Extremist violence rocks Hamburg

Left-wing demonstrators angered by a neo-Nazi rally hurled bottles at police and set cars and rubbish bins ablaze. Police responded with water cannon.

Lovely.

20 red collar  Sat, May 3, 2008 8:35:43pm

As far as I know, the Sadr City air strike was a success.

If insurgents were hit, that's good for us. If civilians had died, then insurgents would have had some propaganda to spread out.

Broken glass and broken ambulances. I feel for the wounded but it could have gone wrong. I'm glad it didn't.

You know, Hezbollah has been known to use the hospitals themselves as headquarters. Hell, Hezbollah has used UN ambulances to make their getaway. This Sadr City headquarters thing sounds a lot like "human shields" to me, putting it up there next to a hospital.

Counter-Insurgency is like ballet, imho. It's a fine line between failure and success, so God bless all those involved.

Good night, lizards.

90 abolitionist  Sat, May 3, 2008 8:59:36pm

I was curious about how popular some names were, and found this interesting tool:

Baby Name Wizard - NameVoyager: Explore name trends letter by letter

It requires Java enabled, and gives a text and graphics presentation of popularity of first names, decade by decade. You can mouse over areas to easily find popular names. Alternatively, at the prompt at top left, you can type in one or more letters, and narrow down the amount of info presented, even down to a single name.

For example, popularity of the name Barry peaked in the 1950s and 1960s, at about 1200 or so per million.

Presumably the database is for the US.

Beaver

Gynecological sense ("female genitals, especially with a display of pubic hair") is 1927 British slang, transferred from earlier meaning "a bearded man" (1910), from the appearance of split beaver pelts.

re: #89 MandyManners

Dunno, Mandy.

I once heard an early-60s rock instrumental titled "Beaver Shot" (slang for a full-nude photo of a woman -- verboten in those days), and it opens with the singer yelling, "Dig that craaaazy pelt!" Maybe it's the "fur" thing.

I could explain "pussy" more easily, but it's kind of a nasty story (hint: it's a corruption of a common French word for a kind of edible animal.)

Yes, and not just for one comment, either -- for a series of insults.

It's kind of like being invited into someone's beautifully kept home, insulting the host's taste, peeing on the rug, then asking "when's dinner?"

For whatever reason, he was being really negative. I know his sis is diagnosed with C, and I tried to tell him that you have got to think positive - negativity just feeds the illness. People with C or who might have C need positive, loving people, not negative, heavy-handed, depressed and angry people. When I had C, I thought positive, and the people around me reflected that and did not hang negativity all around me. His sis needs anything but dispair and lashing out at the moment. Lashing out in weakness hurts only one's self.

She surprised the world by finishing second and the just collapsed after the finish line with two broken front ankles. She died trying to play catch up with Big Brown, who ran an incredible race. That horse is amazing. He was just toying with the field until the last 1/4 mile when it took off and left the rest far behind. Its like he was jogging while every other horse was running for most of the race.

Sad about Eight Belles though. Must suck to have to go through life knowing that if you get a broken ankle they'll just kill you.

I listened to the talk with Brian Thacker, a Vietnam Vet and Medal of Honor recipient today. Absolutely amazing what the human body can endure. This guy spent 8 days hiding in a bamboo thicket surrounded by the enemy --didn't move, make a sound or sleep soundly for fear of snoring -no food, little water--6 months recovery once he was finally extracted.

We owe so much to our Veteran's, IMHO, the very least I can do is to learn their stories.

re: #207 laZardo

Isn't anger one of the five stages of whatever those were though?

I think I had already hit and passed the first few stages. When I was diagnosed, within the previous six months:
I found out my husband was a heroin addict (he called me from the addictions center, where he had checked himself in)
We declared bankruptcy
My cat died (he was only seven - we don't know what it was)
My husband left me
My mother died in a fall

So by the time C happened, I was pretty darn strong, having coped with a lot of stuff at once. What helped me the most was the advice I sought and received when my husband left me. I had some great counseling that made all the difference in all the things that happened. Made me a stronger - and I think better - person.

