I must admit goddess, I do not use garden gloves except when I am having to drag the miserable blackberry brambles out of the garden. Then I just use something I grabbed off the shelf at the hardware store that fits and is thick enough to protect my hands. Never had a blister from gardening.

Have lizard junior do your heavy digging, get a cheap pair of gloves at the hardware store and most importantly get hand tools that fit your hands. Some garden tools like trowels have very fat handles that can be uncomfortable to use.

If that were true, Denzel Washington and Samuel L. Jackson would not be two of the biggest stars in America. The reality is that if one finds any reason for criticizing a notable Black, say that Communist cretin who used to "represent" me in Congress, Cynthia McKinney, you must be a racist.

As for the "subconscious," anyone who claims to be able to describe what the American "subconscious" is is full of dingo-doo. You can't put a nation on the couch.

re: #31 zionausi

I don't think that anyone can give you an honest picture of what "black white relations in the US" are in even 1000 words or less, starting with the quite apparent fact that many blacks seem to have a very different view than whites do and that black-white relations literally can change from one city block to the next.

You might try asking for specific examples of ridiculous statements.

36 Lucius Septimius  Fri, May 9, 2008 3:49:59am

re: #30 galloping granny

The US is a pretty big place. I would venture a guess that black-white relations in my little Vermont town, where there is one black family, are pretty different than black-white relations in LA. Or at Trinity Church in Chicago.

Or Atlanta -- I remember when, in the aftermath of 9/11 when it came out that Cynthia McKinney, the original patroness of the troofers, had received on the day before 9/11 piles of money from Arab donors and thence lost in the dem primary, her father standing up and yelling about how she was undone by the J*E*W*S. Or our benighted mayoress Shirley Jackson and Hizdisonor Andrew Young doing radio spots last year claiming that Republicans "wanted to bring back the dogs and firehoses." Hatred of whites is the stock and trade of the Black "leadership" in these parts. Now you could argue that they learned it from the segregationists who ran the state a half-century ago, but the fact is that they are every bit as bad as the evil they claim to fight against, an evil that hasn't existed for a generation or more. Oh, and who votes for them? Rich white folks; a previous Black mayor, the one who said the '96 Olympics were the first ever held in "an African City," owed his success to rich and upper-middle-class white (and in once case, largely gay) voters in two sections of the city. Meanwhile, he lost the hard-core poor black parts of the city, but in those areas voter turnout was only about 5%, so it didn't matter.

Rich ultra liberal whites putting into office race-baiting Blacks. That's the story of race relations where I live.

re: #19 zionausi

"Strained relations..." is a pretty broad statement.

IMO, anybody who proclaims some insight into another culture without having lived in that culture, and studied it closely, is likely to end up misled by their own pre-formed opinions.

Compared to Australia, the US has larger urban areas with much large populations of various minorities. There exists, as everywhere, a self selection. That is, a certain member of a group will choose to move to locations and associate with people with whom they feel comfortable.

A great deal of the violent crime data would suggest inequity between races if one didn't include all other factors (such as age group and gang membership, which are strong factors.)

The one area where there has been much discussion is that that the percentage of black males with prison records is much higher than for caucasians. I believe it is in New Mexico state where almost 1/3 of all black males have prison records (but you need to check me on that.) This has apparently caused problems down the line as prison records usually make it harder to get employment, etc.

However, other people have pointed out that the so called War on Drugs is a significant contributor to this disparity (among black and caucasian males.) That is, a large number of the black males in prison are guilty of minor drug possession charges, say marijuana possession, but because they are repeat offenders get sent to prison (some states have "three strikes" laws.)

So I think this is a very complex issue. Frankly this issue (of African descended populations) shows up anywhere the slave trade went, and a small minority of African slaves ended up in the US proper.

I've lived overseas in the orient, and my perception is that in that part of the world racism was much more intense and institutionalized than in the US. However, as much of the modern media is US based the American issues become much more well known than similar issues in say Korea or China or Taiwan or Indonesia, etc...

On black heros in films and media... I have to give that one more thought. Again, it is not unexpected that someone on the otherside of the world would judge the US by films coming out of the US, but perhaps that says more about the film industry than general US culture.

Good Morning Lizards.

Here's a shocker, California Democrats are looking to raise taxes.

California tax proposals target beer-loving, pornography-watching yacht owners

SACRAMENTO -- As state leaders hunt for politically palatable solutions to the swelling budget shortfall, some Democrats are proposing unorthodox ways to generate cash.

Strip clubs, six-packs, grocery bags and iTunes downloads are all in their sights as alternatives to broad income or sales tax hikes. So are gas guzzlers and yachts -- and a tax loophole for criminals.

