Hizballah Takes Over Beirut

Fri, May 9, 2008 at 9:28:44 am PDT

The media don’t want to use the words “civil war,” but there’s very little doubt that Lebanon is in the midst of one: Hezbollah imposes control on Beirut.

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Lebanon’s Iranian-backed Hezbollah group took control of the Muslim half of Beirut on Friday, tightening its grip on the city in a major blow to the U.S.-backed government.

Security sources said at least 11 people had been killed and 30 wounded in three days of battles between pro-government gunmen and fighters loyal to Hezbollah, a Shi’ite political movement with a powerful guerrilla army.

The fighting, the worst internal strife since the 1975-90 civil war, was triggered this week after the government took decisions targeting Hezbollah’s military communications network. The group said the government had declared war.

In scenes reminiscent of the darkest days of the civil war, young men armed with assault rifles roamed the streets amid smashed cars and smoldering buildings. Fighting died down by mid-morning and Hezbollah and allied fighters were in control as government supporters put down their weapons.

And Reuters has cameramen embedded with the enemy again: Mideast Conflict Photos.

(Not the least of which is the fact that Reuters is embedded with the enemy, yet again.)

Iranian proxy war -- and Israel is next. If the US doesn't bomb Iran soon, the Israelis will have no choice but to try it themselves.

Why would poor dear Hezballah do such a deed? Well, the answer is obvious, ain't it?

To protect Lebanon against the rasically Israelis and Americans, of course!

This is not a civil war. It's a war fought by Iranian proxies. In other words, it's an invasion by an imperial power.

Not good. At all.

Israel Radio has just reported that Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Saniora (pictured) will resign tonight.

The report comes from two television stations, NBN and an Iranian station. In return, Hezbullah will withdraw its forces from Beirut.

Next, Hizbullshit will start attacking Israel, and then go crying to the UN when Israel fights back. Assuming Olmerde has grown a pair since the last time. Or he gets voted out and Bibi takes over.

Does this mean Iran has a bomb and is trying to get an excuse to use it (as if they need one)?

There was a time when the PLO was about to take over Beirut and Lebanon. This guy( I forgot his name) from a country ( That has since lost it's way in the wilderness ) near by that drove it's military into Beirut, forcing the PLO onto ferries and out to sea. Those were the days my friends?

When the media uses the tern "US Backed government", then it's "media-speak" for a government which the media supports it's over-throw.

I think a very sick derangement of the MSM is that they're so politically correct that they actually look for and feed off of any opportunity that allows them to express how PC they are. They won't call Hezbollah

terrorists

because they know they can score humanitarian points with the American general public if they portray Hezbollah as some sort of misunderstood group with good intentions. In the meantime, these groups become more powerful and make themselves seem more legitimate to which the MSM is more than happy to oblige by giving their "officers" official titles. By then these groups have gained plenty of financial and moral support from their neighboring middle arabic countries and it becomes a full fledged international incident.

Realistically, isn't this just making explicit what was long since known? Lebanon is not a real state, just a puppet under the thumb of Iran and Syria (to mix metaphors). There can only be plusses from this being open, assuming the media informs the world about it.

It does make Obama's desire to speak to the masters in Iran... interesting. The sine qua non of Hezb'Allah is the will to power, the domination of people based on force. Since the Iranians are destroying the freedom of the Lebanese, ignoring for a moment all of their other acts, what exactly is there to talk about?

From WSJ "BAGHDAD -- The U.S. military on Friday denied Iraqi government claims that the leader of al Qaeda in Iraq was captured and said a man with a similar name had been arrested in the northern city of Mosul."

"Neither coalition forces nor Iraqi security forces detained or killed Abu Ayyub al-Masri. This guy had a similar name," said Maj. Peggy Kageleiry, a U.S. military spokeswoman in northern Iraq. She said no additional details were being immediately provided.

At this point in time, Syria itself is no longer independent of Iran. It's foreign policy is being dictated by the Iranians.

