UN teacher by day ... Islamists' chief bomb-maker at night

BY DAY, Awad al-Qiq was a respected teacher and headmaster at a United Nations school in the Gaza Strip. By night, he built rockets for Islamic Jihad.

The Israeli air strike that killed the 33-year-old last week also laid bare his apparent double life and embarrassed a UN agency that has long had to reject Israeli accusations that it has aided and abetted guerrillas fighting the Jewish state.

My comment that bears repeating:

Explain to me how we are the party of psychopaths when we say that putting children in failing schools is akin to child abuse and child abuse?

Why are we less tolerant of crime?
Why are we less tolerant of early release for murderers and rapists?
Why are we less tolerant of terrorists and the countries that harbor them?
Why are we less tolerant of genocidal monsters like SAddam?
Why are we less tolerant of sexual behaviors that destroy human lives, infecting millions?
Why are we more protective of human life?

The argument makes no sense.

Also, I completely support Pres. Bush for his decision to invade Iraq. Saddam was creating mass graves with bulldozers out in the desert, rounding up tens of thousands of women and children, busing them to the graves, marching them into the graves, and then slaughtering them. The forensic anthropologist who testified against Saddam said that he uncovered thousands of graves with women holding their murdered children, their little pacifiers and toys clutched in their hands. Some were buried alive.

I am so g-d-m sick of these @sshole liberals who have no problem as bystanders to genocide. They are the corrupt sick b@stards that I hope burn in hell. Sorry, but this topic makes me cry - and furious!

On this day in History May 7th, 1945 Germany surrendered to the allies.

Disclaimer* VE-Day is officially celebrated on the 8th in the States, but on the 9th in most former eastern block countries. The Germans actually surrendered to the Allies on the 7th, but the Russians were not present, and being a bit miffed about it, demanded the surrender ceremony be repeated with appropriate Russian officials present.

From Wikipedia:

At 02:41 on May 7, 1945, at the SHAEF headquarters in Reims, France, the Chief-of-Staff of the German Armed Forces High Command, Colonel General Alfred Jodl, signed the German Instrument of Surrender. All active operations were to cease at 23:01 Central European Time on May 8, 1945. However as the British were operating on British Double Summer Time this was 00:01 May 9 in London.

Western journalists broke the news of surrender prematurely, precipitating the earlier celebration. Fighting continued on the Eastern Front until the Germans surrendered specifically to the Soviets at Karlshorst. The Soviet Union kept to the agreed celebration date, and Russia and other countries still commemorate the end of World War II, a significant part of which is known as the Great Patriotic War in Russia and other parts of the former Soviet Union, as Victory Day on May 9.

By May 8, most of Germany had already been taken by Allied forces. Hence V-E day was not such a drastic change for most German civilians. In the years after, V-E day was predominantly perceived as the day of defeat. But over the decades, this perception changed, culminating in the speech by West German President Richard von Weizsäcker on the 40th anniversary of V-E day in 1985, in which he called May 8 "the day of liberation" from the Nazi government.

Surrender in Berlin - Shortly before midnight on May 8, a second unconditional surrender was signed in the outskirts of Berlin, Germany. The signing ceremony took place in a villa in an eastern suburb of Berlin called Karlshorst. Representatives of the USSR, Great Britain, France, and the United States arrived shortly before midnight. After Soviet Field Marshal Georgy Zhukov opened the ceremony, the German command representatives headed by General Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel were invited into the room, where they signed the final German Instrument of Surrender entering into force at 23:01 Central European Time.

By the 9th, all the allies had heard the news of the unconditional surrender of Germany, and on that day, the photo I just put up as my avatar was taken.

So happy VE-Day Lizards, and a special happy VE-Day to my Dad. (he's in the photo) Tonight, I raise my Bass Ale in your honor for all you did for me, and all you did to defend liberty in this world.

I love you, I miss you, and I thank you. Happy VE-Day Dad...., Cheers.

"Blue Skies"
by Irving Berlin

I was blue, just as blue as I could be
Ev'ry day was a cloudy day for me
Then good luck came a-knocking at my door
Skies were gray but they're not gray anymore

Blue skies
Smiling at me
Nothing but blue skies
Do I see

Bluebirds
Singing a song
Nothing but bluebirds
All day long

Never saw the sun shining so bright
Never saw things going so right
Noticing the days hurrying by
When you're in love, my how they fly

Blue days
All of them gone
Nothing but blue skies
>From now on

[2]
I should care if the wind blows east or west
I should fret if the worst looks like the best
I should mind if they say it can't be true
I should smile, that's exactly what I do

So you had a dad in the war?

