Andy McKee is amazing. I have always admired guitarists who can accompany themselves, finger pick and.never.miss.a.note. I saw Joe Bonamassa last week and he was amazing also. Izzy, I'm with you...not fair.

Perfect analogy. While I would love to able to play like Andy, if that kind of ability was just handed to me, I would not appreciate it. Half the fun of playing guitar is progressing from stage to stage.
Kind of a metaphor for life eh?

I think equality of opportunity is all that is required. That's why politicians are so corrosive. This country has equality of opportunity. Success at something is just a function of how hard you are willing to work. Alas, like playing the guitar.

Yes, she's a blue merle Austrailian shepherd. ( so called because they are really from the US Southwest, but were originally used to herd Australian sheep) It's in the blood, she tries to herd us going up and downstairs and will run circles around the other dogs until they are backed into a corner of the yard. Zero training in herding.

LOL When we were young and really poor we bought a used car that already had the driver's seat all chewed up. Thank God I was married and not dating. The funny story about that car was that my sister in law borrowed it for a couple of days and as a thank you she restuffed the seat with something she found in our garage and kind of fixed it up for me. After getting the itchies for a week I finally found out she had used fiberglass insulation.

it is in the blood w/ the herders. it's incredible. my friend was visiting w/ his 4mo. old border collie ( the kind in the movie 'babe') and that little pup was running us all. his 4 daughters were getting nipped and pushed along. we were a bunch of sheep. it was fun.

And the hits just keep on comin'!
New at zomblog:
Another ridiculous day with the Code Pink witches in Berkeley
Please, God, make it stop!
Or should that be “Goddess” instead?
On Friday, May 9, Code Pink dressed up as “witches and crones” in front of the Marine Recruiting Office in Berkeley — though how this differed from their normal appearance was not explained. Seeking to “invoke the Foremothers” in their ongoing attempt to use any means — physical, magical, self-defeating — to win their metaphorical war against the United States Marine Corps, Code Pink posed for the cameras as they always do, and (as they also always do) achieved absolutely nothing other than to discredit themselves.
Fortunately, I missed most of the action, swinging by later in the day to find this incomprehensible scene of a virgin bride holding a bloody baby. Tell me again what this has to do with witchcraft and cronery?Note, also, the sign on the right: after four years of dedicating themselves to the “peace movement,” Code Pink has still yet to master the impossibly convoluted intricacies of the peace sign, and often as not will produce a Mercedes Benz logo instead.

Note, also, the sign on the right: after four years of dedicating themselves to the “peace movement,” Code Pink has still yet to master the impossibly convoluted intricacies of the peace sign, and often as not will produce a Mercedes Benz logo instead.

you take the fishing pole and poke it up in their web/cocoon in the trees and twirl it around and pull down what you can of a awful glob of bag worms. and then stomp them. yes, gardening can make a person mean. but they are horrible pests and quite destructive.

Dog instincts are amazing. I had a sheltie years ago that I thought was just an apartment sized collie and just a generally agreeable pooch which she was.
One Sunday morning I looked out in my small back yard to see her zigging and zagging around a group of 5 or 6 young kids who had come into my yard. Before I could run out to intervene the kids all huddled up in a corner of the yard, and the sheltie simply sat down and watched them.

The shrine is...um...in magical terms? A mess. If one is trying to evoke - never mind invoke - a Power, the symbols need to harmonize, and be centered. If one is going to use a rectangle...criminy. Rectangles do not work - they set the elements at angles, and therefore at conflict. The lines don't match, so the power's out of balance.
Magic doesn't work, period. But if you're going to try to use it, it depends on harmony and tension within a rather hard framework. That ... mess ... doesn't work.
In normal aesthetic terms, a freakin' disaster.

I don't get it. Technically, it's impeccable. But, shorn of the video, it's nothing more than background music for the waiting room in a doctor's office. How about some footage of Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery, or Django Reinhardt? You could FEEL that stuff. (Actually, Wes veered into the elevator realm toward the end of his brief career, but that stuff he played on "Live at Tsubo" with the Miles Davis Quintet is the real jihad, as in "armed conquest," and not some watered-down jihad, as in "internal struggle.")

I have access to channels, but as you can read, they're for believers... and it MUST be hand-carried, due to Junta-socialist restrictions... and the damage to infrastructure, which was in shabby shape BEFORE the tidal surge...

PepsiCo, for several years, gave Sharpton a compensated position on one of its advisory boards. The group also enjoys financial support from the state's top politicians.
New York Gov. David Paterson has transferred at least $28,000 from his own re-election committee to the National Action Network since 2001. Rep.

The M14 is a magazine-fed, gas-operated semi-automatic 7.62mm (.30-caliber) rifle still used by the Navy SEALs. It deploys a 20-round magazine, and has an effective range well beyond 500 meters at a rate of 750 rounds per minute. Operated from the shoulder, it is designed primarily for semi-automatic fire. It was developed from a long line of experimental weapons based on the M1 Garand of the 1940’s. It was planned to replace four weapons: the M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, M3 “Grease Gun,” and M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR). However, it only excelled at replacing the M1 Garand, and the BAR was more effectively replaced by the M60 machine gun.

