Earlier this year, Iran's former top nuclear negotiator Hassan Rowhani complained that superstition was growing in the country and that people were even putting out food for the Mahdi in case he returned that very night.

Ahmadinejad also raised eyebrows when he said he felt surrounded by a mystical aura when he gave his first speech to the UN General Assembly in New York in 2005.

Similarly, in his latest speech, Ahmadinejad said the Mahdi had guided his "victory" in his famous talk to jeering students at Columbia University in New York last year where he was greeted as a "a petty and cruel dictator".

"I recalled the imam and I said to him 'help so that this scene is to the benefit of Islam'," he said.

“This line was initiated in accordance to the general policies of the Islamic Republic of Iran for supporting and expanding non-oil exports and in response to the numerous requests made by merchants,” he explained, Mehr reported.

I think it helps to unplug the TVs as the instant on feature sucks energy 24/7. At least my electric bill went down. I'm sure water heaters use much more, but here in Fla. the tank isn't cooling down that much sitting around. Wondering how the $120+ barrel of oil cost will be reflected in what FPL charges. We really need to build nuclear plants. Greens say no, but even the French embrace nukes wholeheartedly.

95 Mich-again  Thu, May 8, 2008 4:11:11am

The dummy is a glutton for punishment. Dan Rather resubmits lawsuit against CBS.

Rather said the reason he is going through the legal proceedings is to find out what happened in the wake of the 2004 "60 Minutes II" report on President Bush's military service during the Vietnam War.

"The story was true. What we said in the report was true, despite what others have tried to have you believe about the documents, which were one, and only one, part of the story," Rather said.

If he really believes those words coming out of his mouth then he is truly and profoundly ignorant. My gosh.

If you have a chance to install tankless hot water do. That is what we have and I can't say enough good things about it. Really hot water, instantly, we never run out and we waste no energy keeping it warm.

The good news is that in all of the states electricity is a public utility. They cannot just raise rates and are not guaranteed a profit. It usually takes at least a year for them to get a rate increase and in some states they are only allowed a rate increase every so often.

We're trying to find a way to heat the house without oil, not an easy task since there really is no place for a wood stove.

Good Morning Lucius. Sorry about that. My ancestors have been doing their bit for a just society for several hundred years now - and that includes my Southern white mother who peeled onions every morning at 4 am to pay for her education so that the family could pay for the black maid's daughter to go to college on the grounds that if they didn't help then the maid's daughter would have no opportunity. I feel absolutely NO guilt and absolutely NO compunction to any self criticism.

105 storagemanager  Thu, May 8, 2008 4:19:25am

TEHRAN (Reuters) - A group of hardline lawmakers plans to complain to the Intelligence Ministry about comments by moderate former President Mohammad Khatami deemed insulting to Iran's revolutionary leader, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The daily Etemad-e Melli said 77 lawmakers would ask Intelligence Minister Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei "to confront" Khatami for the remarks they say insulted the late founder of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

The newspaper did not say when the formal complaint would be lodged and did not give further details.

The row reflects a political divide between those in Iran, like President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, seeking a return to hardline policies of the early revolutionary days and pro-reform figures, like Khatami, who seek political and social change.

In a speech on Friday, Khatami questioned the meaning of "exporting the revolution," a phrase coined when Khomeini led the country as supreme leader. Khomeini, who died in 1989, remains a figure much revered by all political factions.

Nearby Gulf Arab states and others took fright at the phrase at the time, seeing it as a bid by Iran to stoke revolt in their countries. Khatami's presidency was characterized by a bid to improve Iran's relations with Arabs and the West.

I feel absolutely NO guilt and absolutely NO compunction to any self criticism.

And you have no reason to feel guilty. The logic they employ is Stalinist -- that or the sort of thing you encounter in cults.

Ever notice how progressivism so often ends up progressing to the rear?

That's because of its origins in socialism and populism. The various "worker's" struggles have always been reactionary -- reactions against the material progress of capitalism and the moral/political progress of human freedom." They want an orderly society, one where we each serve our proper "function," but that should be determined for us by our betters. In that regard progressivism/socialism always presumes, explicitly or otherwise, of a political elite who determines what we are to do. Their ideal is this romanticized pre-industrial idyll where we all live in little communities under the beneficent leadership of virtuous aristocrats. But the fantasy is driven be fear of the disorder that comes with freedom and with the disruptive effects of the herd getting more money.