Of course, the idea of higher taxes is not well received by the public:

"Some people are e-mailing, threatening to come and slug me," said Assemblyman Jim Beall (D-San Jose), who hopes to see a $1.80 tax added to the price of every six-pack of beer sold in the state. "We're getting some pretty nasty comments."

Porn is on the list for higher taxes:

Calderon said the resistance to his bill did not surprise him. But he is perplexed that he hasn't been able to get more traction for another proposal: a 25% tax on sex toys, strip shows, pornographic magazines and videos and anything else sold in an "adult entertainment venue."

Which goes to show that the left has absolutely no objection to porn, they just want their piece of the action.

Plastic bags are on the hit list:

Assemblyman Mike Davis (D-Los Angeles) is targeting a wider group of consumers. Almost every Californian would bear some of the brunt of his proposal to charge a 25-cent tax on every plastic carryout bag from stores.

The elderly is targeted for a "tax break" that will make them work for free for the government:

But Davis says he knows people are suffering financially and has proposed a property tax break for low-income seniors. There's a catch: The proposal (AB 2459) would require seniors to "work off" their taxes in county offices, doing such jobs as gardening, record filing or data entry.

Fidel Castro only dreamed of pulling this last one.

This is going to be an interesting political season.

And yet in New Mexico, the fact that 1/3 of all blacks have prison records really would not give you the true picture at all, since New Mexico is overwhelmingly bi-cultural between American Indians of various tribes and whites of either American or Spanish heritage. There are very few blacks proportionally in New Mexico.

True, it's mostly a Gramscian anti-American propaganda machine, run by a bunch of rich folk who wish the US were a dictatorship and they were the Politburo.

I was told that if the hero in a film was black then he would have minor character flaws because a black person cant be perfect. i thought it was all bullshit.

Any character in a movie that is presented without character flaws would make for a poor story!

The best/most significant movie made, according to some movie critics, is Citizen Kane. The movie is about exploring the flawed character who happens to be one of the most famous and rich white Americans.

The most watched/loved movie may have been The Wizard of Oz, a story based around examining the flaws of the major characters.

Regarding race relations, one of the most famous movies Hollywood ever made is Showboat (made several times.) The movie is about exposing the character flaws of the (predominantly) white culture and characters.

And the list goes on...

IMO your teacher may have it backwards. Hollywood has the tendancy, probably, in not giving black characters enough flaws to be fully real.

I lived in Germany for several years as an Army wife. At the time, the US military had not had a pay raise since WWII or Korea, so even sergeants' families had to pinch pennies in a big way. Winter mornings I would run around to the corner store and invariably the proprietress would ask where my stockings were. I would explain that I could not afford stockings. They released another 'documentary' about Abu Grahib called Standard Operating Procedure that I'm sure will be as much a box-office flop critical success as No End in Sight or Taxi to The Darkside. The newspaper's movie review guy in the newspaper, unsurprisngly, loved it....complete with this quote that smacks of the derision, contempt and condescension the MSM views the military with.

They are young soldiers, most of them still talking with the twang of their rural homes, and many still bewildered by what happened to them.

I guess a documentary on the people who've made it clear in no uncertain terms they'd like to kill as many Americans as possible is out of the question.

A ringing endorsement no doubt, but Barrack will explain after his election how we must help the Israelis understand what is truly in their interests ( like small children) by chatting with Hamas and setting up a peace initiative that the Iranians will find acceptable.
He has the Carter administration foreign policy advisors on his team after all.

Expect Israel to preempt some things before Barry gets sworn in.

The Kingwood teenager's story of decapitating a corpse and using the head to smoke marijuana was so outlandish that at first Houston Police Department senior police officer Jim Adkins did not believe it.

Yet, Kevin Wade Jones Jr., 17, appeared almost indifferent as he relayed the bizarre description of his and two friends' activities at an Humble area graveyard, Adkins said.

"I just doubted it because it's very morbid, and I couldn't see anybody doing something like this," Adkins said Thursday.

Not until police went to the home of another Kingwood 17-year-old, Matthew Richard Gonzalez, did the officer believe the tale.

"He regurgitated in his plate of food when I asked him about it," Adkins said. "So I knew there was some truth to the story."

Pastor Motilal Das of United Bethany Church said that at around 3 a.m. on Friday (May 2) the villagers sexually assaulted his daughter, Elina Das, and left her unconscious in front of his house in an attempt to drive him and his Christian ministry out of Laksmipur village in Fulbaria sub-district, 120 kilometers (75 miles) north of the capital.

