Installing MS Core Fonts in Ubuntu and Fedora 8

Thu, May 8, 2008 at 11:05:58 am PDT

Here’s an open thread, as I install the Microsoft Truetype “core” fonts in Ubuntu and Fedora 8.

This is the font package that’s on nearly every Mac and PC, including Verdana, Arial, and Georgia — fonts that are used on 90%+ of the web pages in existence, but don’t come installed by default on Linux. And LGF looks much better with Verdana and Trebuchet MS installed.

In Ubuntu, it’s very simple to install these fonts with the apt-get utility. Just open a Terminal window and type:

$ sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts

Then log out and back in, or restart.

In Fedora 8, you need to install the ‘chkfontpath’ package first; here’s the procedure that worked for me:

$ su (enter superuser password)
$ yum -y install chkfontpath
$ rpm -Uvh /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/noarch/msttcorefonts-2.0-1.noarch.rpm
$ exit (get out of superuser mode)

Again you’ll need to log out and log in to see the fonts.

UPDATE at 5/8/08 11:32:25 am:

If you’re a newbie to the command line interface, don’t type the dollar signs in the examples above — they’re the default shell prompts you see when entering commands, and that’s the usual way of showing CLI examples.

UPDATE at 5/8/08 3:11:01 pm:

LGF reader addison posted an alternate method for installing the fonts in Fedora 8, if the above doesn’t work:

$ wget http://corefonts.sourceforge.net/msttcorefonts-2.0-1.spec
$ yum install rpm-build cabextract
$ rpmbuild -ba msttcorefonts-2.0-1.spec
$ yum localinstall —nogpgcheck /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/noarch/msttcorefonts-2.0-1.noarch.rpm

@7: Synaptic worked for me. But I prefer the terminal method since it's more obvious to me what you need and besides, sometimes the "recommended" packages really should have been required.

It's a program that allows you to type Unix commands directly into the computer's brain.

You can do it with Mac OSX and with Linux. Not sure about Windows. I doubt it.

It's very powerful -- and very dangerous. You must know what you're doing to risk it.

Verdana was designed to solve the conflict between designing for the printed page and designing for the screen. Unlike earlier fonts, which if you were lucvky were optimized for one environment or the other, Verdana was custom-designed to look the same and look good both in print and onscreen.
And Trebuchet just kicks ass. Where I work, Arial is the standard. But Arial is an abomination, so I use Trebuchet. QED.

He rightly points out the major issue to be discussed relating to Israel's 60th Anniversary.

Despite numerous claims that their complaint is against the "Occupation", which they swear means that which took place in 1967, at this occasion they proove that it is actually the creation and existance of Israel that really bother's them.

The protests, etc., against Israel's 60th anniversay is not against the "occupation" (as defined above) but instead the entire existance of Israel itself.

/just as it was when multiple Arabs armies attacked Israel on May 15, 1948, promising genocide.

Man. I've just had a chance to catch up, and that Vietnam thread is downright disturbing. I think Charles has his finger on a really important -- and again, disturbing -- trend.

I'd like to think the UN, and much of the world at large, isn't that gullible. But I suspect otherwise.

As far as I know, they didn't use them -- when I asked for reasonable recompense for my work, they didn't want to pay. So they decamped. They just wanted free content. Ridiculous attitude.

As soon as they started low-balling me, I suspected it wasn't going to work out.

But we stayed on friendly terms. Maybe something will work out in the future.

Good luck with that and stick to your guns about payment. Mr. Russkilitlover is a photog and "worked" for a while in LA. Everyone thought that he should be grateful for the experience and additions to his portfolio and not be concerned about being actually paid.

JuChe is doctrine of DPRK complete self-reliance.

DPRK not need nothing from nobody never.

Step 1: Aggravate entire world--borders closed. Nothing can get in.
Step 2: Subjugate entire population. Nothing can get out.
Step 3: Reduce citizenry to animal-like conditions. Nobody expect nothing.
Step 4: Ted Turner bring me bottle of scotch. American orchestra play for me. All of my needs are met through my own actions. See? Self-Reliance!

What's a "Terminal window"?

On your windows machine, click on START, click on RUN, type in CMD, and press ENTER.

It should pop up a black box called the MSDOS Prompt.

It's kinda like that.

There is a program called synaptic with a nice, pretty, point and click GUI in Ubuntu that will do it all for you. Redhat has something similar. We give instructions for the CLI because it's easier to NOT screw it up. We do the same in tech support. It's much easier to say "type in 'CD-dot-dot'" than it is to say, "OK, you see that little picture of a folder with a right angle on it with the side that is pointing up has an arrow on it? Click that."

156 PoorMan  Thu, May 8, 2008 7:46:28pm

sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts (hit enter key)

then enter your password

Looks like it downloads a lot of infrastructure

158 loggiedog  Thu, May 8, 2008 8:36:12pm

Actually, for those scared of the command line but new to linux, in Ubuntu, click System : Administration : Synaptic Package Manager
and search for msttcorefonts. Check the box for the application or feature you want to install and click apply. Then hit control-alt-backspace (or log out and log in again) and you're good to go.

Thanx Loggie! You just proved my point in post 155. I would have attempted to say what you did, but I'm just too lazy to type all that. So, in conclusion, you can do what Loggie said that I quote above, or the other thing that Loggie said:

sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts (hit enter key)

160 loggiedog  Thu, May 8, 2008 9:19:43pm

#159,

ArcherB,

There's an easy way and a hard way to do things-- for those used to clicking on things, I guess Synaptic Package Manager is easy, but for those who feel relatively comfortable at the terminal, typing sudo apt-get something is a heck of a lot faster and easier.

The most difficult thing about Linux is that while it's possible to get most hardware to work properly under Linux, it's not always a straightforward path. Nonetheless, I prefer Linux to Windows any day, and only prefer Mac to Linux for photography work.

161 Geekasaurus  Thu, May 8, 2008 11:26:55pm

re: #53 Ward Cleaver

In Windows, it's called a command window. Click Start, Run, type in cmd.exe, and hit Enter. Type Exit to close the command window.

Thats kinda like saying that an Porsche 911 and a skateboard are the same thing since they both have 4 wheels. Try the following at a DOS prompt:
NUM=1;while test "$NUM" -le "100";do;echo "LGF Lizards rule the net!"; (( NUM = "$NUM" + "1" ));done

It will work in almost any Unix variant, but not DOS. The *nix--savvy lizard always has Putty installed, and knows to just highlight the above line, and press [CTRL][C] to copy, then put the cursor in the PuTTY window and right-click.

Charles--if you need help with any shell scripting, drop me an email.

I think Opensuse is one of the easier Linux distributions for new users because of the Yast Package manager.

Sweet! Things do indeed look better -- the default Ubuntu font has a ridiculous amount of whitespace around it. Even with my 1920x1200 desktop I felt like I was in 800x600 res with all the wasted space.

Thanks for the tip Charles -- saved me some time there. Timing was perfect too, I just upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS two days ago and that should be the final OS upgrade for this five year old dual-Athlon workhorse. Now I do all Internet tasks from here, keeping the new WinXP64 quad-core with all my work apps off the Net. I just need to DD-WRT or Tomato the WRT54G router, and I'll be set for the next while.

I for one don't mind the geeky tech posts BTW, especially the Linux ones.