Historically speaking, economic growth is essential for the political emancipation of the masses; containing or stopping growth is key for the elite to maintain its power. This is why the biggest industrialists are actually socialists -- "big business" loves "big government" and always has, because if they can use the power of the state to crush the competition, they never have to worry about the servile labor force finding any employment other than what they provide.

Thus understood, "progress" leads not to the promised utopia, Lenin's paradise of commodities," but to serfdom. Hayek had it right.

Here in VT our water/sewer runs about $60 a month or so. I don't water the lawn at all and water the vegetable garden only when things get really dry - rare in New England.

We get around the super high phone rates here in VT (the phone companies are allowed to charge for local service greater than 200 minutes a month by the minute) by paying for a bare line and using Vonage instead. Since almost everyone we know is long distance, we save a huge bundle.

ST. ANTHONY, Idaho — A suspected illegal immigrant has been charged with raping a 10-year-old girl who later gave birth in eastern Idaho.

The girl gave birth less than two weeks ago by caesarian section at Madison Memorial Hospital in Rexburg, Fremont County Sheriff Ralph C. Davis and other authorities said. Officials would not disclose the gender, date of birth or paternity of the baby.

"I wouldn't have believed a 10-year-old could conceive in the first place," Davis said.

A hospital spokeswoman would not discuss the condition of the girl or the baby and would not say whether either was still in the hospital Wednesday.

But seriously, either we don't drill in ANWR and the polar bears drown when the ice melts, or we do drill and drive them off their habitat to their extinction. So what's it gonna be, greenies?

I say we just switch them for the seals and get drill-happy.

TEHRAN – The Islamic Republic of Iran’s Shipping Lines (IRISL) plans to initiate a weekly shipping line to Venezuelan and Cuban ports, the IRISL Europe line department Manager, Saeed Meghdadi said here on Wednesday.

That's Okay. I'll see your IRISL and raise you the United States Navy Fourth Fleet.

Top Navy admirals will recommend that the secretaries of defense and the Navy reactivate the Fourth Fleet and have its headquarters at Naval Station Mayport, U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., said Friday [Story from January 2008 --hd].

The Fourth Fleet, which was deactivated in the 1950s, would operate in waters off Latin America and the Caribbean. It would be commanded by a three-star admiral, who would report to Stavridis, and direct ships assigned to it as needed.

Nelson said several factors have prompted admirals to conclude Latin American and Caribbean waters require a fleet dedicated to them: the rising economic strength of Brazil, the belligerence of Venezuela, the increasing trade moving through the Panama Canal, and Cuban leader Fidel Castro's age.

The story I linked to is from January, but I think that Fourth Fleet has just been re-established, which was only a proposal at the time the story was written.
I was a part of Operation Praying Mantis in 1988, in which we sank half of Iran's navy. Just let these madmen try their tricks anywhere beyond the Straits of Hormuz, and they'll find out what "blue water" means.

I'm wrapping up my classes tonight, and I'll finally be able to sleep again... whoowa. Once the course wraps up, I can go ahead and take my CENA certification exams.

I've been learning to use the hoyer lift this week which is unnerving enough.... I've had to learn it, by using it to lift and transfer a very challenging patient - a lady completely disabled by MS and a closed head injury. I'm with her for four hours per day (takes that long to bathe her, dress her, transfer her at least 3 times with the hoyer.. she spends the entire session crying and telling me to f*ck off).

I have a sore back today, and I'm cranky.
But I'm here, and I have until 8:30 to eat my bagel and catch up.... anything interesting happen overnight?

The Darul Uloom Deoband Islamic seminary reacted strongly to a proposal by the All-India Muslim Women’s Personal Law Board to set up separate mosques.

According to the daily, The Asian Age, the deputy in-charge of the edict department of the seminary, Mufti Ehsan Qasmi, told reporters in Deoband that Islam did not permit Muslim women to act as imams in mosques.

Maulana Naim-ur-Rahman Siddiqui, a scholar at the Nadwa Islamic seminary in the northern Indian city of Lucknow, has said that issues such as woman-led prayers and new women-only mosques were being borrowed from western countries.

Siddiqui argues that attempts were being made to distract attention from more pressing issues.

"Our Muslim sisters should rather be preoccupied with educating the young generation about their religion and protecting them from moral aberration," he said.

Earlier this week the board president, Shaista Amber had said: "The time has come for ulemas and Muslim leaders to set up separate mosques for women in every city so that women in the community can also offer namaz and attend religious congregations."