Local residents have long been angry with him for his ministry and evangelism, he said, and he has received death threats.

re: #71 yochanan

Japan is one of the most ethnocentric of nations. Koreans who have been living in Japan for houndreds of years are not considered Japanese even if all the speak is Japanese.

Yes, they can be born in Japan, speak on Japanese, pay taxes, etc. and yet they are still listed as Koreans. Japan is the classic xenophobic island culture.

The US does integration very well, IMO, given the size of the task and compared to other nations.

There is still lots of room for improvement, especially I think in areas concerning African Americans who are "succesful". I have heard the argument made by successful blacks that the have to achieve X times of much (in regards to their chosen fields) than a white colleague to reach the point where those around them will finally ignore that they are black and simply see their achievements. In other words, the race-consciousness only becomes color-blindness when an overwhelming amount of success of achieved. I believe McWhorter makes a case similar to this.

Put another way, when our culture looks at a successful black person (say in academics), then we tend to notice them as a successful black person, rather than just a successful person. It is as if there is an expectation (amongst everybody) of lower performance for African-Americans...

The other area of improvement would be in the judicial system... I really don't know what to make of the disparity. Are blacks being targeted because of race? ( I don't believe it is this simple.) Or, rather are certain economic groups more likely to be caught? Or, are prisons filled disproportionately by people from higher population density areas, areas which may also have larger minority populations?

To the student concerned about this topic... remember that the US is the third most populous nation on earth! Only China and India have more people. Both those nations have many minorities. Recommend you compare those two nations to the US and see how minorities come out....

.“Well, the new pastor, the young pastor, Reverend Otis Moss, is a wonderful young pastor,” Obama responded. “And as I said, I still very much value the Trinity community.”

But a videotape of a sermon he delivered at Wright’s church shows this “wonderful young pastor” referring to “ghetto prophets” and “thug theology,” calling the late rapper Tupac Shakur a “prophet,” and reciting at length lyrics to Shakur’s song “Thugz Mansion.”

Moss also states in the sermon:

“Jesus has a soft spot for thugs.”
“God is always using thugs to do God’s work.”
“Everyone has a little bit of thug in them.”
Noah was a “thug” who “was drinking much gin and juice and got drunk on the eve of reconstruction.”
Abraham “pimped his own wife.”
Jacob was a “hustler” who “stole his own brother’s birthright.”
Moses was a “thug” and “if he got mad would give you a royal beatdown.”

Who defines anything at the UN? The coalition of dictators, a large proportion of whom are Islamists and their friends, who make up the general assembly. Rest assured that "protection" would never be applied to any group which is not Muslim, or at least not Islamist.

Except Israel and the United States of America.

KARACHI, : US Ambassador Anne W. Patterson has said that the depth of anti-Americanism in Pakistan, especially in the middle class, has surprised her because Pakistan’s long-term interests are aligned with “ours and with those of other western countries”.

“I suspect that those who oppose American engagement in Pakistan have a limited understanding of how our partnerships — economic assistance and financial interactions — changed the lives of everyday Pakistanis in real and positive ways,” she said at a meeting with corporate leaders here on Thursday. The meeting was organised by the Management Association of Pakistan.

“It appears that people who come up with the most fanciful conspiracy theories do so in an attempt to distract the public from the true causes of extremism and poverty.”

She warned that the increasingly prosperous middle class would be the first to suffer because extremists were gaining ground. “Extremists have gained ground during the past two years,” she said.

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) - A U.N. official says the World Food Program is suspending cyclone aid to Myanmar because its government seized supplies flown into the country.
He says the WFP has no choice but to suspend the shipments until the matter is resolved.

WFP spokesman Paul Risley said Friday that all "the food aid and equipment that we managed to get in has been confiscated." The shipment included 38 tons of high-energy biscuits.

Risley said it is not clear why the material was seized.

TYLER, Texas — A jury again needed just four minutes Thursday to convict an organizer of an East Texas swinger's club where prosecutors say young children were forced to perform sexual acts for an audience.

Shauntel Mayo, 29, faces life in prison after being found guilty on charges that she forced three siblings, ages 7 through 10, to have sex with each other or perform sexual acts for club members who paid to watch.

In March, Mayo's 36-year-old boyfriend, Jamie Pittman, was also found guilty in four minutes. He was sentenced to life in prison after jurors deliberated for just two minutes.

Will Smith In Trouble Over 9/11 Comments

Will Smith has found himself at the centre of a public row after comparing the 9/11 terrorists to racist American cops.