And my ex went with me to the doctor and to the hospital with me, though we were separated. He also went with me to bury my mother. He was there for me, though we were separating.

The show has been on the air since 1975 and has had dozens of great cast members who went on to long movie and TV careers, it would take a looong post to list them all. And yet it has only ever won two Emmy's. So they do a great job casting, but as for the writing, not so much.

To write good satire you have to know whatever it is that you are making fun of. Conservatives know the left because we are surrounded by it in the media and schools. It's part of the air we breathe. The left can't make fun of us and be funny because they don't even know us. The best they can to is scoff at strawmen they have created in their minds.
Jeff Foxworthy is funny. Obama never could be.

Hi Lizards,
Yesterday we had a thread about Marty Parrish, the guy who claimed to be a Southern Baptist minister and asked McCain about calling his wife a rude word. I wrote to his minister. Here is his response:

Marty Parrish was never ordained by any church as far as I know. His membership is in the church and when he was a teen-ager he made a committment to become a minister. After being away for many years, He recently returned for a few weeks, but has not been in the church for several months. The church at that time (more than 30 years ago) issued a liscense which is no more than an acknowledgement that he had made the committment to be a minister. he did not serve at any southern baptist church that I know of and is not nor has he ever been a minister at our church or any other at this time. He is not an active memberof FBC West Memphis. He is a very sick man. I regret what he said and that it has become news. I especially regret that he is claiming to be a member of the church. I am his pastor and I care for him, but he does not represent our church in any way. Ron Kirkland, Pastor

I remember seeing that at the time. I'll be honest - I thought it was boring. The brothers thing was interesting, though, and I did like the Carradines. It just had too many stars and not enough depth.

Interesting Web Site:

Who have you outlived?

You enter your birthday and click Search, and it lists relatively famous people who died at or near your current age.

For example, when I enter my birthdate, I'm informed that, so far, I have lived 33 days longer than did Joseph McCarthy, and 16 days longer did than Vince Foster. If you try it, set the "Fame Level" selector to "Low".

This is just sad:

April 29 was "Beach Impeach V" day, the fifth "Beach Impach" event in San Francisco. However, turnout was so sparse (only 250 people showed up -- the worst attendance ever [even I didn't bother going]), that they had real problems filling up the proposed message "IMPEACH BOTH! !" with bodies.

So this was their solution: they had people fill in a few letters at a time, then have the helicopter take their picture, then all run over and fill in the next letters, repeat, etc., until they had aerial photos of each letter at least filled in at some point.

Then (as had been previously planned), they got a Photoshop jockey to piece together the various photos into a "composite" that made it look like all the letters were filled in at the same time. The final products can be viewed here:

Beach Impeach V composite photos

The have a "panorama view" and a "postcard view" with the same words, but in different configurations.

Now, they're not trying to pretend that the photos are real -- they're up-front about them being Photoshops -- but the funny part is how they had to scramble and use post-production digital manipulation to "salvage" the event and make it look like there is a huge pro-impeachment movement.

Totally, utterly pathetic. Even in moonbat world headquarters, they can't rustle up more than 250 Impeach-heads to come to the beach on a sunny Saturday. Attendance was less than 20% of the high-water mark of earlier Beach Impeach events.

Oh, how sad to be a moonbat in these waning days of relevance!

Hi Lizards,
Yesterday we had a thread about Marty Parrish, the guy who claimed to be a Southern Baptist minister and asked McCain about calling his wife a rude word.

Wow!

Wow, I don't know any of these people who died around my age:

Although, after clicking their links, I notice that three of them were on the Space Shuttle Columbia, and one was in the movie and TV show, Fame. One was an ex-KISS drummer (replaced by Peter Criss). But I never would have recognized their names!