Sports Nerd Corner:

Looks like the New England Pats have more to worry about.

Ex-Pats employee Walsh sends NFL video of Pats' taping

After brokering a deal to protect himself, former New England Patriots employee Matt Walsh has finally turned over his evidence in the videotaping controversy.

The New York Times reported and the NFL confirmed on Wednesday that Walsh sent eight tapes to the league that show the Patriots recording the play-calling signals of five opponents in six games between 2000 and 2002.

Taping the signals of opposing teams is prohibited by league rules, and the Patriots were already fined $750,000 and docked a first-round draft choice in September for taping the New York Jets. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell left open the possibility that more penalties could be levied.

On the one hand, I think this is much ado about nothing. If you pay close attention to how teams line up and who they have on the field at the moment, and if you have some basic knowledge of offensive and defensive football strategy, you can tell over the TV what is coming most of the time.

For example, for years the Chicago Bears have had a "pass catching" tight end and a "run blocking" tight end. So, if you just pay attention to which tight end is in the game, you pretty mcuh know if the next play will be a run or pass (which by the way, is why the Bears are always very unsuccessful with play-action, the other team knows what's coming.). Then if you pay a little attention to down and distance tendancies, you can dial in pretty fast to what specifically the next play is likely to be and which specific player will be the primary receiver/carrier.

Another example is reading defensive sets. Last year for some reason, the Washington Redskins telegraphed on every defensive set whether they were blitzing or not by how the defensive line set up. If they lined up in the gaps between the offensive line, it was a 2 deep zone and no blitz. If they lined up man-on man, it was a man defense with blitzing up the gaps.

Every time.

It took me only 3 series of the first Redskins game last year for me to read that, and I'm not a professional coach. If I could do that, I have to figure most of the rest of the league read that too (McNabb by the way was amazingly unable to ever pick up on that read.). For the rest of the season I could call every defensive set the Redskins ran before the snap from my couch. So, taping the other teams signals is of very limited value in my mind.

However, it is still against the rules. The Pat's coaches know that, and so they deserve whatever the league ands down in further punishment. I'm not naive enough to think the Pat's are the only ones who taped other teams, but they got caught.

I see some more fines and some more draft picks next year forfeited for the Pats.

Good morning, people.

Isn't (or wasn't) the idea of the CONVENTION to choose the party's candidate? Isn't that how it used to be done?

If so, why then do all the pundits call for Hillary to drop out before the convention?

Isn't one way of looking at this debacle to see Hillary's "grit" and "spunk" as recommendations FOR her being president? No one can claim she's weak because she's a woman.

I think one reason the party and pundits want her to give up is because they THINK then she'll stop attacking and exposing Obama. I think they're dreaming on that one.

If (when) Obama is named candidate, the best thing that could happen for Hillary is for him to lose and the Republican be elected president. Then in 4 years she can say, "See? You made a mistake last time. So nominate me NOW."

Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said on Thursday that presence of US troops in the Persian Gulf region and Iraq is the root-cause of rampant 'insecurity and instability' in the region.
Addressing thousands of enthusiastic people in the city of Lar in Fars province, the Supreme Leader said the great Iranian people with reliance on Islam have got united and are determined to defend their dignity and identity.

"Islam has brought us freedom, independence, dignity, public welfare and all-out development and this nation is determined to attain its lofty goals," Ayatollah Khamenei said.

Iran has established friendly and brotherly ties with its neighboring Arab states as well as other regional states and this is a source of concern for the US and the Zionist regime, underlined the Supreme Leader.

Ayatollah Khamenei also urged all Muslims to forge unity to thwart plots hatched by the enemies.

Islamic Iran and its great nation are united and are to bring their rough enemies to their knees, said Ayatollah Khamenei.

Existing brotherly ties between Shias and Sunni in Larestan is a good example of unity among Muslims, pointed out the Supreme Leader.

"Unity is the key which thwarts all plots hatched by the global arrogance," Ayatollah Khamenei said.

Since the US has been bugged down in Iraq they try to put the blames on others, pointed out the Supreme Leader

Just got back, one of the hardest parts of being a father/husband is seeing the violence towards women/children in this country and throughout the world an immediately processing it the way we did. Although the chances are it won't happen to your family, the angst is still there.

The idea that a dad will turn psycho if his family is threatened has protected countless women and children from harm.

