Civil War in Lebanon?

Thu, May 8, 2008 at 11:35:31 am PDT

If it isn’t civil war yet, it’s pretty close, as Hizballah flexes its muscles in a show of power: Fighting rocks Beirut, Hezbollah defiant.

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Fierce clashes raged in Beirut on Thursday after the Iranian-backed group Hezbollah said the U.S.-supported Lebanese government had declared war by targeting its communications network.

Fighters from Hezbollah and the allied Amal group exchanged assault rifle fire and rocket-propelled grenades with pro-government gunmen in several areas of the capital in the worst domestic fighting since the 1975-90 civil war.

Fighters from Hezbollah and the allied Amal group exchanged assault rifle fire and rocket-propelled grenades with pro-government gunmen in several areas of the capital in the worst domestic fighting since the 1975-90 civil war.

What they meant to say is that terrorists and their supporters exchanged fire with the government's military and civilians caught in the crossfire.

Hizbullah is trying to wrap themselves up in the flag, but they're not above completely stomping all over the flag, the government, and anyone who stands in their way of completely dominating Hizbullahland.

I have no doubt that UNIFIL will be ineffectual in making Hizbullah lay down its arms.

I also suspect that this is timed to coincide with the ongoing operations in Iraq, where Iranian puppet Mookie Sadr is getting packing by Iraqi and US forces from Basra and Iranian minions are about to feel the heat in Sadr City in Baghdad. The Iranians need to get the upper hand, and stirring things up in Lebanon courtesy of their proxy army Hizbullah favors them.

22 Filala  Thu, May 8, 2008 11:41:35am

A Hezbollah communications network would mean a ton of trouble and most likely the takeover of Lebanon. Looks like another cycle in this endless war.

My friend's dad restarted a boat (pleasure craft) repairing facility near the northernmost part of Beirut. He had been gone from Lebanon since the early 80's.

He left Lebanon again last year, to return to Virginia. He said he was homesick for Lebanon, but this wasn't the Lebanon he was homesick for anymore.

Fierce clashes raged in Beirut on Thursday after the Iranian-backed group Hezbollah said the U.S.-supported Lebanese government had declared war by targeting its communications network

This is an edit from yesterday's template, when they said "US backed" instead of "supported", making it equal in strength with the Iranian backing, and had it in the first paragraph, with "Iranian backed" in the second.

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Supporters of Lebanon's U.S.-backed government fought gun battles in Beirut on Wednesday with gunmen loyal to the Hezbollah-led opposition, escalating the country's worst internal crisis since the 1975-90 civil war.

Supporters of Iranian-backed Hezbollah blocked main roads in the Lebanese capital with blazing tires, old cars and heaps of earth, paralyzing the city and cutting routes to its sea and air ports.

I called them on it. Hey Reuters, you DO read lgf.

You're assuming quite a bit that Israel will get into this fight. Especially with the Olmert government. How the Outcome in Sadr City Led to Today’s Clashes in Beirut

The Siniora cabinet and the March 14 political coalition that props it up have been doing and saying many provocative things from Hezbollah’s vantage point over the last two years from, yet Hezbollah chose to be provoked yesterday and today; why is that?

Ostensibly, Hezbollah is responding to the Lebanese government’s decision to sack the security chief of Beirut’s international airport, and to dismantle Hezbollah’s secure landline-based communications network that had been expanded recently.

What could have spurred-on this over-reaction on Hezbollah’s part, which has been manifested so far with flexing its muscles in the Sunni area of Beirut, seemingly showing-up the government as weak and vulnerable?

I believe Iran needed to show the United States and its Arab allies that it can humiliate them by overrunning the government they back in Beirut and that they’d be unable to do anything about it, and I believe that Iran needed to make this point now because the Mahdi Army in Iraq has collapsed.

Iran has been backing certain factions of the Mahdi Army with training and arms as an investment in a force for chaos, which can be held in reserve and unleashed against the Americans in Iraq in the event that George Bush may order a bombing run against Iran’s illicit nuclear program this summer—something he’s be egged-on to do by U.S. allies such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan.

Veeeery interesting....