Like Pre-WWII Germany, Iran is in a win-win position until they lose big.
Dominance is their geostrategic goal, and destroying Israel is their millenarian goal. Their machinations wind up destabilizing Lebanon and Syria. Their machinations combined with American and Israeli stupidity destabilize both America and Israel. Hezbollah is a weapon aimed at Lebanon in the short term, Israel in the medium term, and Syria in the long term. Every time Syria "asserts its influence" over Lebanon via Hezbollah, all they are doing is slipping further into the grip of their Imperial masters in Tehran.

The question is--which motivation is stronger? Geopolitical or Millenarian? If the Mullahs have it, they attempt to destroy Israel and win the Arab/Islamic* dominance game. The region would have to kiss the ring in Tehran. But if the Iranian policy class wins out, they do everything but attack Israel, letting the fox lead the hounds into subservience to Iran. If your goal is to train the hounds, you are happy to let the fox go.

And if Israel or America strikes Iran without crippling them in several respects, they actually profit by the attack in the regional dominance struggle.

America or Israel must lance this boil, or we shall face the consequences. Never mind the Iranian bomb--the real threat is Iranian hegemony.

*Obviously, Iran is not an Arab country. But most of the Muslim countries to their west are.

Hizballah seizes Western Beirut from Lebanese Army

An update on this story, and things are going downhill fast. "Hezbollah militias assume control of western Beirut," from CNN, May 9:

BEIRUT, Lebanon (CNN) -- Western Beirut fell under the control of opposition Hezbollah militias Friday in what amounted to an army-negotiated surrender of pro-government positions, Lebanese Internal Security Forces and Western military observers said.

The "dramatic development" is a major blow to the democratically elected and pro-Western government of Lebanon, CNN's Brent Sadler said.

Soldiers went to several offices of pro-government political parties in western Beirut overnight, he said. They persuaded pro-government gunmen who had battled Hezbollah militants to leave the offices as the opposition forces hovered nearby, he said.

Druze leader Walid Jumblatt, part of the pro-government coalition, said the government was "now at the end of a gun barrel" and they expect the "conditions for surrender will be offered sooner or later," Sadler reported.

"I think ... it's a coup," Jumblatt told CNN in a phone interview. "The Lebanese army is in total paralysis."

Rather than fight, the army has stayed above the fray. With its own political factions, taking sides could throw the military into disarray.

With pro-government gunmen out of the way, the fighting in the capital eased at bit Friday after intense gunbattles the previous two days echoed through Beirut's streets.

At least 11 people have been killed and 44 wounded in the clashes since Wednesday, according to Lebanese Internal Security Forces.

The developments came as two pro-government television stations -- Future TV and al-Ekhbariya TV -- ceased operations Friday.

They went off the air after being threatened by government opponents in Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed Shiite Muslim militia, and Amal, a major Shiite party in Lebanon, according to Nadim Mounla, head of Future TV.

"Early this morning, many armed militiamen were in the surroundings of the Future television headquarters and they have sent us a very clear message: 'Either you shut off or (we're going to) destroy the premises,'" Mounla said.

The television stations are owned by the Hariri family, supporters of the country's pro-Western, Sunni-led government. In addition, the building housing the Hariri-owned al-Mustaqbal newspaper came under fire overnight. No injuries were reported.

The Hariri compound in western Beirut came under fire Friday. Security sources said rocket-propelled grenades slammed into the wall surrounding the residence.

Saad Hariri, the leader of the government's bloc in parliament, is the son of the late former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, whose 2005 assassination sparked protests that brought the current government to power and led to the withdrawal of Syrian troops.

Hariri and Jumblatt were besieged Friday in their residences in Muslim western Beirut, The Associated Press reported, while Prime Minister Fuad Saniora was believed to be under protection at his downtown office.

Or as if we had no business taking sides for the legitimate government and against the murderous, foreign-backed invaders (who also happen to be our long-since declared enemy).

Normally I can ignore it, but I am so saddened by what's happening in Lebanon - again - that I just HAD to state my disgust and contempt for those MSM creeps who almost invariably insist on promoting the cause of evil.

That was the point of one of my above posts.

They say it as if supporting a quasi-democratic government is a bad thing.