Yesterday I watched Destination Tokyo, 1943 propaganda film with Cary Grant. There are places where it seems embarassingly obvious, but mostly, it's really pretty good as action-drama.

I was struck by how some of the things the sub crew were saying about the imperial Japanese (lack of respect for and abuse of their women, training little boys to be killers) would fit perfectly describing today's enemy.

No, we don't say those things today. BUT, Destination Tokyo was made in 1943 AFTER Pearl Harbor and after Doolittle's air raid on Tokyo, which itself was as much propaganda as war.

Other similarities between imperial Japan and islam are the suicide attacks, of course, and official lying about intentions and positions. Highly recommended overall: Tora Tora Tora. Very good action sequences -- just skip the first 90 minutes of puke-worthy "love" story: Pearl Harbor.

Yes sir, you've got that right. But, in likeness, Bill may be old and declining from power; Barack is rising in power. Both demagogues.
The young, articulate, calm, charismatic, persuasive Senator from Illinois can sway political policy unwisely.
Our legislatures' and some Presidents (since LBJ ) have lead us by fits and starts down a road, they believed, lead to grandeur. What they have, unashamedly and unapologetically, created is a broken systems of governance, education, currency management and health care.
What this throughly charming gentleman from the great state of Illinois can add to that, I dread we will find out.
Will a 72 yr. old war horse with a begrudging base loyalty be able the withstand, and overcome the political firestorm which is coming in the fall? I'll do my little part although the party is old and tired and has no fight. They would be well served to sincerely listen to the Newt Gingrich's of the world.
Will they.

Safety in numbers for speeding drivers

BEIJING (Reuters) - Speeding drivers in south China are getting clear away thanks to machines which switch the numbers on their licence plates in seconds, state media said on Tuesday.

"More than 50 percent of cars caught on camera for speeding and other offences either cover up their plates or use a fake licence plate," a traffic policeman in the Guangdong city of Yangjiang was quoted by the Beijing Youth Daily as saying.

"Our chances of capturing them is next to nil."

The price of the remote-control device starts at around 800 yuan ($115), while a more advanced apparatus with the ability to flip over the numbers in less than three seconds costs more than double.

Good Morning All.....from the BBC Muslim board

The actual process is quite hard.It cannot be performed by the week hearted. Many of the Jinns after the exorcism also turn Muslim and become good.
A Jinn never gets into a person. It only influences you.I used to always think it goes inside of you when I was younger but it only influences you. Also the Jinns do live in the trees. If a person was to urinate on a tree then as that person has urinated on the Jinns home then they usually get you.Even when you just talk about Jinns then they start to surround you.Just like when you do Zikr of Allah then angels surround you.
The process itself is not something to explain but it can be found on many Islamic websites. It is mainly to do with Quranic ayats and Ayatal Kursi and other things. It is also good for the person performing the exorcism to speak Arabic as most of the Jinn will also speak in Arabic.

I honestly do not think they realize that he is unelectable. They see "huge numbers" of new voters and think "Wow, no way we can loose" but fail to realize that they are in the states the Democrats would already carry and secondly most of Obama's support is on the backs of college kids, and we know how reliable a block of voters they are. Once Obama goes from Democratic voters to "real" voters, who sense how liberal he is, and anti-Israel/pro-terrorist he is, I see an 84 election all over again.

re: #429 Truck Monkey

Actually no. I've been on a White House tour and you cannot get close..... and that was in 1976. I can only imagine what they don't let you see or get near now. In fact, back in '76 we could wander around the Capital Building and the Dirkson Building and not be bothered at all. Wesaw some pretty cool things in the Capital basement and a pretty weathered looking Joan Kennedy in one of the tunnels below the senate office bldg.

I toured the WH in '77, and I don't remember going anywhere near the oval office. One thing I remember is it seemed like the window frames had a zillion coats of paint on them.

Dan Rather has resubmitted his lawsuit against CBS

Dan Rather fired off a new lawsuit against his former network Tuesday, charging that CBS News labeled the anchor "too hot to handle" and prevented him from being hired by other networks after his acrimonious departure.

Rather was rebuffed in an earlier suit, when many of his claims were knocked down by a New York state judge. But the judge also allowed Rather to resubmit his claims.

Does everyone here think that the Dummycrats know they are about to pick as candidate for POTUS someone who is unelectable? Hillary stands a better chance, but I believe her to be unelectable as well. McCain wins in a landslide by default. I wonder if there is anyone in the Dummycratic party that can save it from itself.