You're an asshole. Unifil troops are given a charter which governs what they can and can't do. It's got nothing to do with their integrity as individuals. Irish troops have been posted on the border and have lost over 100 men down the years.

This is true in most cases, except for the UN Troops raping women in Africa.

Official responses have been pouring in:

McCain: "This underscores why Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons."

Bush: "Saudi Arabia has informed me that the United States will follow a policy of watchful waiting at this conjuncture."

Hillary Clinton: "If I am elected president, I will immediately withdraw Hizbollah forces from Lebanon, and end this terrible war. The choice is yours, America."

Barack Obama: "The situation in Lebanon is bad, but I would not intervene by deploying American forces there. However, in the unlikely event that Hizbollah becomes involved, I would deploy the Marines immediately. I'll give you my full statement after I finish this waffle."

United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL): It is with great pleasure that we announce the beginning of phase II of our work here: the liberation of Lebanon by the Army of God, Hizbollah (praise be upon their holy efforts). We hope to destroy the zionist cancer by the end of the summer.

Somewhat off topic but relevant to the liberation of Lebanon is an article at FrontPage today: "Bringing Down The Mullahs"

By Dan Rabkin
FrontPageMagazine.com | 5/8/2008

Potkin Azarmehr, an Iranian human rights and pro-democracy activist, joined me for an interview that I did for FrontPage Magazine. He is a representative of the Confederation of Iranian Students and Graduates in the United Kingdom, a member of the Azerbaijani Movement for a United Democratic Iran, and a member of the Iranian Enterprise Institute. He has appeared on CNN, Voice of America, BBC, Sky News, and Al-Jazeera. Mr. Azarmehr also recently participated in the Struggle for Democracy in the Islamic World conference in Rome and was an official guest of the U.S. State Department on the first tour of America for Iranian expatriates since the Iranian Revolution in 1979. You can read his blog at [Link: azarmehr.blogspot.com...]

[snip]

Here is what we should do in the West to help:

We should appeal to and mobilize the students and academics in the West, because the Islamic Republic suppresses academics and students in Iran.

We should appeal to and mobilize the trade unions and workers in the West, because the Islamic Republic suppresses workers and trade unions in Iran.

We should appeal to and mobilize women in the West, because the Islamic Republic suppresses Iran’s women.

We should appeal to and mobilize writers, artists, and performers in the West, because the Islamic Republic threatens the freedom of these people both inside and outside of Iran.

We should appeal to and mobilize journalists in the West, because the Islamic Republic kills and imprisons journalists.

We should appeal to and mobilize those around the globe who believe in freedom of religion, because the Islamic Republic suppresses people of other faiths, and even Shiites who do not accept the interpretations of the ruling clerics.

We should appeal to and mobilize those who are against the execution of minors and homosexuals and are against human rights abuses, because these types of things are rampant in the Islamic Republic.

We should enlighten and mobilize the left, because the Islamic Republic is not the “progressive” champion of the poor as some of the leftists in the West imagine. This is the same mistake that the Iranian left made and they paid a very heavy price for their mistake. The left in Iran were amongst the first victims of the religious tyranny that massacred them. The Ayatollahs hate no one more than the atheist socialists.

I believe we can appeal to and mobilize everyone around the world. We just need the means to be heard.

[snip]

This is a good lengthy article for historical info, present realities, and future strategies for liberation of/in The Islamic Republic of Iran.

I'm sure it would if it could, but despite the mythology of the Mossad, its not so easy to go into a foreign country, assassinate a well-guarded political figure, and get away with it.

As to this escalation of violence, I think anyone watching the situation knew it was coming. Hizb'Allah has been trying to take over Lebanon for decades, and it already effectively runs the Southern part. The Lebanese government is weak, always has been, and is recently weaker by the repeated assassination of any strong anti-Syrian or anti-Hizb'allah elements.

No longer majority Christian, Lebanon is effectively now at the tipping point. Its best bet is for Israel to come in with a scorched earth type invasion, though that's simply not going to happen at this point.

Their favorite weapons, unguided surface-to-surface missiles, are useless in a civil war. They let fly some of those towards Beruit, and they will lose any popular support they have in the area.