The Men In Black star sparked outrage among right-wing Americans after speaking candidly to a German newspaper. When asked if the terror attacks had changed him, Smith said: "No, absolutely not... Whether you are wounded in an attack by a racist cop or in a terrorist attack, I'm sorrry, it makes no difference. In the 60s, blacks were continuously the victims of terrorist attacks. It was civil terrorism, but terrorism nonetheless."

This was enough to persuade the group Patriotic Americans Boycotting Anti-American Hollywood to add Smith to its list of "banned" stars. The 36-year-old will find himself in good company - the list already includes Robert Redford and Renee Zellweger. Patriotic Americans founder Jon Alvarez said: "I've always been a huge fan. But now I'm not going to put a dime in Will Smith's pockets."

Nuclear missiles and tanks paraded Friday across Red Square for the first time since the Soviet era but new President Dmitry Medvedev warned other nations against "irresponsible ambitions" that he said could start wars.
Marching bands and 8,000 troops goose-stepped across the square, followed by a huge display of heavy weapons including Topol-M ballistic missiles and T-90 tanks, and a fly-by of warplanes.

Reviewing his first parade as commander in chief, Medvedev warned against "irresponsible ambitions" that he said could spark war across entire continents.

In an apparent attack on US foreign policy and Western backing for Kosovo's independence, Medvedev also criticised "intentions to intrude in the affairs of other states and especially redraw borders."

Alongside the new president was his mentor and now prime minister, Vladimir Putin, standing under bright sunshine in a tribune in front of Lenin's Mausoleum, the Soviet holy of holies that was screened off by a giant hoarding inscribed with May 9, 1945.

The show of strength on the 63rd anniversary of victory against Nazi Germany symbolised Moscow's growing boldness following eight years of rule by Putin, whose hawkish policies have set Russia at loggerheads with Western capitals.

Medvedev, who was inaugurated Wednesday, is a close ally of Putin and had been his aide for much of the last two decades.

Many analysts believe that Medvedev, 42, will be a weak president reliant on the support of Putin, 55, who on Thursday became prime minister.

Talking about music, I remember seeing a fall down drunk Steve Marriot from Humple Pie playing in a dive bar off of Sheridan ave. one night in Chicago, doing this tune.

Some expectations if Obama is elected President :

Israel will attack Iranian nuclear facilities due to concerns about the new Obama administration's commitment to Israel.

China will impose a naval blockade on Taiwan in order to "protect itself against rogue elements who want independence".

North Korea will resume nuclear proliferation efforts.

Iranian agents will attempt to take over Iraq and impose a government in Lebanon.

Russia will export nuclear technology and sell advanced arms to regimes unfriendly to the USA. It will convince eastern european countries to withdraw from participation in the nuclear defense shield.

Hugo Chavez will use his country's oil wealth to try and destabilize pro-American Latin American nations.

Obama will be calling Hillary at 3 a.m. to ask her what to do.

By the way, I've figured out how White Sox pitcher Mark Beuhrle is tipping his pitches. If you happen to see any of him pitching on TV, watch his glove as he goes into his pitching motion, then compare that image to whether he throws a fastball of a change up. I bet that within about 4 or 5 pitches you can start calling the pitch before he throws it.

For those who are not familiar with the art of hitting, if you give a major league hitter the advantage of knowing whether a fastball or change up is coming, you might as well just get your bullpen ready now.

DULUTH, Minn. - The driver of a 1997 Honda Civic that struck and killed a dog near Cloquet is suing the dog's owners for damage done to his vehicle.

Jeffery Ely was driving on the night of Jan. 4 when Fester, a miniature pinscher, squeezed past owner Nikki Munthe as she was letting in her other dog and ran out onto the road. Ely's car struck Fester, killing the 13-pound dog instantly.

Now Ely is suing the Munthes for about $1,100 for damage to his car, time he had to take off from his two jobs to get the car repaired, and court fees.

He varies how open the glove is and how fast he pulls the ball out of the glove with the type of pitch.

It's amazing how often you can pick up on thing slike that if you know what to look for. Catchers often tip the pitches too.

Michael Barrett, who caught for the Cubs last year and is cashing checks on the DL for the Padres this year, and is the worst catcher I've ever seen, tipped every pitch he caught. After giving the signal, if it was a breaking ball he would take a little crow hop to the right to set up for the curve, if it was a fastball or change he would stay still. But for the change he would turn the glove so the palm faced upwards, for the fastball the palm faced outwards.

Once you picked up on that, you knew what was coming every time.

Went to so many concerts while I was there much of it's a blur. Used to work security at a lot of shows around town to make a few bucks.

Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani made the comment in his second sermon to large groups of Tehrani Friday prayers

"This sixty-year period has been filled with oppression, discrimination, massacres, homelessness and instability, not only in the occupied Palestine, but also throughout the world," said Rafsanjani.

He added, "Among the worst things that the Israelis have done we can refer to taking away Palestine from its real owners, and imposing homelessness against millions of human beings, having not achieved any of their claimed ideals in Israel, either."

WASHINGTON (AP) - Barack Obama's sprint to the Democratic nomination received another boost Friday as two more superdelegates pledged their support, including one who dropped his backing for Hillary Rodham Clinton's faltering White House bid.
The two Democrats have been lobbying superdelegates—who are not bound by state results—to line up behind them in the final push for the nomination. While Obama has presented himself, albeit subtly, as the inevitable candidate, Clinton's efforts have been to ward off further defections and convince the crucial voting block that her candidacy still retained signs of life.

Obama, a step closer to making history after a strong showing in two state primaries earlier this week, appeared to be more convincing in delivering his message.

On Friday, he picked up two new superdelegates, including one who had previously supported the former first lady, Obama spokesman Dan Pfeiffer said. He had received the backing of two others Thursday, an announcement that came shortly after he made an impromptu, and well- received, appearance in the U.S. House of Representatives

Assuming it was a small nuke and one of them survived to push the button. I've thought for a while that simply aiming a bunch of them at Mecca and making the fact well known might change attitudes quite some little bit.

They could launch from their Submarines, and I'm sure they've planned for such an occasion.

They need sun, and grow 3-4 feet high down here. You will need to stake them. If it gets really hot, they don't flower as much, but then come back real strong in the fall. You have to store them over winter, they'll freeze.

A rocket hit the building housing the British Broadcasting Corporation's Baghdad bureau, causing damage but no injuries.

The rocket hit the roof, damaging equipment and opening a large hole. It was part of a rocket and missile barrage targeting the heavily fortified Green Zone in downtown Baghdad.

Patrick Howse, the BBC bureau chief in Baghdad says Friday that the "rocket struck the roof of the BBC Baghdad bureau. It caused structural damage but no one was injured." He says it left a big hole in the roof, approximately 1 meter by 1.5 meters

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. The s-show that is the Burmese cyclone catastrophe has sunk to new lows. The UN has stopped shipments after the junta seized the two most recent shipments.

The junta couldn't care less about what happens to the Burmese people and there's no reason to believe that the junta will deliver any humanitarian aid to the people in the affected areas. The junta wants to control the process - so that they can remain in power. If the humanitarian aid gets to the people without restriction, the junta loses a stick with which it can club the Burmese people into accepting continued dominion by the junta.

Hugh, if we enact the Fairness Doctrine, you’re going to destroy political discourse in America, whether it be liberal, conservative, or anything else. You require that on your show that every time you voice an opinion that you have to have somebody with an opposite opinion on it, it will destroy the flow of information to the American people. the Founding Fathers foresaw that its exercise would always be
inoffensive to people.

It's what makes us strong: our ability to
hit hard with speech - make people think; defend their ideas. In the
end, some lively provocation is good for everyone.

And nothing says defending great ideas like hardcore pornography!

A few years back there was a movie with that blonde chick---she dated Tom Cruise- Nicole Kidman. Somebody posted (it wasn't a thread) how sick it was that in this film she takes a bath with a ten year old boy. A lot of the usual suspects responded: "It's just a movie-get over it. Don't watch it if (Hot Hollywood sanctioned pedophilia) it bothers you, sheesh.".
Now the same folks are freaked out by Ben Stein's take on eugenics.
It's just a movie, you don't have to watch it or think about it.

Movies I have not seen:
passion of the Christ, Expelled, Nicole Kidman in Jail Bait.

I'm debating a similar strategy... Cut and run (if you will) from NYC...

Although I might be able to stay with my company...

Please leave the city.

Stranger still, he's a Hollywood Republican. Morning Lizards!

Yup. He used to hang out with the dead Ramone (Johnny or Joey, I forget) who was also a big GOP supporter.

One of the best actchers out ther that I see, and I kd you not, is this young catcher the Cubs have, Soto.

Forget about his bat, (which is pretty good) watch him work behind the plate. He is like a surgeon back there. His footwork and technique is almost perfect, and he does a lot of little things back there to help his pitcher out. He's great working the umpires too.

Going back to my thoughts on the pitcher Hughes for a second, Hughes also throws from the exact same spot on the rubber all the time. He needs to learn to move around on the rubber a bit, shift to the right to give his curve a sharper angle on a right handed hitter, shift the the left to give his fastball a better chance of catching the outside corner. Those types of things.