Some people generals the world could do without:
BURMA'S junta has impounded two UN food aid shipments at Rangoon airport, triggering more outrage at the military government's refusal to accept a major international relief operation."We're going to have to shut down our very small airlift operation until we get guarantees from the authorities," a furious World Food Programme regional director Tony Banbury told CNN.
The two shipments, 38 tonnes of high-energy biscuits, were enough to feed 95,000 people - a tiny fraction of the estimated 1.5 million destitute survivors of Cyclone Nargis, which ripped into the southeast Asian nation six days ago.
"It should be on trucks headed to the victims. You've seen the conditions they are in. That food is now sitting on a tarmac doing no good," Mr Banbury said.
Despite the desperate needs of the survivors, the generals are adamant that only they will distribute the emergency aid that is going in after the worst cyclone to hit Asia since 1991, when 143,000 people were killed in Bangladesh.
Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej had to cancel a planned trip to Burma this weekend to ask the junta to open their doors just hours after he said he would go.

Even the UN suspended aid to Burma when they found out the junta confiscated their initial aid shipments for their own use. Its close to self-inflicted genocide. At what point do we just say kill off the junta to save millions of its prisoners? That point is real close IMO.
Heres the deal I'd cut. We'll destroy the junta to enable our otherwise too squeamish "allies" to bring in the aid.

zombie--my favorite pic (FWIW) is the one of the shrine, with the Marine Corps poster in the background that says, "Superior Thinking has Always Overwhelmed Superior Force."
Classic!
Yeah! The subtleties of every zombie photo. I put a lot of consideration into the little details like that.
For example, this picture from yesterday's "Palestinian checkpoint" report. Every aspect, all the unconscious background (and foreground) components -- all there on purpose. I selected it over 15 similar photos that just didn't have "it." This one inspires about five different conflicting but strong emotions. That's what makes a zombie photo.

Yes, but if the aid doesn't get to the people, it's a waste of time, money and effort - no matter how well-intentioned we are. (See North Korea where are aid was used to feed L'il Kim's soldiers.)
I agree.
Personally, I think we should imprison the junta, feed their people, and then, when they're fed and housed again, let them pick new leaders.
But then I don't get these nuances of cultural relativism

I don't get it. Technically, it's impeccable. But, shorn of the video, it's nothing more than background music for the waiting room in a doctor's office. How about some footage of Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery, or Django Reinhardt? You could FEEL that stuff. (Actually, Wes veered into the elevator realm toward the end of his brief career, but that stuff he played on "Live at Tsubo" with the Miles Davis Quintet is the real jihad, as in "armed conquest," and not some watered-down jihad, as in "internal struggle.")
Now we're talkin'!
Too bad there are very vey few Charlie Christian videos in existence.
As for LGF guitar videos, I want to see more Slim Gaillard, more Speedy West, more Jimmy Bryant, more Joseph Spence, more Charlie Christian, more Django.

That's basically, I think, what I'm aiming at. At what point do we decide to bypass a sovereign nation's government to provide aid, and what right do we have to do it?
That's where I'm really torn. Do we really have the right in this instance to bypass a sovereign government to provide aid? And, if so, why haven't we done the same thing in other countries--matter of fact, why have we not done it in other countries?
Damn!
I just haven't thought it through enough yet to give a good argument pro or con. It just doesn't seem right to me that we force another country to accept aid, but at the same time, it doesn't seem right to me that we let the country's people die while we sit by and don't do something to help them because their dictatorship refuses to allow us to provide aid.

Its all how you sight it. I would off set aim so when I placed the front site tip just on the bottom of the target, it would hit center mass. I would start the shot low and then creep the front post up till I had no white showing. I'd just wait till I had a solid black line and Bam, bullseye.

Imagine: we forcibly go in to Myanmar to provide humanitarian aid to the victims of the cyclone...aid the government has declined very clearly. We have to fight our way through the country to get the basics to the people...and having to fight their government forces every step of the way, and put up with the international political pressure of us fighting our way through a third-world country just to provide aid and comfort to the people that their government could/would not provide for....

It's damn hard to live with the knowledge that you and your friends or your government could have saved hundreds of thousands of lives and didn't do it.

The truth is, most of the rest of the world doesn't give a shit. A decade ago, a famous director named John Boorman made a movie called Beyond Rangoon, and Burma was on everyone's mind for a couple of weeks. Since then, it's been forgotten.

Evening Sarge,
I feel much the same way. Carry your thought through to the innocent people we try to help who end up as casualties in a struggle between a government which could potentially demand that they refuse any such aid and those tasked with "forcing" aid. At what point would it stop being aid?
I suppose finding back channels to funnel aid through that the government would accept would be the simplistic solution but that just opens up another can of worms.

Numbers dont matter. The basic question is this: Is it moral to take a life to save a life? Some moonbats will answer no, its never OK. I would say yes if the situation warrants it. The same thing applies to most situations. The idea you have to wait for something to occur in massive numbers or repeatedly to retaliate is ludicrous. Whether you save one man or a hundred, if a cause is worth fighting for, its worth fighting for.