That means a war of AKs and RPGs and other small arms. If the US would really back the government of Lebanon, then Hizb'Allah could be beaten. What the government of Lebanon alone can do, well, that remains to be seen.

Senator Barack Obama

Obama for America
P.O. Box 8102
Chicago, IL 60680

Dear Senator Obama,

This has been an historic and exciting campaign. Millions of new voters have been brought into the process and their enthusiasm for the Democratic Party and the principles for which you and I have fought and continue to fight is unprecedented.

One of the foremost principles of our party is that citizens be allowed to vote and that those votes be counted. That principle is not currently being applied to the nearly 2.5 million people who voted in primaries in Florida and Michigan. Whoever emerges as the Democratic nominee will be hamstrung in the general election if a fair and quick resolution is not reached that ensures that the voices of these voters are heard. Our commitment now to this goal could be the difference between winning and losing in November.

I have consistently said that the votes cast in Florida and Michigan in January should be counted. We cannot ignore the fact that the people in those states took the time to be a part of this process and to make their preferences known. When efforts were untaken by leaders in those states to hold revotes to ensure that they had a voice in selecting our nominee, I supported those efforts. In Michigan, I supported a legislative effort to hold a revote that the Democratic National Committee said was in complete compliance with the party's rules. You did not support those efforts and your supporters in Michigan publically opposed them. In Florida a number of revote options were proposed. I am not aware of any that you supported. In 2000, the Republicans won an election by successfully opposing a fair counting of votes in Florida. As Democrats, we must reject any proposals that would do the same.

Your commitment to the voters of these states must be clearly stated and your support for a fair and quick resolution must be clearly demonstrated.

I am asking you to join me in working with representatives from Florida and Michigan and the Democratic National Committee to arrive at a solution that honors the votes of the millions of people who went to the polls in Florida and Michigan. It is not enough to simply seat their representatives at the convention in Denver. The people of these great states, like the people who have voted and are to vote in other states, must have a voice in selecting our party's nominee.

Sincerely,

Hillary Rodham Clinton

Listening to Daniel Snore Schorr last week on NPR, as he bemoaned the operation of the democratic selection process and urged the institution of a single national primary, I could not help but marvel at the anti-democratic sentiments the "party of the people" hide in plain sight.

A national primary and then a national election really isnt too bad of an idea. We had a crappy crapp crapp caucus. Only the big shots within the party structure even get to vote so whats the point and we wind up with McCain.

re: #317 buzzsawmonkey

One thing that should be pointed out is that the Republican primary system is much simpler and more democratic than the "Democrat" system, which is gratuitously arcane.

The state-by-state primary system is a good one, IMHO, insofar as it is yet another expression of federalism; a single national primary would, like the abandonment of the Electoral College, ensure that candidates would only have to address the concerns of (read: "pander to" if you're feeling cynical) each individual state. In fact, one could argue that even more than the Electoral College, it guarantees that candidates MUST campaign in every state and earn the votes of citizens in every part of the country. Yes you can ignore states, but at your peril; in any event the media (and this is one place where their wacky obsession with the minutiae of electioneering is useful) forces the candidates to go out and kiss babies in places where, in the absence of state primaries, they'd never go.

(Gotta run and turn in my final grades -- yippee I"m done!)

Why is it always "US-supported" Lebanon? It's not like we're propping them up that much. It makes it sounds as though Lebanon is a puppet government of the US. Especially next to "Iran-supported" Hez. Now Iran IS basically funding and propping up Hez.

Please, Hez would say they declared war if they saw a citizen spit out gum onto their side of the street. "It was an act of disrepect and aggression! We are at war! They declared it with the desecration of our streets with INFIDEL SPIT!"

"INFIDEL SPIT!" Arrrrrrgh!

That's actually a critical part of the process, and I think one developmentally necessary to create a good President.

Hitting each state and talking to voters there (not to mention mingling with the muckety-mucks who run the politics inside the state) is part of the learning process every candidate needs to become President.

Otherwise consider that many, if not most of the candidates have literally never been to all 50 states in their lives.

The drawn out process gives the candidates time to polish their acts, as well as extra time for We the people to get a good look at them.

OK, folks, now I've got a new dilemma with Fox News.

