McCain on O'Reilly 2

Fri, May 9, 2008 at 5:20:39 pm PDT

The second part of Bill O’Reilly’s interview with John McCain is airing shortly; last night’s first installment wasn’t exactly our most popular political thread ever, so why not double down?

That's what O'Reilly DOES! He has a "show" which is all about Bill O'Reilly, a monologue with a "guest" who is allowed to sit there and look pretty and maybe get in a few words, while Mr. Bill bends his fingers off counting down his own talking points.

/ why I don't watch BO

I tired of O'Reilly, Geraldo doesn't help his case. Both of them hugely flawed and both trying to advocate moral positions for everyone else.

o'reilly is big on trying to make young people feel guilty for "mistakes!" that don't fit the norm and telling them society will shun them. IMO he pays off his mistakes to hide them.

Geraldo is just a fabricator. He thinks no one wants to work in a packing plant so immigrants have to do it to save all the rest of us. False. worked in a packing plant and it was a good paying job. Until the company built a closed compound for cheap Mexican labor and imported them with the purpsose of breaking the union and lowering wages. Thanks Armand Hammer. Geraldo never really knows the depth of his topic. He wants quick air time.

That being said, and I know I am going to catch hell for this, I am still going to hold my nose and vote for him. The idea of Obama as POTUS, and in charge of picking two maybe three Supreme Court justices terrifies me. If the type of socialists judges he said he will pick get in you can't get rid of them. Too dangerous for me to think, after four years Conservatives can take over. The damage done will be too great. I can't take that chance. Oh, lets not forget his National Security ideas..............

However, the Islamists will do more and worse to innocents who are not soldiers. Heck, they blow up their own children and teach their very young to kill and maim. Yet, as the POTUS he must consider this and leave his personal experience aside for the good of the many.

re: #130 x-ray

Both are important. As I was commenting on Sirius radio tonight, the President gets to nominate for the Supreme Court, and that's a pretty big deal. It still has to get through Congress, but if you've got a D as President, you're going to end up with a lefty nominee without doubt. If McCain wins, you're much more likely to end up with a nominee who holds at least some conservative credentials- unless they're stealth candidates like Souter. Even Kennedy was nominated by Reagan, and has turned into the swing vote after O'Connor (another Reagan nominee) retired as the key swing vote.

Holding on to the seats the GOP has is critical, but with stupidity reigning, no way to know that will happen.

Ancient Chinese proverb time 'eh? Sorry, but none of that matters to the Obamaics... those that end up voting, that is. Most don't care about foreign policy and what is going on in kreplachistan. They see slogans of hope and change that's that.

Of course, someone else pointed out (can't remember who) - but Obama's pretty much setting up a McGovernite coalition - which could result in major loss in November. He's banking on youth vote (never a good idea - heck, Obama girl couldn't be bothered to vote for Obama in the primary). Democrats who aren't African American didn't vote for him. Hispanics didn't vote for him. He didn't win the big electoral college states. And yet, the media is going to anoint him as the nominee and will do all they can to ensure a November win.

I think the truth will be a harsh mistress. Of course, McCain isn't a prize, but he's a league better than either Obama or Hillary.

re: #217 Spiny Norman

A few years ago it used to be worse. Every channel used the same format: get two (or more) guests with opposing views and let them yell over each other. The only serious news on tv is the Leahr report on PBS. They spend 10 minutes on a subject others would cover in 45 seconds. It's actual news.

221 KSK  Fri, May 9, 2008 7:06:53pm

On German TV a political discussion between invited guests will take at least 30 minutes and the moderator will make sure that nobody starts yelling.

But I think the coolest thing I ever saw was a well known female moderator who had invited a German ex-minister who wrote a stupid book about the "CIA involvement in 9/11". He was supposed to be her guest for 30 minutes but was only talking conspiracy troofer nonsense. After 10 minutes she told him that he had only nonsense to say and nothing of substance he should leave and come back when he had anything to prove his allegations. Basically threw him out and he left like a wet poodle, as we say.

Her team did have to struggle somewhat to fill the remaining 20 minutes :-)

re: #220 Killgore Trout

A few years ago it used to be worse. Every channel used the same format: get two (or more) guests with opposing views and let them yell over each other. The only serious news on tv is the Leahr report on PBS. They spend 10 minutes on a subject others would cover in 45 seconds. It's actual news.