You are trapped in a space station. A rescue Shuttle mission can't reach you for seven days. You are there with three other crew members. You do the calculations and realize that, even with the minimum oxygen breathing intake, the four of you will use up the last bit of oxygen on the sixth day. In which case you ALL will die before getting rescued.
However, it dawns on everyone, if you kill one of the crew members on the first day, you will have enough oxygen for the remaining three crew members to last the full week and be rescued.
Questions:
a. Do you kill one of the crew members in order to save the other three?
b. If so: how do you decide who dies?
c. If the chosen person does not accede or volunteer, do you just murder him?

But, where I'm torn is just that: is it really right for us to provide aid by force? Is that really aid? Or is it starting another war, another front?
Imagine: we forcibly go in to Myanmar to provide humanitarian aid to the victims of the cyclone...aid the government has declined very clearly. We have to fight our way through the country to get the basics to the people...and having to fight their government forces every step of the way, and put up with the international political pressure of us fighting our way through a third-world country just to provide aid and comfort to the people that their government could/would not provide for....
But also, who in the political world is going to condemn our action if we were to do it? Our allies? Nope. Our enemies? Maybe. But in so doing they'd also have to consent that the militant government was letting thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands of people die, and I think that's where the conversation would end. We wouldn't need to be there forever as long as we stuck to a short term goal.

As one who sought a job in LE and frequently carries a concealed pistol. I had to answer that question on a person individual level.
Am I willing to kill another human being.
Damn well answer that before you pick up a gun. When it comes time to act and you have to think about it... it's too damn late.
My reasoning is pretty simple and rooted in the basics. Life, Liberty, Property when someone is violating the basic principles and causing great harm to another human being, I have no problem using lethal force. Simply put I have zero problem shooting someone to stop them from harming or killing another.
1:1 in that case.
I would have even less problem in a VT situation drop the SOB without thinking about it.

Why doesn't the UN do something about it?

There is a moral difference between taking the life of someone who is violating civilized code, and killing an innocent so others can live.
Shooting the VT killer (may his name be blotted out forever) between the eyes as he begins his shooting spree is a GOOD THING.
As too the space station scenario. I fall back to my FD days. I go in with a partner. We both come back, period, end of discussion, I DO NOT LEAVE HIM THERE TO DIE TO SAVE MYSELF! Same with the space station, we all come back, and work like hell to make it happen.
Remember Apollo 13, the LEM had supplies for 2 people for 2 days (IIRC) but it had to get 3 people back in 4 days. Everyone worked like hell, they all were coming back.

re: #463 Sarge1984 Sarge it is NOT a question of "force feeding" a population; it's a question of enabling the population to feed itself when it is provided the food aid to do so.
And frankly, I don't think we should stop as long as we have three things: A government that would rather see it's people starve than accept aid from other nations, other nations that have the aid to provide to those starving people and at least one nation which has the military capability of doing so.
That we stand by and allow Darfur to happen, and all the others going back at least to Pol Pot in Cambodia to me means only that we've got ourselves so tied up in intellectual knots that we allow governments to allow their people to die unnecessarily and that, to me, is unacceptable.
And, as I said before, that probably means I'm not very bright or am unwilling to resolve philosphical problems before stopping people from dying unnecessarily, but so be it.

Sorry for the delay...had to walk the pooch.
That's what's got me all-fired-up, though. At what point do we decide that we're going to force-feed the people of that country aid that their government has strenuously declined? Who are we to bypass the government? Are we really ready to get into another conflict over providing aid? And, if so, are we ready to do it for every country that really needs it? Will we do it for Darfur? North Korea? Iran? Cuba? Where do we draw the line?
Hobson's choice for sure.
We can't do it all. That for sure.
In a larger picture the mere fact thugocracies have legitimacy means we've lost the first battle. We act as if it's acceptable for Chaves, Mugabe to do what they do.
I think my point is I believe it's moral to help those people and to remove the oppressive yoke from their necks.
BUT it's not practical.
Then if we don't do what is right because it's not practical...
What are we?

It's been done, actually. (Don't recall the title... based on a sci fi story by either Clarke or Asimov)
The Cruel Equations, by Robert Sheckley. No movie that I know of.

thanks! I need to upload more shots from last week
I also feel bad - since there was a exact opposite of a moonbat happening in one of our city parks today, a celebration to honor the local troops, but I couldn't find a place to park... & was late to do what I'd promised for my client....

The story in the links above about the Mahdi army surrendering in Baghdad should make everyone take heart about the events of the last few days.
The fact of the matter is, Hiz'b'allah isn't winning its victories in Beirut through hard fighting. It's not being battle-tested. People just aren't really fighting back that hard.
The fact of the matter is, Iran, Syria, Hiz'b'allah, the Taliban, Hamas, whoever...Israel and America have the capability to take them all out, crush them utterly. We are not lacking in the weapons, the technology, the tactics, the brave and intelligent troops. ALL that we are currently lacking in is the WILL. When that comes, what follows will be hard, but not nearly as hard as we imagine it will be.