My dad was in the 42nd
I don't recall the regiment, but it was Easy company and he was a first machine gunner. H always wondered why he was chosen as he was 5'-3" and the smallest guy in the company. To compensate the captain assigned the bigest guy around to be his second gunner, and tote the tripod and ammo in addition to his own rifle and gear. My dad landed in marseille in november of 44, as the 42nd was rushed over as replacements since the casualties were so high. He fought on the german border during the bulge, at the southern end of the penetration by the germans. On January 3 1945, while being relieved to go back from the front and get the first hot meal in 2 weeks his squad came under attack by german mortars. A shell exploded only a few feet behind him and he was hurled into the air, and landed flat on the seat of his pants. His back was broken at the 3rd coxical (sic) vertebra and he was temporarily paralyzed. He regained the use of his legs after 6 months of therapy, and pulled shrapnel out of his skin for the next 20 years. He never considered himself a hero. Dad Died in 1983 from heart disease and few days go by that I don't think about him.

He had PTSD I'm sure (back before that was cool, natch) He told once though that what really scared him was tanks and hand grenades. Tanks cuz they drew fire, and he said as a machine gunner he had all the fire directed at him that he needed, thanks very much. Hand grenades because his second was a baseball fan, and loved to throw them overhand like a fast ball and dad just knew one of those days he was gonna drop one in the fox hole and there wouldn't be time to get out of the way.

May 7, 2008: The U.S. Marine Corps has had more success than expected in attracting recruits, and has moved up the date for completing their current expansion. Last year, Congress ordered the marines to expand their strength from the current 181,000 to 202,000. At first, the marines thought it would take them four years to do it. But between the large number of recruits, and the many current marines who are staying in, the expansion will be accomplished by next year.

Ex-Gitmo prisoner carries out suicide attack

The U.S. military confirmed Wednesday that a former Guantanamo detainee from Kuwait carried out a recent suicide attack in northern Iraq.

A spokesman for U.S. military's Central Command told The Associated Press that Abdallah Salih al-Ajmi took part in an attack in Mosul.

The U.S. transferred al-Ajmi to Kuwaiti custody from Guantanamo in 2005. A Kuwaiti court later acquitted him of terrorism charges.

Does anybody else have annual Spring storm-drain ducky rescues by the fire department?

107 Boogberg  Wed, May 7, 2008 5:32:22pm

Hi Folks. What do Lizards think of the Credit Cardholder's Bill of Rights Act of 2008?

I like this part:

`(1) IN GENERAL- Except as permitted under paragraph (2), if the outstanding balance on a credit card account under an open end consumer credit plan accrues interest at 2 or more different annual percentage rates, the total amount of each periodic payment made on such account shall be allocated by the creditor between or among the outstanding balances at each such annual percentage rate in the same proportion as each such balance bears to the total outstanding balance on the account.

`(2) ALLOCATION TO HIGHER RATE- Notwithstanding paragraph (1), a creditor may elect, in any case described in such paragraph, to allocate more than a pro rata share of any payment to a portion of the outstanding balance that bears a higher annual percentage rate than another portion of such outstanding balance.'.

This, in my opinion, is where credit card companies are the most deceptive in that they hide shit the above addresses (applying your payment to the lowest interest rate shit first) in the (incredibly) fine print. We're not all ace consumers (my beloved Mom included).

I hope I haven't bored all of you. You guys are tops.

I have to agree, GoTC! I have had many so-so teachers, a few truly horrible ones, and several who were so outstanding that after, uh, well, uh, a few, ahem, years...I still remember them with admiration and fondness.

Many years from now your students will be telling their grandkids about the amazing lady who taught them back in the day.... That, dear, is your legacy...and your due.

/bows with respect in GoTC's general direction....

It's always a good day when I get to read stories from my aunt's 5th grade class. This story is called Terrik.

Terrik
Once there was a triceratops and he had lots of friends but the T-rex was his enemy growing up some of his friends died because of T-rex. Terrik wanted to get revenge but he was a herbavore. T-rex was a big bully but Terrik stayed out of fights but T-rex kept tourmenting Terrik. So Terrik fought T-rex. T-rex bit him. Terrik tried but T-rex was to good for him. Terrik tried to run away but he couldn't so Terrik was injured and he later died.

