Daily Kos Defends Hizballah Supporters

Fri, May 2, 2008 at 10:22:14 am PDT

An extended defense of Dearborn Arab-Americans who support the terrorist group Hizballah, by a Daily Kos front page writer: Daily Kos: McCain, Hezbollah, Arab-Americans and Bigots.

As Tapper points out, Jawad has said things about Hezbollah that make it sound less sinister than one would think a group would be to make the State Department’s list of terrorist organizations.  Well, he’s not the only person in the area to not condemn Hezbollah; the range of attitudes of Lebanese in Dearborn is probably centered somewhere between ambivalent to fairly supportive.  Many of the Dearborn Lebanese come from a handful of villages in Southern Lebanon, within a few miles of the Israeli border.  Thus, they come from the heartland of Hezbollah.  Their home villages were used by the PLO to stage raids in Israel during the early 1970’s—there is often animosity between Lebanese Shiites and Palestinians, for many Lebanese blame Palestinians for destabilizing Lebanon—the area was occupied by Israel for many years, and it was only after years of fierce attacks by Hezbollah that Israel abandoned Southern Lebanon.  In the eyes of many Lebanese, Hezbollah liberated their home villages from Israeli occuption.

Hezbollah is now the de facto government of Southern Lebanon, and provides social services as well fights Israel.  Many people in Dearborn have family ties to major players in Lebanese Shiite politics.  And Lebanese in Dearborn view Hezbollah with much the same mix of distrust mixed with nationalist pride and identity that Catholic residents or former residents of IRA-controlled neighborhoods in Belfast or Derry view the IRA.  Most Lebanese in Dearborn came here to escape war, but that doesn’t mean they don’t identify with one faction more than the others.  In Dearborn, many identify  with Hezbollah.

But whatever their views about their home country, most Arabs in Southeast Michigan view themselves as Arab-Americans, and that’s how they’re viewed by most of their non-Arab neighbors. In the Middle East, most would be viewed hostilely by the Sunni terrorist groups like Al Qaeda, because most Arabs around Detroit are Shiite or Christian. They moved to the US to escape problems back home, and have settled in. They often hate the foreign policy of their adopted country, but they love being Americans. And in Michigan, they are political players.

Um, doesn't this effort to explain why it's perfectly normal for a bunch of people living in Michigan to just love Hezbollah actually argue the point that we should really be deporting those people as quickly as possible?

The Arab community, its place in Michigan, and its ties to the Middle East are complicated. However, what's simple is that Debbie Schussel hates Arabs.

What's simple is the writer is a douchebag, IMHO.

No terrorists are associated with Islam; those who are terrorists are perverting the faith

Maybe someone should remind the "expert" that Southern Lebanon is not a country, and the UN has stamped its approval on Israel's withdrawal.

There is no occupation of Leb or Gaza.

23 coquimbojoe  Fri, May 2, 2008 10:32:34am

The McCain campaign is afraid to offend the far right.

Funny that the Kosling doesn't consider HizbAllah to be "far right".

So they ditched Ali Jawad rather than deal with Debbie Schussel

That's right, McCain is just afraid of Debbie Schussel.

29 Ben Hur  Fri, May 2, 2008 10:34:32am

But of course, his point of defending HizbALLAH is not out of any real love for the Lebs or even hizbALLAH, his motivation is to stick it to the Joos.

G-d forbid anyone should tell him about the much higher standard of living the Christian Lebs enjoyed "under Israeli occupation."

I'm proud to say that she is the member of the House of Representatives representing MY district!
Got a "taped" phone call from her the other day - said "I'm Sue Myrick and I represent you in Congress. If you'd like to hear my views on Islamic Jihad press #1; If you'd like to hear my views on the Economy, press #2; if you'd like to leave a brief message with your name and phone number press #3. If you'd like to do all three, press the "Star" key."
I was astounded that she had such a sophisticated (for a politician, anyway) phone message.
I'm VERY GLAD that she's my Representative.

'Once again we have a case where a politician has no problem with dumping on Arab-Americans because of ethnic stereotyping. It's like accusing Italians in the 1940's of all being tied to the Mafia, or thinking that every Salvadoran that comes in to the US today is connected to a violent drug gang.'

. It's another case of those typical white people with their ethnic stereotyping.

I hope to have my report ready some time tomorrow afternoon....

How about you, did you go out and take some shots?

OT - Amnesty International is test marketing their commerical against waterboarding to make sure it persuades people to think waterboarding is torture.

Think about that. They aren't seeking to get the word out about something everyone knows is wrong, they are seeking to change people's minds about what is wrong.

If only they would spend that kind of effort fighting real evil instead of protecting the worst scum on the planet from discomfort. How about a film on the beheading of the three little Christian girls?

57 WrathofG-d  Fri, May 2, 2008 11:37:00am

I believe this to be just another example of (a) History repeating itself, and (b) history not living up to myth.

