Civil War in Lebanon?

Thu, May 8, 2008 at 11:35:31 am PDT

If it isn’t civil war yet, it’s pretty close, as Hizballah flexes its muscles in a show of power: Fighting rocks Beirut, Hezbollah defiant.

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Fierce clashes raged in Beirut on Thursday after the Iranian-backed group Hezbollah said the U.S.-supported Lebanese government had declared war by targeting its communications network.

Fighters from Hezbollah and the allied Amal group exchanged assault rifle fire and rocket-propelled grenades with pro-government gunmen in several areas of the capital in the worst domestic fighting since the 1975-90 civil war.

Fighters from Hezbollah and the allied Amal group exchanged assault rifle fire and rocket-propelled grenades with pro-government gunmen in several areas of the capital in the worst domestic fighting since the 1975-90 civil war.

What they meant to say is that terrorists and their supporters exchanged fire with the government's military and civilians caught in the crossfire.

Hizbullah is trying to wrap themselves up in the flag, but they're not above completely stomping all over the flag, the government, and anyone who stands in their way of completely dominating Hizbullahland.

I have no doubt that UNIFIL will be ineffectual in making Hizbullah lay down its arms.

I also suspect that this is timed to coincide with the ongoing operations in Iraq, where Iranian puppet Mookie Sadr is getting packing by Iraqi and US forces from Basra and Iranian minions are about to feel the heat in Sadr City in Baghdad. The Iranians need to get the upper hand, and stirring things up in Lebanon courtesy of their proxy army Hizbullah favors them.

Fierce clashes raged in Beirut on Thursday after the Iranian-backed group Hezbollah said the U.S.-supported Lebanese government had declared war by targeting its communications network

This is an edit from yesterday's template, when they said "US backed" instead of "supported", making it equal in strength with the Iranian backing, and had it in the first paragraph, with "Iranian backed" in the second.

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Supporters of Lebanon's U.S.-backed government fought gun battles in Beirut on Wednesday with gunmen loyal to the Hezbollah-led opposition, escalating the country's worst internal crisis since the 1975-90 civil war.

Supporters of Iranian-backed Hezbollah blocked main roads in the Lebanese capital with blazing tires, old cars and heaps of earth, paralyzing the city and cutting routes to its sea and air ports.

I called them on it. Hey Reuters, you DO read lgf.

You're assuming quite a bit that Israel will get into this fight. Hizbullah might attempt still more attacks against Israel, to goad Israel into acting, but I don't see Israel fighting alongside the Lebanese government at this time. Especially with the Olmert government. They'd much rather give away territory at a negotiating table and call it peace even as the terrorists plot to use that very land as a launching pad for war against Israel.
