For the sheer everlovin’ heck of it, one of the funniest bits from one of the all-time funniest movies, with the great Madeline Kahn as Bavarian temptress Lilly von Schtupp.

Years ago, Robert Klein had a summer replacement tv show. Madeline Kahn did the introduction using major speech impediment. She had been a speech therapist and really was funny.

24 Bookworm  Fri, May 2, 2008 2:10:23pm

I saw this movie 25 years ago when I lived in Northern England. It was a bit unnerving because, for the most part, I was the only one in the theater laughing.

After the movie, I tried to explain some of the Yiddish jokes to my Brit friends. When it got to the name Lily von Schtupp, one of my friends, who had a quick sense of humor, absorbed the definition for a second and then asked, "Is that like the Restoration play, She Schtupps to Conquer?" It's a great pun that always springs to mind when I see this bit.

Hi all,
Ever since stumbling across LGF I wondered if it would be worthwhile to be able to view the comments in a tree structure, so I wrote a script to check it out. Here's a link to a snap-shot of this morning's open LGF comment thread rearranged into a tree-structure view. Instead of displaying the comments in numerical order, it groups related comments so it's easier to follow any sub-threads.

So, FWIW, for anyone interested in what tree-structured LGF comment threads might look like, here's one: 29809_Friday_Early_Morning_Open

55 moonflower  Fri, May 2, 2008 2:18:16pm

I guess this is an open thread.

This is in memory of my beloved little schipperke, Anna, who passed away last week at the age of 13 1/2. She was a mighty dog who had no idea she weighed only 8 pounds. She loved to travel and go for walks and supervise all activities of the house and just love us. We are heartbroken over her passing.

Go with God Anna. Good Dog.

You of course forget that " Space Balls" was also a seminal work of Mel Brooks. I can see Hillary Clinton, dressed on leather, as the "Empress".
Or maybe as the Tina Turner character in "Thunderdome", and Bill as the midget empire-enabler.

I don't think Blazing Saddle's could be made in today's PC environment....

You could not be more correct. I worked with him on the original Broadway version of "The Producers" and there were bits in there that had to be dropped because they were deemed to be too over the top. However, some versions of the musical did show them anyway. I am speaking specifically of the version of "I Want To Be A Producer" that had a black accountant singing in Paul Robeson fashion. That was dropped out of some productions.

Thank you Miss Trixie. I know you understand, being a dog lover yourself. She apparently had bone cancer, altho it was unknown to us. Never a symptom, until she fell and shattered her leg. It was so unexpected.

Thank you - I lost my greyhound suddenly on Monday. And like an idiot I went to the Humane Society today and came home with this.

:O

What an adorable dog.
It is heartwrenching to lose one's dear dog - but at least for her and you it was sudden, and no long suffering.

I lost my beloved Big Dog - a Border Collie rescue dog - two months ago. He was so ill, he had a tumour, but was too old to be operated on. I couldn't let him go on suffering, just for the sake of a few more days. I cried my eyes out - and I wrote everything down, like a daily lament. It helped.

In that same thread buzzsawmonkey wrote you a poem, i wrote you about the Legend of the rainbow brisge.
if he can find it - ist somewhere towards the end.
Otehrwise, I'll gladly repeat it here for all other dog lovers.

Ringo, I beg to differ. If Mama is looking for a companion to cherish and keep her healthy, the new puppy-baby seems to fit the bill. Protection comes in many forms. A affectionate, noisy pooch ain't bad protection from what usually harms us, lack of affection.

Everything else - that outweighs the downside by a huge amount!
I've always thought that one has to accept grief and pain as part of life - otherwise one has no capacity for feeling the joy and love which is out there.
Dogs are just so incredible - each different, but all loving and trusting.
I'm glad you have another one who needs looking after, and who wags her tail and gives you all her love!
I've still got my Miss Dog - she is 11 now, also a Border collie rescue dog - ah, when I wanted to howl, she came to see if I was ok, and licked my face ...
Our dogs live on in our hearts, and they do wait for us over on that other side. I know that. I saw, when my father died, a flash of him walking away, with his four dog saccompanying him, two each on either side - they all had died before him.
Love never dies. Love is stronger than death.

I don't have a dog, but I walk a neighbor's dog almost every day. I work at home during the day, most days, and the poor thing sits there and barks disconsolately. So I talked the neighbor in to letting me walk him. It's good for the dog, and it's good for me too. It is about a 65 pound, all black dog. I don't really know what it is, but it seems to me like a pointer type. Won't go in the water, but it does point at doves as we walk.

I kept looking for my Big Dog in the park when I was walking Miss Dog, and it took weeks for me to stop that. Ah - that is where your new companion comes in! She'll pick that up from you in no time - dogs always know when it is their dinner time!
My little one also had to learn this, as it was always the Big Dog who was punctual for his dinner, and he could be very insistent if it didn't happen on time!

Ah - see, now that is what dogs do to us: they show us how wonderful it is to be alive, to enjoy the small things like running around, engaging with someone, enjoying this minute, here, this play with a ball - it transfers onto us, it shows us that we actually also can enjoy these things.