They need to give the looney left their talking points.

There will be silence on the left until Dinnerjacket and the MSM come up with the talking points for them.

Not sure that the US has stopped selective removal of #$%^heads, just that its not being publicized. Something about "Fear of the unknown?"

Such incidents should be 100% publicized. People like Nasrallah should be taken out publicly as graphically as possible, inflicting massive casualties and when asked, we should respond "HELL YES, WE KILLED HIM! ANYONE ELSE?"

I'm talking cruise missiles at "Death to America" rallies and MOABs with fuel/air bombs and bunker busters on their strong holds. Extremely graphic overkill. When one of them "disappears" they spin it into a legend and make him a martyr. When they die badly, it sends a message that we will find you and kill you.

If I understand the situation correctly Killgore, the problem with the Lebanese "Army" is that it is full of factions, many of whom are Muslim and support what's going on in Lebanon right now. The idea that the very poorly trained and equipped Lebanese Army could, even without factions, stop this "uprising" by the extremely well trained and well equipped Hezbollah "insurgents" is merely sad.
But it is also a WARNING to Israel - fighting Hezobollah will NOT be like fighting the Egyptians, the Jordanians or the Syrians as they have in the past. Hezbollah is better equipped and trained than probably any "army" in the region, short of Israels. And I include Iran's army in that as well.

It is ironic that the folks that strongly support Darwinism and Natural Selection (the academics) are usually for pro peace, dialogue, understanding ... while the fundamentalist Islamists are arming and scheming...and taking over and buying the academia (as noted in LGF quite a few times) and financial sectors with oil money....is this Natural Selection at work?

True.

And I think the people who say that think that Europe is still Christian.

No. Not at all. Hell, most evangelicals know that over half the population of the US doesn't even go to church! So it's not being misinformed; actually the evangelical crowd (myself included) are carefully watching world events unfold, but the really is a substantial pro-Israel presence still in the country, the bulk of it seen in the larger evangelical settings (the followers of the much hated Hagee, Robertson, and the late Falwell, just to name a few). Now while some may look at these folks as crackpots, and not all are, the truth is they have SUBSTANTIAL resources. Hell, translations of Revelations intimate that the US is gonna be a minor player anyway, so Israels help from us may come by way of the private sector. Who knows?

284 Bill K.  Fri, May 9, 2008 10:16:09am

This is the direct result of that half-assed "war" against Hizbollah that Olmert and the Bush Administration fought in 2006. The enemy was not defeated and not demoralized. They laid low, licked their wounds and waited for the next chance to take over Lebanon.

The deluded fools in the Olmert and Bush Administrations who thought that the UN would relieve them of the necessity of fighting a proper have got exactly what they hoped would not happen. A Lebanon dominated by Iran.

These stupid bastards in the West are sickening. Both Israel and the United States could have easily defeated Hizbollah, Syria and Iran but are too cowardly to do so. What are they going to do when the nuclear weapons start falling on Israel?

A few questions for those more knowledgeable about Lebanon:

Isn't the U.N. supposed to have troops there, preventing this from happening?

I fully realize that the U.N. troops are completely useless, but are they still there? I never heard anything about them leaving, however, that doesn't mean it didn't happen.

If they are still there, what are they doing?

Or more accurately:

What are their excuses?

Peg, it's worse than you can imagine. Here's a portion of yesterday's State Dept. briefing. In the entire briefing, Iran is not mentioned once. Here's the US view of the Leb. Army:

QUESTION: Can we move to Lebanon? How concerned are you about the street fighting that we’re seeing there? It seems to have escalated today?

MR. MCCORMACK: Well, you know, it’s a -- certainly, as we are watching this unfold, it is a source of concern for us. I’m sure that it is even -- an even greater source of concern for the Lebanese people who have, once again, seen their daily lives interrupted by the actions of Hezbollah, who are, one could say, engaged in cynical acts of manipulation in provoking these kinds of confrontations and using violence to try to achieve their political ends in Lebanon.