NZ has some of the finest scenery on the planet! They have a tough immigration policy though.....

Here's a strange, as Paul Harvey would say.... we arrived at the Auckland airport after about 30 hours of traveling. It was about 5:30 AM local time, and we were so tired we didn't know which end was up....

Going through NZ Customs, we were asked, among MANY other things, if we had been on a farm recently... Well, yeah, we OWN a farm. Ah Ha! This is cause for great concern in NZ, so they confiscated Grandpa Cracker's boots and took them to an on-site, sort of haz-mat, unit for DECONTAMINATION! They take their small, closed ecosystem VERY seriously! After about 1 hour, his boots were returned and we were allowed to leave.

When the time difference allowed (they're 17 hours ahead of us...plus one day!) I called the friends who were meeting us there and told them to wash their damn boots before coming unless they really were looking forward to spending half the night in the damn airport!

Happy Wednesday. Anyone have any GOOD news today?

Well, that is better than Hillary (100% moonbat) and Obama (1000% moonbat).

Now I have to watch it at work; I almost blew up at a moonbat who supports Obama and didn't think the "G-d damn America" sermons were so bad.
And in a small company, it isn't a good idea to piss off co-workers.
At least, I'm reasonably sure our HR person is NOT a moonbat, so I might not get in trouble. (He was talking to me about how bad government health care would be, and some other stuff that I can't think of now)

I'm guessing these are high altitude cirrus clouds ... so high they are made of wee bits of ice.

A long time ago, when I was stupid, childless and daring, I loved to sky dive, but from no more than 10,000 feet. Never saw ice. So these must be at 15,000 to 20,000 feet.

Isn't nature amazing?

Well, I managed to photoblog a portion of the Sean Bell demonstrations. Nothing too earth shattering there - there were more media, police, and gawkers than demonstrators by a significant margin. While I was viewing the scene, no arrests and no attempts to block traffic.

That came later when I was not around and the gaggle of demonstrators worked their way further downtown.

Teachers like you helped instill in me a life-long love of learning, and the English language. Would that all of my teachers had been like you, and not just in the the fifth and sixth grades.

I am passing my love onto The Kid. I (gently) correct him when he uses an adjective/adverb incorrectly, and we have word games to play when driving. Also, he's invented his own number games and has taught himself how to multiply--and divide--up to 15X15.

I'm no monster, says dungeon father in attack on 'biased' media

The Austrian pensioner who has admitted locking his daughter in a dungeon for 24 years and fathering seven children with her broke his silence from his prison cell yesterday to protest against being "treated like a monster" by the media.

"I'm not a monster," Josef Fritzl, 73, told the German newspaper Bild, via his lawyer, Rudolf Mayer.

He condemned as "totally biased" media coverage of what Austrian authorities have referred to as "the worst such crime in history", adding that his treatment of his 42-year-old daughter Elisabeth and her children could have been worse. Three of the children were brought up by her in their windowless dungeon, while three grew up in the family house with Fritzl and his wife. The seventh died.

Fritzl, who has been in custody in the town of St Pölten since his arrest nearly two weeks ago, sharing a 12-square-metre cell with a man accused of gun crime, said he deserved credit for the mercy he had shown towards his 19-year-old daughter by Elisabeth, Kerstin. He claimed he had saved her life by taking her from the cellar to hospital. "Without me, Kerstin would not still be alive today," he said. "I made sure she got to hospital."

Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10

On a clear night in late June 2005, four U.S. Navy SEALs left their base in northern Afghanistan for the mountainous Pakistani border. Their mission was to capture or kill a notorious al Qaeda leader known to be ensconced in a Taliban stronghold surrounded by a small but heavily armed force. Less then twenty-four hours later, only one of those Navy SEALs remained alive.

This is the story of fire team leader Marcus Luttrell, the sole survivor of Operation Redwing, and the desperate battle in the mountains that led, ultimately, to the largest loss of life in Navy SEAL history. But it is also, more than anything, the story of his teammates, who fought ferociously beside him until he was the last one left-blasted unconscious by a rocket grenade, blown over a cliff, but still armed and still breathing. Over the next four days, badly injured and presumed dead, Luttrell fought off six al Qaeda assassins who were sent to finish him, then crawled for seven miles through the mountains before he was taken in by a Pashtun tribe, who risked everything to protect him from the encircling Taliban killers.

