Al Jazeera Cameraman: Gitmo the 'Most Heinous Prison Mankind Has Ever Known'

Tue, May 6, 2008 at 3:19:57 pm PDT

That Al Jazeera cameraman recently released from Guantanamo Bay was dragged out of his hospital bed (he’s the victim of a hunger strike) and propped up in front of the cameras by the Sudanese regime yesterday in Khartoum, to say that the Gitmo facility was the absolute worst prison in all of human history.

It was heinous.

KHARTOUM, Sudan - An Al-Jazeera cameraman released from the U.S.-run Guantanamo Bay detention center last week described it Monday as the worst prison mankind has ever seen.

Sami al-Haj, a Sudanese citizen, was whisked from his hospital bed in a convoy escorted by police cars with flashing lights and wailing sirens to an outdoor event in his neighborhood organized by his family. His speech was broadcast live on Sudanese television.

“After 2,340 days spent in the most heinous prison mankind has ever known, we are honored to be here. Thank you, and thank all those defended us and of our right in freedom,” he told the cheering crowd.

.S. Challenges Condition of Gitmo Detainee
U.S. Officials Say He Appeared in Fine Health Until After He Arrived Home
By LUIS MARTINEZ
May 2, 2008

Video footage of a just-released Guantanamo detainee, unable to walk and grimacing in pain as he is loaded off a U.S. military plane in Sudan, didn't sit too well with Pentagon officials who say Sami al-Hajj appeared healthy and good-natured as he boarded the plane to leave Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Sami al-Hajj was returned to the Sudan after more than six years of detention.Broadcast images of his arrival in Sudan showed a weakened al-Hajj returning home after six years of detention at Guantanamo.

The Pentagon sees al-Hajj's weakened appearance as the former detainee's latest effort to influence public opinion.

"He's a manipulator and a propagandist," said one of the three Defense Department officials who spoke to ABC News. One of the officials talked about al-Hajj's "constant drumbeat of allegations" about the treatment of Guantanamo detainees, which had apparently become an irritant to his military handlers. One of the officials said that his credibility was called into question because there was "no information to substantiate his allegations that he was mistreated at Guantanamo."

Just for comparison:

Abuse Found in China Prisons

Manfred Nowak, the U.N. special rapporteur on torture, said Chinese officials had informed him that the nation's highest court would begin handling all new death penalty appeals starting Jan. 1. That long-promised reform is expected to sharply reduce the use of capital punishment in a country that executes more prisoners every year than the rest of the world combined.

Nowak said detainees he interviewed described being subjected to electric shocks and beatings by police officers under pressure to extract confessions, and to a range of punishments that leave no physical bruises and thus may not be illegal under Chinese law. The methods included sleep deprivation and being forced to stand, sit or squat in uncomfortable positions for hours and sometimes days at a time, Nowak said.

LOL, I'd rather be a prisoner in Gitmo than L.A. County Jail. Not to mention Sing Sing or any of the Nazi death camps. This is the kind of silly lie that only morons like Rose O or Keith O would believe.

190 GoatGuy  Tue, May 6, 2008 4:11:55pm

Doesn't this feel like the old brain twister?

Two guards stand in front of two doors, behind which a bomb is set to kill you if you pass through the threshold. One guard always lies, the other always tells the truth. For the twist, you are only allowed one question of one guard. How can you pick the right door?

I bring that forth because I think it is particularly relevant. Insofar as we've seen in the years of observing the hyperbole-of-the-Muslim (Baghdad Bob, "a quick victory is certain" ... while American tanks trundle past him on their way to the center of Baghdad), a consistent "always lies" is at play, culturally. Gitmo feeds its prisoners well enough on culturally 'sensitive' halal food such that they got FAT.

They aren't deprived of significant creature comforts considering they're prisoners. They have imams. They have schedules. They're bored. They aren't impaled on hooks and hung to die like Saddam's "Boys" idea of a well run prison. They aren't herded in rags to pound rocks as they were in Afghanistan, Sudan, Egypt and virtually all other advanced Muslim societies. They weren't summarily executed for lack of patience with their recalcitrance and lying ways. They weren't starved, exposed to the elements, left festering and medically untreated. They weren't cooped up like chickens, in hot-boxes in the sun. They weren't deprived of their Satanic Verses, nor of their amulets and fetishes. Yes, they were interrogated at length, and using means that the Liberals believe were excessive to the degree that would constitute "torture". But really?

So, back to the always-truth, always-lies conundrum. Not only would I say at this point that the Muslim chooses to always lie, but that from that one can also get a reflected image of the actual perpetrator of the very offense impuned on the West. Whose prisons are festering cesspools that effectively carry the 'death penalty by wasting away' for all prisoners? Sudan's, with the Yemeni, Chaddian, Libyan and Syrian not being far behind.