It makes amusing soundbites for talk radio the following day, though.

Democrats overjoyed that the Maverick is out on "hip" t.v. shows trying to act young-er and "with it", and failing. Barry the Messiah has got the zit cream contingent already wrapped up, and many of them, like last time, won't vote.

Some one should tell Maverick that this year it might actually pay to appear Presidential and maybe have some of that Reagan grace when it comes to the matter of his age and acting it. Think statesman and real leader, vs. the smooth-talking inexperienced huckster with shady buddies candidate he is going to be running against.

Poor pandering is always the worse pandering.

last night’s first installment wasn’t exactly our most popular political thread ever

Which is a shame, because there was a truly excellent post on that thread.

In fact, why don't I quote it:

Seizing the Northeast corner of Saudi Arabia would have have been far easier. The Saudis deserved it far ore, after 911 and their vicious export of their homegrown terror and intolerant religious screed to these and other Western shores.

It would have been easy to hold, being largely empty save foreigners who actually work the wells and pump the oil, and sent a message that we are not to be trifled with, that we need oil and do not tolerate terrorism on American soil. The rest of the oil soaked kingdoms and kleptocracies would have fallen in line, and Iran would likely have been sufficiently chastened to mind its P's and Q's and put aside any dreams of nuclear hegemony of the gulf- because WE would have been the gulf hegemon.

Instead, we fought and continue to fight what is widely perceived as an inappropriate war against a buffoon who posed little direct threat to us. And what's more, we fought it with both eyes on the arab street, pussyfooting around mosques while our boys got picked off two and ten at a time by savages with AK's and a Iranian IED's.

So here we sit, the American taxpayer funding, with blood and treasure, the reconstruction of Iraq even as its oil receipts swell to bursting, and, with oil at 120 and likely to go higher, the Saudi coffers overflowing with monies to fund their intolerant religion's further expansion, while the President dances humiliating sword dances with them even as they laugh at him for having to beg them to lower prices and increase production.

But don't worry. Until his last day in office, this idiot president will keep trying to push the point of the arab spear, that is to say, the 'palestinians', into Israel's very heart. That will perhaps make the Saudis hate us a tiny bit less.

What I neglected to mention, is that Bush effectively torpedoed the Republicans by fighting the war the Saudis wanted fought, the way they wanted it fought, instead of fighting th war we needed the way we needed it fought.

With all his defects, I believe McCain understands this issue very well.

I've always thought the flag that flies over the royal House of Saud should be replaced with the Big Red Texaco Star. Next time there's any act of terror traced back to them, retaliation should be swift and simple:

Kick their ass
Take the gas.

Miss Malkin is death on illegal immigration. Anyone who suggests that, perhaps, it would be awkward to deport several million people is, in her view, the worst kind of traitor.

I don't usually watch O'Reilly, but this thread has prompted me to do so. There was a black guy on just now saying that there was nothing racial about 90% of blacks voting for Obama because blacks always voted Democrat. O'Reilly politely pointed out that there were two (count 'em) Democrats running in the Democrat primaries.

Non sequitur.

Score one for O'Reilly. ;-)

Sellers don't set prices unless its a monopoly. Oil isn't. But I love reading posts from people who think the Saudis somehow set the price of oil. There might be reason to believe that if they were curtailing production to create a shortage but that isn't the case.

The dollar is falling in value and many investors are converting funds to commodities in an attempt to find something whose value will hold or provide some return. The same thing happened in the months leading up to the stock market crash in 1929 or for that matter the tulip bulb market in Holland centuries ago. As currency loses value (yes, tulip bulbs were once exchanged akin to currency) , people who are holding that currency tend to go on buying sprees for things they think will hold their value.

But the "thing" you buy is only worth what you can sell it for when you want to sell it. And eventually the high cost of gasoline will reduce the demand for it, and then there will be a glut, and the speculators who bought futures at one price will have to sell it months later for less.

These sort of things straighten themselves out, UNLESS, the government gets involved and tries to "fix" the problem which always leads to making the problem worse.

The best thing we can do is to both increase domestic supplies and reduce our consumption. But if it soothes your ego to blame the Saudis for this mess, feel free.

re: #236 Mich-again

Oil production is set by a cartel that, while it does not control all world oil production, controls enough of it so that swings they make in production do affect pricing.

In the past, they also used to directly set prices, IIRC.