It's something that must be defended, at a cultural level. In most of Western Europe, the idea of "war heroes" is simply a punch line. There are forces pushing us in that direction; they have to be resisted.

Drudge is so biased against Hillary. If I were working on Hillary's campaign, I'd be livid about the montage of Hillary faces with the caption, "NO WAY," underneath.

RIP, CourtTV! It was so good back in its heyday. When Catharine Crier left, and then when Nancy Grace left, they lost their sense. It's now "All defense, all the time". SPIT!

But they're now owned by CNN, so what can we expect?

I watch trials now online, as they're available. The Mark Jensen trial was carried by WISN, and I caught it there. He got LWOP, and I was so glad.

Okay, this has nothing to do with clouds but my husband just found out today that one of his rarely used credit cards recently purchased a plane ticket on Turkish Airlines, 600+ dollars worth of something from Gateway Computers and 500+ dollars worth of something from Dell Computers. Various other odd charges were made including a membership with Columbia House dvd club.

How annoying.

Just wanted to vent a little.

Something similar happened to my wife and I a couple years ago. Before leaving on a vacation, we went to an ATM to get some walkin' around money, and found that there was a hold on our account. Long story short: we called the bank and found out that their computers had detected an "unusual spending pattern" in out account and locked it down. Turns out one or more persons in Turkey had been making cash withdrawls for 2 or 3 days.

The bank credited the money back into the account immediately, and we had to fill out some forms when we returned from the vacation.

New at zombietime:

Palestinian Checkpoint on the U.C. Berkeley Campus
Berkeley, May 7, 2008

This was the event I was planning to cover yesterday when I stumbled across the Ben Stein creationist. Turns out it was postponed until today (as a commenter on zomblog revealed).

To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the "Nakba" (Arabic for "Catastrophe," the Palestinian name for the founding of Israel in May of 1948), the U.C. Berkeley group "Students for Justice in Palestine" (SJP) set up a mock "security checkpoint" at Sather Gate on the U.C. campus, on May 7, 2008.

The purpose of the checkpoint was, in theory, to give otherwise blasé Berkeley students a taste of so-called "Israeli oppression" -- to force them to experience waiting in line at an Israeli-manned checkpoint in the West Bank.

The last time SJP tried a similar stunt (in 2004), they originally tried to force everyone passing through Sather Gate to go through the mock oppression, but this time around they were told to stay off to the side and let traffic pass by normally. As a consequence, this year's demonstration was more like a bit of street theater on the periphery of the plaza, and didn't have the same disruptive effect. Members of SJP, portraying Palestinians trying to enter Israel or pass through a security checkpoint, sat on the ground in a line, watched over by mock Israeli soldiers with guns.

Guns, did you say? Yes, guns.

Well, they looked like real guns at first. But upon closer inspection, they were toy guns, with orange caps on the end to indicate they were pretend, not actual functioning weapons.

Here, three Palestinian students apparently portraying Israelis watch over some "prisoners" they'd taken aside for questioning.

It seems no one in SJP questioned the wisdom of having young Middle Eastern men running around campus with realistic toy machine guns, especially considering how jumpy everyone is after so many recent school shootings and similar terrifying incidents

.

I would really love to know, what the minimum SAT score is students from Gaza.

Better yet, since Carter feels Hamas serves their constituency, do they provide help for completing the FAFSA?

Do they take achevement tests in advanced bombmaking, Holocaust denial, and blaming the Jooos?

re: #350 zombie

I didn't see any of the Jewish students doing that (and there were at least 40 or 50 watching from the sidelines).

The problem with that is that the politically correct authorities can then prosecute the mock bomber for making terroristic threats.

re: #336 Opilio

Something similar happened to my wife and I a couple years ago. Before leaving on a vacation, we went to an ATM to get some walkin' around money, and found that there was a hold on our account. Long story short: we called the bank and found out that their computers had detected an "unusual spending pattern" in out account and locked it down. Turns out one or more persons in Turkey had been making cash withdrawls for 2 or 3 days.

The bank credited the money back into the account immediately, and we had to fill out some forms when we returned from the vacation.