The dumb fvck probably doesn't get it: the very fact that he, the fat tard, was FLOWN back to Sudan alive instead of in a cardboard box of ashes is because that Least Heinous prison medicated, fed, exercised, preached, listened, clothed and housed his sorry arse for 2,340 days. Paid for his capture, incarceration, upkeep, legal proceedings, complaints, and ultimately his release and paid-for deportation back to his homeland. Not much the worse for the wear.

But the answer to the lying guard dilemma is: "Ask either guard what the other guard would say is the safe door to enter." The truth-telling guard would consider that the lying guard would say the opposite of the truth, so he would report that 'opposite truth'. Likewise, the reliable liar would know that the other guard would tell the truth, but would like and tell the opposite of the truth. Therefore both of them would tell the opposite of the truth. One only needs to pick the opposite of THAT, and that is the truth.

Now, if we could just get that through the heads of the MSM and the public. The only problem is, that with the knee-jerk kind of inquisition that goes down as "journalism" these days, we aren't going to get either any journalist, or worse, any editor to insert the double-negative consequence in pieces that would then expose the Liars for whom they are.

GG

Bill Clinton bestowed on his wife Hillary what he perhaps considers the ultimate accolade. She would, he stated gallantly, be an even better president than he was.The would-be First Gentleman’s compliment came at the end of an impassioned 37-minute afternoon speech delivered from the rusting truck, which was parked on waste ground opposite a Rite Aid pharmacy.

Zebulon was the sixth of his nine stops in North Carolina yesterday. He was regaling the crowd of some 250 with an anecdote about his daughter Chelsea, who has also been campaigning vigorously for the former First Lady.

He recounted: “My daughter said the other day in response to a question, ‘Do you think your mother would be a better president than your father?’ She said, ‘Of course I do’. When I called my daughter, I thought she would say, ‘Oh Dad, chill out. You can’t run for anything. She’s on the ballot. What do you expect me to say?’

Yes, Auschwitz was a picnic compared to Gitmo, where average prisoners gain 20lbs and have free access to prayer rugs and Qurans. I wonder how many Christians in Saudi or other muslim jails have access to their Bibles and rosary beads, if they requested them?
I really can't understand the defense department. Why don't they film the prisoners walking away from Gitmo, so when they inevitably make their home turf propaganda, the US would have the dated film of them skipping on the plane back home. Of course the islamists would discount it, but the rest of the world would at least have the potential to accept it.

A simple side by side comparison of him after 6 years in Gitmo versus a Sudanese man his age after 6 years in a Sudanese prison would be a sufficient visual.

re: #180 goddessoftheclassroom

re: #190 GoatGuy

Doesn't this feel like the old brain twister?

GG

That HAS to be the most lucid argument/explanation I've heard in a long time! The journaljism academia should devote an entire semester on this subject. Thank you! P.S. I'm gonna steal it. :>)

7:24 Ed - Fox is saying that they will call the NC race as soon as the polls close

7:26 Ed - IN - 16% of the precincts reporting, Hillary up 234,000 and 14%, but the urban centers haven't really come in yet

7:30 Ed - Fox says that Obama won NC, strong support among voters 45 years old and younger

7:34 Ed - Just looked at CNN's exit poll -- looks like a double-digit loss for HRC in NC

7:36 Ed - Obama wins men 56-40, women 54-42, women are 57% of the vote

7:36 Ed - so maybe 9-10 points for Obama

I think it was the company he was bitching about, his fellow prisoners, being some of the worst scum in human history. This is what our irrational accommodation does. On one hand, our gov. attempts to de-legitimize the jihadist enemy as renegades who have hijacked a peaceful religion, while at the same time accommodating their every Islamic need, from prayer rugs, to Korans, [handled by gloves by our 'dirty kafir' soldiers], to non-pork meals, to pointing to Mecca. Our government is Officially acknowledging that these scumbags are Muslims, which of course they are, but which our government continues to pretend they aren't. If our government cared about what Americans thought as much as they care about what the world thinks....

I am hoping for something like the Berlin wall, but the cultural factor alters any hope for a truly peaceful and bloodless transition of political power... In the case of N.K. the people may very well be too hungry and exhausted to be all that violent. The N.K. military is only marginally better off than the population and will almost certainly have to start and lead any such implosion.

Switzerland Wants to Protect the Rights of Plants

It isn't just the rights of animals that some are promoting. The Weekly Standard reports an ethics panel in Switzerland is expressing concern that the arbitrary killing of plants is morally wrong. The Swiss Federal Ethics Committee on Non-Human Biotechnology says that humans cannot claim "absolute ownership" over plants; that "individual plants have an inherent worth," and that man may not use them as he pleases.

It cites a hypothetical example of a farmer "decapitating" wildflowers as expressing a moral stance toward the organism and possibly doing something bad to the flowers themselves.
One critic of the report says the concept of plant dignity provides what he called "another tool of opponents to argue against any form of plant biotechnology.

SORRY FOR THE OT - but this was TOO GOOD to pass up:

Several big network shows hit low marks in the ratings

NEW YORK - The May "sweeps" is precisely the wrong time to hit low marks in the ratings. But several big shows did last week.

