AP Discovers Terrorism

Fri, May 9, 2008 at 10:14:24 am PDT

How do you get the Associated Press to use the word “terrorism” in an article without scare quotes?

Simple. Just distort the meaning of the word so badly that it’s unrecognizable. Bam! No scare quotes! Vietnam to try American for terrorism.

HANOI, Vietnam - A Vietnamese-American and two Vietnamese nationals will be put on trial on charges of terrorism for allegedly planning to distribute anti-government pamphlets in Vietnam, an official said Thursday.

This is about more than the MSM misusing the word terrorism. The real story here is how tin-pot dictatorships across the world plan to abuse the word terrorism out of all usefulness. They will proudly claim to be "anti-terrorism" on the floor of the U.N. while crushing dissent at home by re-defining "terrorism" to mean anything that threatens their rule.

6 Sharmuta  Fri, May 9, 2008 10:17:31am

I'm sure the irony of distributing anti-government literature is lost on the American left.

7 TalkinKamel  Fri, May 9, 2008 10:17:38am

Anti-communist Vietnamese are one of the few minority groups the AP, and other MSM outlets, are willing to say a discouraging word about.

Have they mentioned Hezbollah's take over of Lebanon yet?

(Feeling very angry right now.)

12 Thanos  Fri, May 9, 2008 10:19:15am

Well with the AP being Mostly Marxists, it's not terrorism unless it happens against one of the forms of govt' they consider legitimate and not evil, such as communism. They would be happy writing the same article about terrorism against Stalin's Russis, or Mao's China.

/Get real, anything that questions Karl (M not R) is Terrorism.

13 bosforus  Fri, May 9, 2008 10:19:28am

Perfect AP logic! Americans who hand out pamphlets = terrorists!
Muslims who blow themselves up inside pizza restaurants crowded with women and children = freedom fighting warriors!

16 WrathofG-d  Fri, May 9, 2008 10:20:53am

re: #6 Sharmuta

Maybe this is a good thing.

I imagine that if in Vietnam "handing out anti-Goverment pamphlets" is "Terrorism", then it would be "Terrorism" here in the U.S. too.

Logically, that would make the ISM, A.N.S.W.E.R., World Can't Wait, and the other Socialist/Terrorist-Supporting organizations and participants....TERRORISTS.

33 SpringheelJack  Fri, May 9, 2008 10:26:57am

Just like "it's only racism if White folks do it", true terrorism can only be performed if an American does it against a despotic Communist or Islamic dictatorship

34 Sharmuta  Fri, May 9, 2008 10:26:58am

re: #16 WrathofG-d

That's my point (which I didn't state very well). They already think they're living in a police state, yet continue to espouse the views of people who actually do impose a police state. It wouldn't register with them that the activities they're engaged in would be considered "terrorism" by the very people they promote.

I highly doubt we'll see any leftists crying that for these Vietnamese, dissent is patriotic, thus they are showing support for Vietnam. It's only patriotic for American leftists because it doesn't land them in jail.

Edgar Eusebio Millan Gomez, the public face of Mexico's offensive against drug crime, became the highest-ranking policeman to be killed since the launch of the effort 17 months ago. His murder could give new confidence to drug cartels blamed for 6000 killings in the past 2½ years.

HOLY GRIM MILESTONE BATMAN!

And how does the Mexican Government react;

The President, Felipe Calderon, on Thursday called Mr Millan Gomez a hero and his assassination a cowardly act. He vowed to redouble efforts to crush cartels and has asked US Congress to approve a $US1.4 billion ($1.48 billion) counter-narcotics aid package for Mexico.

New Delhi, 9 May (AKI) - India is developing nuclear submarine technology and will soon float global tenders for the construction of six conventional submarines equipped with surface-to-surface missiles, Navy chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta said on Friday.

The submarines for which tenders would be floated could also have vertical missile launch capabilities, Mehta stated.

"The nuclear powered submarines could be equipped either with nuclear or conventional weapons, he said.

The nuclear submarine project was being developed by the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO), he added.

The DRDO is a network of more than 50 laboratories carrying out research to develop defence technologies.

The Indian Navy at present has 16 submarines in its fleet and is reportedly looking to lease Akula class nuclear powered submarines from Russia.