I only knew 2 names in your list. The two actors. I would have recognized names from the Challenger crew, but I'm ashamed to say I didn't recognize the names from the Columbia crew.

Ulrike Meinhof. Would that be the tail end of the Baader-Meinhof terrorist gang?

Yep, that's her...
Here's what the link says:

Member of the notorious Baader-Meinhof terrorist gang (also known as the Red Army Faction) that was active in Germany in the 1970s, hanged herself in prison

UGH!

If you haven't seen it this is one of my favorite old westerns Angel and The Bad Man 1947.

I've seen it - another good one.

They ran a lot of these flicks back when I was a teen on late night TV and on Saturdays, and I've seen a heck of a lot of John Wayne movies and John Ford movies. Don't remember ever being disappointed by either of them, alone or working together.

412 zombie  Sat, May 3, 2008 11:00:26pm

If we're talking about unforgettable horror films, the best, by far, is "Dead of Night." I have seen tens of thousand of films in my life, and that is the only film I ever gave a "ten out of ten" rating to. As close to being the "perfect" film as any in history.

Just the thought of it gives me chills. It is the prototype for much of what followed in the subsequent decades. HIGHLY recommended. But note: if you do watch it, make sure to watch from the VERY FIRST FRAME to the VERY LAST FRAME, because (as you will see) the whole film interlocks. Also, for the full effect: DO NOT READ SPOILERS ahead of time.

It has one minor flaw, the goofy humor of the "golf" sequence, featuring a pair of comic actors popular at the time. Aside from that -- wow. You will never forget it.

Easily the best horror film ever made. (And in some people's opinion, the best film of any kind ever made.)

I'm purposely not linking to online descriptions of it, because there are too many spoilers floating around. Just rent it: Dead of Night, made in 1945, in Britain.

I was wondering if anyone see parallels between Obamas claims of ignorance about the contents of 20 years of sermons of Reverend Wright and the Austrian, Fritzels incestuous relationship with his daughter over 24 years. Just as the Austrian, Fritzel locked away his aberrant perversity, has Obama done something similar? Oh yeah, one more thing, would the press care to take the trouble to look into Barack's over the past 20 years life just a teeny tiny bit, in between the time they devote to giving him a daily Lewinsky?

Interesting Web Site:

Who have you outlived?

You enter your birthday and click Search, and it lists relatively famous people who died at or near your current age.

For example, when I enter my birthdate, I'm informed that, so far, I have lived 33 days longer than did Joseph McCarthy, and 16 days longer did than Vince Foster. If you try it, set the "Fame Level" selector to "Low".

Hmmmm. I've outlived
Jack Ruby
Bill Haley
Paul Lynde
Lee Remick

and I know who they all are.

Whenever I heard Libs talk about impeaching W, I would just say "President Cheney! woot!" and the Libs would get this stupid look on their faces.

I guess that is where the "Impeach Both" came from.

Yup.

But, considering that the full impeachment-and-conviction process takes a minimum of about six months per indictee, if they start today they'll finish impeaching Bush and Cheney about May of 2009, four months into McCain's first term.

Zom, I've heard that is one of the all-time classics, but I've never seen it. Wonder if Netflix stocks it...

My favorite pure-ghost/-horror film of all time is the original THE HAUNTING, with Julie Christie as the neurotic clairvoyant. Another good 'un is CARNIVAL OF SOULS, which was made around the same time for something like $5,000, and created one of the most nightmarish of all film atmospheres.

Sounds like what people say when they're on LSD and think they're being profound, like my favorite: Profound pause, then..."When I stand on my toes, I can touch the ceiling!" Heard it at a talk by a guy who had been a student of Dr. Timothy Leary's, back in the turn on tune in drop out days.

John McCain is not part of the equation that I was referring to. What I am curious about is how far one can deviate from reality into a world of perversity and still claim ignorance and innocence. Wright as Fritzel and Obama as Fritizels wife and neighbors, however, Obama (and his wife) without an intervening dungeon.