So again, we have full confidence in the ability of the Lebanese Government. It is simply working to exercise sovereignty over all of Lebanon. It is simply looking to provide those basic things that the Lebanese people expect from their government: security, governmental institutions that function; an airport that is open so that they can travel, come and go as they please. These are all things that are being hampered at the current time by Hezbollah.

Rice should be immediately dismissed for total incompetence.

We showed in Afghanistan, in a very real way, that we can kick ass and take names and still manage to avoid a great deal of truly innocent civilian deaths.

So we will do everything possible and create a 'Palestinian' State, or two maybe, Gaza, West Bank, or how about three, the Arabs of Israel are restless too.

No chance at all these numerous new States will be under Iranian influence. No sir, none at all.

306 Arbalest  Fri, May 9, 2008 10:33:50am

There is a chance that this is the way Hizballah ends. Hizballah has guns and money, but less support than most people believe; this coup proves it.

Hizballah had seriously abused the locals in Southern Lebanon before they provoked the Israeli response, and hid behind the local during the fighting. Word of this got around.

Further, Nasrallah is a moron. Recall his words of surprise at the Israeli response to his kidnapping, and his justification of his actions; he sounds like a 9 year-old.

My guess is that Nasrallah’s Iranian masters want to see some sort of return on their money (real soon now), but Nasrallah realizes that he cannot attack Israel again, at least not just yet. With his support in Lebanon dwindling, Nasrallah’s position has been weakening over the last year.

I speculate that an attack on Israel is now less likely. First, the IDF could reach Beirut in several days and my guess is that only severely die-hard Hizballah partisans would oppose the IDF. The rest of the Lebanese population would view Israel as a liberator. Second, the UN buffer zone keeps Israel at bay, if only for political reasons, but it does keep Israel from simply deciding to roll in and spank Nasrallah again.

Nasrallah has to do something to keep power and to keep his masters happy. How about a coup? It would remove opposition and perhaps even gain a way out from control by his Iranian masters.

There were an assortment of claims after the end of fighting that Hizballah was the rightful representative of the Lebanese people (but, curiously, no one could remember an election). Watch for these claims to resurface.

A deal with Hizbalah, to spare many deaths, seems possible, but I think many Lebanese are tiring of Hizballah (and they know what Nasrallah will do to their country), and really don’t want to see Lebanon go the way of Gaza.

The problem is that Nasrallah will slowly turn Lebanon into Gaza, and everyone knows it.

If Nasrallah fails this time (again), I think that a lot of external funding will end, and this should end Hizballah.

This failure of Nasrallah's has to be caused by the Lebanese themselves.

The penalty for allowing Nasrallah's success is life in Gaza II.

re: #302 Son of the Black Dog This is quite true. But I've been out of the Army for over 30 years now (although there are nights when I'm still in it) and it's my understanding that the Army was going towards
Maneuver Brigades in lieu of "Divisions" for a long time now - certainly since 2000 if not before. I don't pretend to understand why.
But I do think that Bush seriously erred when he decided against more Armor and more Air-Mobile Divisions (or the equivalent number of Brigades)
waaay back before 9/11). But the one thing that hasn't really been rendered as "Over-stretched" is our air power, especially from the Navy. And I suspect, unless we do leave Iraq or Afghanistan or we do radically and quickly increase our Active Duty troops, it's gonna be Air Power - and specifically Naval Air Power that will do in Hezbollah, Iran and Syria.
Course, I was only a lowly infantry corporal (paygrade, my actual rank has apparently been disgarded!) so I could be wrong about those things.

John Bolton: Bomb, Bomb Iran
By Investor's Business Daily | Posted Wednesday, May 07, 2008 4:20 PM PT

Middle East: Former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton says we should take out Iranian camps that train Iraqi insurgents. Not a bad idea. Besides denying our enemies sanctuary, it might give pause to Iran's nuclear ambitions.

As much as we hate the lefties comparing Iraq to Vietnam, there are things that do give one a sense of deja vu. Once again we see an enemy able to keep fighting, supplied by those who use a line on a map to protect them.