A landslide ain't gonna happen.

We are going to get another 50/50 close call...the only question left to answer is which side it will fall on.

BDS is rampant amongst a large segment of the population, and the Dhimmi Hillary-haters will hold a weenie roast and sing "Kumbayah" with the Dhimmi Obama-haters and trash their buddy Maverick McCain, no matter what they say.

Meanwhile, the Repub McCain-haters (myself amongst them, I am no fan at all) will realize that a dead parrot would be a better choice for POTUS than either Hill-Bill or Barry Hussein, hold their collective nose, and vote for John.

No matter who, I will be swamped with newly legal illegals, my taxes will go up insanely to finance the education and hospital expenses, and gasoline will be $8 a gallon on alternate Tuesdays for my ration group. But I will have a small hope that the Supreme Court will not be loaded with RBS wannabees.

I came up with a really nice annual combo last year - alysum and peppermint stick (pink double bicolor) impatiens. I planted them around the base of my shrub roses, and they were stunning.

My mint plants are going to take over the whole damned yard if I don't get out there and do some thinning... but at least I'll have plenty of fresh mint for the mojitos this summer.

The trees here in Michigan are finally leafing out.

The people at Koz are of course saying (see below) that the reason that Obama will not do well in WV is because the people that live in the state are bigots. Amazing.

Actually (2+ / 0-)

My friends and I were jokingly discussing how it might be Obama's white half that hurts him more in predominantly racist areas.

Even in these areas, by and large, most people now accept the right of black people to exist and use the same water fountains (at least outwardly), but it is still perfectly OK to say that the races shouldn't mix (see the article on Michelle's college roommate).

Thus, ironically, it could hurt Obama more that he is half white. I hope that this campaign and Obama's presidency opens some peoples' eyes.

580 Kenneth  Thu, May 8, 2008 7:20:00am

Good morning everybody,

Banzai Hillary!

Obama will be almost invulnerable to personal criticism among the factions which supports him. After decades of loyally supporting a liberal white candidate, the emergence of a viable "Black Candidate" means a significant bloc of the Democratic Party now feels entitled to take their turn. Hillary's people have no standing in selecting who this bloc candidate is going to be. Any objection that Obama, at 46 can wait his turn, misses the point. It's not Obama's turn. It is the Black Voter bloc's turn. The Faustian bargain has come due. And Hillary is welshing.

...This means the year 2008 will see two transfers of power. The first involving the Presidency; the second involving the coalition blocs of the Democratic Party.

What ship is the Hillary Kamikaze crashing? It is the vessel of their old coalition.

Islamic court says Muslim convert can return to Buddhism

By Julia Zappei
Associated Press Writer / May 8, 2008

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia—A Malaysian Islamic court allowed a Muslim convert Thursday to return to her original faith of Buddhism, setting a precedent that could ease religious minorities' worries about their legal rights.

Lawyers said the Shariah High Court's verdict in the northern state of Penang was the first time in recent memory that a convert has been permitted to legally renounce Islam in this Muslim-majority nation.

A rising number of disputes about religious conversions has sparked anxiety among minorities -- predominantly Buddhist, Christian and Hindu -- because in the past courts virtually always ruled against people seeking to leave Islam.

Penang's Shariah court, however, granted Siti Fatimah Tan Abdullah's request to be declared a non-Muslim. She embraced Islam in 1998 because she wanted to marry an Iranian, but claimed she never truly practiced the religion.

"I am very happy," Siti, a 39-year-old ethnic Chinese cake seller, told The Associated Press by telephone. "I want to go to the temple to pray and give thanks."

The Shariah court, which governs Muslims' personal conduct and religious lives, ruled that Siti's husband and Islamic authorities failed to give her proper religious advice.

"So you can't blame her for her ignorance of the teachings and wanting to convert out," said Ahmad Munawir Abdul Aziz, a lawyer for the Islamic Affairs Council in Penang.

/ Nope. No precident there at all, that I can see. But it will be pointed to as an example of religious tolerance.

There are less than eight months until the election, an election that will decide the next President of the United States.

The person elected will be the president of "all" Americans, not just the Democrats or the Republicans.

To show our solidarity as Americans, let's all get together and show each other our support for the candidate of our choice.

It's time that we all came together, Democrats and Republicans alike.

In a Bi-Partisan effort for America:

If you support Obama or Hillary, please drive with your headlights off at night.