Just a couple of months ago a local professor initiated proceedings to strip a graduate student of his TA fellowship because he was indulging in terrorism. The word has been used over and over and over during the controversy.
His crime? He had a 9x12 frame on his desk with a collage of pictures including pix of his parents, his dog, scenery from his home, and (I shudder to say it!) a picture of his girlfriend in a shorts. There was nothing the least bit immodest about her attire.....unless you're a Wahabbi......but I'm afraid the girl was very pretty. That picture, BTW, was about 2x3 inches.

Unfortunately, the Vietnamese government is starting its own smear campaign of fabricating stories of Viet Tan members smuggling firearms into the country for terrorism purposes, and it’s sickening to see that despite the advent of the internet, a regime controlling all media in the country can still portrait a picture of their liking regardless of any relevance for truth.

And by spreading negative information about this story, the AP plays right into the communists' hands. Typical MSM bullshit.

Typical MSM bullshit.

When hasn't that been the case? I saw it first hand, and got the media version second hand. It was a mystery to me why 'we' (meaning the folks back home) weren't getting the straight scoop.

Somewhere along the way, journalists decided they were more comfortable being Leftists and hating America than being objective disseminators of the truth.

Well I'm off to lunch. Hope I don't run in to any pamphlets, I might not return.

We should all arm ourselves with one of those poles with a nail on the end.

Handing out pamphlets is terrorism?

Yes, but killing Israelis is not - according to the MSM

Hey AP, go indepth, tell the whole story and print the truth - not the communist propaganda line.

Vietnamese government to bring to trial democracy activists Nguyen Quoc Quan, Somsak Khunmi and Nguyen The Vu

Nearly six months ago on November 17, 2007, security police in Saigon arrested members and supporters of Viet Tan as they were preparing to distribute leaflets promoting democracy through non-violent means. On November 19, Viet Tan issued a press release on the arrest of three members—American citizens Nguyen Quoc Quan and Leon Truong and French citizen Nguyen Thi Thanh Van—and of two supporters—Thai resident Somsak Khunmi and Vietnamese citizen Nguyen The Vu. On November 20, security police arrested a third supporter of Viet Tan, Vietnamese citizen Nguyen Viet Trung.

A full five days after Viet Tan’s statement, communist authorities publicly acknowledged the arrests. At the same time, security police pretended to find a gun in the checked baggage of two Vietnamese American tourists—Le Van Phan and Nguyen Thi Thinh—at the airport in Saigon and announced that this couple was allegedly connected with Viet Tan. In the following days and weeks, official state media accused the Viet Tan democracy activists of being “terrorists.”

The arrests by Vietnamese authorities of individuals engaging in peaceful political expression sparked strong protests from governments in the United States, France, Australia, Norway and Switzerland along with many international human rights groups including Human Rights Watch, Reporters Sans Frontieres, Committee to Protect Journalists and Rafto Foundation.

Due to international pressure, the Hanoi government was compelled to release Leon Truong on December 11 and journalist Nguyen Thi Thanh Van (whose broadcast name is Thanh Thao) on the following day. The couple who were framed with the gun and had no relation to Viet Tan were quietly released on December 11. Over four months after the arrests, authorities also released Nguyen Viet Trung on April 4, 2008. After nearly six months of detention, restrictions against visits by family members and their respective consulates, communist authorities will charge the three remaining Viet Tan democracy activists with “terrorism” in a closed-door trial on May 13. We affirm that:

%u2022 Viet Tan is committed to achieving democratic change through peaceful, non-violent means. The activities of Viet Tan’s members and supporters are consistent with this guiding mission. We reject all the fabrications and charges by the Hanoi regime.

%u2022 During their detention and heavy-handed interrogation by security police any so-called confessions by the defendants have no credibility.

%u2022 The legal system in Vietnam is entirely under the control of the Vietnamese Communist Party and all decisions by the court are pre-determined according to political considerations. Therefore, we reject the legitimacy of the trial on May 13 against the Viet Tan democracy activists.

%u2022 Viet Tan will continue to rally public opinion from inside the country and abroad to demand the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners held by the Hanoi regime.
