you expect someone would want to kill you badly enough to justify keeping an armored car. How very sad,

snicker...

You can getted fined for that? Unless you were Jewish during the Nazi occupation, what Le Pen said was largley true. Most of the French gave a Gallic shrug & got along quite well with their Nazi overlords.

Engels proclaimed it Marx's journal the Neue Rheinische Zeitung in January-February 1849 and ever since then everyone who has advocated genocide has called himself a socialist, without exception.

In Mein Kampf (1926) Hitler accepted that National Socialism was a derivative of Marxism. The point was more bluntly made in private conversations. ``The whole of National Socialism is based on Marx,'' he told Hermann Rauschning.

So my question is this: where does Reuters get off calling Le Pen a "French far-right leader"

As far as I'm concerned, he's a leftist. Plain and simple. Anybody care to disagree?

Were NAZIs left or right?

Dang, he's barely touched that car. Most '92s I've seen have well over twice that mileage. Of course, LePen is in France, and it is a Peugeot, but still...