ARAB WORLD NOT CELEBRATING ISRAEL'S 60TH BIRTHDAY

Several wars and peace agreements later, Arabs want peace, but view Israel with mistrust, as a belligerent nation that talks peace but actively works to deny the Palestinians a viable state.

IMPORTANT!

If you support the policies and character of John McCain, please drive with your headlights on during the day.

If you support Obama or Hillary, please drive with your headlights off at night.

Together, we can make it happen

Sweet.

I like the concept, though I think that for the US, in practice it would quickly become distorted and perverted by the left.

It depends on who's in power when it is implemented. Most people still went into the military; there wasn't a choice of where to go, but they had to assign you to someplace that you were physically capable of doing the job. The moonbats would either learn or leave, and not get to vote.

But if it were implemented under a Carter, yes. Wouldn't matter then because the country would be gone if only moonbats could vote. Kind of like what could happen under Obama

Item of interest:

BBC reports on ME News coverage of events in Lebanon:

EGYPT'S AL-AHRAM

Hezbollah is being unjustly stripped of its weapons and its communications' network, leaving it without weapons in facing the Israeli army... This is what those who have special interests want. They are arranging the situation in Lebanon based on the desires of the US administration so that Israel alone possesses weapons.

So let's get this straight. Egypt gets $2 billion a year in US aid for their "efforts for peace" yet Egypt's official newspaper advocates undermining a central part of US global policy and supports a criminal terrorist proxy group opposed to Israel's (and America's for that matter) existence.

IF the American public ever knew what Egypt says and does, aid would be cancelled the next day.

New Iranian Surface-To-Surface Missile Found In Basra

Iraqi Defense Minister Abd Al-Qadir Al-Ubaydi said May 4 that Iraqi army searches in Basra turned up a new surface-to-surface missile.

Reliable Iraqi intelligence sources said that the missile was an Iranian Falaq 1, made in 2007, and that this was the first missile with such great destruction potential to be found in Iraq.

The sources said that if many such missiles had been brought into Iraq, "we are on the brink of a security catastrophe, both Iraqi and regional."

Hinting that the missile could have been sent from Iran together with a launch crew, the sources added that the launching of such missiles required great technical knowhow, and that at this point the militias were not likely to have such knowhow.

The sources also noted that Hizbullah used similar Iranian missiles in the July 2006 war against Israel.

Of course, there's no "proof" this Iranian made missile which was found in possession of Iranian trained & Iranian funded militias actually came from Iran. Why, it could have come from Walmart, for all we know.

Big push coming in Sadr City

Iraqi soldiers have begun evacuating families from portions of Sadr City, a sign that a large offensive will start shortly against the Mahdi Army militia that have long controlled the sector of Baghdad. Two stadiums have been secured for sheltering the evacuees as the government of Nouri al-Maliki attempts to break Moqtada al-Sadr’s last stronghold and end mortar attacks on the Green Zone.

Basra redux, watch for recycled stories about how Mookie's tough militias win the fight, by... um... loosing hundreds of fighters and running away.

an email from my mother, of all people. (She's kind of anti-gun... she doesn't mind if others have them, but she doesn't like them and thinks that they do bad things.... but she doesn't want to ban them.)

(A) The number of physicians in the U.S. is 700,000

(B) Accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year are 120,000.

(C) Accidental deaths per physician is 0.171.

Statistics courtesy of U.S. Dept of Health Human Services.

>

Now think about this:

Guns:

(A) The number of gun owners in the U.S. is 80,000,000.
(Yes, that's 80 million..)

(B) The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all age groups, is 1,500.

(C ) The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is .000188.
Statistics courtesy of FBI

So, statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.

Remember, "Guns don't kill people, doctors do."

FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN, BUT ALMOST EVERYONE HAS AT LEAST ONE DOCTOR.

Please alert your friends to this alarming threat.

We must ban doctors before this gets completely out of hand!

Out of concern for the public at large, I have withheld the statistics on lawyers for fear the shock would cause people to panic and seek medical attention

Funny, This was considered highbrow here four years ago:

An American Indian, an Arab and a Texan are talking. The Native American says, "My people once were many, now we are few." The Arab then addresses the group; "My people once were few, but now we are many." The Texan responds to the Arab, "That's because we haven't played cowboys and Arabs yet."

