Tech Note: Re-Send the Activation Email

Fri, May 2, 2008 at 5:10:44 pm PDT

A new feature tonight, especially for the newly hatched among us.

Our registration system works by sending an email containing a link that must be clicked to activate the account. But occasionally this confirmation email does not reach the hapless hatchling.

Some think the most common cause of this problem is over-zealous spam filters. Others attribute it to conspiracies or hidden forces.

Regardless of the reason, it’s a continuing annoyance because until today the only way to re-send the email was for me to do it manually. (Well, semi-manually; there’s a button I can click in the Overlord Tool.)

From experience, I’ve noticed that re-sending the email will often work in many of these cases. So now the process is semi-automated instead of semi-manual; the new feature allows you to enter the email address you registered, and if the account has not yet been confirmed it will send you another copy of the email containing your special activation link.

This new feature shows up in the login box at the top of the left sidebar when you are not logged in, with a link titled “Re-send Confirmation.” If you try to use it with an account that’s already confirmed (or blocked) you’ll see a brusque but polite error message.

What do I plan to do with my copious free time now that this burden has been lifted from me? I may take up golf.

Oh, and ... registration is now open for a limited time.

Mugabe to contest Zimbabwe run-off, MDC cries foulHARARE (Reuters) -

Zimbabwean leader Robert Mugabe accepted that the opposition's Morgan Tsvangirai won more votes in the presidential election and will contest a run-off in a political battle that has raised fears of bloodshed.

Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) cried foul after Zimbabwe's electoral body announced on Friday that he had won 47.9 percent of the vote but faces a run-off after failing to gain enough votes for an outright majority.

The MDC described the announcement of the long-delayed result as "scandalous daylight robbery." It says Tsvangirai won more than 50 percent of the vote in the March 29 election and Mugabe's 28-year rule is over.

Feet first, only way Mugabe is going is feet first.

re: #89 Charles

Hi, Charles . Speaking of usability, I have a question about functionality.

Not sure if it's my browser, or laptop monitor dimensions, or what, but whenever I hit "reply" or "quote" and am positioned at the bottom, the "New Comments" and "Show Links" buttons are at the top while the comment box is cut off at the bottom, meaning that the "post this comment" button is off the bottom, such that I have to click off the comment box and scroll down. Generally not a big deal but on the long threads, I get the hour-glass and sit patiently waiting, sometimes for a minute or so (as you know, an eternity while waiting for the system to respond!)...

Would it be possible to anchor the repositioning such that the "post" button is always visible? I'd greatly appreciate it...

Thanks in advance....

Also, a quick suggestion -- if you placed the "-" or"+" rating buttons on either side of the displayed rating count, you would likely get fewer mis-rates...

This clip made me laugh. I actually watched all of the RW's youtube-d NAACP speech, and I didn't find it offensive. Devisive perhaps, but not offensive.

'Corse, i'm not white... well, 50%, tops (and that 50% goes back to Robert E Lee, so you never know:)

However, could a white man have gotten away with the same (albeit reversed) speech? Doubt it. Could McCain's 'spiritual advisor'?

Just saying... is all I'm saying

Thanks - I'm in!

My hung registration was due to a bellsouth.net e-mail that defaulted to deleting spam, and a bad assumption on my part. YES, I know the saying! :-

I thought at the worst I'd have to dig the e-mail out of a junk-mail folder, and should have checked settings since it's an e-mail account I never used.

Anyway, great new feature - I'm turning scaly already.

re: #162 Original Kolya

Kolya,
I think you need to click the new "Re-send confirmation" link (when you're logged out of "Original Kolya") and put in whatever land-based e-mail addy you had tried to subscribe "Kolya" under. Then you'll be a two-headed lizard with unstoppable hydra-like power!

172 MichaelUSA  Sat, May 3, 2008 4:52:15am

re: #162 Original Kolya

Or does that apply only to hung "recent" registrations?

173 JohnTant  Sat, May 3, 2008 6:01:01am

My first comment!

Thanks, Charles, for everything. I've been a fan ever since Memogate but haven't been able to time my visits with the registration openings. Finally, I made it a few days ago! Only problem is, by the time I get to where I'm reading a new post there are already 100+ comments to it. Hard to come up with something that hasn't already been said with that kind of participation.

And if you do decide to take up golf, the first round is on me.

174 Pro-Bush Canuck  Sat, May 3, 2008 7:55:29am

Completely - and I mean completely off-topic.

GE appliances are truly inferior.

So far, since I bought this condo in Toronto:

- Dishwasher refused to drain the first time it was turned on
- Dishwasher does not actuallly wash dishes
- Dishwasher does slosh water around, accompanied by a loud buzzing noise, for about 40 minutes.
- Microwave has approximately 30 buttons.
- Apparently there is a way to re-heat a pizza slice in a GE microwave
- This involves the manual to figure out which buttons to press

Seriously though. I worked for GE in Louisville back in the 1990s. It has gone downhill from there.