In remarks reported by the London Telegraph, John Bolton advocated an end to the policy of allowing the Quds Force of Iran's Revolutionary Guards to openly operate training camps run by personnel from Lebanon's branch of Hezbollah to train fighters from anti-government Iraqi militias.

Ending the policy would be provocative, as Bolton acknowledged, and Hezbollah has the capability to stir up trouble around the world, even in this hemisphere. But they'll eventually come after us even if we don't. Kicking the can down the road doesn't work any more than it did when the Allies failed to respond to the horse-drawn infantry of Adolf Hitler when his troops re-entered the demilitarized Rhineland of 1936.

Bolton noted the risk of a hostile response by Iran and/or its puppet, Hezbollah, but said the damage inflicted by Iran would be "far higher" if Washington continued to take no action. "This is a case where the use of military force against a training camp to show the Iranians we're not going to tolerate this is really the most prudent thing to do," he said. "Then the ball would be in Iran's court to draw the appropriate lesson to stop harming our troops."

The bombing of the Iranian training camps would also be a prudent shot across the bow regarding Iran's nuclear ambitions. A few cruise missiles would put Iran's loony leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on notice that next time it might be a squadron of B-2s armed with bunker buster bombs.

The first reports of Iranian involvement in training Iraqi insurgents emerged in March 2007 with the capture by U.S. forces of Qais Khazali, the senior Special Groups leader for Iraq, and Ali Mussa Daqduq, a senior Lebanese Hezbollah commander captured with him near Basra.

Last Monday, Col. David Bacon, a spokesman for the coalition in Baghdad, told reporters: "Ali Mussa Daqduq confirmed Lebanese Hezbollah were providing training to Iraqi Special Group members in Iran and that his role was to assess the quality of training and make recommendations on how the training could be improved."

In May 2006, Daqduq traveled to Tehran to meet with senior Quds Force officials and observe members of the special groups in training. "In this role," Bacon said, "he traveled to Iraq on four occasions and was captured on his fourth trip." The main camp is located near the town of Jalil Azad, near Tehran.

In congressional testimony last year, Gen. David Petraeus said: "It is increasingly apparent to both coalition and Iraqi leaders that Iran, through the use of the Quds Force, seeks to turn the Iraqi special groups into a Hezbollah-like force to serve its interests and fight a proxy war against the Iraqi state and coalition forces in Iraq."

Iran has supplied not only training but advance weaponry such as explosively formed penetrators, a high-tech version of the roadside bombs that can penetrate U.S. armor. It has also provided Shiite militia groups with 107-millimeter rockets and the launchers for firing them, as well as 122-millimeter mortars.

In March, Petraeus placed the blame squarely on Iran for the barrage of rockets that struck the Green Zone, adding that the groups that carried out the attack were funded and trained by the Quds Force.

This has gone on long enough. As Bolton suggests, it may be time to kick the tires and light the fires.

Of course Charles is the rare exception to this....

"Natural selection" , like gravity and rust, never sleeps. It's easiest victims for extinction are those that are unaware of the reality around them, like the hundreds of millions who died as a result of competing ideologies during the past century. If the government, at this point, isn't strong enough to protect their own media outlets, they're pretty close to capitulation, whether they intend to formally surrender or not.

Valentine, it's time to go. Grab your passport, money, any medicines you need, anything that can be used as a bribe (but nothing bulky, that will weigh you down), and go.

If you have a spare rifle and ammo lying around, that might come in handy too. In fact, that is the most important accessory IMHO, as terrorist season is now open with no limit.

Reuters keeps making the same damn spelling mistake-

UN -backed government

not US.

You would think Reuters was trying to give Hezbollah legitimacy.

A rant from a close friend:

You're with us or you're with the terrorists, unless you're a Syrian and Iranian-backed Islamist organization undermining one democracy and seeking to exterminate the population of another.

When Teddy Roosevelt said to speak softly, he didn't mean to use mush and drivel; he meant that if you were carrying a big enough stick, there's no need to shout.

Instead, here's what we get from our increasingly emasculated president:

The White House said Hezbollah must "stop their disruptive activities" while the UN Security Council appealed for calm.