Naziism and genocide has been transformed in the public consciousness of something other worldly, something that purely evil individuals do. We think of Hitler not as a man, born like everyone else, who decided to convince other, otherwise normal, human beings to commit atrocious acts, but instead an evil character, spawn of evil itself, who brainwashed other evil beings into performing unthinkable acts.

The facts are however, that when you listen to his speeches, read the documents, etc., the actual evil that was Hitler and Naziism, was very brilliantly hidden and legitamized. They had a myriad of great reasons of why Naziism and Fascism were the way to go. He didn't come out and state that "I will be the new god who will rule the world and murder all of those that disagree with me, as I force fascist dictatorship on the planet, and work toward the full genocide of the Jewish people", but instead promised hope, security, progress, change, and a better tomorrow. One could legitamize Hitler and Naziism by their spouted ideals, and so-called reasons/justifications. We must remember that Hitler and the Nazis were the guys that invented the Autobaund, the VW, the Jet Engine, and was against animal cruelty. But to do so would force you to ignore what truly was the hallmark of Naziism and Adolf Hitler. (the hate, murder, genocide, violence, egotism, and social control)

I see this as the problem that many on the Left are having today. They legitiamize Hiz'b'allah, Hamas, and Terrorism in general because they do not see that evil comes in everyday form. They expect "hiter" types to not be average men "fighting for their cause", with "legitamate" grievances, but instead to be obvious, maniacal characters of human beings. (which would explain Rosie's famous "They are brothers, and fathers" comment) This however is not, and has not ever been the case. After gassing thousands of Jews in Aushwitz, etc., during the day, the Nazi guards and soldiers spent time with their wives and dogs, had picniks and kissed their kids goodnight. (there is a good program [on PBS, I believe] which just came out on this).

Thus, when the Left thinks of Hiz'b'allah, Hamas, etc., they choose to ignore the reality that these people are evil and performing horriffic acts, and instead only looking at the shell of positive claims that they make.

58 L. King  Fri, May 2, 2008 12:04:12pm

A reminder:

A last August there was a billboard put up across the river in Windsor Ontario that was pro-Hezbollah put up by some Lebanese immigrants. The Lebanese Christian immigrants got really upset (Hezbollah is probably the reason they left) as did the Jewish community. The billboard was taken down after a few days. The picture of Nasrallah did it. Hezbollah is recognized as a terrorist organization.

62 Joan Not of Arc  Fri, May 2, 2008 12:09:06pm
And Lebanese in Dearborn view Hezbollah with much the same mix of distrust mixed with nationalist pride and identity that Catholic residents or former residents of IRA-controlled neighborhoods in Belfast or Derry view the IRA.

I cannot speak for the residents of Dearborn, but in the late nineties, the Irish had had it with the IRA and Sinn Fein and the polls showed it.
I know it is customary for Kos to make generalisations but it really wouldn't hurt to crack open a book or do some other kind of research. Besides, if the IRA had pulled what Hezbollah had pulled, people, including Kos, would be screaming bloody murder. One terrorist is not the same as the other, I suppose.
Just my thoughts.

The comments on Kos diaries can be such fun...

Republicans might be racist but their actual policies towards the Middle East are no different from those of the Democrats.

Well, I suppose they might be, but they're also the party that a) freed the slaves, b) used the military to force court-ordered integration, and c) overcame the Democrat filibuster and passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Reasonable folks (i.e., non-Koslings) can draw their own conclusions.

This is what makes me proud to be a Democrat...that our party is, at its heart, truly above that sort of petty racism/hate and we are truly inclusive and understanding.
Aw, that's sweet. But are they also above something as petty and hateful as branding all Republicans as "racist"? If you're not sure, see the above quote.

Moral equivalence is a form of spiritual maturity and the enemy of those who seek to divide and conquer.

No, it's a form of stupidity and the enemy of those who want good to triumph over evil.

Or, if you're a Kosling uncomfortable with "good" and "evil", it's the enemy of those who want civilization and liberty to triumph over barbarism and tyranny.

69 shibumi  Fri, May 2, 2008 2:38:27pm

Very sad, but true. On both sides of the aisle. Which makes it difficult for the ordinary voter to figure out who isn't beholden to the jihadi.

70 offendi  Fri, May 2, 2008 2:47:42pm

What I find that is extremely wonderful is that the extreme idiots at Kos are increasingly driving a wedge between their "demo-idiots" and the American Jewish community that in the past voted for and provided financial support for democratic candidates un-critically. Frankly, the democratic party needs them more than the stupid gen-xers who don't have a money pot to piss in as reflected by Kos-ie.

Like many people in this country, American Jews will look forward to the confidence of the voting booth. They may sit on their hands this year, and deliver victory to the republicans, especially since Lieberman endorsed McCain.

And given Kos' nonsense, isn't it time American Jews make friends with the Turks and not the pro-Arab Greeks?