Y'all enjoy yourselves, and keep your foul weather gear on as you continue to piss in the wind.

re: #688 loppyd

loppy, when I was in Israel there was a TV program about a couple getting married on a show which is a copy of "Hell's Kitchen" with Gordon Ramsay. The teams of wannabe chefs had to compete to be the event caterers for this couple's wedding. The guy was so feminine-it made me puke. She talked about how he designs clothes for her, and helps style her hair, and they are so much in luuuuuv. They had a Wedding Specialist (flaming NTTAWWT), and wanted this special wine, that special dessert. My husband said "those kind of people have those kind of weddings and marriages that last for a few years at best". I was thinking, this girl just doesn't see that her boyfriend is latent.

re: #735 laZardo

You had the Philippines as colonies for 40 or so years.

See what I mean? Just one place, a few decades. And didn't even conquer them. They were already conquered by Spain, so one can't argue that we went in and took over a free people. We suck at this.

Look at the colonies of England, Spain, Portugal, France, and the Dutch, stretching across the globe. And they kept some for centuries, up until this day.

Heck, WE are a former colony of almost all those countries. And we don't use the excuse that being a former colony means we have to be a loser nation from now on. We suck at being a victim too.

And what did we do with our one puny conquest? We granted them freedom. Without a shot.

And when we could have easily taken over the whole world...

At the end of World War II, America stood astride the world as the unchallenged military and economic power. (Everyone else was in ruins, except the Soviets but their power was no where near ours.)
...
On the other hand, the United States not only had what was far and away the world's preeminent Navy; we also had large numbers of long-range strategic bombers and swarms of highly-seasoned fighter escorts. We had a Marine Corps flush with victories: battle-hardened men who had invented through blood and horror the means to go ashore on enemy beaches and stay there. We had an Army whose courage and skill in battle was unsurpassed, and whose critical supply and ordinance staffs were, by far, the best in the world.

And, of course, we had the atomic bomb, and the will to use it.

History has never, and will never, record a time when such unchallenged power existed in the hands of a nation, nor of a time when opposing forces were so weak and in such a state of disarray and abject surrender.

And these feared and ruthless Americans, a people who had incinerated cities in Europe and Japan and whose ferocity and tenacity on island jungles and French beaches had brought fanatical warrior cultures to their knees -' what did these new conquerors of the world do?

They went home is what they did.

Empire

buzz, I still see Savings Bonds being advertised inside a lot of banks, but not very aggressively. I think they'd be a great way to salt away savings for young people simply because you can buy them in such small, painless denominations, starting at $25 IIRC (value held to maturity,7 years?), price would depend on interest rate when you buy them.

When I was in basic training, our drill sergeants one day became pitchmen for savings bonds. "Our company is aiming for 100% participation. We will have 100% participation". LOL. I bought them every payday, I think a $25 bond face value cost about $17.50 then. I never held any till maturity, got broke and would cash them in early, one or two at a time, the amount I received depended on both the amount of time I'd held them and the interest rate at the time of early redemption.

Well, I've known a few supergeniuses in my time (PH.D. before the age of 20), and to a man they were really difficult to deal with. Very full of themselves, very full of their abilities, hated anyone trying to tell them anything.

I don't want to be like that, but some days around here I just feel like I'm dealing with complete airheads.

Everything has a hurdle. The greatest hurdle to intelligence is pride.

Just as good looks can lead to vanity.

(both of which you avoid, your husband would agree)

That's why I don't want to be a part of MENSA. I don't like the idea that I need to 'hang out with smart people' in order to have good conversation.

hubris.

Well, the problem with having a good conversation is that both people need to have at least a certain minimal knowledge of the topic of interest. Even if you get two supergeniuses in the room, unless they share that minimal info they won't have a good conversation. Just having a high IQ does nothing to force it to happen.

Good Morning, {all y'all}
I have no idea what my IQ is. Hubby's is 160 and older daughter is 152. I know I'm not in their range; however, the 152 IQ daughter still has me proofread things for her.

That was after the American forces tried to "kill everyone over ten."

Smith, the man who gave that order, was courtmartialled and found guilty.

It sounds to me like the US as a country disagreed with that thought. The test of a country isn't if it has any evil people, but whether that society condemns or lauds that evil.

I had a psycho prof who is VERY intelligent.

When his in-laws rented a van and it got damaged, he had no clue what to do.

I can't address the high IQ thing, but I can share this: Math is really easy for me up to a point in the middle of graduate school (hence all the degrees). I never could understand why people didn't just see how easy it all was. Algebra in high school was a piece of cake. It was perfectly logical. Geometry too. And I would see people just struggle to get through it and I couldn't understand why for the life of me. I've come to understand it now, after trying to help my husband through trigonometry years ago. But I have to remember to empathize in that area.