They did come crawling back and say they would like to get some specific photos from me in the future (and will pay for it) -- but on one condition: they insist on knowing who I am.

Now, my general rule is: I tell NO ONE my real identity. And I intend to stick by that rule.

So, what should my course of action be? Potential options include:

a. Tell Fox up front that I will never reveal my identity to them, and they'll just have to accept that fact. If their lawyers say that would make a relationship impossible, then so be it -- I can't work with them.

b. Just give them a fake made-up name, and tell them to pay me via PayPal (where my "name" is not needed -- no checks involved).

c. Enlist a friend/cohort/relative to act as my "beard," and give Fox that person's name instead of my own.

d. Just ask Fox right now what proof they'll need of my identity -- will they need to see my ID or something? Will they insist on paying by check? Will they require my Social Security number? If they say no proof is needed -- then give them a fake name. But by doing it this way, they'll basically know it's a fake name.

e. Just tell them my real name and violate the First Rule of Zombietime.

f. Say nothing at the moment, but over the next 48 hours provide them with the exact pictures they requested -- and make sure they're great pictures...and after I have them chomping at the bit for them -- inform Fox that they can use them if and only if I still get to keep my anonymity.

Israel and the U.S. have already been 'blamed'/implicated. Of COURSE Hezobllahs going to point the finger at us. They see the Lebanese govt has nothing but a "puppet" of the U.S./Israel.

Of course the fact that the Lebanese govt is loaded with Sunnis doesn't enter into this now does it...

"Nasrallah claimed Hezbollah’s secure network of primitive private land lines helped the guerrillas fight Israel’s high-tech army in the 2006 summer war.

He said the telecommunications network was “the most important part of the weapons of the resistance” and added Hezbollah had a duty to defend those weapons.

“The decision is tantamount to a declaration of war ... on the resistance and its weapons in the interest of America and Israel,” Nasrallah said.

that's the corner of the Kaba...the giant stainless vagina where you either

a) kiss the stone a where a schizophrenic pedophile walked, thus making you crazy yourself
or
b) stick your head in and go through a rebirthing ritual to be reborn as a bloodthirsty intolerant mutilator of women's genitalia.

lotta choices...

I'd rather piss in it.

I find beauty in butter, in all it's various forms too.

But that doesn't mean I display my butter to the general public.

Use PayPal, the safe and secure way to buy and sell online.

I do use PayPal -- but Fox insists in knowing my real name anyway.

Tits on bull pose no hazard to little boys, girls or goats.

Meet the Martian Heat Ray, Model M1. Fact is, we promote this as a non-lethal weapon when in fact is was designed to burn personnel to death from the inside out..

As far as I can tell, this is effectively a directional microwave oven.

Undoubtedly its capable of killing people, but most probably aren't going to stand still long enough for it to happen.

Good for riot/crowd control, but I don't think it would have the ability to injure people inside of buildings or such, and the beams are probably relatively easily shielded.

I wouldn't give them your real identity. Remember, they are a news organization. Wouldn't they love to be the ones who find out who the real Zombie is?

They probably need to issue you a 1099 form. If the payment is over $600, then that is the law. So, sell the photos for $599.

the only things to do would be either "E" (my 1st choice) or "A". (sorry, maybe I would just be looking for my 15 minutes of fame)

My goal is to AVOID my 15 minutes of fame. I seek total obscurity for my "actual identity."

How are cuts "involuntary" who has a gun to the Slime's head tell them to RIF staff? If it they have to make cut's to kept out of the red, they have other options.

NYSlimes plays the victim card... yet again.

Yeah, but they HAD to make those cuts.... poor them.... because people like us just aren't required to buy their newspaper!

How horrible of us to put those people out on the streets..... and just before Mothers' Day!

(this just shows how horrible the Bush Economy is and how deep of a recession we are in. And don't bother showing me anything saying that the economy is going up, if NYT reporters are on the streets, it is a recession!)

(yes, / )

re: #396 zombie,

I'd think that even if you supplied them with your real name you wouldn't be taking much of a risk. Reporters go to jail rather than reveal anonymous sources. I think any way you go you'd still get to keep my anonymity from the greater world.