I got it on Blu-Ray a last month when Charles informed us about the buy two get one free sale at Amazon.com. The funny part was that I ended up buying 9 Blu-Ray discs and at the time I didn't even own a Blu-Ray player. I did my research and shortly thereafter, bought a player. Hey I did my patriotic duty and spent my stimulus check to help the economy. LOL, who's kidding who? Blazing Saddles was on my list of DVD's to aquire and I waited to see which HiDef formats would win out. When Blu-Ray won, I went on a spending spree to show my patriotism. 174 mardukhai  Fri, May 2, 2008 3:42:50pm

The song was written by Mel Brooks, but the name, Lily von Schtupp, and the scene, were stolen from another funny film, The Great Race.

In that film, the evil baron defeated by The Great Leslie (Tony Curtis) was Baron Rolfe von Schtuppe.

Earlier in the film, the villainous Professor Fate started a saloon brawl just after Miss Lilly Olay, played by Dorothy Provine, sang "You shouldn'ta hadn'ta oughtn'ta swang on me!"

Coincidence? I think not. But Mel Brooks' version was funnier.

If I'm not mistaken, Blazing Saddles was the first movie to cross such a line in comedy. Even the N word was used a number of times, and in Yiddish, too!

I've come to the conclusion that only people of a certain race/religion can poke fun at themselves and it be truly funny. Meaning, Jews can only pull off Jewish humor, Blacks only Black humor, Catholics and so on. It just doesn't seem to work at the same level otherwise. Like Southpark. I like the show, but their Jewish humor is stupid, and actually I find it offensive at points. Altho I still watch it.

Thank you. She was a member of our family. The true heart of the house.

As they always are. I have had many pets over the years and buried all but one in our yard. The heartbreaks their passing on caused was a lesson in life for my kids and who am I kidding, myself as well. It prepared me for the passing of my dad 2 years ago.

The one I didn't bury haunts me to this day. Missy was a great lab and friend to the family that was very old and in pain. The vet advised me to put her down was the most compassionate thing I could do for an old friend. It took me two weeks of struggling to accept his advice. I watched as she suffered and notified the kids of what was to happen and they begged to go with me on what would be her last car ride. We all took the trip to send off a most wonderful friend. Needless to say, there wasn't a dry eye in the house for two days. I'm tearing up as I type. That was 5 years ago. Sorry.

ONLY Mel Brooks could get away with it!

My favorite "Blazing Saddles" factoid:

Brooks tried to get John Wayne to play the alcoholic gunman role later played by Gene Wilder.

[Link: blogs.amctv.com...]

So Brooks approached John Wayne about the role of the drunk, worn-out old gunfighter. “I met John Wayne at the commissary,” Brooks recalled. “I gave the script to him. He said, ‘I’ll meet you here tomorrow at 12 noon, the same table. I’ll read this overnight.’ And he read it and he said, ‘I can’t do this. This is too dirty. I’m John Wayne. But man, I was up all night screaming, laughing. I’m gonna be the first one on line to see this movie.’”

How in the hell did Mel Brooks ever make this movie? The frequency with which he slops around the N word makes me gasp.

Not to mention "I go away fer five minutes and you're all dancing around like a buncha Kansas City queers!"

Or Cleavon Little: "Hey! Where de white women at?"

Completely un-PC, and uproariously funny.

But I've got to ask the black folks here - do you feel offended at any of the humor here? I mean, it's pretty edgy. Is this over the line?

190 littleO  Fri, May 2, 2008 6:03:22pm

Blazing Saddles was funny. But, Younge Frankenstien(steen), which also had Madeline in it, and A Fish Called Wanda, with a smoking Jamie Lee Curtis, were even better comedy.

I guess I am too serious for Mel Brooks humor. I always ask myself what is it about being a Jew that makes these guys so good at coarse jesting?

It's their Noble Prize gene.

I am glad to see you back Mama Winger and my deepest condolences. I know your dear one is in Heaven and will be there to greet you with great joy when you return there in many years time.
As for Blazing Saddles, it is a hysterical film by Brooks, and tied in my book with Young Frankenstein as his greatest films. Sad that Gene Wilder left him after that, both he and Gene never achieved that level of greatness again after their parting. And God please don't let Mel put Blazing Saddles on Broadway, like he made a monstrous version of Young Frankenstein there. The film is perfect, the cast and story was perfect. You don't tamper with perfection. You can save four hundred dollars by renting the movie, there was nothing you could add or change or portray live that would be better than this film.
The same could not be said with the Producers, one of my least favorite films by Brooks, although Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder are great (and Wilder's Linus blanket routine is priceless) but the writing and story overall were mediocre, so I am glad that it was rehabilitated and improved on Broadway.
End of my critique. I wish Mr. Brooks much success on the future.
And please no Star Wars on Broadway. Leave well enough alone. Or, to put it another way, If t'ain't broke, don't fix it.

Great choice, Charles. Blazing Saddles is one of my favorite movies of all time. It's the most Un-PC movie I have ever seen, and makes me laugh out loud every time even though I have probably seen it 20 times.

For more information on the movie, go here:
Blazing Saddles on IMDB

Little known fact: Richard Pryor was originally supposed to play the role of Bart - thank goodness they chose Cleavon - he made the movie.
