Tech Note: Uploading Personal Icons

Wed, May 7, 2008 at 7:02:02 pm PDT

From a glance at the PHP error logs I can see that more than a few registered lizards are having trouble uploading an image for their personal icon. The most common causes are:

* Trying to upload an image that’s too large. We don’t have unlimited storage space for images, so I’ve limited the size of uploaded files to 32K (it used to be 16K but I just doubled it). The image file you upload must be less than or equal to 32,768 bytes in size, or it will not work. This is by far the most common cause of problems, so check the file size before uploading.

* Trying to upload an image that’s not in one of three accepted formats: JPEG, GIF, or PNG. BMP files will not work. TIFF files will not work. JPEG, GIF, or PNG, please. This isn’t Flickr.

Here’s a very good online image editing site that can help you massage your personal icons into shape for uploading to LGF: Picnik - edit photos the easy way, online in your browser.

I also find Adobe's Photoshop and Apple's "Preview" good for impriving the look of images! And "GraphicConverter" is a snap for reducing big images to small, manageable ones.

Onesies - the no First! first rule...

I didn't any reference to "first"ness. I just said something like, "But what do you do if you're already an icon?", making a joke about computer/avatar icons, and the other definition of "icon" -- someone who is famous -- which is how I've occasionally been perceived recently. (The downside of semi-success.) I guess it just left a sour note.

I don't actually think of myself as an icon! I would much rather be completely invisible, but human society always seems to focus on the messenger more than the message.

Not to overly geeky, but color count. A picture with few color can be larger in x - y and still be under 32k where one with many colors will be smaller in the x -y.

The crazy thing is, at least five times in the past, other sections of Fox News HAVE paid me for my photos and video -- Brit Hume, O'Reilly Factor, the evening news broadcast, etc. -- and now out of the blue a different producer wants it for free. Crazy. Apparently the Fox organization is so huge that one department doesn't necessarily know what any other department has done.

This producer found me of her own accord, completely unaware that I was already a "regular" contributor.

More debris put in the sky by nature than by man.

More oil leaks into the ocean by nature than by man.

There are more trees now in North America than when we got here.

If you gave every man woman and child on the planet 8 square feet to stand on, they would cover an area a little smaller than Rhode Island.

Every man woman and child who ever lived would fit in a small area of the Grand Canyon.

We have the power to mess some stuff up; but don't eff with Mother Nature.

You van resize and save as in Preview.
Save as, then adjust with slider for size in KB.
If it won't come down to 32K as a Jpeg then
Tools/ Adjust size. Use the percent parameter if you aren't comfy with pixels or inches.
Then do the save as with a new name.

I can't wait to see it.

So far, from a global perspective, this is not a major eruption. It's injected an estimated 5000 tons of SO2 into the stratosphere. By contrast, in 1991 Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines spewed around 17,000,000 tons of SO2, leading to a temporary global temperature drop of nearly 1° F.

Big volcano is ripping us off!
