Tech Note: Re-Send the Activation Email
Fri, May 2, 2008 at 5:10:44 pm PDT
A new feature tonight, especially for the newly hatched among us.
Our registration system works by sending an email containing a link that must be clicked to activate the account. But occasionally this confirmation email does not reach the hapless hatchling.
Some think the most common cause of this problem is over-zealous spam filters. Others attribute it to conspiracies or hidden forces.
Regardless of the reason, it’s a continuing annoyance because until today the only way to re-send the email was for me to do it manually. (Well, semi-manually; there’s a button I can click in the Overlord Tool.)
From experience, I’ve noticed that re-sending the email will often work in many of these cases. So now the process is semi-automated instead of semi-manual; the new feature allows you to enter the email address you registered, and if the account has not yet been confirmed it will send you another copy of the email containing your special activation link.
This new feature shows up in the login box at the top of the left sidebar when you are not logged in, with a link titled “Re-send Confirmation.” If you try to use it with an account that’s already confirmed (or blocked) you’ll see a brusque but polite error message.
What do I plan to do with my copious free time now that this burden has been lifted from me? I may take up golf.
Oh, and ... registration is now open for a limited time.