This is the first time this has happened to us. I guess they get away with it somehow, but I wonder if they hadn't done the plane ticket first if we would have been contacted about the rest of the stuff. The CC companies always contact us for things that are charged out of the country.

Oh well. It's the automated age. *sigh*

I've had gas station charges from the UK, and airline tickets from Colombia, show up on my Amex bill. The former was chickenfeed, the latter was over a thousand bucks

I will say, Amex is pretty good about it. You dispute it, they take it off.

You know, when you really think about it, it is astounding.

You just know there are so many families with kids trying to get into that school truly for a chance at a college education.

Folks who go to work day in and day out, pay taxes, etc.

Their kids are turned down.

I have no vested interest in this information AT ALL, except that both my husband and I have been victimized by this type of thief....

Buy LifeLock! It costs $100 per person, per year, but...if it saves you the hassle , embarrassment and expense of identity theft just once, it's worth it!

366 Grammy Cracker  Wed, May 7, 2008 7:37:36pm

Well, Lizards.... I've been up since 5:30 a.m. EST, a LONG time for Grammy! I'll be headed off to bed now. Be kind to one another!

/see you on the morning threads!

"A Florida teacher may have to pull an unemployment check out of his hat after performing magic in front of students, according to reports.

Jim Piculas said he made a toothpick disappear and reappear in front of students at the Rushe Middle School in Land 'O Lakes, Fla., Local6.com reported. He said he later got a call from the supervisor of teachers, saying he had been accused of wizardry.

"I get a call the middle of the day from head of supervisor of substitute teachers. He says, 'Jim, we have a huge issue. You can't take any more assignments. You need to come in right away,'" he told Local6.com.

Piculas said he’s concerned the incident may prevent him from being considered for future jobs."

I wonder what they would have done to the sub if he were teaching the kid's how to make bombs...

Well that was for all those Columbian chickens you bought for your farm in Scotland, right? ;D

As far as we know we aren't going to be charged for any of it. I'd like to know how they got the info, of course. My MIL had a similar situation and was able to find out which mail order company had been employing a thief.

But this card really is rarely used so it seems like it might have been someone inside the CC company. Creepy. :(

Unlikely, but not impossible.

About "Lifelock". I'd recommend against it only because of the expense. I don't think they do anything that you can't do for yourself. I think it's a big scam. I've got half a dozen credit cards but I've never had a charge I couldn't track down. Of course, if you don't do your own finances... :D

Wow WT! Thanks for the reminder! It's not like the news media or my daughter's school is going to mention it or anything.

I second the thanks. To all the warriors. And that includes you, Charles!

Obviously I'm late to this thread - sorry.

There's another venue where Muslims are persecuting Christians and have been doing so for decades.

Sudan.

The radical Islamic government, based in Khartoum, has been engaged in a civil war for years. Attacking civilian targets with Soviet Hind gunships. Sponsoring Janjaweed raids on villages, where women and girls are captured and sold into slavery - the men and boys are slaughtered on the spot.

While Darfur has somehow become painted as a moonbat cause-celeb, the suffering in all of Sudan - not just the Darfur region - is very real.

For whatever reason, the world doesn't seem to give a damn about Sudan. I have high hopes that Lizards will.

I'm personally working on supporting one Christian minister who - under a death threat from the fundamentalist Islamic government - is working to help the Sudanese people set up large-scale farming operations so they can feed themselves.

If you're interested, see: Cal Bombay Ministries

These are literally some of the most oppressed and helpless people on the face of the earth.

I encourage you to read up on the topic of Sudan. Search for articles by the Calgary Sun and Baltimore Sun. Both sent reporters on missions, and both verified that the suffering is real. And your donations are used exactly as promised.

What say you, Lizards? The "Religion of Peace" certainly doesn't give a damn about the Sudanese people. Can you?

re: #15 DistantThunder

Enablers are Monsters, too - new bumpersticker.

"Global warming is a cirrus problem!"
--Al Gore

The Goracle is the Prophet of Idiocy for the Church of Global Warming Climate Change.

Note to the faithful: Climate change is now the preferred term. This way, no matter what happens--warming or cooling--our bases are covered. However, we've got a little problem with stasis, so whenever someone points out that global warming stopped in 1998 and the temperature has been steady since, simply attack them and accuse them of wanting to drown our children and accuse their scientists being oil company hacks.