"American Idol" was seen by only 22.8 million people on Wednesday. While still enough to be the second most-watched show of the week (after Tuesday's "American Idol"), that's the smallest audience Fox's superhit has drawn for a regular night in more than two years, according to Nielsen Media Research.

"Idol" traditionally takes a ratings dip before the final shows. This year's competition is down to its final four singers.

CBS' "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" had its second smallest audience ever for an original episode aired in its traditional Thursday time slot, Nielsen said. The previous week was the only one smaller.

The spinoff "CSI: Miami," seen by 13.9 million people on Monday, had the smallest audience in the series' history.

ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" struggled, too. While still a top 10 show with 15.3 million viewers, that was its smallest audience since moving into its Thursday time slot in fall 2006.

NBC wasn't immune, either. The Wednesday edition of "Deal or No Deal" reached its third smallest audience.

Of course they're crap, and that's why I watch! I like to watch, ...

... but about that CSI Miami last night, that seems to have been a script the janitor wrote while the writers were on strike. Anybody else watch that and notice? Sheesh.

I can't stand David Caruso. He is such an overactor.

I would have thought we would have done a physical as they came into Gitmo and another before they left. But it wouldn't matter to Moonbat Int'l. They'll believe anything evil about America. The "Gitmo 20" is just a Zionist re-nutrition program...

And SanFranNan, leader of The Most Ethical Congress...Ever, wants to close down Gitmo, The Worst Prison...Ever. Both of those statements makes me want to hug my gun.

Why the Republicans will probably lose the 2008 election cycle. No platform, lately Republican's elected officials have lost vision of what the Republican party stands for. They are in love with Democrat lite, bigger government, more taxes, more government intrusion. They have lost lost all connection with Newt Gingrich's "contract with America" and middle America. Most Americans have difficulty understanding any difference in domestic policy between the two parties. Only in foreign policy is their any big issue, the WOT and the occupation of Iraq. The Republicans should launch and publicize a comprehensive platform describing how they will approach the near recession, energy independence, education, social security, entitlements, illegal immigrants, etc. We are getting near zero leadership from any of our major parties on any of these important issues. If the Republicans would simply make a stand on issues, and vigorously defend a conservative platform, it would work wonders for the Republican party....

Would we really have accepted Germany broadcasting across the world "their version" of WW2? I think we would call it "Nazi Propaganda" then shut it down.

William L. Shirer reported from the German Side for quite a time while the USA was "Neutral." He stayed as long as he could report with some integrity. When that was over - so was he. Would that current reporters could do the same.

He forgot to tell the story of his medical treatment while at Gitmo.

Al-Hajj was ill and could not figure out why. He went to see a Gitmo doctor.
The doctor told him to pee and poop in a bucket, and, three times a day, stick his head in the bucket and breathe deeply.
After a week of this, he went back to the doctor.
"Doctor," he said, "I feel great! What was wrong with me?"

The doctor replied: "You were homesick."

re: #191 Tigger2005

I remember reading something about Idi Amin's prisons ... where they tortured people in one cell by smashing their legs with hammers ... and made sure the prisoners in the other cells could see the blood and hear the screaming.

I understand they made the prisoners do the ugly work - i.e. Hand a prisoner a ball-pein hammer and tell him to beat his fellow prisoner's brains out. If he refused, he was moved to he front of the line of victims. (Kind of like Stalin's addresses - where the first guy to stop clapping was shot.)

Good old Idi - he was also a member of the ROP. While the historians tell you he was a bloody dictator, they don't tell you his primary victims were Christians. And he lived out his days in which country? Oh, yes, Our Friends, the Saudis.

462 quickjustice  Wed, May 7, 2008 6:01:32am

Hey, three squares a day in sunny Cuba at the expense of Uncle Sam, and the USMC to guard you as you consult with your high-priced ACLU lawyer on strategies to spring you? No wonder he's reacted badly to leaving Club Gitmo!

463 The Dajjal  Wed, May 7, 2008 6:05:53am

And precisely because Gitmo is the worst prison in the world, muslim inmates have to be hog-tied and then dragged kicking and screaming from their cells to the airplane whenever they are transferred to a prison inside an islamic country.

It's all so very clear.

464 obscured by clouds  Wed, May 7, 2008 8:49:38am

465 docremulac  Wed, May 7, 2008 9:33:52am

Close Gitmo, ship these pigs to "good muslim" jails and pay muslim countries to "take care" of them. Make an official statement:

"We are sensitive to the needs of muslims to be taken care of by muslims even when they're incarcerated."

Then make sure you video tape all the Gitmo detainees when you tell them where they're going showing them begging to stay. Also tell them they can thank American liberals and their muslim brothers for their being "freed" from the un-muslim jail and sent to a muslim one.

Now that would be classic video.

Excellent idea, docremulac. In fact, we could simply redecorate Gitmo into a Taliban incarceration facility. Just take away the food, the clothing, health care, the korans, the housing, and the outhouses. Then beat the crap out of them while beheading a few every week.