Speculators also affect pricing.

But the real issue is supply being set sufficiently low. failing to adapt to increasing demand from China and India.

It is in OPEC's ability to increase supply by several million barrles per day, if they chose to. They choose not to, because to the extent they increase supply, they depress the price.

They are in the catbird's seat.

And Bush, and then Cheney, did go in and beg them to increase supply. Or so we are told.

Anyhow, I do not blame the Sauds for gouging us on oil. They hate us, and belive the oil is Allah-given to them to screw the infidel with as they enrich themselves.

I do blame them for using their wealth to export their intolerant, violent 'religion'.

Seizing their oil would have slowed or stopped the spread of salafism. It would certainly have shown Iran they have to watch their step.

re: #237 Maine's Michael

I agree with that part 100%. But they are probably smart enough to know that the high oil prices may just kill off the golden goose. At these prices all sorts of alternatives that were once cost prohibitive become very attractive and economically viable. And once the alternatives become viable, the value of oil will drop like a prom dress.

Even funnier are the ones who think that Bush is somehow profiting from it all. There's only so much a President can do unilaterally to lower the price of oil, but one of Bush's earliest directives (Executive Order 13212) was to increase drilling for oil and gas on federal lands. And the environmentalists are still giving him hell for it.

The same message was unpopular in Europe and America all through the late 1920s until 1939 and we paid a price for not hearing the message, and acting on it.

I believe we are doing better now, but only marginally.

It is hard to act in time, because there are many fools who do not see the necessity for difficult action, and these fools are gathered up by those who want their votes for their own purposes of arbitrary power. It is dismaying to watch. At least McCain sees the big picture enough to articulate our real and dismal choices.

McCain is better than Bush, who misdirected us with his "religion of peace" comment.

re: #239 David Simon

OTOH, the Government continues to buy oil on the open market so they can pump it into the strategic reserve which currently holds about 60 million barrels of oil more than we had at the beginning of the Iraq war. So we are printing more money to buy more oil to pump into the ground which is the classic double whammy.

IMO we already have a huge strategic reserve. Its called ANWR.

Yes, but ANWR is a pimple on an elphant's ass. As far as I'm concerned, let's tap it if/when the price of oil is a lot higher. In the meantime, it's a lot more economical now to explore alternative energy sources.

One other to thing to consider: As second- and third-world economies become first-world, the demand - and price - for oil is going to continue to rise. I don't think it's necessarily a good idea to exhaust our home-grown energy resources now when we can buy it (relatively cheap?) on the open market.

Seizing their [the Saudis] oil would have slowed or stopped the spread of salafism. It would certainly have shown Iran they have to watch their step.

As the self-appointed spokesperson for "neo-colonialism," I've never seen a good argument for not invading Saudi Arabia in 2002 and taking over their oilfields. Their nasty Wahabbist government was directly responsible for 9-11, and they clearly think that we're damnable kuffirs, so f**k them. The world depends on oil, and the flow of oil is safer in our hands than in the hands of the Islamic maniacs. We could offer to split the oil with China, France, and Germany.

All the fancy white-wine-slurping metrosexuals in the U.S. State Department never considered my plan, did they? Am I a chickenhawk? Yes I am. So what. My views make more sense than those of confused weaklings like Obama, so I need to hear why I'm wrong.

I hope this isn't a dead thread. Please, people. Tell me why we shouldn't invade Saudi Arabia and take over their oilfields.

We could offer to split the oil with China, France, and Germany.

It might come to that (but substitute Russia and the EU for France and Germany).

The first step is to try to transform the entire Middle East from a sewer of bigotry and corruption into something approaching civilization. (That's what our quixotic ventures in Afghanistan and Iraq are all about.) If that fails, drastic measures will be called for. And "neo-colonialism" is high up on the list of preferred drastic measures as far as I'm concerned.

David, check this out:

The Energy Challenge
Alan W. Dowd
FrontPageMagazine.com
27 June 2007

(snip) ...If you think the United States has exhausted its own reserves of fossil fuels, think again. The Energy Information Administration, a sub-agency of the Department of Energy, reports that, at this moment, the US has 29.9 billion barrels of oil. In other words, the US actually possesses more oil than oil-exporting countries such as Mexico, Norway and the UK.