"Hezbollah needs to make a choice: Be a terrorist organisation or be a political party, but quit trying to be both," said US national security council spokesman Gordon Johndroe."

Umm, didn't Hezbollah make that choice a long time ago? Didn't the State Dept. designate them as a terrorist organization? They just seized half of a sovereign country by force, and the best we get from this administration is a call for soul searching and navel gazing?

As Nazi warplanes dive-bombed over Poland, and tanks rolled over the border, Mr. Roosevelt's spokesman said "Germany needs to make a choice: Be a genocidal, totalitarian empire, or be a democratically elected republic, but quit trying to be both."

I can't wait for Condamnesia's mutterings over at State.

And an Oracle Concerning Damascus

re: #300 realwest

You know, I've noticed that you and I agree on most things (judging by the dings up and down we both seem to give to the same comments) but I'm surprised a little at your comment.
As I said, I've got no quarrel with the idea - and indeed STRONGLY believe in killing the "head choppers" EVERYWHERE - not just in Lebanon, but it's the idea of killing thousands of Non-Head Choppers that I am against.
We showed in Afghanistan, in a very real way, that we can kick ass and take names and still manage to avoid a great deal of truly innocent civilian deaths.
And as far as I'm concerned, while that is still true, that should be the course we should follow.

i don't think we're in disagreement. i'm not advocating harming innocent people. i agree w/ you abt. afghanistan. some of those people saved the life of marcus luttrell who wrote abt. it in his book "lone survivor". he was the only navy seal in a party of 10 who made it out alive after being ambushed by 100 taliban. he describes how the local afghans took him in, nursed him and refused to give him up time after time when the taliban came to kill him. it is a very moving story.
when i talk abt. fighting a war to win and not to be perceived of as "nice" i'm to the point where we accept we need to survive and all the other ideas give way to the knowledge that surviving includes force that will result in collateral damage and we don't want it to be ours. i don't think we are quit there yet but the day appears to be approaching.

I'm sure Obama and Rev. Wright could straighten this mess in Lebanon out quick, fast, and right away if they were put in charge for a couple of days.

Hope! Change!

intelligence agencies have long suspected that Iran has an important SIGINT site in Beirut, and that hub is likely hard-wired into the new network.

re: #272 Ma Sands

1) Where does that avatar picture of yours come from? --meaning, who is the guy.....?

2) Your comment is a bit too positive.....according to God's Book, it is here for the duration, and plays quite a role in what is to come, soon.....

the picture is supposed to be Charles (The Hammer) Martel at the battle of Tours, pushing the Moslems out of France and back into Spain in 732.

As to the end days, I'm not a believer - I think we will be slogging it out down here for a long time to come.

This is depressing. Why does the bad guys always seem to win in the Middle East?

re: #354 hammerspawn

Thanks for replying. That picture had reminded me of the Nordic one, of the ladies in armor carrying the dead warriors across the front of their horses' saddles --Valkyries, I believe I was told, a few weeks ago, here.....

About your prediction of a long time..........all I know with certainty, is that I am to watch.....and that, with God, a day could be as a thousand years, and vice versa --and He did say He would wrap it all up, soon..... :)

357 Ma Sands  Fri, May 9, 2008 5:23:28pm

re: #355 bopone

It will seem that way......but it is part of an intricately woven plan by the best strategist --and, in the end, it'll all come out right..........those able to trust that, will be at peace in their innermost beings, as well as being able to be useful within that plan..... :)

Lizards,

I hate to speculate on this but this could be the real and scary ass ember that starts the world burning again. The only question is will the world respond with force to end militant Islam or will it stand readily by in the name of pacifism as France and Britain did when Hitler re-occupied the Rhineland.

Dinner jacket wants to bring about the apocalypse for the hidden Mahdi and this may be the proxy beginning of his efforts.

Obama, drop yer waffle.

This is very very bad news. Hizballah Will take over Lebanon, suppress the Christians, and force them out of Lebanon.

re: #358 Areopagitica

You may be right.

I definitely see this not just as an assault against Lebanon, but against the US as well.