Here are the latest interest rates on US savings bonds, as of May 1st:
treasurydirect.gov
Interestingly, for the I bonds, the fixed portion of the rate for new bonds is zero, although the adjustable portion of the rate is quite decent.

Mistrusting the stock market back in 98-99, I bought some I bonds back when they were first offered, so my fixed rate portion is pretty high. And I'm not redeeming those until they quit earning interest. (My market investments of that same year haven't done nearly as well.)

OUTLAWING THE PIG
Janet Levy
FrontPageMagazine.com
Friday, 02 May 2008

The practice of political correctness may soon be tallying another casualty: the pig. Increasingly, as America and the rest of the Western world continue accommodating Muslim religious demands, pork food products are being singled out for removal from dining tables and pig-related trinkets banished from the desks of office workers.
...
A recent BBC report described how pork butchers are gradually being put out of business as Turkey adopts a more fundamentalist Muslim character. Pork slaughterhouses are being closed in record numbers to accommodate shariah law countrywide.

In 2004, a Muslim-owned investment company, Arcapita (formerly Capital Crescent Investments) acquired the 1,200-unit Church’s Chicken chain. In 2005, Arcapita, with a net income of $70.5 million and assets worth $1.2 billion (2004), enjoined a franchisee from selling pork products. In correspondence with the franchisee, the corporate owners cited violation of shariah law as the reason for prohibiting the sale of bacon, ham and sausages. The restaurant owners were thereby forced to surrender to corporate demands and operate under shariah law.

Where will this end? Will “Animal Farm” be banned at our high schools and university campuses? Will the words “pork barrel spending” and “porker” be eliminated from the vernacular? Will Piggly Wiggly supermarkets be forced to change its name and re-brand its products?

This could all be quite amusing if the implications weren’t so grave.
The pig is an icon of American culture, a culinary tradition and an important component of our economy. While high grain prices and competition from Chinese imports are recognized as the two greatest threats to the industry, hog producers could be overlooking a larger threat to their livelihood looming on the horizon.

Pork production is a vital part of the U.S. economy, producing more than 22 billion pounds of meat annually, contributing almost $40 billion to the GNP and employing more than 500,000 workers in pork-industry related jobs. In addition, important pork co-products include heart valves, skin grafts for burn victims, gelatin, plywood, glue, cosmetics and plastics.

At 28% of total world production, the U.S. is the second largest pork producer after China, which produces close to 50% of the world total. Pork ranks third in U.S. meat production behind beef and chicken and average yearly per capita consumption is about 50 pounds.

If the momentum to alter America’s dining habits and cultural traditions to suit Muslim religious habits continues, American liberty, freedom and culture could actually be threatened. Laughable though it may seem on the surface, Arab petrodollar profits have the heft to use an economic, backdoor approach to implement shariah law in the United States against the will of the public.

As Arab Muslims continue to heavily invest in our economy, they will continue to force submission to shariah law and undermine our democracy, individual rights and religious freedom. We must be vigilant and aware of this threat and act against it vigorously and immediately.

re: #805 Tamron

You know, I don't mind if pork slaughterhouses go out of business due to a lack of business.

If people join a religion that says "no pork" and enough join that there isn't business for pork slaughterhouses.... that's fine.

But to outlaw them based on the law of religion?

eh... no thanks.

Colby Buzzell, famous for his war blog and subsequent book titled "My War" has been called up 3 years after the active duty portion of his contract has been fulfilled (I assume as part of the IRR, Inactive Ready Reserve).

[Link: www.sfgate.com...]

"I know I won't get any sympathy at all from the "you dumb ass you signed the contract!" crowd, which is fine, but I really was looking forward to applying my GI Bill to photography classes so I could learn how to take pictures. But now, thanks to not enough Americans volunteering for military service, I now have to worry about my picture appearing on the second or third page of my hometown paper with the words, "it was his second deployment" in my obituary."

Sorry Colby, but your life isn't any more important than the rest of us because you wrote a book and became famous. Serving in the military is a privilege, one that I regretfully can no longer do since losing my right arm and half my left hand in Iraq. Remember, for every soft-bellied "I don't want to fulfill my contract" soldier, who doesn’t want to go back, there is a severely injured one like me who would gladly take his place.