Plus, there are vast, untapped oil fields and other energy sources inside the US:

%u2022 Just off the coast of Louisiana, Chevron has found an oil field—the “Jack 2” well—with 15 billion barrels of oil.
%u2022 The nonpartisan research firm RAND estimates that Colorado, Utah and Wyoming sit on a goldmine of oil-shale deposits, once thought to be too expensive to convert into petroleum. These states hold between 500 billion and 1.1 trillion recoverable barrels. As RAND’s James Bartis explained in 2005, “We’ve got more oil in this very compact area than the entire Middle East.”
%u2022 As The Economist has reported HERE, drillers have discovered a billion barrels of oil in Sevier County, Utah, alone.
%u2022 Plus, the so-called Greater Rocky Mountain Region holds between 165 trillion and 260 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, which explains why geologists are calling this swath of the US, “the Persian Gulf of natural gas.” (Iran, by way of comparison, sits atop 26.7 trillion cubic meters of natural gas.)
In fact, when we add America’s existing proven reserves to the new finds along the Gulf and in the Big Sky states, the US possesses more oil than all the smug, petroleum-producing headaches of the world—combined. More than Saudi Arabia, more than Iran, more than the UAE, more than Venezuela, more than Russia.

In short, contrary to the mantras of forlorn politicians and newsmen, the “energy crisis” is more a crisis of will than of availability/quantity: The future-fuel alternatives are there—in nuclear power and hybrids and, further down the road, hydrogen. Do we have the will to exploit them? And the fossil fuels are there today—in the Big Sky states and the Gulf and Alaska. Do we have the will to extract them?

The National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA) shows HERE that “There is no evidence that the world, in general, or the United States, in particular, is running out of fossil fuels.” The very opposite may be more accurate:

%u2022 In 1874, geologists in Pennsylvania (then the major oil-producing state) predicted there was only four year’s worth of oil remaining in the US. Yet by 1945, proven reserves of oil in the US amounted to 20 billion barrels.
%u2022 Between 1945 and 1994, the US produced 135 billion barrels of oil domestically—“more than six times the entire amount known to exist in 1945.” Today, US reserves alone could sustain domestic oil needs for 38 to 75 years.
%u2022 In 1920, the US Geological Survey estimated total world oil supplies at 60 billion barrels. In 1950, the experts pushed that number to 600 billion. By 1990, world oil supplies were estimated at 2 trillion barrels. By the mid-1990s, the estimate was higher yet—2.4 trillion. And by 2000, it was even higher—3 trillion barrels of oil supply.
The reason for this constant upward readjustment is technology. ...(snip)

Dang - never saw numbers this big. I knew our reserves were huge but this is absolutely amazing. Normally I don't pay any attention to lib tv but Penn & Tellers Bullshit was on the other night and they did a feature (among others) on Nuclear Power - bad or good. The wimp they had against got his stones handed to him - Penn said "grow a diC%" and proceed to go on a rant that we need to build 400 nuclear power plants to get us off the oil ticks teat. This is one time I have to completely agree with him.

OTOH last night I turned it on and he was telling us the Boy Scouts were the worst thing on earth cuz they didn't allow homosexuals as leaders or scouts. Oh well you cannot always win now can you?

253 quickjustice  Sat, May 10, 2008 6:42:11am

I find some of McCain's policies, on immigration and McCain-Feingold, for example, heinous. On the other hand, McCain does have a fetching political persona.

A kid asked McCain yesterday if McCain was too old to be president. "Aren't you afraid you'll die or develop Alzheimer's or something?" After noting his high energy level on the campaign trail, and his 94 year old mother, McCain ended with, "Thanks for asking, you little jerk!"

This campaign could actually be fun.

A PRESIDENT OBAMA WOULD LET IRAN NUKE ISRAEL. SOD OFF

re: #254 yochanan

Wouldn't worry about them when the shite hits the fan on Barry the Messiah. Maybe some more videotapes from Obama supporters? Conservatives will forget about McVain's act and prioritize wanting to deny Obama the Presidency as much as possible.

First maybe Hillary is staying around to watch what happens in the Rezko trial? Let's see, Barry the Pure amd Michelle The Flag Waver were able to get their house for 15% less than its asking price, while Rezko, suprise, suprise, bought the homeowner's adjacent lot at full price. And on the same day ! Things that make you go hmmmmm....

Plus Israel will not let Israel get nuked by Iran. If Obama is the President-elect expect a bombing mission.
